Isotropic parallel antiferromagnetism in the magnetic-field-induced charge-ordered state of SmRu$_4$P$_{12}$ caused by $p$-$f$ hybridization

Nature of the field-induced charge ordered phase (phase II) of SmRu$_4$P$_{12}$ has been investigated by resonant x-ray diffraction (RXD) and polarized neutron diffraction (PND), focusing on the relationship between the atomic displacements and the antiferromagnetic (AFM) moments of Sm. From the analysis of the interference between the non-resonant Thomson scattering and the resonant magnetic scattering, combined with the spectral function obtained from x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, it is shown that the AFM moment of Sm prefers to be parallel to the field ($m_{\text{AF}} \parallel H$), giving rise to large and small moment sites around which the P$_{12}$ and Ru cage contract and expand, respectively. This is associated with the formation of the staggered ordering of the $\Gamma_7$-like and $\Gamma_8$-like crystal-field states, providing a strong piece of evidence for the charge order. PND was also performed to obtain complementary and unambiguous conclusion. In addition, isotropic and continuous nature of the phase II is demonstrated by the field-direction invariance of the interference spectrum in RXD. Crucial role of the $p$-$f$ hybridization is shown by resonant soft x-ray diffraction at the P $K$-edge ($1s\leftrightarrow 3p$), where we detected a resonance due to the spin polarized $3p$ orbitals reflecting the AFM order of Sm.

Atomic displacements and lattice distortion in the magnetic-field-induced charge ordered state of SmRu$_{4}$P$_{12}$

Structural properties of SmRu$_4$P$_{12}$ in the anomalous magnetic ordered phase between $T^*\sim 14 $ K and $T_{\text{N}}=16.5$ K in magnetic fields has been studied by x-ray diffraction. Atomic displacements of Ru and P, reflecting the field-induced charge order of the $p$ electrons, have been deduced by analyzing the intensities of the forbidden Bragg peaks, assuming a cubic space group $Pm\bar{3}$. Also, by utilizing high-resolution x-ray diffraction experiment, we observed a splitting of fundamental Bragg peaks, clarifying that the unit cell in the magnetic ordered phase is rhombohedral elongated along the $[1\, 1\, 1]$ axis. Responses of the rhombohedral domains to the magnetic field, which reflects the direction of the magnetic moment, is studied in detail.

Synchrotron X-ray Spectroscopy Study on the Valence State in alpha- and beta-YbAlB4 at Low Temperatures and High Magnetic Fields

The valence state of Yb ions in beta-YbAlB4 and its polymorph alpha-YbAlB4 has been investigated by using X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy in SPring-8 at temperatures from 2 to 280 K. The observed Yb valence is 2.78 +- 0.01 in beta-YbAlB4 at 2 K by using the X-ray emission spectroscopy. The valence is found to gradually increase with increasing temperature toward the trivalent state, and the characteristic temperature of the valence fluctuation is expected to be about 290 K. We also found a small increase in the Yb valence (~0.002) by applying a magnetic field of 32 T at 40 K to beta-YbAlB4.

Suppression of f-Electron Itinerancy in CeRu2Si2 by a Strong Magnetic Field

The valence state of Ce in a canonical heavy fermion compound CeRu2Si2 has been investigated by synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy at 1.8 K in high magnetic fields of up to 40 T. The valence was slightly larger than for the pure trivalent state (Ce3+: f1), as expected in heavy fermion compounds, and it decreased toward the trivalent state as the magnetic field was increased. The field-induced valence reduction indicates that the itinerant character of the 4f electrons in CeRu2Si2 was suppressed by a strong magnetic field. The suppression was gradual and showed characteristic magnetic field dependence, which reflects the metamagnetism around Hm \sim 8 T. The itinerant character persisted, even at 40 T (\sim 5Hm), suggesting that the Kondo bound state is continuously broken by magnetic fields and that it should completely collapse at fields exceeding 200 T.

Polarization-analyzed resonant inelastic x-ray scattering of the orbital excitations in KCuF3

We report a Cu K-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of orbital excitations in KCuF3 . By performing the polarization analysis of the scattered photons, we disclose that the excitation between the eg orbitals and the excitations from t2g to eg exhibit distinct polarization dependence. The polarization dependence of the respective excitations is interpreted based on a phenomenological consideration of the symmetry of the RIXS process that yields a necessary condition for observing the excitations. In addition, we show that the orbital excitations are dispersionless within our experimental resolution.

