Realizing a symmetry protected topological phase through dimerized interactions

We show that in a system of one dimensional spinless fermions a topological phase and phase transition can emerge only through interaction. By allowing a dimerized or bond-alternating nearest neighbour interaction we show that the system exhibits a symmetry protected topological phase while its non-interacting limit is a gapless state. The non-trivial topological character appears due to the onset of two degenerate bond-order phases as a function of dimerized interaction which are found to be topologically distinct from each other. As a result a topological phase transition occurs between these bond order phases through a gap closing point. However, in the limit of strong interaction, the bond order phases are connected through a gapped charge density wave phase possessing local antiferromagnetic order. The topological nature is characterized by the edge states, Berry phase and non-local string order parameter. At the end we provide possible experimental signatures of the emergent symmetry protected topological phase transition in terms of Thouless charge pumping and density-density correlation.

Self organized criticality of magnetic avalanches in disordered ferrimagnetic material

We observe multiple step-like jumps in a Dy-Fe-Ga-based ferrimagnetic alloy in its magnetic hysteresis curve at 2 K. The observed jumps have a stochastic character with respect to their magnitude and the critical field of occurrence, and the jumps do not show any temporal effect. The jump size distribution follows a power law variation indicating the scale invariance nature of the jumps. We have invoked a simple two-dimensional random bond Ising-type spin system to model the dynamics. Our computational work can qualitatively reproduce the jumps and their scale invariant character. It also elucidates that the flipping of antiferromagnetically coupled Dy and Fe clusters is responsible for the observed discrete avalanche-like features in the hysteresis loop. These characteristics indicate that the present phenomenon can be well described within the realm of self-organized criticality

Signatures of non-trivial pairing in the quantum walk of two-component bosons

Nearest neighbour bosons possessing only onsite interactions do not form onsite bound pairs in their quantum walk due to fermionization. We obtain signatures of non-trivial onsite pairing in the quantum walk of strongly interacting two component bosons in a one dimensional lattice. By considering an initial state with particles from different components located at the nearest-neighbour sites in the central region of the lattice, we show that in the dynamical evolution of the system, competing intra- and inter-component onsite repulsion leads to the formation of onsite inter-component bound states. We find that when the total number of particles is three, an inter-component pair is favoured in the limit of equal intra- and inter-component interaction strengths. However, when two bosons from each species are considered, inter-component pairs and trimer are favoured depending on the ratios of the intra- and inter-component interactions. In both the cases, we find that the quantum walks exhibit a re-entrant behaviour as a function of inter-component interaction.

Six-wave mixing of optical and microwave fields using Rydberg excitations in thermal atomic vapor

Rydberg EIT-based microwave sensing has limited microwave-to-optical conversion bandwidth due to fundamental limitation in the optical pumping rate to its dark state. We demonstrate a parametric six-wave mixing of optical probe and coupling fields driving the atoms to a Rydberg state via two-photon excitation and two microwave fields with frequency offset of $δ$ driving the Rydberg-Rydberg transition in thermal atomic vapor. Microwave-to-optical conversion bandwidth of $17$ MHz is achieved in the present experiment which is limited by the available coupling power. Further theoretical investigation of the system presents higher modulation bandwidth with larger coupling Rabi frequency.

Emergence of multiple localization transitions in a one-dimensional quasiperiodic lattice

Low dimensional quasiperiodic systems exhibit localization transitions by turning all quantum states localized after a critical quasidisorder. While certain systems with modified or constrained quasiperiodic potential undergo multiple localization transitions in one dimension, we predict an emergence of multiple localization transitions without directly imposing any constraints on the quasiperiodic potential. By considering a one-dimensional system described by the Aubry-Andŕe (AA) model, we show that an additional staggered onsite potential can drive the system through a series of localization transitions as a function of the staggered potential. Interestingly, we find that the number of localization transitions strongly depends on the strength of the quasiperiodic potential. Moreover, we obtain the signatures of these localization transitions in the expansion dynamics and propose an experimental scheme for their detection in the quantum gas experiment.

Competing insulating phases of dipolar bosons in a dimerized optical lattice

We study the ground state properties of dipolar bosons in a one dimensional dimerized optical lattice. In the limit of strong onsite repulsion i.e. hardcore bosons, and strong dipole-dipole interaction, a stable density wave (DW) phase is obtained at half filling as a function of lattice dimerization. Interestingly, at quarter filling we obtain the signatures of an insulating phase which has both the character the bond-order (BO) and the DW insulators which we call a bond-order density wave (BODW) phase. Moreover, we show that for a fixed hopping dimerization there occurs a BO-DW phase crossover as a function of the dipole-dipole interaction and the BODW phase is more robust when the hopping dimerization is stronger. We further examine the stability of the BODW phase in the limit of finite onsite interactions.

