On the supremum of random cusp forms

A random ensemble of cusp forms for the full modular group is introduced. For a weight-$k$ cusp form, restricted to a compact subdomain of the modular surface, the true order of magnitude of its expected supremum is determined to be $\asymp \sqrt{\log{k}}$, in line with the conjectured bounds. Additionally, the exponential concentration of the supremum around its median is established. Contrary to the compact case, it is shown that the global expected supremum, which is attained around the cusp, grows like $k^{1/4}$, up to a logarithmic factor.

The hyperbolic circle problem over Heegner points

For the full modular group, we obtain a logarithmic improvement on Selberg's long-standing bound for the error term of the counting function in the hyperbolic circle problem over Heegner points of different discriminants. The main ingredients in our method are Waldspurger's formula, twisted first moments of certain Rankin-Selberg convolutions, and a new fractional moment estimate.

Mass equidistribution for Saito-Kurokawa lifts

Let $F$ be a holomorphic cuspidal Hecke eigenform for $\mathrm{Sp}_4(\mathbb{Z})$ of weight $k$ that is a Saito--Kurokawa lift. Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), we prove that the mass of $F$ equidistributes on the Siegel modular variety as $k\longrightarrow \infty$. As a corollary, we show under GRH that the zero divisors of Saito--Kurokawa lifts equidistribute as their weights tend to infinity.

Around the Gauss circle problem: Hardy's conjecture and the distribution of lattice points near circles

Hardy conjectured that the error term arising from approximating the number of lattice points lying in a radius-$R$ disc by its area is $O(R^{1/2+o(1)})$. One source of support for this conjecture is a folklore heuristic that uses i.i.d. random variables to model the lattice points lying near the boundary and square-root cancellation of sums of these random variables. We examine this heuristic by studying how these lattice points interact with one another and prove that their autocorrelation is determined in terms of a random model. Additionally, it is shown that lattice points near the boundary which are "well separated" behave independently. We also formulate a conjecture concerning the distribution of pairs of these lattice points.

Weighted central limit theorems for central values of $L$-functions

We establish a central limit theorem for the central values of Dirichlet $L$-functions with respect to a weighted measure on the set of primitive characters modulo $q$ as $q \rightarrow \infty$. Under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), we also prove a weighted central limit theorem for the joint distribution of the central $L$-values corresponding to twists of two distinct primitive Hecke eigenforms. As applications, we obtain (under GRH) positive proportions of twists for which the central $L$-values simultaneously grow or shrink with $q$ as well as a positive proportion of twists for which linear combinations of the central $L$-values are nonzero.

On fundamental Fourier coefficients of Siegel cusp forms of degree 2

Let $F$ be a Siegel cusp form of degree 2, even weight $k \geq 2$ and odd squarefree level $N$. We undertake a detailed study of the analytic properties of Fourier coefficients $a(F,S)$ of $F$ at fundamental matrices $S$ (i.e., with $-4 det(S)$ equal to a fundamental discriminant). We prove that as $S$ varies along the equivalence classes of fundamental matrices with $det(S) \asymp X$, the sequence $a(F,S)$ has at least $X^{1-\epsilon}$ sign changes, and takes at least $X^{1-\epsilon}$ "large values". Furthermore, assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis as well as the refined Gan--Gross--Prasad conjecture, we prove the bound $|a(F,S)| \ll_{F, \epsilon} \frac{\det(S)^{\frac{k}2 - \frac{1}{2}}}{ (\log |\det(S)|)^{\frac18 - \epsilon}}$ for fundamental matrices $S$.

On the distribution of lattice points on hyperbolic circles

We study the fine distribution of lattice points lying on expanding circles in the hyperbolic plane $\mathbb{H}$. The angles of lattice points arising from the orbit of the modular group $PSL_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$, and lying on hyperbolic circles, are shown to be equidistributed for generic radii. However, the angles fail to equidistribute on a thin set of exceptional radii, even in the presence of growing multiplicity. Surprisingly, the distribution of angles on hyperbolic circles turns out to be related to the angular distribution of $\mathbb{Z}^2$-lattice points (with certain parity conditions) lying on circles in $\mathbb{R}^2$, along a thin subsequence of radii. A notable difference is that measures in the hyperbolic setting can break symmetry - on very thin subsequences they are not invariant under rotation by $\frac{\pi}{2}$, unlike the Euclidean setting where all measures have this invariance property.

