Fully Finite Element Adaptive Algebraic Multigrid Method for Time-Space Caputo-Riesz Fractional Diffusion Equations

The paper aims to establish a fully discrete finite element (FE) scheme and provide cost-effective solutions for one-dimensional time-space Caputo-Riesz fractional diffusion equations on a bounded domain $Ω$. Firstly, we construct a fully discrete scheme of the linear FE method in both temporal and spatial directions, derive many characterizations on the coefficient matrix and numerically verify that the fully FE approximation possesses the saturation error order under $L^2(Ω)$ norm. Secondly, we theoretically prove the estimation $1+\mathcal{O}(τ^αh^{-2β})$ on the condition number of the coefficient matrix, in which $τ$ and $h$ respectively denote time and space step sizes. Finally, on the grounds of the estimation and fast Fourier transform, we develop and analyze an adaptive algebraic multigrid (AMG) method with low algorithmic complexity, reveal a reference formula to measure the strength-of-connection tolerance which severely affect the robustness of AMG methods in handling fractional diffusion equations, and illustrate the well robustness and high efficiency of the proposed algorithm compared with the classical AMG, conjugate gradient and Jacobi iterative methods.

Phase limitations of Zames-Falb multipliers

Phase limitations of both continuous-time and discrete-time Zames-Falb multipliers and their relation with the Kalman conjecture are analysed. A phase limitation for continuous-time multipliers given by Megretski is generalised and its applicability is clarified; its relation to the Kalman conjecture is illustrated with a classical example from the literature. It is demonstrated that there exist fourth-order plants where the existence of a suitable Zames-Falb multiplier can be discarded and for which simulations show unstable behavior. A novel phase-limitation for discrete-time Zames-Falb multipliers is developed. Its application is demonstrated with a second-order counterexample to the Kalman conjecture. Finally, the discrete-time limitation is used to show that there can be no direct counterpart of the off-axis circle criterion in the discrete-time domain.

Free Side-channel Cross-technology Communication in Wireless Networks

Enabling direct communication between wireless technologies immediately brings significant benefits including, but not limited to, cross-technology interference mitigation and context-aware smart operation. To explore the opportunities, we propose FreeBee -- a novel cross-technology communication technique for direct unicast as well as cross-technology/channel broadcast among three popular technologies of WiFi, ZigBee, and Bluetooth. The key concept of FreeBee is to modulate symbol messages by shifting the timings of periodic beacon frames already mandatory for diverse wireless standards. This keeps our design generically applicable across technologies and avoids additional bandwidth consumption (i.e., does not incur extra traffic), allowing continuous broadcast to safely reach mobile and/or duty-cycled devices. A new \emph{interval multiplexing} technique is proposed to enable concurrent bro\-adcasts from multiple senders or boost the transmission rate of a single sender. Theoretical and experimental exploration reveals that FreeBee offers a reliable symbol delivery under a second and supports mobility of 30mph and low duty-cycle operations of under 5%.

Multi-Pair Two-Way Relay Network with Harvest-Then-Transmit Users: Resolving Pairwise Uplink-Downlink Coupling

While two-way relaying is a promising way to enhance the spectral efficiency of wireless networks, the imbalance of relay-user distances may lead to excessive wireless power at the nearby-users. To exploit the excessive power, the recently proposed harvest-then-transmit technique can be applied. However, it is well-known that harvest-then-transmit introduces uplink-downlink coupling for a user. Together with the co-dependent relationship between paired users and interference among multiple user pairs, wirelessly powered two-way relay network suffers from the unique pairwise uplink-downlink coupling, and the joint uplink-downlink network design is nontrivial. To this end, for the one pair users case, we show that a global optimal solution can be obtained. For the general case of multi-pair users, based on the rank-constrained difference of convex program, a convergence guaranteed iterative algorithm with an efficient initialization is proposed. Furthermore, a lower bound to the performance of the optimal solution is derived by introducing virtual receivers at relay. Numerical results on total transmit power show that the proposed algorithm achieves a transmit power value close to the lower bound.