Two component quantum walk in one-dimensional lattice with hopping imbalance

We investigate the two-component quantum walk in one-dimensional lattice. We show that the inter-component interaction strength together with the hopping imbalance between the components exhibit distinct features in the quantum walk for different initial states. When the walkers are initially on the same site, both the slow and fast particles perform independent particle quantum walks when the interaction between them is weak. However, stronger inter-particle interactions result in quantum walks by the repulsively bound pair formed between the two particles. For different initial states when the walkers are on different sites initially, the quantum walk performed by the slow particle is almost independent of that of the fast particle, which exhibits reflected and transmitted components across the particle with large hopping strength for weak interactions. Beyond a critical value of the interaction strength, the wave function of the fast particle ceases to penetrate through the slow particle signalling a spatial phase separation. However, when the two particles are initially at the two opposite edges of the lattice, then the interaction facilitates the complete reflection of both of them from each other. We analyze the above mentioned features by examining various physical quantities such as the on-site density evolution, two-particle correlation functions and transmission coefficients.

Competing magnetic interactions and magnetocaloric effect in Ho$_5$Sn$_3$

The rare-earth intermetallic compound Ho$_5$Sn$_3$ demonstrates fascinating magnetic properties which include temperature-driven multiple magnetic transitions and field driven metamagnetism. We address the magnetic character of this exciting compound through a combined experimental and theoretical studies. Ho$_5$Sn$_3$ orders antiferromagnetically below $~28$ K, and shows further spin reorientation transitions at 15 K and 12 K. We observe a sizable amount of low-temperature magnetocaloric effect in Ho$_5$Sn$_3$ with a maximum value of entropy change $ΔS$ = -9.5 JKg$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$ for an applied field of $H$ = 50 kOe at around 30 K. The field hysteresis is almost zero above 15 K where magneto-caloric effect is important. Interestingly, $ΔS$ is found to change its sign from positive to negative as the temperature is increased above about 8 K, which can be linked to the multiple spin reorientation transitions. The signature of the metamagnetism is visible in the $ΔS$ versus $H$ plot. The magnetic ground-state, obtained from the density functional theory based calculation, is susceptible to the effective Coulomb interaction ($U_{\rm eff}$) between electrons. Depending upon the value of $U_{\rm eff}$, the ground-state can be ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic. The compound shows large relaxation (14\% change in magnetization in 60 min) in the field cooled state with a logarithmic time variation, which may be connected to the competing magnetic ground-states observed in our theoretical calculations. The competing magnetic ground-states is also evident from the small value of the paramagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature.

A high throughput search of efficient thermoelectric half-Heusler compounds

Half-Heusler compounds have emerged as promising thermoelectric materials that offer huge compositional space to tune their thermoelectric performance. A class of stable half Heusler compounds formed from elements of three specific groups in the periodic table viz. X$_{p}$X$'_{1-p}$Y$_{q}$Y$'_{1-q}$Z$_{r}$Z$'_{1-r}$ (with X, X$'$= Ti, Zr, Hf, Y, Y$'$ = Ni, Pd, Pt and Z, Z$'$ = Ge, Sn, Pb and p, q, r = 0, 0.25, 0.75 and 1) via various stoichiometric isoelectronic elemental substitution at the X, Y and Z sites respectively is investigated. Intelligent filters are employed at each step of our high throughput density functional theory calculations to filter compounds with improved figure of merit. While confirming several known results, the calculations also reveal unknown pathways to improve the thermoelectric performance of the compound class. The 50% X as well as Z site substitution of the parent Heusler individually are found to marginally enhance the power factor for both the $p$- and $n$-type doping, while leading to considerable enhancement in the figure of merit (by $\sim$24 %) specifically due to lowering of the lattice thermal conductivity because of increase in lattice disorder in approximately the same cell volume. Furthermore, the present study confirms the experimental scenario that Y site substitution does not lead to enhancement of the powerfactor because of the breaking of band degeneracies at the high symmetry points. This work will serve as a consolidated cost effective guideline for experimentalist working with this compound class on enhancing the powerfactor and figure of merit of the compositions.

Two-body repulsive bound pairs in multi-body interacting Bose-Hubbard model

We study the system of multi-body interacting bosons on a two dimensional optical lattice and analyze the formation of bound bosonic pairs in the context of the Bose-Hubbard model. Assuming a repulsive two-body interaction we obtain the signatures of pair formation in the regions between the Mott insulator lobes of the phase diagram for different choices of higher order local interactions. Considering the most general Bose-Hubbard model involving local multi-body interactions we investigate the ground state properties utilizing the cluster mean-field theory approach and further confirm the results by means of sophisticated infinite Projected Entangled Pair States calculations. By using various order parameters, we show that the choice of higher-order interaction can lead to pair superfluid phase in the system between two different Mott lobes. We also analyze the effect of temperature and density-dependent tunneling to establish the stability of the PSF phase.

Topological inheritance in half-SSH Hubbard models

The interplay between interparticle interactions and topological features may result in unusual phenomena. Interestingly, interactions may induce topological features in an originally trivial system, as we illustrate for the case of a one-dimensional two-component Hubbard model in which one component is subjected to Su-Schrieffer-Heeger(SSH) dimerization, whereas the other one is not. We show that due to inter-component interactions the topological properties of one component are induced in the originally trivial one. Although for large interactions topological inheritance may be readily explained by on-site pairing, we show that the threshold for full inheritance occurs at weak interactions, for which the components are not yet paired. We illustrate this inheritance by discussing both bulk and edge properties, as well as dynamical observables as mean chiral displacement and charge pumping.

