Primordial Black Hole Hotspots Beyond Flat Spacetime

Light primordial black holes heat the surrounding plasma via Hawking radiation, forming localized hotspots whose temperature may far exceed that of the cosmological background. Previous studies of hotspot formation and cooling have treated the subsequent energy transport in flat spacetime, thereby neglecting the expansion of the Universe. We formulate the diffusion equation governing the hotspot evolution, in an expanding universe, and clarify the regime in which the formalism is valid. We find that hotspot formation is robust against cosmological expansion. We show that the critical distance scale, where Hubble expansion overtakes diffusion, coincides with the decoupling radius introduced in earlier work, and the temperature profile $T\propto r^{-7/11}$ essentially remains unchanged. However, the cooling stage is substantially modified. We find that the plateau temperature of a cooling hotspot initially undergoes a rapid drop and then follows $T_{\rm plt} \propto t^{-11/15}$, steeper than the flat-spacetime scaling $t^{-7/15}$. This scaling cannot be obtained by simply redshifting the flat-spacetime solution, because expansion also suppresses diffusive transport. As a consequence, all hotspots disappear within a finite time, as opposed to the flat-spacetime prediction of everlasting hotspots in part of the parameter space.

Unified Gas Heating Constraints on Extended Dark Matter Compact Objects

We present the first unified constraints on a broad class of extended dark matter compact objects (EDCOs) from interstellar gas heating. These include axion stars, Q-balls, axion miniclusters, dark fermion stars and primordial black holes surrounded by dark matter halos, which arise in a wide range of theories beyond the Standard Model. As such massive objects traverse the interstellar medium, their gravitational influence generates wakes and, if sufficiently compact, drives accretion flows that heat gas in their vicinity. Our general framework extends standard dynamical friction treatments by incorporating finite-size effects, internal density profiles, gas penetration through objects, and criteria for accretion disk formation. We perform detailed numerical calculations of wake formation and gas heating and apply our results to the Leo T dwarf galaxy, establishing new constraints on the dark matter fraction in EDCOs heavier than a solar mass spanning several orders of magnitude in both mass and abundance.

Probing the axion-electron coupling at cavity experiments

Axion dark matter induces electromagnetic radiation in conductors through nearly perpetual oscillations of electrons, driven by axion-electron interactions through the so-called chiral magnetic effect. It therefore provides a complementary probe of the axion-electron coupling $g_{ae}$ beyond the conventional axion-photon coupling $g_{a \gamma}$ in cavities. We show that existing axion cavity experiments can constrain the coupling to $g_{ae}\lesssim 10^{-5}$ over the scanned axion mass ranges, $1\,\mu\, {\rm eV}\lesssim m_a\lesssim 20\,\mu\,{\rm eV}$. Although we find that the radiation due to $g_{ae}$ at the copper cavity surface of electric conductivity $\sigma$ is suppressed by $m_a^2/\sigma^2\sim 10^{-20}$, compared to the radiation inside the cavity by the axion-photon conversion due to $g_{a\gamma}$, a sensitivity of about $10^{-9}$ could be achieved for $g_{ae}$ over a wider range of $m_a$, including values higher than those previously probed, if copper walls are replaced with carbon-based conductors.

Planck isocurvature constraint on primordial black holes lighter than a kiloton

We demonstrate that primordial black holes (PBHs) lighter than $10^9 \, \text{g}$, which evaporated before the big bang nucleosynthesis, can induce significant isocurvature perturbations due to their biased clustering amplitude and the branching ratio of the Hawking radiation differing from the abundance ratio. By leveraging the upper bound on the isocurvature perturbations from the cosmic microwave background anisotropies reported by the Planck collaboration, we derive a new upper bound on the abundance of these light PBHs in the presence of primordial non-Gaussianity as a working example.

