Overview to the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) Satellite

As China's first X-ray astronomical satellite, the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT), which was dubbed as Insight-HXMT after the launch on June 15, 2017, is a wide-band (1-250 keV) slat-collimator-based X-ray astronomy satellite with the capability of all-sky monitoring in 0.2-3 MeV. It was designed to perform pointing, scanning and gamma-ray burst (GRB) observations and, based on the Direct Demodulation Method (DDM), the image of the scanned sky region can be reconstructed. Here we give an overview of the mission and its progresses, including payload, core sciences, ground calibration/facility, ground segment, data archive, software, in-orbit performance, calibration, background model, observations and some preliminary results.

Studies on the time response distribution of Insigh}-HXMT/LE

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) named Insight is China's first X-ray astronomical satellite. The Low Energy X-ray Telescope (LE) is one of its main payloads onboard. The detectors of LE adopt swept charge device CCD236 with L-shaped transfer electrodes. Charges in detection area are read out continuously along specific paths, which leads to a time response distribution of photons readout time. We designed a long exposure readout mode to measure the time response distribution. In this mode, CCD236 firstly performs exposure without readout, then all charges generated in preceding exposure phase are read out completely. Through analysis of the photons readout time in this mode, we obtained the probability distribution of photons readout time.

The Medium Energy (ME) X-ray telescope onboard the Insight-HXMT astronomy satellite

The Medium Energy X-ray telescope (ME) is one of the three main telescopes on board the Insight Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) astronomy satellite. ME contains 1728 pixels of Si-PIN detectors sensitive in 5-30 keV with a total geometrical area of 952 cm2. Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) chips, VA32TA6, is used to achieve low power consumption and low readout noise. The collimators define three kinds of field of views (FOVs) for the telescope, 1°{\times}4°, 4°{\times}4°, and blocked ones. Combination of such FOVs can be used to estimate the in-orbit X-ray and particle background components. The energy resolution of ME is ~3 keV at 17.8 keV (FWHM) and the time resolution is 255 μs. In this paper, we introduce the design and performance of ME.

Gated Recurrent Units Learning for Optimal Deployment of Visible Light Communications Enabled UAVs

In this paper, the problem of optimizing the deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with visible light communication (VLC) capabilities is studied. In the studied model, the UAVs can simultaneously provide communications and illumination to service ground users. Ambient illumination increases the interference over VLC links while reducing the illumination threshold of the UAVs. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the illumination distribution of the target area for UAV deployment optimization. This problem is formulated as an optimization problem whose goal is to minimize the total transmit power while meeting the illumination and communication requirements of users. To solve this problem, an algorithm based on the machine learning framework of gated recurrent units (GRUs) is proposed. Using GRUs, the UAVs can model the long-term historical illumination distribution and predict the future illumination distribution. In order to reduce the complexity of the prediction algorithm while accurately predicting the illumination distribution, a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) is used to fit the illumination distribution of the target area at each time slot. Based on the predicted illumination distribution, the optimization problem is proved to be a convex optimization problem that can be solved by using duality. Simulations using real data from the Earth observations group (EOG) at NOAA/NCEI show that the proposed approach can achieve up to 22.1% reduction in transmit power compared to a conventional optimal UAV deployment that does not consider the illumination distribution. The results also show that UAVs must hover at areas having strong illumination, thus providing useful guidelines on the deployment of VLC-enabled UAVs.

Mathematical validation of the Peierls--Nabarro model for edge dislocations

In this paper, we perform mathematical validation of the Peierls--Nabarro (PN) models, which are multiscale models of dislocations that incorporate the detailed dislocation core structure. We focus on the static and dynamic PN models of an edge dislocation. In a PN model, the total energy includes the elastic energy in the two half-space continua and a nonlinear potential energy across the slip plane, which is always infinite. We rigorously establish the relationship between the PN model in the full space and the reduced problem on the slip plane in terms of both governing equations and energy variations. The shear displacement jump is determined only by the reduced problem on the slip plane while the displacement fields in the two half spaces are determined by linear elasticity. We establish the existence and sharp regularities of classical solutions in Hilbert space. For both the reduced problem and the full PN model, we prove that a static solution is a global minimizer in perturbed sense. We also show that there is a unique classical, global in time solution of the dynamic PN model.

