Circular Dichroism in Atomic Resonance-Enhanced Few-Photon Ionization

We investigate few-photon ionization of lithium atoms prepared in the polarized 2$p$($m_\ell=\!+1$) state when subjected to femtosecond light pulses with left- or right-handed circular polarization at wavelengths between 665 nm and 920 nm. We consider whether ionization proceeds more favorably for the electric field co- or counter-rotating with the initial electronic current density. Strong asymmetries are found and quantitatively analyzed in terms of "circular dichroism" ($CD$). While the intensity dependence of the measured $CD$ values is rather weak throughout the investigated regime, a very strong sensitivity on the center wavelength of the incoming radiation is observed. While the co-rotating situation overall prevails, the counter-rotating geometry is strongly favored around 800 nm due to the 2$p$-3$s$ resonant transition, which can only be driven by counter-rotating fields. The observed features provide insights into the helicity dependence of light-atom interactions, and on the possible control of electron emission in atomic few-photon ionization by polarization-selective resonance enhancement.

Observation of Spin-Dependent Charge Symmetry Breaking in $\Lambda N$ Interaction: Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy of $^4_{\Lambda }$He

The energy spacing between the ground-state spin doublet of $^4_\Lambda $He(1$^+$,0$^+$) was determined to be $1406 \pm 2 \pm 2$ keV, by measuring $\gamma$ rays for the $1^+ \to 0^+$ transition with a high efficiency germanium detector array in coincidence with the $^4$He$(K^-,\pi^-)$ $^4_\Lambda $He reaction at J-PARC. In comparison to the corresponding energy spacing in the mirror hypernucleus $^4_\Lambda $H, the present result clearly indicates the existence of charge symmetry breaking (CSB) in $\Lambda N$ interaction. It is also found that the CSB effect is large in the $0^+$ ground state but is by one order of magnitude smaller in the $1^+$ excited state, demonstrating that the $\Lambda N$ CSB interaction has spin dependence.

New Observations and Analysis of the Bright Semi-Detached Eclipsing Binary mu1 Sco

Using new and published photometric observations of mu1 Sco (HR 6247), spanning 70 years, a period of 1.4462700(5) days was determined. It was found that the epoch of primary minimum suggested by Shobbrook at HJD 2449534.178 requires an adjustment to HJD 2449534.17700(9) to align all the available photometric datasets. Using the resulting combined-data light-curve, radial velocities derived from IUE data and the modelling software PHOEBE, a new system solution for this binary was obtained. It appears that the secondary is close to, or just filling, its Roche-lobe.