Q-Balls in the presence of attractive force

Q-balls are non-topological solitons in field theories whose stability is typically guaranteed by the existence of a global conserved charge. A classic realization is the Friedberg-Lee-Sirlin (FLS) Q-ball in a two-scalar system where a real scalar $\chi$ triggers symmetry breaking and confines a complex scalar $\Phi$ with a global $U(1)$ symmetry. A quartic interaction $\kappa \chi^2|\Phi|^2$ with $\kappa>0$ is usually considered to produce a nontrivial Q-ball configuration, and this repulsive force contributes to its stability. On the other hand, the attractive cubic interaction $\Lambda \chi |\Phi|^2$ is generally allowed in a renormalizable theory and could induce an instability. In this paper, we study the behavior of the Q-ball under the influence of this attractive force which has been overlooked. We find approximate Q-ball solutions in the limit of weak and moderate force couplings using the thin-wall and thick-wall approximations respectively. Our analytical results are consistent with numerical simulations and predict the parameter dependencies of the maximum charge. A crucial difference with the ordinary FLS Q-ball is the existence of the maximum charge beyond which the Q-ball solution is classically unstable. Such a limitation of the charge fundamentally affects Q-ball formation in the early Universe and could plausibly lead to the formation of primordial black holes.

Emergent particles of de Sitter: thermal interpretation of the stochastic formalism and beyond

A thermal interpretation of the stochastic formalism of a slow-rolling scalar field in de Sitter (dS) is given. We construct a correspondence between Hubble patches of dS and particles living in another space called an abstract space. By assuming a dual description of scalar fields and classical mechanics in the abstract space, we show that the stochastic evolution of the infrared part of the field is equivalent to the Brownian motion in the abstract space filled with a heat bath of massless particles. The 1st slow-roll condition and the Hubble expansion are also reinterpreted in the abstract space as the speed of light and a transfer of conserved energy, respectively. Inspired by this, we sketch quantum emergent particles, which may realize the Hubble expansion by an exponential particle production. This gives another meaning of dS entropy as entropy per Hubble volume.

Regurgitated Dark Matter

We present a new paradigm for the production of the dark matter (DM) relic abundance based on the evaporation of early Universe primordial black holes (PBHs) themselves formed from DM particles. As a concrete realization, we consider a minimal model of the dark sector in which a first-order phase transition results in the formation of Fermiball remnants that collapse to PBHs, which then emit DM particles. We show that the regurgitated DM scenario allows for DM in the mass range $\sim1$ GeV $- \,10^{16}$ GeV, thereby unlocking parameter space considered excluded.

PBH formation from overdensities in delayed vacuum transitions

Primordial black hole (PBH) formation from first-order phase transitions (FOPTs) combines two prevalent elements of beyond the Standard Model physics with wide-ranging consequences. We elaborate on a recently proposed scenario in which inhomogeneities in vacuum energy decay seed the overdensities that collapse to PBHs. In this scenario, the PBH mass is determined by the Hubble mass as in conventional formation scenarios, while its number density is determined by the nucleation dynamics of the FOPT. We present a detailed study of the formation probability including parameter dependencies. In addition, we generate populations in the open mass window as well as for the HSC and OGLE candidate microlensing events. This mechanism inevitably creates PBHs in generic FOPTs, with significant populations produced in slow and moderately strong phase transitions.

Hubble selection of the weak scale from QCD quantum critical point

There is growing evidence that the small weak scale may be related to self-organized criticality. In this regard, we note that if the strange quark were lighter, the QCD phase transition could have been first order, possibly exhibiting quantum critical points at zero temperature as a function of the Higgs vacuum expectation value $v_h$ smaller than (but near) the weak scale. We show that these quantum critical points allow a dynamical selection of the observed weak scale, via quantum-dominated stochastic evolutions of the value of $v_h$ during eternal inflation. Although the values of $v_h$ in different Hubble patches are described by a probability distribution in the multiverse, inflationary quantum dynamics ensures that the peak of the distribution evolves toward critical points (self-organized criticality), driven mainly by the largest Hubble expansion rate there -- the Hubble selection of the universe. To this end, we first explore the quantum critical points of the three-flavor QCD linear sigma model, parametrized by $v_h$ at zero temperature, and we present a relaxion model for the weak scale. Among the patches that have reached reheating, it results in a sharp probability distribution of $v_h$ near the observed weak scale, which is critical not to the crossover at $v_h=0$ but to the sharp transition at ${\sim}\Lambda_{\rm QCD}$.

