Edge Federated Learning Via Unit-Modulus Over-The-Air Computation

Edge federated learning (FL) is an emerging paradigm that trains a global parametric model from distributed datasets based on wireless communications. This paper proposes a unit-modulus over-the-air computation (UMAirComp) framework to facilitate efficient edge federated learning, which simultaneously uploads local model parameters and updates global model parameters via analog beamforming. The proposed framework avoids sophisticated baseband signal processing, leading to low communication delays and implementation costs. Training loss bounds of UMAirComp FL systems are derived and two low-complexity large-scale optimization algorithms, termed penalty alternating minimization (PAM) and accelerated gradient projection (AGP), are proposed to minimize the nonconvex nonsmooth loss bound. Simulation results show that the proposed UMAirComp framework with PAM algorithm achieves a smaller mean square error of model parameters' estimation, training loss, and test error compared with other benchmark schemes. Moreover, the proposed UMAirComp framework with AGP algorithm achieves satisfactory performance while reduces the computational complexity by orders of magnitude compared with existing optimization algorithms. Finally, we demonstrate the implementation of UMAirComp in a vehicle-to-everything autonomous driving simulation platform. It is found that autonomous driving tasks are more sensitive to model parameter errors than other tasks since the neural networks for autonomous driving contain sparser model parameters.

Accelerating Federated Edge Learning via Topology Optimization

Federated edge learning (FEEL) is envisioned as a promising paradigm to achieve privacy-preserving distributed learning. However, it consumes excessive learning time due to the existence of straggler devices. In this paper, a novel topology-optimized federated edge learning (TOFEL) scheme is proposed to tackle the heterogeneity issue in federated learning and to improve the communication-and-computation efficiency. Specifically, a problem of jointly optimizing the aggregation topology and computing speed is formulated to minimize the weighted summation of energy consumption and latency. To solve the mixed-integer nonlinear problem, we propose a novel solution method of penalty-based successive convex approximation, which converges to a stationary point of the primal problem under mild conditions. To facilitate real-time decision making, an imitation-learning based method is developed, where deep neural networks (DNNs) are trained offline to mimic the penalty-based method, and the trained imitation DNNs are deployed at the edge devices for online inference. Thereby, an efficient imitate-learning based approach is seamlessly integrated into the TOFEL framework. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed TOFEL scheme accelerates the federated learning process, and achieves a higher energy efficiency. Moreover, we apply the scheme to 3D object detection with multi-vehicle point cloud datasets in the CARLA simulator. The results confirm the superior learning performance of the TOFEL scheme over conventional designs with the same resource and deadline constraints.

Near-field radiative heat transfer between hybrid polaritonic structures

Near-field radiative heat transfer between close objects may exceed the far-field blackbody radiation in orders of magnitude when exploiting polaritonic materials. Great efforts have been made to experimentally measure this fundamental stochastic effect but mostly based on simple materials. In this work, we foster an all-optical method to characterize the heat transfer between less explored plasmon-phonon hybrid polaritonic systems made of graphene-SiC heterostructures. A large heat flux about 26 times of the blackbody radiation limit is obtained over a 150-nm vacuum gap, attributed to the couplings of three different surface modes (plasmon, phonon polaritons and frustrated mode). The interaction of polaritonic modes in the hybrid system is also explored to build a switchable thermophotonic device with nearly unity heat flux tunability. This work paves the way for understanding mode-mediated near-field heat transfer and provides a platform for building thermophotonic or thermo-optoelectronic blocks for various applications.

Integrated Sensing, Communication, and Computation Over-the-Air: MIMO Beamforming Design

To support the unprecedented growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) applications, tremendous data need to be collected by the IoT devices and delivered to the server for further computation. By utilizing the same signals for both radar sensing and data communication, the integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) technique has broken the barriers between data collection and delivery in the physical layer. By exploiting the analog-wave addition in a multi-access channel, over-the-air computation (AirComp) enables function computation via transmissions in the physical layer. The promising performance of ISAC and AirComp motivates the current work on developing a framework called integrated sensing, communication, and computation over-the-air (ISCCO). The performance metrics of radar sensing and AirComp are evaluated by the mean squared errors of the estimated target response matrix and the received computation results, respectively. The design challenge of MIMO ISCCO lies in the joint optimization of beamformers for sensing, communication, and computation at both the IoT devices and the server, which results in a non-convex problem. To solve this problem, an algorithmic solution based on the technique of semidefinite relaxation is proposed. The use case of target location estimation based on ISCCO is demonstrated in simulation to show the performance superiority.

