CL-DiffPhyCon: Closed-loop Diffusion Control of Complex Physical Systems

The control problems of complex physical systems have broad applications in science and engineering. Previous studies have shown that generative control methods based on diffusion models offer significant advantages for solving these problems. However, existing generative control approaches face challenges in both performance and efficiency when extended to the closed-loop setting, which is essential for effective control. In this paper, we propose an efficient Closed-Loop Diffusion method for Physical systems Control (CL-DiffPhyCon). By employing an asynchronous denoising framework for different physical time steps, CL-DiffPhyCon generates control signals conditioned on real-time feedback from the system with significantly reduced computational cost during sampling. Additionally, the control process could be further accelerated by incorporating fast sampling techniques, such as DDIM. We evaluate CL-DiffPhyCon on two tasks: 1D Burgers' equation control and 2D incompressible fluid control. The results demonstrate that CL-DiffPhyCon achieves superior control performance with significant improvements in sampling efficiency. The code can be found at https://github.com/AI4Science-WestlakeU/CL_DiffPhyCon.

THESAURUS: Contrastive Graph Clustering by Swapping Fused Gromov-Wasserstein Couplings

Graph node clustering is a fundamental unsupervised task. Existing methods typically train an encoder through selfsupervised learning and then apply K-means to the encoder output. Some methods use this clustering result directly as the final assignment, while others initialize centroids based on this initial clustering and then finetune both the encoder and these learnable centroids. However, due to their reliance on K-means, these methods inherit its drawbacks when the cluster separability of encoder output is low, facing challenges from the Uniform Effect and Cluster Assimilation. We summarize three reasons for the low cluster separability in existing methods: (1) lack of contextual information prevents discrimination between similar nodes from different clusters; (2) training tasks are not sufficiently aligned with the downstream clustering task; (3) the cluster information in the graph structure is not appropriately exploited. To address these issues, we propose conTrastive grapH clustEring by SwApping fUsed gRomov-wasserstein coUplingS (THESAURUS). Our method introduces semantic prototypes to provide contextual information, and employs a cross-view assignment prediction pretext task that aligns well with the downstream clustering task. Additionally, it utilizes Gromov-Wasserstein Optimal Transport (GW-OT) along with the proposed prototype graph to thoroughly exploit cluster information in the graph structure. To adapt to diverse real-world data, THESAURUS updates the prototype graph and the prototype marginal distribution in OT by using momentum. Extensive experiments demonstrate that THESAURUS achieves higher cluster separability than the prior art, effectively mitigating the Uniform Effect and Cluster Assimilation issues

Optical Convolutional Spectrometer

Optical spectrometers are fundamental across numerous disciplines in science and technology. However, miniaturized versions, while essential for in situ measurements, are often restricted to coarse identification of signature peaks and inadequate for metrological purposes. Here, we introduce a new class of spectrometer, leveraging the convolution theorem as its mathematical foundation. Our convolutional spectrometer offers unmatched performance for miniaturized systems and distinct structural and computational simplicity, featuring a centimeter-scale footprint for the fully packaged unit, low cost (~$10) and a 2400 cm-1 (approximately 500 nm) bandwidth. We achieve excellent precision in resolving complex spectra with sub-second sampling and processing time, demonstrating a wide range of applications from industrial and agricultural analysis to healthcare monitoring. Specifically, our spectrometer system classifies diverse solid samples, including plastics, pharmaceuticals, coffee, flour and tea, with 100% success rate, and quantifies concentrations of aqueous and organic solutions with detection accuracy surpassing commercial benchtop spectrometers. We also realize the non-invasive sensing of human biomarkers, such as skin moisture (mean absolute error; MAE = 2.49%), blood alcohol (1.70 mg/dL), blood lactate (0.81 mmol/L), and blood glucose (0.36 mmol/L), highlighting the potential of this new class of spectrometers for low-cost, high-precision, portable/wearable spectral metrology.