NOMA based Calibration for Large-Scale Spaceborne Antenna Arrays

In the parallel calibration for transmitting phased arrays, the calibration receiver must separate the signals belonging to different antenna elements to avoid mutual interference. Existing algorithms encode different antenna elements' radiation with orthogonal signature codes, but these algorithms are far from desired for large-scale spaceborne antenna arrays. Considering the strictly limited resources on satellites, to improve hardware efficiency of large-scale spaceborne antenna arrays, in this work inspired by the idea of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) we design a series of non-orthogonal signature codes for different antenna elements by Cyclically Shifting an m-Sequence (CSmS) with different offsets named as CSmS-NOMA signaling. This design can strike an elegant balance between the performance and complexity and is very suitable for large-scale spaceborne antenna arrays. It is shown that no matter how many antenna elements there are to be calibrated simultaneously, CSmS-NOMA signaling needs only one calibrating waveform generator and one matched filter. Hence it is much more efficient than the existing fully orthogonal schemes. In order to evaluate the achievable calibration accuracy, a unified theoretical framework is developed based on which the relationship between calibration accuracy and signal to noise ratio (SNR) has been clearly revealed. Furthermore, a hardware experiment platform is also built to assess the theoretical work. For all the considered scenarios, it can be concluded that the theoretical, simulated and experimental results coincide with each other perfectly.

Achieving Spectrum Efficient Communication Under Cross-Technology Interference

In wireless communication, heterogeneous technologies such as WiFi, ZigBee and BlueTooth operate in the same ISM band. With the exponential growth in the number of wireless devices, the ISM band becomes more and more crowded. These heterogeneous devices have to compete with each other to access spectrum resources, generating cross-technology interference (CTI). Since CTI may destroy wireless communication, this field is facing an urgent and challenging need to investigate spectrum efficiency under CTI. In this paper, we introduce a novel framework to address this problem from two aspects. On the one hand, from the perspective of each communication technology itself, we propose novel channel/link models to capture the channel/link status under CTI. On the other hand, we investigate spectrum efficiency from the perspective by taking all heterogeneous technologies as a whole and building crosstechnology communication among them. The capability of direct communication among heterogeneous devices brings great opportunities to harmoniously sharing the spectrum with collaboration rather than competition.

From Physical to Cyber: Escalating Protection for Personalized Auto Insurance

Nowadays, auto insurance companies set personalized insurance rate based on data gathered directly from their customers' cars. In this paper, we show such a personalized insurance mechanism -- wildly adopted by many auto insurance companies -- is vulnerable to exploit. In particular, we demonstrate that an adversary can leverage off-the-shelf hardware to manipulate the data to the device that collects drivers' habits for insurance rate customization and obtain a fraudulent insurance discount. In response to this type of attack, we also propose a defense mechanism that escalates the protection for insurers' data collection. The main idea of this mechanism is to augment the insurer's data collection device with the ability to gather unforgeable data acquired from the physical world, and then leverage these data to identify manipulated data points. Our defense mechanism leveraged a statistical model built on unmanipulated data and is robust to manipulation methods that are not foreseen previously. We have implemented this defense mechanism as a proof-of-concept prototype and tested its effectiveness in the real world. Our evaluation shows that our defense mechanism exhibits a false positive rate of 0.032 and a false negative rate of 0.013.

Design and implementation of wire tension measurement system for MWPCs used in the STAR iTPC upgrade

The STAR experiment at RHIC is planning to upgrade the Time Projection Chamber which lies at the heart of the detector. We have designed an instrument to measure the tension of the wires in the multi-wire proportional chambers (MWPCs) which will be used in the TPC upgrade. The wire tension measurement system causes the wires to vibrate and then it measures the fundamental frequency of the oscillation via a laser based optical platform. The platform can scan the entire wire plane, automatically, in a single run and obtain the wire tension on each wire with high precision. In this paper, the details about the measurement method and the system setup will be described. In addition, the test results for a prototype MWPC to be used in the STAR-iTPC upgrade will be presented.