X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism of Valence Fluctuating State in Eu at High Magnetic Fields

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Eu L-edge (2p->5d) in two compounds exhibiting valence fluctuation, namely EuNi2(Si0.18Ge0.82)2 and EuNi2P2, has been investigated at pulsed high magnetic fields of up to 40 T. A distinct XMCD peak corresponding to the trivalent state (Eu3+; f6), whose ground state is nonmagnetic (J=0), was observed in addition to the main XMCD peak corresponding to the magnetic (J=7/2) divalent state (Eu2+; f7). This result indicates that the 5d electrons belonging to both valence states are magnetically polarized. It was also found that the ratio P5d(3+)/P5d(2+) between the polarization of 5d electrons (P5d) in the Eu3+ state and that of Eu2+ is ~ 0.1 in EuNi2(Si0.18Ge0.82)2 and ~ 0.3 in EuNi2P2 at magnetic fields where their macroscopic magnetization values are the same. The possible origin of the XMCD of the Eu3+ state and an explanation of the dependence of P5d(3+)/P5d(2+) on the material are discussed in terms of hybridization between the conduction electrons and the f electrons.

Frustration-driven successive metamagnetic transitions in TbB4

Resonant magnetic x-ray diffraction experiments on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice TbB$_4$ were carried out under strong pulsed magnetic fields up to 30 T. TbB$_4$ exhibits a multi-step magnetization process above 16 T when magnetic fields are applied along the c-axis. We examined the intensity of the 010 magnetic reflection as a function of magnetic field and found that the magnetization plateau phases are accompanied by large XY components of magnetic moments, in contrast to normal fractional magnetization plateau phases. The magnetization was calculated using a simple spin model deduced from the above result. Finally we propose that frustration is the key to understanding the observed multi-step magnetization.

Momentum-resolved charge excitations in high-Tc cuprates studied by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We report a Cu K-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of high-Tc cuprates. Momentum-resolved charge excitations in the CuO2 plane are examined from parent Mott insulators to carrier-doped superconductors. The Mott gap excitation in undoped insulators is found to commonly show a larger dispersion along the [pi,pi] direction than the [pi,0] direction. On the other hand, the resonance condition displays material dependence. Upon hole doping, the dispersion of the Mott gap excitation becomes weaker and an intraband excitation appears as a continuum intensity below the gap at the same time. In the case of electron doping, the Mott gap excitation is prominent at the zone center and a dispersive intraband excitation is observed at finite momentum transfer.

Spin-lattice instability to a fractional magnetization state in the spinel HgCr2O4

Magnetic systems are fertile ground for the emergence of exotic states when the magnetic interactions cannot be satisfied simultaneously due to the topology of the lattice - a situation known as geometrical frustration. Spinels, AB2O4, can realize the most highly frustrated network of corner-sharing tetrahedra. Several novel states have been discovered in spinels, such as composite spin clusters and novel charge-ordered states. Here we use neutron and synchrotron X-ray scattering to characterize the fractional magnetization state of HgCr2O4 under an external magnetic field, H. When the field is applied in its Neel ground state, a phase transition occurs at H ~ 10 Tesla at which each tetrahedron changes from a canted Neel state to a fractional spin state with the total spin, Stet, of S/2 and the lattice undergoes orthorhombic to cubic symmetry change. Our results provide the microscopic one-to-one correspondence between the spin state and the lattice distortion.

Momentum Dependent Charge Excitations of Two-Leg Ladder: Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering of (La,Sr,Ca)14Cu24O41

Momentum dependent charge excitations of a two-leg ladder are investigated by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering of (La,Sr,Ca)14Cu24O41. In contrast to the case of a square lattice, momentum dependence of the Mott gap excitation of the ladder exhibits little change upon hole-doping, indicating the formation of hole pairs. Theoretical calculation based on a Hubbard model qualitatively explains this feature. In addition, experimental data shows intraband excitation as continuum intensity below the Mott gap and it appears at all the momentum transfers simultaneously. The intensity of the intraband excitation is proportional to the hole concentration of the ladder, which is consistent with optical conductivity measurements.

Change in lattice modulation upon gigantic magnetoelectric transition in GdMnO3 and TbMnO3

Single-crystal synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements in strong magnetic fields have been performed for magnetoelectric compounds GdMnO3 and TbMnO3. It has been found that the P || a ferroelectric phase induced by the application of a magnetic field at low temperatures is characterized by commensurate lattice modulation along the orthorhombic b axis with q = 1/2 and q = 1/4. The lattice modulation is ascribed to antiferromagnetic spin alignment with a modulation vector of (0 1/4 1). The change of the spin structure is directly correlated with the magnetic-field-induced electric phase transition, because any commensurate spin modulation with (0 1/4 1) should break glide planes normal to the a axis of the distorted perovskite with the Pbnm space group.