CO2 adsorption mechanisms in hydrated silica nanopores: Insights from grand canonical Monte Carlo to classical and ab initio molecular dynamics

Understanding interfacial phenomena in confined systems is important for optimizing CO2 capture technologies. Here, we present a comprehensive investigation of CO2 adsorption in hydrated amorphous silica nanopores through an integrated computational approach combining grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC), classical molecular dynamics (MD), and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. The excess adsorption isotherms reveal a marked hydration dependence, with CO2 uptake decreasing from 7.6 to 2.6 mmol/g as water content increases from 1 to 15 wt%. Analysis of adsorption kinetics demonstrates a distinctive bimodal process, characterized by rapid initial uptake followed by slower diffusion-limited adsorption, with the latter becoming increasingly dominant at higher hydration levels. Classical MD simulations reveal an inverse correlation between hydration and CO2 mobility, with self-diffusion coefficients decreasing across the studied hydration range. Density profile analysis indicates a hydration-induced transition in CO2 distribution from central pore regions to surface-proximate domains, accompanied by restructuring of interfacial water networks. Notably, AIMD simulations capture previously unrecognized chemical processes, including proton transfer mechanisms leading to surface silanol formation with characteristic O-O distances of 2.4-2.5 Å, and spontaneous CO2 hydration yielding carbonate species through water-mediated reaction pathways. These findings demonstrate the dual role of confined water as both a spatial competitor and reaction medium for CO2 capture, providing molecular-level insights with quantum mechanical accuracy for design of carbon capture materials.

Position reconstruction and surface background model for the PandaX-4T detector

We report the position reconstruction methods and surface background model for the PandaX-4T dark matter direct search experiment. This work develops two position reconstruction algorithms: template matching (TM) method and photon acceptance function (PAF) method. Both methods determine the horizontal position of events based on the light pattern of secondary scintillation collected by the light sensors. After a comprehensive evaluation of resolution, uniformity, and robustness, the PAF method was selected for position reconstruction, while the TM method was employed for verification. The PAF method achieves a bulk event resolution of 1.0 mm and a surface event resolution of 4.4 mm for a typical $S2$ signal with a bottom charge of 1500 PE (about 14 keV). The uniformity is around 20\%. Robustness studies reveal average deviations of 5.1 mm and 8.8 mm for the commissioning run (Run0) and the first science run (Run1), respectively, due to the deactivation of certain PMTs. A data-driven surface background model is developed based on the PAF method. The surface background is estimated to be $0.09 \pm 0.06$ events for Run0 (0.54 tonne$\cdot$year) and $0.17 \pm 0.11$ events for Run1 (1.00 tonne$\cdot$year).

A Novel Low-Background Photomultiplier Tube Developed for Xenon Based Detectors

Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are essential in xenon detectors like PandaX, LZ, and XENON experiments for dark matter searches and neutrino properties measurement. To minimize PMT-induced backgrounds, stringent requirements on PMT radioactivity are crucial. A novel 2-inch low-background R12699 PMT has been developed through a collaboration between the PandaX team and Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. corporation. Radioactivity measurements conducted with a high-purity germanium detector show levels of approximately 0.08 mBq/PMT for $\rm^{60}Co$ and 0.06~mBq/PMT for the $\rm^{238}U$ late chain, achieving a 15-fold reduction compared to R11410 PMT used in PandaX-4T. The radon emanation rate is below 3.2 $\rm μ$Bq/PMT (@90\% confidence level), while the surface $\rm^{210}Po$ activity is less than 18.4 $μ$Bq/cm$^2$. The electrical performance of these PMTs at cryogenic temperature was evaluated. With an optimized readout base, the gain was enhanced by 30\%, achieving an average gain of $4.23 \times 10^6$ at -1000~V and -100~$^{\circ}$C. The dark count rate averaged 2.5~Hz per channel. Compactness, low radioactivity, and robust electrical performance in the cryogenic temperature make the R12699 PMT ideal for next-generation liquid xenon detectors and other rare event searches.