Insight-HXMT observations of Swift J0243.6+6124 during its 2017-2018 outburst

The recently discovered neutron star transient Swift J0243.6+6124 has been monitored by {\it the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope} ({\it Insight-\rm HXMT). Based on the obtained data, we investigate the broadband spectrum of the source throughout the outburst. We estimate the broadband flux of the source and search for possible cyclotron line in the broadband spectrum. No evidence of line-like features is, however, found up to $\rm 150~keV$. In the absence of any cyclotron line in its energy spectrum, we estimate the magnetic field of the source based on the observed spin evolution of the neutron star by applying two accretion torque models. In both cases, we get consistent results with $B\rm \sim 10^{13}~G$, $D\rm \sim 6~kpc$ and peak luminosity of $\rm >10^{39}~erg~s^{-1}$ which makes the source the first Galactic ultraluminous X-ray source hosting a neutron star.

Explicitizing an Implicit Bias of the Frequency Principle in Two-layer Neural Networks

It remains a puzzle that why deep neural networks (DNNs), with more parameters than samples, often generalize well. An attempt of understanding this puzzle is to discover implicit biases underlying the training process of DNNs, such as the Frequency Principle (F-Principle), i.e., DNNs often fit target functions from low to high frequencies. Inspired by the F-Principle, we propose an effective model of linear F-Principle (LFP) dynamics which accurately predicts the learning results of two-layer ReLU neural networks (NNs) of large widths. This LFP dynamics is rationalized by a linearized mean field residual dynamics of NNs. Importantly, the long-time limit solution of this LFP dynamics is equivalent to the solution of a constrained optimization problem explicitly minimizing an FP-norm, in which higher frequencies of feasible solutions are more heavily penalized. Using this optimization formulation, an a priori estimate of the generalization error bound is provided, revealing that a higher FP-norm of the target function increases the generalization error. Overall, by explicitizing the implicit bias of the F-Principle as an explicit penalty for two-layer NNs, our work makes a step towards a quantitative understanding of the learning and generalization of general DNNs.

A study on the correlation between poles and cuts in $ππ$ scattering

In this paper we propose a dispersive method to describe two-body scattering with unitarity imposed. This approach is applied to elastic $ππ$ scattering. The amplitudes keep single-channel unitarity and describe the experimental data well, and the low-energy amplitudes are consistent with that of chiral perturbation theory. The pole locations of the $σ$, $f_0(980)$, $ρ(770)$ and $f_2(1270)$ and their couplings to $ππ$ are obtained. A virtual state appearing in the isospin-two S-wave is confirmed. The correlations between the left (and right) hand cut and the poles are discussed. Our results show that the poles are more sensitive to the right hand cut rather than the left hand cut. The proposed method could be used to study other two-body scattering processes.

The enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission - eXTP

In this paper we present the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission - eXTP. eXTP is a space science mission designed to study fundamental physics under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. The mission aims at determining the equation of state of matter at supra-nuclear density, measuring effects of QED, and understanding the dynamics of matter in strong-field gravity. In addition to investigating fundamental physics, eXTP will be a very powerful observatory for astrophysics that will provide observations of unprecedented quality on a variety of galactic and extragalactic objects. In particular, its wide field monitoring capabilities will be highly instrumental to detect the electro-magnetic counterparts of gravitational wave sources. The paper provides a detailed description of: (1) the technological and technical aspects, and the expected performance of the instruments of the scientific payload; (2) the elements and functions of the mission, from the spacecraft to the ground segment.