Robotic Wireless Energy Transfer in Dynamic Environments: System Design and Experimental Validation

Wireless energy transfer (WET) is a ground-breaking technology for cutting the last wire between mobile sensors and power grids in smart cities. Yet, WET only offers effective transmission of energy over a short distance. Robotic WET is an emerging paradigm that mounts the energy transmitter on a mobile robot and navigates the robot through different regions in a large area to charge remote energy harvesters. However, it is challenging to determine the robotic charging strategy in an unknown and dynamic environment due to the uncertainty of obstacles. This paper proposes a hardware-in-the-loop joint optimization framework that offers three distinctive features: 1) efficient model updates and re-optimization based on the last-round experimental data; 2) iterative refinement of the anchor list for adaptation to different environments; 3) verification of algorithms in a high-fidelity Gazebo simulator and a multi-robot testbed. Experimental results show that the proposed framework significantly saves the WET mission completion time while satisfying collision avoidance and energy harvesting constraints.

Accelerating Edge Intelligence via Integrated Sensing and Communication

Realizing edge intelligence consists of sensing, communication, training, and inference stages. Conventionally, the sensing and communication stages are executed sequentially, which results in excessive amount of dataset generation and uploading time. This paper proposes to accelerate edge intelligence via integrated sensing and communication (ISAC). As such, the sensing and communication stages are merged so as to make the best use of the wireless signals for the dual purpose of dataset generation and uploading. However, ISAC also introduces additional interference between sensing and communication functionalities. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a classification error minimization formulation to design the ISAC beamforming and time allocation. The globally optimal solution is derived via the rank-1 guaranteed semidefinite relaxation, and performance analysis is performed to quantify the ISAC gain over that of conventional edge intelligence. Simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed ISAC-assisted edge intelligence system. Interestingly, we find that ISAC is always beneficial, when the duration of generating a sample is more than the duration of uploading a sample. Otherwise, the ISAC gain can vanish or even be negative. Nevertheless, we still derive a sufficient condition, under which a positive ISAC gain is feasible.

Automated Side Channel Analysis of Media Software with Manifold Learning

The prosperous development of cloud computing and machine learning as a service has led to the widespread use of media software to process confidential media data. This paper explores an adversary's ability to launch side channel analyses (SCA) against media software to reconstruct confidential media inputs. Recent advances in representation learning and perceptual learning inspired us to consider the reconstruction of media inputs from side channel traces as a cross-modality manifold learning task that can be addressed in a unified manner with an autoencoder framework trained to learn the mapping between media inputs and side channel observations. We further enhance the autoencoder with attention to localize the program points that make the primary contribution to SCA, thus automatically pinpointing information-leakage points in media software. We also propose a novel and highly effective defensive technique called perception blinding that can perturb media inputs with perception masks and mitigate manifold learning-based SCA. Our evaluation exploits three popular media software to reconstruct inputs in image, audio, and text formats. We analyze three common side channels - cache bank, cache line, and page tables - and userspace-only cache set accesses logged by standard Prime+Probe. Our framework successfully reconstructs high-quality confidential inputs from the assessed media software and automatically pinpoint their vulnerable program points, many of which are unknown to the public. We further show that perception blinding can mitigate manifold learning-based SCA with negligible extra cost.