Dark Matter Search Results from 1.54 Tonne$\cdot$Year Exposure of PandaX-4T

In this letter, we report the dark matter search results from the commissioning run and the first science run of the PandaX-4T experiment. A blind analysis is carried out on the entire data set. The data processing is improved compared to previous work, unifying the low-level signal reconstruction in a wide energy range up to 120 keV. With a total exposure of 1.54 tonne$\cdot$year, no significant excess of nuclear recoil events is found. The lowest 90% confidence level exclusion on the spin-independent cross section is $1.6 \times 10^{-47}\,\mathrm{cm}^2$ at a dark matter mass of 40 GeV$/c^2$. Our results represent the most stringent constraint for a dark matter mass above 100 GeV$/c^2$.

Efficient and Trustworthy Block Propagation for Blockchain-enabled Mobile Embodied AI Networks: A Graph Resfusion Approach

By synergistically integrating mobile networks and embodied artificial intelligence (AI), Mobile Embodied AI Networks (MEANETs) represent an advanced paradigm that facilitates autonomous, context-aware, and interactive behaviors within dynamic environments. Nevertheless, the rapid development of MEANETs is accompanied by challenges in trustworthiness and operational efficiency. Fortunately, blockchain technology, with its decentralized and immutable characteristics, offers promising solutions for MEANETs. However, existing block propagation mechanisms suffer from challenges such as low propagation efficiency and weak security for block propagation, which results in delayed transmission of vehicular messages or vulnerability to malicious tampering, potentially causing severe traffic accidents in blockchain-enabled MEANETs. Moreover, current block propagation strategies cannot effectively adapt to real-time changes of dynamic topology in MEANETs. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a graph Resfusion model-based trustworthy block propagation optimization framework for consortium blockchain-enabled MEANETs. Specifically, we propose an innovative trust calculation mechanism based on the trust cloud model, which comprehensively accounts for randomness and fuzziness in the miner trust evaluation. Furthermore, by leveraging the strengths of graph neural networks and diffusion models, we develop a graph Resfusion model to effectively and adaptively generate the optimal block propagation trajectory. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms other routing mechanisms in terms of block propagation efficiency and trustworthiness. Additionally, the results highlight its strong adaptability to dynamic environments, making it particularly suitable for rapidly changing MEANETs.

Generative AI-driven Cross-layer Covert Communication: Fundamentals, Framework and Case Study

Ensuring end-to-end cross-layer communication security in military networks by selecting covert schemes between nodes is a key solution for military communication security. With the development of communication technology, covert communication has expanded from the physical layer to the network and application layers, utilizing methods such as artificial noise, private networks, and semantic coding to transmit secret messages. However, as adversaries continuously eavesdrop on specific communication channels, the accumulation of sufficient data may reveal underlying patterns that influence concealment, and establishing a cross-layer covert communication mechanism emerges as an effective strategy to mitigate these regulatory challenges. In this article, we first survey the communication security solution based on covert communication, specifically targeting three typical scenarios: device-to-device, private network communication, and public network communication, and analyze their application scopes. Furthermore, we propose an end-to-end cross-layer covert communication scheme driven by Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), highlighting challenges and their solutions. Additionally, a case study is conducted using diffusion reinforcement learning to sovle cloud edge internet of things cross-layer secure communication.

Achieving Network Resilience through Graph Neural Network-enabled Deep Reinforcement Learning

Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has been widely used in many important tasks of communication networks. In order to improve the perception ability of DRL on the network, some studies have combined graph neural networks (GNNs) with DRL, which use the GNNs to extract unstructured features of the network. However, as networks continue to evolve and become increasingly complex, existing GNN-DRL methods still face challenges in terms of scalability and robustness. Moreover, these methods are inadequate for addressing network security issues. From the perspective of security and robustness, this paper explores the solution of combining GNNs with DRL to build a resilient network. This article starts with a brief tutorial of GNNs and DRL, and introduces their existing applications in networks. Furthermore, we introduce the network security methods that can be strengthened by GNN-DRL approaches. Then, we designed a framework based on GNN-DRL to defend against attacks and enhance network resilience. Additionally, we conduct a case study using an encrypted traffic dataset collected from real IoT environments, and the results demonstrated the effectiveness and superiority of our framework. Finally, we highlight key open challenges and opportunities for enhancing network resilience with GNN-DRL.