Semileptonic $B$ and $B_s$ decays involving scalar and axial-vector mesons

We report our theoretical calculations on the branching fractions for the semileptonic $B$ and $B_s$ decays, i.e., $B (B_s) \to (P,\, V,\, S,\,A) \ell ν_\ell$, where $P$ and $V$ denote the pseudoscalar and vector mesons, respectively, while $S$ denotes the scalar meson with mass above 1 GeV and $A$ the axial-vector meson. The branching fractions for the semileptonic $B\to P$ and $V$ modes have been measured very well in experiment and our theoretical values are in good agreement with them. The ones for $B\to S$ and $A$ modes are our theoretical predictions. There is little experimental information on the semileptonic $B_s$ decays although much theoretical effort has been done. In addition, we predict the branching fractions of $B\to D^*_0(2400) \ell \barν_\ell$ and $B_s\to D^{*-}_{s0}(2317) \ell \barν_\ell$ as $(2.31\pm 0.25)\times 10^{-3}$ and $(3.07\pm0.34)\times 10^{-3}$, in order, assuming them as the conventional mesons with quark-antiquark configuration. The high luminosity $e^+e^-$ collider SuperKEKB/Belle-II is running, with the data sample enhanced by a factor of 40 compared to Belle, which will provide huge opportunity for the test of the theoretical predictions and further help understand the inner structure of these scalar and axial vector mesons, e.g., the glueball content of $f_0(1710)$ and the mixing angles for the axial-vector mesons. These decay channels can also be accessed by the LHCb experiment.

The Large Area Detector onboard the eXTP mission

The eXTP (enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry) mission is a major project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and China National Space Administration (CNSA) currently performing an extended phase A study and proposed for a launch by 2025 in a low-earth orbit. The eXTP scientific payload envisages a suite of instruments (Spectroscopy Focusing Array, Polarimetry Focusing Array, Large Area Detector and Wide Field Monitor) offering unprecedented simultaneous wide-band X-ray spectral, timing and polarimetry sensitivity. A large European consortium is contributing to the eXTP study and it is expected to provide key hardware elements, including a Large Area Detector (LAD). The LAD instrument for eXTP is based on the design originally proposed for the LOFT mission within the ESA context. The eXTP/LAD envisages a deployed 3.4 m2 effective area in the 2-30 keV energy range, achieved through the technology of the large-area Silicon Drift Detectors - offering a spectral resolution of up to 200 eV FWHM at 6 keV - and of capillary plate collimators - limiting the field of view to about 1 degree. In this paper we provide an overview of the LAD instrument design, including new elements with respect to the earlier LOFT configuration.

Insight-HXMT observations of the first binary neutron star merger GW170817

Finding the electromagnetic (EM) counterpart of binary compact star merger, especially the binary neutron star (BNS) merger, is critically important for gravitational wave (GW) astronomy, cosmology and fundamental physics. On Aug. 17, 2017, Advanced LIGO and \textit{Fermi}/GBM independently triggered the first BNS merger, GW170817, and its high energy EM counterpart, GRB 170817A, respectively, resulting in a global observation campaign covering gamma-ray, X-ray, UV, optical, IR, radio as well as neutrinos. The High Energy X-ray telescope (HE) onboard \textit{Insight}-HXMT (Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope) is the unique high-energy gamma-ray telescope that monitored the entire GW localization area and especially the optical counterpart (SSS17a/AT2017gfo) with very large collection area ($\sim$1000 cm$^2$) and microsecond time resolution in 0.2-5 MeV. In addition, \textit{Insight}-HXMT quickly implemented a Target of Opportunity (ToO) observation to scan the GW localization area for potential X-ray emission from the GW source. Although it did not detect any significant high energy (0.2-5 MeV) radiation from GW170817, its observation helped to confirm the unexpected weak and soft nature of GRB 170817A. Meanwhile, \textit{Insight}-HXMT/HE provides one of the most stringent constraints (~10$^{-7}$ to 10$^{-6}$ erg/cm$^2$/s) for both GRB170817A and any other possible precursor or extended emissions in 0.2-5 MeV, which help us to better understand the properties of EM radiation from this BNS merger. Therefore the observation of \textit{Insight}-HXMT constitutes an important chapter in the full context of multi-wavelength and multi-messenger observation of this historical GW event.

On the Free Surface Motion of Highly Subsonic Heat-conducting Inviscid Flows

For a free surface problem of a highly subsonic heat-conducting inviscid flow, motivated by a geometric approach developed by Christodoulou and Lindblad in the study of the free surface problem of incompressible inviscid flows, the a priori estimates of Sobolev norms in 2-D and 3-D are proved under the Taylor sign condition by identifying a suitable higher order energy functional. The estimates for some geometric quantities such as the second fundamental form and the injectivity radius of the normal exponential map of the free surface are also given. The novelty in our analysis includes dealing with the strong coupling of large variation of temperature, heat-conduction, compressibility of fluids and the evolution of free surface, loss of symmetries of equations, and loss of derivatives in closing the argument which is a key feature compared with Christodoulou and Lindblad's work. The motivation of this paper is to contribute to the program of understanding the role played by the heat-conductivity to free surface motions of inviscid compressible flows and the behavior of such motions when the Mach number is small.