High field x-ray diffraction study on a magnetic-field-induced valence transition in YbInCu4

We report the first high-field x-ray diffraction experiment using synchrotron x-rays and pulsed magnetic fields exceeding 30 T. Lattice deformation due to a magnetic-field-induced valence transition in YbInCu4 is studied. It has been found that the Bragg reflection profile at 32 K changes significantly at around 27 T due to the structural transition. In the vicinity of the transition field the low-field and the high-field phases are observed simultaneously as the two distinct Bragg reflection peaks: This is a direct evidence of the fact that the field-induced valence state transition is the first order phase transition. The field-dependence of the low-field-phase Bragg peak intensity is found to be scaled with the magnetization.

Momentum Dependence of Charge Excitations in the Electron-Doped Superconductor Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4: a RIXS Study

We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of charge excitations in the electron-doped high-Tc superconductor Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4. The intraband and interband excitations across the Fermi energy are separated for the first time by tuning the experimental conditions properly to measure charge excitations at low energy. A dispersion relation with q-dependent width emerges clearly in the intraband excitation, while the intensity of the interband excitation is concentrated around 2 eV near the zone center. The experimental results are consistent with theoretical calculation of the RIXS spectra based on the Hubbard model.

Mott gap excitations in twin-free YBa2Cu3O7-d (Tc = 93 K) studied by RIXS

Mott gap excitations in the high-Tc superconductor of the optimal doped YBa2Cu3O7-d (Tc = 93 K) have been studied by the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering method. Anisotropic spectra in the ab-plane are observed in a twin-free crystal. The excitation from the one-dimensional CuO chain is enhanced at 2 eV near the zone boundary of the b* direction, while the excitation from the CuO2 plane is broad at 1.5-4 eV and almost independent of the momentum transfer. Theoretical calculation based on the one-dimensional and two-dimensional Hubbard model reproduces the observed spectra by taking the different parameters of the on-site Coulomb energy. The fact of the Mott gap of the CuO chain site is much smaller than that of CuO2 plane site is observed for the first time.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of hole-doped manganites La1-xSrxMnO3 (x=0.2 and 0.4)

Electronic excitations near the Fermi energy in the hole doped manganese oxides (La1-xSrxMnO3, x=0.2 and 0.4) have been elucidated by using the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) method. A doping effect in the strongly correlated electron systems has been observed for the first time. The scattering spectra show that a salient peak appears in low energies indicating the persistence of the Mott gap. At the same time, the energy gap is partly filled by doping holes and the energy of the spectral weight shifts toward lower energies. The excitation spectra show little change in the momentum space as is in undoped LaMnO3, but the scattering intensities in the low energy excitations of x=0.2 are anisotropic as well as temperature dependent, which indicates a reminiscence of the orbital nature.

Bilepton production in electron-gamma collisions

We study the production of bileptons, new gauge boson of lepton number two, in the minimal 3 - 3 - 1 model in high energy electron - photon collisions. If the bilepton masses are in the range of 300 GeV the reaction will give observable cross-sections in the future colliders.

Orbital excitations in CMR progenitor of LaMnO3 studied by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We report resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments of the orbital ordered manganite LaMnO3. When the incident photon energy is tuned near the Mn K absorption edge, the spectra reveal three features at 2.5 eV, 8 eV and 11 eV. The 8 eV and 11 eV peaks are considered charge-transfer type excitations. On the other hand, theoretical calculations identify the 2.5 eV peak as an orbital excitation across the Mott gap, i.e. an electron excitation from the lower Hubbard band with the d3x2-r2 and d3y2-r2 orbital characters to the upper Hubbard band with the dy2-z2 and dz2-x2 ones. The observed weak dispersion and characteristic azimuthal angle dependence of this new type of excitations are well reproduced by the theory which includes orbital degeneracy and strong electron correlation.

Magnetic ordering and fluctuation in kagome lattice antiferromagnets, Fe and Cr jarosites

Jarosite family compounds, KFe_3(OH)_6(SO_4)_2, (abbreviate Fe jarosite), and KCr_3(OH)_6(SO_4)_2, (Cr jarosite), are typical examples of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice and have been investigated by means of magnetization and NMR experiments. The susceptibility of Cr jarosite deviates from Curie-Weiss law due to the short-range spin correlation below about 150 K and shows the magnetic transition at 4.2 K, while Fe jarosite has the transition at 65 K. The susceptibility data fit well with the calculated one on the high temperature expansion for the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice. The values of exchange interaction of Cr jarosite and Fe jarosite are derived to be J_Cr = 4.9 K and J_Fe = 23 K, respectively. The 1H-NMR spectra of Fe jarosite suggest that the ordered spin structure is the q = 0 type with positive chirality of the 120 degrees configuration. The transition is caused by a weak single-ion type anisotropy. The spin-lattice relaxation rate, 1/T_1, of Fe jarosite in the ordered phase decreases sharply with lowering the temperature and can be well explained by the two-magnon process of spin wave with the anisotropy.