Modeling Review Spam Using Temporal Patterns and Co-bursting Behaviors

Online reviews play a crucial role in helping consumers evaluate and compare products and services. However, review hosting sites are often targeted by opinion spamming. In recent years, many such sites have put a great deal of effort in building effective review filtering systems to detect fake reviews and to block malicious accounts. Thus, fraudsters or spammers now turn to compromise, purchase or even raise reputable accounts to write fake reviews. Based on the analysis of a real-life dataset from a review hosting site (dianping.com), we discovered that reviewers' posting rates are bimodal and the transitions between different states can be utilized to differentiate spammers from genuine reviewers. Inspired by these findings, we propose a two-mode Labeled Hidden Markov Model to detect spammers. Experimental results show that our model significantly outperforms supervised learning using linguistic and behavioral features in identifying spammers. Furthermore, we found that when a product has a burst of reviews, many spammers are likely to be actively involved in writing reviews to the product as well as to many other products. We then propose a novel co-bursting network for detecting spammer groups. The co-bursting network enables us to produce more accurate spammer groups than the current state-of-the-art reviewer-product (co-reviewing) network.

Joint Transceiver and Power Splitter Design Over Two-Way Relaying Channel with Lattice Codes and Energy Harvesting

This letter considers a compute-and-forward two-way relaying channel with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer. Specifically, two single-antenna users exchange information via a multi-antenna relay station based on nested lattice codes. Meanwhile, wireless energies flow from the relay to users for circuit consumption and uplink transmission. Based on this model, an optimization problem is formulated to minimize the transmit power at relay, while guaranteeing the minimal transmission rate at each user. To solve the problem, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm to jointly optimize the transmitter, receiver and power splitter, based on semi-definite relaxation and semi-definite programming. Numerical results of relay transmission powers validate our analysis.

Joint Relay-User Beamforming Design in Full-Duplex Two-Way Relay Channel

A full-duplex two-way relay channel with multiple antennas is considered. For this three-node network, the beamforming design needs to suppress self-interference. While a traditional way is to apply zero-forcing for self-interference mitigation, it may harm the desired signals. In this paper, a design which reserves a fraction of self-interference is proposed by solving a quality-of-service constrained beamforming design problem. Since the problem is challenging due to the loop self-interference, a convergence-guaranteed alternating optimization algorithm is proposed to jointly design the relay-user beamformers. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme outperforms zero-forcing method, and achieves a transmit power close to the ideal case.

Translingual Obfuscation

Program obfuscation is an important software protection technique that prevents attackers from revealing the programming logic and design of the software. We introduce translingual obfuscation, a new software obfuscation scheme which makes programs obscure by "misusing" the unique features of certain programming languages. Translingual obfuscation translates part of a program from its original language to another language which has a different programming paradigm and execution model, thus increasing program complexity and impeding reverse engineering. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of translingual obfuscation with Prolog, a logic programming language. We implement translingual obfuscation in a tool called BABEL, which can selectively translate C functions into Prolog predicates. By leveraging two important features of the Prolog language, i.e., unification and backtracking, BABEL obfuscates both the data layout and control flow of C programs, making them much more difficult to reverse engineer. Our experiments show that BABEL provides effective and stealthy software obfuscation, while the cost is only modest compared to one of the most popular commercial obfuscators on the market. With BABEL, we verified the feasibility of translingual obfuscation, which we consider to be a promising new direction for software obfuscation.

A phase-field model of relaxor ferroelectrics based on random field theory

A mechanically coupled phase-field model is proposed for the first time to simulate the peculiar behavior of relaxor ferroelectrics. Based on the random field theory for relaxors, local random fields are introduced to characterize the effect of chemical disorder. This generic model is developed from a thermodynamic framework and the microforce theory and is implemented by a nonlinear finite element method. Simulation results show that the model can reproduce relaxor features, such as domain miniaturization, small remnant polarization and large piezoelectric response. In particular, the influence of random field strength on these features are revealed. Simulation results on domain structure and hysteresis behavior are discussed and compared with related experimental results.