From atomistic model to the Peierls-Nabarro model with $γ$-surface for dislocations

The Peierls-Nabarro (PN) model for dislocations is a hybrid model that incorporates the atomistic information of the dislocation core structure into the continuum theory. In this paper, we study the convergence from a full atomistic model to the PN model with $γ$-surface for the dislocation in a bilayer system (e.g. bilayer graphene). We prove that the displacement field of and the total energy of the dislocation solution of the PN model are asymptotically close to those of the full atomistic model. Our work can be considered as a generalization of the analysis of the convergence from atomistic model to Cauchy-Born rule for crystals without defects in the literature.

Dislocation climb models from atomistic scheme to dislocation dynamics

We develop a mesoscopic dislocation dynamics model for vacancy-assisted dislocation climb by upscalings from a stochastic model on the atomistic scale. Our models incorporate microscopic mechanisms of (i) bulk diffusion of vacancies, (ii) vacancy exchange dynamics between bulk and dislocation core, (iii) vacancy pipe diffusion along the dislocation core, and (iv) vacancy attachment-detachment kinetics at jogs leading to the motion of jogs. Our mesoscopic model consists of the vacancy bulk diffusion equation and a dislocation climb velocity formula. The effects of pipe diffusion and the jog structure on dislocations are incorporated by a Robin boundary condition near the dislocations for the bulk diffusion equation and a new contribution in the dislocation climb velocity due to vacancy pipe diffusion driven by the stress variation along the dislocation. Our climb formulation is able to quantitatively describe the translation of prismatic loops at low temperatures when the bulk diffusion is negligible. Using this new formulation, we derive analytical formulas for the climb velocity of a straight edge dislocation and a prismatic circular loop. Our dislocation climb formulation can be implemented in dislocation dynamics simulations to incorporate all the above four microscopic mechanisms of dislocation climb.

Systematic theoretical analysis of dual-parameters RF readout by a novel LC-type passive sensor

This paper systematically studied the simultaneous measurement of two parameters by a LC-type passive sensor from the theoretical perspective. Based on the lumped circuit model of the typical LC-type passive dual-parameter sensor system, the influencing factors of the signal strength of the sensor as well as the influencing factors of signal crosstalk were both analyzed. It is found that the influencing factors of the RF readout signal strength of the sensor are mainly quality factors (Q factors) of the LC tanks, coupling coefficients, and the resonant frequency interval of the two LC tanks. And the influencing factors of the signal crosstalk are mainly coupling coefficient between the sensor inductance coils and the resonant frequency interval of the two LC tanks. The specific influence behavior of corresponding influencing factors on the signal strength and crosstalk is illustrated by a series of curves from numerical results simulated by using MATLAB software. Additionally, a decoupling scheme for solving the crosstalk problem algorithmically was proposed and a corresponding function was derived out. Overall, the theoretical analysis conducted in this work can provide design guidelines for making the dual-parameter LC-type passive sensor useful in practical applications.

On Nonlinear Asymptotic Stability of the Lane-Emden Solutions for the Viscous Gaseous Star Problem

This paper proves the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the Lane-Emden solutions for spherically symmetric motions of viscous gaseous stars if the adiabatic constant $γ$ lies in the stability range $(4/3, 2)$. It is shown that for small perturbations of a Lane-Emden solution with same mass, there exists a unique global (in time) strong solution to the vacuum free boundary problem of the compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson system with spherical symmetry for viscous stars, and the solution captures the precise physical behavior that the sound speed is $C^{{1}/{2}}$-H$\ddot{\rm o}$lder continuous across the vacuum boundary provided that $γ$ lies in $(4/3, 2)$. The key is to establish the global-in-time regularity uniformly up to the vacuum boundary, which ensures the large time asymptotic uniform convergence of the evolving vacuum boundary, density and velocity to those of the Lane-Emden solution with detailed convergence rates, and detailed large time behaviors of solutions near the vacuum boundary.