Seed-driven Document Ranking for Systematic Reviews: A Reproducibility Study

Screening or assessing studies is critical to the quality and outcomes of a systematic review. Typically, a Boolean query retrieves the set of studies to screen. As the set of studies retrieved is unordered, screening all retrieved studies is usually required for high-quality systematic reviews. Screening prioritisation, or in other words, ranking the set of studies, enables downstream activities of a systematic review to begin in parallel. We investigate a method that exploits seed studies -- potentially relevant studies used to seed the query formulation process -- for screening prioritisation. Our investigation aims to reproduce this method to determine if it is generalisable on recently published datasets and determine the impact of using multiple seed studies on effectiveness. We show that while we could reproduce the original methods, we could not replicate their results exactly. However, we believe this is due to minor differences in document pre-processing, not deficiencies with the original methodology. Our results also indicate that our reproduced screening prioritisation method, (1) is generalisable across datasets of similar and different topicality compared to the original implementation, (2) that when using multiple seed studies, the effectiveness of the method increases using our techniques to enable this, (3) and that the use of multiple seed studies produces more stable rankings compared to single seed studies. Finally, we make our implementation and results publicly available at the following URL: https://github.com/ielab/sdr

MeSH Term Suggestion for Systematic Review Literature Search

High-quality medical systematic reviews require comprehensive literature searches to ensure the recommendations and outcomes are sufficiently reliable. Indeed, searching for relevant medical literature is a key phase in constructing systematic reviews and often involves domain (medical researchers) and search (information specialists) experts in developing the search queries. Queries in this context are highly complex, based on Boolean logic, include free-text terms and index terms from standardised terminologies (e.g., MeSH), and are difficult and time-consuming to build. The use of MeSH terms, in particular, has been shown to improve the quality of the search results. However, identifying the correct MeSH terms to include in a query is difficult: information experts are often unfamiliar with the MeSH database and unsure about the appropriateness of MeSH terms for a query. Naturally, the full value of the MeSH terminology is often not fully exploited. This paper investigates methods to suggest MeSH terms based on an initial Boolean query that includes only free-text terms. These methods promise to automatically identify highly effective MeSH terms for inclusion in a systematic review query. Our study contributes an empirical evaluation of several MeSH term suggestion methods. We perform an extensive analysis of the retrieval, ranking, and refinement of MeSH term suggestions for each method and how these suggestions impact the effectiveness of Boolean queries.

Building an Application Independent Natural Language Interface

Traditional approaches to building natural language (NL) interfaces typically use a semantic parser to parse the user command and convert it to a logical form, which is then translated to an executable action in an application. However, it is still challenging for a semantic parser to correctly parse natural language. For a different domain, the parser may need to be retrained or tuned, and a new translator also needs to be written to convert the logical forms to executable actions. In this work, we propose a novel and application independent approach to building NL interfaces that does not need a semantic parser or a translator. It is based on natural language to natural language matching and learning, where the representation of each action and each user command are both in natural language. To perform a user intended action, the system only needs to match the user command with the correct action representation, and then execute the corresponding action. The system also interactively learns new (paraphrased) commands for actions to expand the action representations over time. Our experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Observation of many-body quantum phase transitions beyond the Kibble-Zurek mechanism

Quantum critical behavior of many-body phase transitions is one of the most fascinating yet challenging questions in quantum physics. Here, we improved the band-mapping method to investigate the quantum phase transition from superfluid to Mott insulators, and we observed the critical behaviors of quantum phase transitions in both dynamical steady-state-relaxation region and phase-oscillation region. Based on various observables, two different values for the same quantum critical parameter are observed. This result is beyond a universal-scaling-law description of quantum phase transitions known as the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, and suggests that multiple quantum critical mechanisms are competing in many-body quantum phase transition experiments in inhomogeneous systems.

AGMB-Transformer: Anatomy-Guided Multi-Branch Transformer Network for Automated Evaluation of Root Canal Therapy

Accurate evaluation of the treatment result on X-ray images is a significant and challenging step in root canal therapy since the incorrect interpretation of the therapy results will hamper timely follow-up which is crucial to the patients' treatment outcome. Nowadays, the evaluation is performed in a manual manner, which is time-consuming, subjective, and error-prone. In this paper, we aim to automate this process by leveraging the advances in computer vision and artificial intelligence, to provide an objective and accurate method for root canal therapy result assessment. A novel anatomy-guided multi-branch Transformer (AGMB-Transformer) network is proposed, which first extracts a set of anatomy features and then uses them to guide a multi-branch Transformer network for evaluation. Specifically, we design a polynomial curve fitting segmentation strategy with the help of landmark detection to extract the anatomy features. Moreover, a branch fusion module and a multi-branch structure including our progressive Transformer and Group Multi-Head Self-Attention (GMHSA) are designed to focus on both global and local features for an accurate diagnosis. To facilitate the research, we have collected a large-scale root canal therapy evaluation dataset with 245 root canal therapy X-ray images, and the experiment results show that our AGMB-Transformer can improve the diagnosis accuracy from 57.96% to 90.20% compared with the baseline network. The proposed AGMB-Transformer can achieve a highly accurate evaluation of root canal therapy. To our best knowledge, our work is the first to perform automatic root canal therapy evaluation and has important clinical value to reduce the workload of endodontists.

