Tuning the Fermi Liquid Crossover in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ with Uniaxial Stress

We perform nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of the oxygen-17 Knight shifts for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, while subjected to uniaxial stress applied along [100] direction. The resulting strain is associated with a strong variation of the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the inferred magnetic response. A quasi-particle description based on density-functional theory calculations, supplemented by many-body renormalizations, is found to reproduce our experimental results, and highlights the key role of a van-Hove singularity. The Fermi liquid coherence scale is shown to be tunable by strain, and driven to low values as the associated Lifshitz transition is approached.

$T_c$ and Pauli limited critical field of $\text{Sr}_2\text{Ru}\text{O}_4$: uniaxial strain dependence

Variations of critical temperature $T_c$ and in-plane critical field $H_{c2}$ of $\text{Sr}_2\text{Ru}\text{O}_4$ under uniaxial stress have recently been reported. We compare the strain dependence of $T_c$ and $H_{c2}$ in various pairing channels ($d$-wave, extended s-wave and $p$-wave) with the experimental observations, by studying a three-band tight-binding model that includes effects of spin-orbit and Zeeman couplings and a separable pairing interaction. Our study helps narrow down the possibility of pairing channels. The importance of the multi-band nature of $\text{Sr}_2\text{Ru}\text{O}_4$ is also highlighted.

Charge ordering and ferrimagnetism in the strongly correlated $\beta$-V$_2$PO$_5$ single crystal

A combined study of transport, thermodynamic, neutron diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance measurements and first principles calculation were performed for $\beta$-V$_2$PO$_5$ single crystal. It was shown to be a semiconductor with a band gap of 0.48 eV, undergoing a charge ordering (unusual V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$) phase transition accompanied by a tetragonal to monoclinic structural distortion at 610 K and a paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic phase transition at 128 K with a propagation vector of $\textbf{k} = 0$. The easy axis is in the monoclinic $ac$ plane pointing 47(9)$^\circ$ away from the monoclinic $a$ axis. This collinear ferrimagnetic structure and anisotropic isothermal magnetization measurements suggest weak magnetic anisotropy in this compound. The first principles calculations indicate that the intra-chain interactions in the face-sharing VO$_6$ chains dominate the magnetic hamiltonian and identify the $\Gamma_5^+$ normal mode of the lattice vibration to be responsible for the charge ordering and thus the structural phase transition.

A Magnetic Model of the Tetragonal-Orthorhombic Transition in the Cuprates

It is shown that a quasi two dimensional (layered) Heisenberg antiferromagnet with fully frustrated interplane couplings ({\it e.g.} on a body-centered tetragonal lattice) generically exhibits two thermal phase transitions with lowering temperature -- an upper transition at $T_{TO}$ (``order from disorder without order'') in which the lattice point-group symmetry is spontaneously broken, and a lower Néel transition at $T_{N}$ at which spin-rotation symmetry is broken. Although this is the same sequence of transitions observed in La$_2$CuO$_4$, in the Heisenberg model (without additional lattice degrees of freedom) $(T_{TO}-T_N) /T_N$ is much smaller than is observed. The model may apply to the bilayer cuprate La$_2$CaCuO$_6$, in which the transitions are nearly coincident.