Magnetic interactions in FeSe studied by first principle calculations

Based on first principle calculations we have investigated the evolution of magnetism in free-standing monolayer FeSe with respect to lattice constant and magnetism in bulk FeSe. The computational results show that the magnetic order in free-standing monolayer FeSe will change from anti-ferromagnetic pair-checkboard order to stripe collinear order along with enlarging lattice constant. The magnetic order in bulk FeSe will change from stripe collinear order to anti-ferromagnetic pair-checkboard order only if structure reconstruction is allowed. We use J$_1$-J$_2$-K$_1$ model to fit the calculated total energies of different magnetic orders to study magnetic interaction strengths in FeSe. The fitting results of J$_1$-J$_2$-K$_1$ indicate that magnetic interactions in FeSe are quite strong and highly frustrated, and increase slowly with enlarging lattice parameter.

The Kirchhoff-Braess Paradox and Its Implications for Smart Microgrids

Well known in the theory of network flows, Braess paradox states that in a congested network, it may happen that adding a new path between destinations can increase the level of congestion. In transportation networks the phenomenon results from the decisions of network participants who selfishly seek to optimize their own performance metrics. In an electric power distribution network, an analogous increase in congestion can arise as a consequence Kirchhoff's laws. Even for the simplest linear network of resistors and voltage sources, the sudden appearance of congestion due to an additional conductive line is a nonlinear phenomenon that results in a discontinuous change in the network state. It is argued that the phenomenon can occur in almost any grid in which they are loops, and with the increasing penetration of small-scale distributed generation it suggests challenges ahead in the operation of microgrids.

Continuous-variable quantum teleportation with non-Gaussian entangled states generated via multiple-photon subtraction and addition

We theoretically analyze the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) correlation, the quadrature squeezing, and the continuous-variable quantum teleportation when considering non-Gaussian entangled states generated by applying multiple-photon subtraction and multiple-photon addition to a two-mode squeezed vacuum state (TMSVs). Our results indicate that in the case of the multiple-photon-subtracted TMSVs with symmetric operations, the corresponding EPR correlation, the two-mode squeezing degree, the sum squeezing, and the fidelity of teleporting a coherent state or a squeezed vacuum state can be enhanced for any squeezing parameter r and these enhancements increase with the number of subtracted photons in the low-squeezing regime, while asymmetric multiple-photon subtractions will generally reduce these quantities. For the multiple-photon-added TMSVs, although it holds stronger entanglement, its EPR correlation, two-mode squeezing, sum squeezing, and the fidelity of a coherent state are always smaller than that of the TMSVs. Only when considering the case of teleporting a squeezed vacuum state does the symmetric photon addition make somewhat of an improvement in the fidelity for large-squeezing parameters. In addition, we analytically prove that a one-mode multiple-photon-subtracted TMSVs is equivalent to that of the one-mode multiple-photon-added one. And one-mode multiple-photon operations will diminish the above four quantities for any squeezing parameter r.

The effect of surfactants and their concentrations on the liquid-exfoliation of graphene

We investigated the effect of surfactants and their concentration (Csur) on the final graphene concentration (CG) via the liquid-phase exfoliation method. Six typical surfactants including ionic and non-ionic ones were explored and the optimized Csur for each surfactant was suggested. For ionic surfactants, CG increases with Csur before reaching its maximum and then maintains the high level. The different mechanisms of ionic and non-ionic surfactants in stabilizing graphene dispersions are explained by the theory for colloidal stability. The as-prepared graphene sheets are verified to be highly exfoliated through transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy studies, while the defect-free structure was evidenced by Raman spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Evolution of the single-mode squeezed vacuum state in amplitude dissipative channel

Using the way of deriving infinitive sum representation of density operator as a solution to the master equation describing the amplitude dissipative channel by virtue of the entangled state representation, we show manifestly how the initial density operator of a single-mode squeezed vacuum state evolves into a definite mixed state which turns out to be a squeezed chaotic state with decreasing-squeezing. We investigate average photon number, photon statistics distributions for this state.