Dispensed Transformer Network for Unsupervised Domain Adaptation

Accurate segmentation is a crucial step in medical image analysis and applying supervised machine learning to segment the organs or lesions has been substantiated effective. However, it is costly to perform data annotation that provides ground truth labels for training the supervised algorithms, and the high variance of data that comes from different domains tends to severely degrade system performance over cross-site or cross-modality datasets. To mitigate this problem, a novel unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) method named dispensed Transformer network (DTNet) is introduced in this paper. Our novel DTNet contains three modules. First, a dispensed residual transformer block is designed, which realizes global attention by dispensed interleaving operation and deals with the excessive computational cost and GPU memory usage of the Transformer. Second, a multi-scale consistency regularization is proposed to alleviate the loss of details in the low-resolution output for better feature alignment. Finally, a feature ranking discriminator is introduced to automatically assign different weights to domain-gap features to lessen the feature distribution distance, reducing the performance shift of two domains. The proposed method is evaluated on large fluorescein angiography (FA) retinal nonperfusion (RNP) cross-site dataset with 676 images and a wide used cross-modality dataset from the MM-WHS challenge. Extensive results demonstrate that our proposed network achieves the best performance in comparison with several state-of-the-art techniques.

Dual Shape Guided Segmentation Network for Organs-at-Risk in Head and Neck CT Images

The accurate segmentation of organs-at-risk (OARs) in head and neck CT images is a critical step for radiation therapy of head and neck cancer patients. However, manual delineation for numerous OARs is time-consuming and laborious, even for expert oncologists. Moreover, manual delineation results are susceptible to high intra- and inter-variability. To this end, we propose a novel dual shape guided network (DSGnet) to automatically delineate nine important OARs in head and neck CT images. To deal with the large shape variation and unclear boundary of OARs in CT images, we represent the organ shape using an organ-specific unilateral inverse-distance map (UIDM) and guide the segmentation task from two different perspectives: direct shape guidance by following the segmentation prediction and across shape guidance by sharing the segmentation feature. In the direct shape guidance, the segmentation prediction is not only supervised by the true label mask, but also by the true UIDM, which is implemented through a simple yet effective encoder-decoder mapping from the label space to the distance space. In the across shape guidance, UIDM is used to facilitate the segmentation by optimizing the shared feature maps. For the experiments, we build a large head and neck CT dataset with a total of 699 images from different volunteers, and conduct comprehensive experiments and comparisons with other state-of-the-art methods to justify the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed method. The overall Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) value of 0.842 across the nine important OARs demonstrates great potential applications in improving the delineation quality and reducing the time cost.

GT U-Net: A U-Net Like Group Transformer Network for Tooth Root Segmentation

To achieve an accurate assessment of root canal therapy, a fundamental step is to perform tooth root segmentation on oral X-ray images, in that the position of tooth root boundary is significant anatomy information in root canal therapy evaluation. However, the fuzzy boundary makes the tooth root segmentation very challenging. In this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end U-Net like Group Transformer Network (GT U-Net) for the tooth root segmentation. The proposed network retains the essential structure of U-Net but each of the encoders and decoders is replaced by a group Transformer, which significantly reduces the computational cost of traditional Transformer architectures by using the grouping structure and the bottleneck structure. In addition, the proposed GT U-Net is composed of a hybrid structure of convolution and Transformer, which makes it independent of pre-training weights. For optimization, we also propose a shape-sensitive Fourier Descriptor (FD) loss function to make use of shape prior knowledge. Experimental results show that our proposed network achieves the state-of-the-art performance on our collected tooth root segmentation dataset and the public retina dataset DRIVE. Code has been released at https://github.com/Kent0n-Li/GT-U-Net.