Quantum variance for dihedral Maass forms

We establish an asymptotic formula for the weighted quantum variance of dihedral Maass forms on $\Gamma_0(D) \backslash \mathbb H$ in the large eigenvalue limit, for certain fixed $D$. As predicted in the physics literature, the resulting quadratic form is related to the classical variance of the geodesic flow on $\Gamma_0(D) \backslash \mathbb H$, but also includes factors that are sensitive to underlying arithmetic of the number field $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{D})$.

Superscars for Arithmetic Point Scatterers II

We consider momentum push-forwards of measures arising as quantum limits (semi-classical measures) of eigenfunctions of a point scatterer on the standard flat torus $\mathbb T^2 = \mathbb R^2/\mathbb Z^{2}$. Given any probability measure arising by placing delta masses, with equal weights, on $\mathbb Z^2$-lattice points on circles and projecting to the unit circle, we show that the mass of certain subsequences of eigenfunctions, in momentum space, completely localizes on that measure and is completely delocalized in position (i.e., concentration on Lagrangian states.) We also show that the mass, in momentum, can fully localize on more exotic measures, e.g. singular continous ones with support on Cantor sets. Further, we can give examples of quantum limits that are certain convex combinations of such measures, in particular showing that the set of quantum limits is richer than the ones arising only from weak limits of lattice points on circles. The proofs exploit features of the half-dimensional sieve and behavior of multiplicative functions in short intervals.

Signs of Fourier coefficients of half-integral weight modular forms

Let $g$ be a Hecke cusp form of half-integral weight, level $4$ and belonging to Kohnen's plus subspace. Let $c(n)$ denote the $n$th Fourier coefficient of $g$, normalized so that $c(n)$ is real for all $n \geq 1$. A theorem of Waldspurger determines the magnitude of $c(n)$ at fundamental discriminants $n$ by establishing that the square of $c(n)$ is proportional to the central value of a certain $L$-function. The signs of the sequence $c(n)$ however remain mysterious. Conditionally on the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we show that $c(n) < 0$ and respectively $c(n) > 0$ holds for a positive proportion of fundamental discriminants $n$. Moreover we show that the sequence $\{c(n)\}$ where $n$ ranges over fundamental discriminants changes sign a positive proportion of the time. Unconditionally, it is not known that a positive proportion of these coefficients are non-zero and we prove results about the sign of $c(n)$ which are of the same quality as the best known non-vanishing results. Finally we discuss extensions of our result to general half-integral weight forms $g$ of level $4 N$ with $N$ odd, square-free.

An effective universality theorem for the Riemann zeta-function

Let $0 0$, once $T$ is large enough. This was refined by Bagchi who showed that the measure of such $t \in [0,T]$ is $(c(\varepsilon) + o(1)) T$, for all but at most countably many $\varepsilon > 0$. Using a completely different approach, we obtain the first effective version of Voronin's Theorem, by showing that in the rate of convergence one can save a small power of the logarithm of $T$. Our method is flexible, and can be generalized to other $L$-functions in the $t$-aspect, as well as to families of $L$-functions in the conductor aspect.

Quantum Unique Ergodicity for half-integral weight forms

We investigate the analogue of the Quantum Unique Ergodicity (QUE) conjecture for half-integral weight automorphic forms. Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH) we establish QUE for both half-integral weight holomorphic Hecke cusp forms for $\Gamma_0(4)$ lying in Kohnen's plus subspace and for half-integral weight Hecke Maa{\ss} cusp forms for $\Gamma_0(4)$ lying in Kohnen's plus subspace. By combining the former result along with an argument of Rudnick, it follows that under GRH the zeros of these holomorphic Hecke cusp equidistribute with respect to hyperbolic measure on $\Gamma_0(4)\backslash \mathbb H$ as the weight tends to infinity.

