Signature of topological transition in persistent current in a Dirac Ring

We study the persistent current in a one dimensional Dirac ring and show that the change of spin current with respect to an applied perpendicular electric field can be used to identify the topological phases. We further study the effect of Rashba spin orbit coupling and show that the Aharonov-Casher phase appearing due to Rashba spin orbit coupling vanishes in topologically nontrivial regime and thus can identify the topological phases. This Aharonov-Casher phase causes a finite spin-valley current in presence of valley mixing perturbation and is thus useful to detect the topological phases even in presence of such impurity.

Persistent current of relativistic electrons on a Dirac ring in presence of impurities

We study the behavior of persistent current of relativistic electrons on a one dimensional ring in presence of attractive/repulsive scattering potentials. In particular, we investigate the persistent current in accordance with the strength as well as the number of the scattering potential. We find that in presence of single scatterer the persistent current becomes smaller in magnitude than the scattering free scenario. This behaviour is similar to the non-relativistic case. Even for a very strong scattering potential, finite amount of persistent current remains for a relativistic ring. In presence of multiple scatterer we observe that the persistent current is maximum when the scatterers are placed uniformly compared to the current averaged over random configurations. However if we increase the number of scatterers, we find that the random averaged current increases with the number of scatterers. The latter behaviour is in contrast to the non-relativistic case.

Generalized Uncertainty Principle, Modified Dispersion Relation and Barrier penetration by a Dirac particle

We have studied the energy band structure of a Dirac particle in presence of a generalised uncertainty principle (GUP). We start from defining a modified momentum operator and derive corresponding modified dispersion relation (MDR) and GUP. Apart from the forbidden band within the range $\pm m$, $m$ being the mass of the particle, we find the existence of additional forbidden bands at the both ends of the spectrum. Such band structure forbids a Dirac particle to penetrate a potential step of sufficient height ($\sim E_P$, $E_P$ being Planck energy). This is also true for massless particle. Unlike the relativistic case, a massless particle also can reflect from a barrier of sufficient height. Finally we discuss about the Klein's paradox in presence of the GUP.

Relativistic fermion on a ring: Energy spectrum and persistent current

The energy and persistent current spectra for a relativistic fermion on a ring is studied in details. The nonlinear nature of persistent current in relativistic regime and its dependence on particle mass and ring radius are analysed thoroughly. For a particular ring radius we find the existence of a critical mass at which the single ring current doesn't depend on the flux. In lower mass regime the total current spectrum shows plateaus at different height which appears periodically. The susceptibility as well shows periodic nature with amplitude depending on particle mass. As we move from higher mass to lower mass regime, we find that the system turns into paramagnetic from diamagnetic. We also show that same behaviour is observed if one vary the radius of the ring for a fixed particle mass. Hence the larger ring will be diamagnetic while the smaller one will be paramagnetic. Finally we propose an experiment to verify our findings.

Charge and spin density waves: Quasi one dimension to two dimension

Possibility of electronic charge and spin separation leading to charge density wave and spin density wave is well established in one dimensional systems in presence and absence of Coulomb interaction. We start from quasi one dimension and show the possibility of such a transition in quasi one dimension as well as in two dimension by going to a regime where it can be shown for free electrons that just interact via Fermi statistics. Since Coulomb interaction can only facilitate the phenomenon, the purpose of our work is to show the phenomena unambiguously in the limit when Coulomb interaction can be ignored. Finally we also comment on dimensions greater than two and inclusion of Coulomb interactions.

New type of phase transition in Reissner Nordström - AdS black hole and its thermodynamic geometry

The phase transition of a RN-AdS black hole is studied in details using Ehrenfest's equations. There is no discontinuity in entropy which signals a lack of any first order phase transition. We then show that although Ehrenfest's first equation is satisfied, the second is not, so that a true second order phase transition is also ruled out. However this deviation from the second Ehrenfest's equation, for a certain range of the black hole charge, indicates the existence of a new glassy type transition. We finally study the thermodynamic behaviour using state space geometry and find that the scalar curvature diverges exactly at those points where the heat capacity diverges.

Generalised Uncertainty Principle, Remnant Mass and Singularity Problem in Black Hole Thermodynamics

We have derived a new Generalised Uncertainty Principle (GUP) based on certain general assumptions. This GUP is consistent with predictions from string theory. It is then used to study Schwarzschild black hole thermodynamics. Corrections to the mass-temperature relation, area law and heat capacity are obtained. We find that the evaporation process stops at a particular mass, referred as the remnant mass. This is instrumental in bypassing the well known singularity problem that occurs in a semiclassical approach.