Paint4Poem: A Dataset for Artistic Visualization of Classical Chinese Poems

In this work we propose a new task: artistic visualization of classical Chinese poems, where the goal is to generatepaintings of a certain artistic style for classical Chinese poems. For this purpose, we construct a new dataset called Paint4Poem. Thefirst part of Paint4Poem consists of 301 high-quality poem-painting pairs collected manually from an influential modern Chinese artistFeng Zikai. As its small scale poses challenges for effectively training poem-to-painting generation models, we introduce the secondpart of Paint4Poem, which consists of 3,648 caption-painting pairs collected manually from Feng Zikai's paintings and 89,204 poem-painting pairs collected automatically from the web. We expect the former to help learning the artist painting style as it containshis most paintings, and the latter to help learning the semantic relevance between poems and paintings. Further, we analyze Paint4Poem regarding poem diversity, painting style, and the semantic relevance between poems and paintings. We create abenchmark for Paint4Poem: we train two representative text-to-image generation models: AttnGAN and MirrorGAN, and evaluate theirperformance regarding painting pictorial quality, painting stylistic relevance, and semantic relevance between poems and paintings. The results indicate that the models are able to generate paintings that have good pictorial quality and mimic Feng Zikai's style, but thereflection of poem semantics is limited. The dataset also poses many interesting research directions on this task, including transferlearning, few-shot learning, text-to-image generation for low-resource data etc. The dataset is publicly available.(https://github.com/paint4poem/paint4poem)

ECCR: Edge-Cloud Collaborative Recovery for Low-Power Wide-Area Networks interference mitigation

Recent advances in Low-Power Wide-Area Networks have mitigated interference by using cloud assistance. Those methods transmit the RSSI samples and corrupted packets to the cloud to restore the correct message. However, the effectiveness of those methods is challenged by the high transmission data amount. This paper presents a novel method for interference mitigation in a Edge-Cloud collaborative manner, namely ECCR. It does not require transmitting RSSI sample any more, whose length is eight times of the packet's. We demonstrate the disjointness of the bit errors of packets at the base stations via real-word experiments. ECCR leverages this to collaborate with multiple base stations for error recovery. Each base station detects and reports bit error locations to the cloud, then both error checking code and interfered packets from other receivers are utilized to restore correct packets. ECCR takes the advantages of both the global management ability of the cloud and the signal to perceive the benefit of each base station, and it is applicable to deployed LP-WAN systems (e.g. sx1280) without any extra hardware requirement. Experimental results show that ECCR is able to accurately decode packets when packets have nearly 51.76% corruption.

Partial Symbol Recovery for Interference Resilience in Low-Power Wide Area Networks

Recent years have witnessed the proliferation of Low-power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) in the unlicensed band for various Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. Due to the ultra-low transmission power and long transmission duration, LPWAN devices inevitably suffer from high power Cross Technology Interference (CTI), such as interference from Wi-Fi, coexisting in the same spectrum. To alleviate this issue, this paper introduces the Partial Symbol Recovery (PSR) scheme for improving the CTI resilience of LPWAN. We verify our idea on LoRa, a widely adopted LPWAN technique, as a proof of concept. At the PHY layer, although CTI has much higher power, its duration is relatively shorter compared with LoRa symbols, leaving part of a LoRa symbol uncorrupted. Moreover, due to its high redundancy, LoRa chips within a symbol are highly correlated. This opens the possibility of detecting a LoRa symbol with only part of the chips. By examining the unique frequency patterns in LoRa symbols with time-frequency analysis, our design effectively detects the clean LoRa chips that are free of CTI. This enables PSR to only rely on clean LoRa chips for successfully recovering from communication failures. We evaluate our PSR design with real-world testbeds, including SX1280 LoRa chips and USRP B210, under Wi-Fi interference in various scenarios. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our design offers reliable packet recovery performance, successfully boosting the LoRa packet reception ratio from 45.2% to 82.2% with a performance gain of 1.8 times.