Small scale equidistribution of eigenfunctions on the torus

We study the small scale distribution of the $L^2$ mass of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the flat torus $\mathbb T^d$. Given an orthonormal basis of eigenfunctions, we show the existence of a density one subsequence whose $L^2$ mass equidistributes at small scales. In dimension two our result holds all the way down to the Planck scale. For dimensions $d=3,4$ we can restrict to individual eigenspaces and show small scale equidistribution in that context. We also study irregularities of quantum equidistribution: We construct eigenfunctions whose $L^2$ mass does not equidistribute at all scales above the Planck scale. Additionally, in dimension $d=4$ we show the existence of eigenfunctions for which the proportion of $L^2$ mass in small balls blows up at certain scales.

On the variance of sums of divisor functions in short intervals

Given a positive integer $n$ the $k$-fold divisor function $d_k(n)$ equals the number of ordered $k$-tuples of positive integers whose product equals $n$. In this article we study the variance of sums of $d_k(n)$ in short intervals and establish asymptotic formulas for the variance of sums of $d_k(n)$ in short intervals of certain lengths for $k=3$ and for $k \ge 4$ under the assumption of the Lindel\"of hypothesis.

Small scale distribution of zeros and mass of modular forms

We study the behavior of zeros and mass of holomorphic Hecke cusp forms on $SL_2(\mathbb Z) \backslash \mathbb H$ at small scales. In particular, we examine the distribution of the zeros within hyperbolic balls whose radii shrink sufficiently slowly as $k \rightarrow \infty$. We show that the zeros equidistribute within such balls as $k \rightarrow \infty$ as long as the radii shrink at a rate at most a small power of $1/\log k$. This relies on a new, effective, proof of Rudnick's theorem on equidistribution of the zeros and on an effective version of Quantum Unique Ergodicity for holomorphic forms, which we obtain in this paper. We also examine the distribution of the zeros near the cusp of $SL_2(\mathbb Z) \backslash \mathbb H$. Ghosh and Sarnak conjectured that almost all the zeros here lie on two vertical geodesics. We show that for almost all forms a positive proportion of zeros high in the cusp do lie on these geodesics. For all forms, we assume the Generalized Lindel\"of Hypothesis and establish a lower bound on the number of zeros that lie on these geodesics, which is significantly stronger than the previous unconditional results.

On the distribution of the divisor function and Hecke eigenvalues

We investigate the behavior of the divisor function in both short intervals and in arithmetic progressions. The latter problem was recently studied by \'E. Fouvry, S. Ganguly, E. Kowalski, and Ph. Michel. We prove a complementary result to their main theorem. We also show that in short intervals of certain lengths the divisor function has a Gaussian limiting distribution. The analogous problems for Hecke eigenvalues are also considered.

Discrepancy bounds for the distribution of the Riemann zeta-function and applications

We investigate the distribution of the Riemann zeta-function on the line $\Re(s)=\sigma$. For $\tfrac 12 < \sigma \le 1$ we obtain an upper bound on the discrepancy between the distribution of $\zeta(s)$ and that of its random model, improving results of Harman and Matsumoto. Additionally, we examine the distribution of the extreme values of $\zeta(s)$ inside of the critical strip, strengthening a previous result of the first author. As an application of these results we obtain the first effective error term for the number of solutions to $\zeta(s) = a$ in a strip $\tfrac12 < \sigma_1 < \sigma_2 < 1$. Previously in the strip $\tfrac 12 < \sigma < 1$ only an asymptotic estimate was available due to a result of Borchsenius and Jessen from 1948 and effective estimates were known only slightly to the left of the half-line, under the Riemann hypothesis (due to Selberg) and to the right of the abscissa of absolute convergence (due to Matsumoto). In general our results are an improvement of the classical Bohr-Jessen framework and are also applicable to counting the zeros of the Epstein zeta-function.