Constraining the gravitational coupling of axion dark matter at LIGO

The axion-gravity Chern-Simons coupling is well motivated but is relatively weakly constrained, partly due to difficult measurements of gravity. We study the sensitivity of LIGO measurements of chirping gravitational waves (GWs) on such coupling. When the frequency of the propagating GW matches with that of the coherent oscillation of axion dark matter field, the decay of axions into gravitons can be stimulated, resonantly enhancing the GW. Such a resonance peak can be detected at LIGO as a deviation from the chirping waveform. Since all observed GWs will undergo similar resonant enhancement from the Milky-Way (MW) axion halo, LIGO O1+O2 observations can potentially provide the strongest constraint on the coupling, at least for the axion mass $m_a = 5 \times 10^{-13} - 5 \times 10^{-12}$ eV. Along the course, we also emphasize the relevance of the finite coherence of axion fields and the ansatz separating forward and backward propagations of GWs. As a result, the parity violation of the Chern-Simons coupling is not observable from chirping GWs.

GRB lensing parallax: Closing primordial black hole dark matter mass window

The primordial black hole (PBH) comprising full dark matter (DM) abundance is currently allowed if its mass lies between $10^{-16}M_{\odot} \lesssim M \lesssim 10^{-11} M_{\odot}$. This lightest mass range is hard to be probed by ongoing gravitational lensing observations. In this paper, we advocate that an old idea of the lensing parallax of Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), observed simultaneously by spatially separated detectors, can probe the unconstrained mass range; and that of nearby stars can probe a heavier mass range. In addition to various good properties of GRBs, astrophysical separations achievable around us --- $r_\oplus \text{--}$ AU --- is just large enough to resolve the GRB lensing by lightest PBH DM.

Probing Cosmic Strings with Gravitational-Wave Fringe

Cosmic strings are important remnants of early-Universe phase transitions. We show that they can be probed by Gravitational Waves (GWs) from compact binary mergers. If such chirping GW passes by a cosmic string, it is gravitationally lensed and left with a characteristic signal of the lensing -- the GW fringe. It is observable naturally through the frequency chirping of GWs. This allows to probe cosmic strings with small tension $\Delta = 8\pi G \mu = 10^{-6} \text{ -- } 10^{-10}$, just below the current constraint, at high-frequency LIGO-band and mid-band detectors. Although its detection rates are estimated to be small, even a single detection can be used to identify a cosmic string. Contrary to the stochastic GW produced from loop decays only in local $U(1)$ models, the GW fringe can directly probe straight strings model independently. This is also complementary to the existing probes with the strong lensing of light.

Geometrical Interpretation of Electromagnetism in a 5-Dimensional Manifold

In this paper, Kaluza-Klein theory is revisited and its implications are elaborated. We show that electromagnetic 4-potential can be considered as a shearing-like deformation of a 5-dimensional (5D) manifold along the fifth (5th) axis. The charge-to-mass ratio has a physical meaning of the ratio between the movement along the direction of the 5th axis and the movement in the 4D space-time. In order to have a 5D matter which is consistent with the construction of the 5D manifold, a notion of particle-thread is suggested. Examinations on the compatibility of reference frames reveal a covariance breaking of the 5th dimension. The field equations which extend Einstein's field equations give the total energy-momentum tensor as a sum of that of matter, electromagnetic field, and the interaction between electric current and electromagnetic potential. Finally, the experimental implications are calculated for the weak potential case.