Quantum walks of interacting Mott insulator defects with three-body interactions

Quantum walks of interacting particles may display non-trivial features due to the interplay between the statistical nature and the many-body interactions associated to them. We analyze the quantum walk of interacting defects on top of an uniform bosonic Mott insulator at unit filling in an one dimensional graph. While the quantum walk of single particle defect shows trivial features, the case of two particles exhibits interesting phenomenon of quantum walk reversal as a function of additional onsite three-body attractive interactions. In the absence of the three-body interaction a quantum walk of pairs of particles is obtained and as the strength of the three-body interaction becomes more and more attractive, the independent particle behavior in quantum walk appears. Interestingly, further increase in the three-body interaction leads to the re-appearance of the quantum walk associated to a pair of particles. This quantum-walk reversal phenomenon is studied using the real-space density evolution, Bloch oscillation as well as two-particle correlation functions.

Emergent photon pair propagation in circuit QED with superconducting processors

We propose a method to achieve photon pair propagation in an array of three-level superconducting circuits. Assuming experimentally accessible three-level artificial atoms with strong anharmonicity coupled via microwave transmission lines in both one and two dimensions we analyze the circuit Quantum Electrodynamics(QED) of the system. We explicitly show that for a suitable choice of the coupling ratio between different levels, the single photon propagation is suppressed and the propagation of photon pairs emerges. This propagation of photon pairs leads to the pair superfluid of polaritons associated to the system. We compute the complete phase diagram of the polariton quantum matter revealing the pair superfluid phase which is sandwiched between the vacuum and the Mott insulator state corresponding to the polariton density equal to two in the strong coupling regime.

Mott insulator phases of non-locally coupled bosons in bilayer optical superlattices

We investigate the ground state properties of a non-locally coupled bosonic system in a bilayer optical superlattice by considering bosons in one layer to be of softcore in nature and separately allowing two and three body hardcore constraints on the other layer. We find that the presence of different constraints on bosons in one layer influences the overall phase diagram exhibiting various Mott insulator phases at incommensurate densities due to the presence of the superlattice potential apart from the usual Mott insulators at commensurate densities. Moreover, the presence of two or three-body constraints significantly modifies the Mott insulator-Superfluid phase transition points as a function of the superlattice potential. Due to the various competing interactions, constraints and superlattice potential the phase diagrams exhibit significantly different features. We obtain the complete phase diagrams by using the cluster-mean-field theory approach. We further extend this work to a coupled two-leg ladder superlattice where we obtain similar physics using the density matrix renormalization group method .

Topological charge pumping of bound bosonic pairs

Experiments with bosonic atoms in optical superlattices allow for the interesting possibility to study the adiabatic quantized pumping of bosonic atoms in the presence of interactions. We investigate this exotic phenomenon for bound bosonic pairs in the paradigmatic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model where the ground state exhibits topological phase transitions due to dimerized hoppings. At unit filling we show that there exist crossovers and phase transitions to bond-order phases of paired bosons known as pair-bond-order phase as a function of attractive interactions. The pair bond order phase is found to exhibit effective topological properties such as the presence of polarized paired edge states. This is further analyzed by studying the emergence and breakdown of the Thouless charge pumping of this bound bosonic pairs by a parametric extension to the famous Rice-Mele model. Finally we discuss how the pumping of paired bosons or different regimes of breakdown of charge pumping can be probed by state-of-the art experiments with repulsively bound bosons.

Three-body constrained bosons in double-well optical lattice

We analyse the ground-state properties of three-body constrained bosons in a one dimensional optical lattice with staggered hoppings analogous to the double well optical lattice. By considering attractive and repulsive on-site interactions between the bosons, we obtain the phase diagram which exhibits various quantum phases. Due to the double-well geometry and three-body constraint several gapped phases such as the Mott insulators and dimer/bond-order phases emerge at commensurate densities in the repulsive interaction regime. Attractive interaction leads to the pair formation which leads to the pair bond order phase at unit filling which resembles the valence-bond solid phase of composite bosonic pairs. At incommensurate densities we see the signatures of the gapless pair superfluid phase.

Quantum phases of constrained dipolar bosons in coupled one-dimensional optical lattices

We investigate a system of two- and three-body constrained dipolar bosons in a pair of one-dimensional optical lattices coupled to each other by the non-local dipole-dipole interactions. Assuming attractive dipole-dipole interactions, we obtain the ground state phase diagram of the system by employing the cluster mean-field theory. The competition between the repulsive on-site and attractive nearest-neighbor interactions between the chains yields three kinds of superfluids; namely the trimer superfluid, pair superfluid and the usual single particle superfluid along with the insulating Mott phase at the commensurate density. Besides, we also realize simultaneous existence of Mott insulator and superfluid phases for the two- and three-body constrained bosons, respectively. We also analyze the stability of these quantum phases in the presence of a harmonic trap potential.