Zeroth-Order Actor-Critic: An Evolutionary Framework for Sequential Decision Problems

Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) have shown promise in solving sequential decision problems (SDPs) by simplifying them to static optimization problems and searching for the optimal policy parameters in a zeroth-order way. While these methods are highly versatile, they often suffer from high sample complexity due to their ignorance of the underlying temporal structures. In contrast, reinforcement learning (RL) methods typically formulate SDPs as Markov Decision Process (MDP). Although more sample efficient than EAs, RL methods are restricted to differentiable policies and prone to getting stuck in local optima. To address these issues, we propose a novel evolutionary framework Zeroth-Order Actor-Critic (ZOAC). We propose to use step-wise exploration in parameter space and theoretically derive the zeroth-order policy gradient. We further utilize the actor-critic architecture to effectively leverage the Markov property of SDPs and reduce the variance of gradient estimators. In each iteration, ZOAC employs samplers to collect trajectories with parameter space exploration, and alternates between first-order policy evaluation (PEV) and zeroth-order policy improvement (PIM). To evaluate the effectiveness of ZOAC, we apply it to a challenging multi-lane driving task, optimizing the parameters in a rule-based, non-differentiable driving policy that consists of three sub-modules: behavior selection, path planning, and trajectory tracking. We also compare it with gradient-based RL methods on three Gymnasium tasks, optimizing neural network policies with thousands of parameters. Experimental results demonstrate the strong capability of ZOAC in solving SDPs. ZOAC significantly outperforms EAs that treat the problem as static optimization and matches the performance of gradient-based RL methods even without first-order information, in terms of total average return across all tasks.

Defending Against Network Attacks for Secure AI Agent Migration in Vehicular Metaverses

Vehicular metaverses, blending traditional vehicular networks with metaverse technology, are expected to revolutionize fields such as autonomous driving. As virtual intelligent assistants in vehicular metaverses, Artificial Intelligence (AI) agents powered by large language models can create immersive 3D virtual spaces for passengers to enjoy on-broad vehicular applications and services. To provide users with seamless and engaging virtual interactions, resource-limited vehicles offload AI agents to RoadSide Units (RSUs) with adequate communication and computational capabilities. Due to the mobility of vehicles and the limited coverage of RSUs, AI agents need to migrate from one RSU to another RSU. However, potential network attacks pose significant challenges to ensuring reliable and efficient AI agent migration. In this paper, we first explore specific network attacks including traffic-based attacks (i.e., DDoS attacks) and infrastructure-based attacks (i.e., malicious RSU attacks). Then, we model the AI agent migration process as a Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) and apply multi-agent proximal policy optimization algorithms to mitigate DDoS attacks. In addition, we propose a trust assessment mechanism to counter malicious RSU attacks. Numerical results validate that the proposed solutions effectively defend against these network attacks and reduce the total latency of AI agent migration by approximately 43.3%.

Deep Smart Contract Intent Detection

In recent years, research in software security has concentrated on identifying vulnerabilities in smart contracts to prevent significant losses of crypto assets on blockchains. Despite early successes in this area, detecting developers' intents in smart contracts has become a more pressing issue, as malicious intents have caused substantial financial losses. Unfortunately, existing research lacks effective methods for detecting development intents in smart contracts. To address this gap, we propose \textsc{SmartIntentNN} (Smart Contract Intent Neural Network), a deep learning model designed to automatically detect development intents in smart contracts. \textsc{SmartIntentNN} leverages a pre-trained sentence encoder to generate contextual representations of smart contracts, employs a K-means clustering model to identify and highlight prominent intent features, and utilizes a bidirectional LSTM-based deep neural network for multi-label classification. We trained and evaluated \textsc{SmartIntentNN} on a dataset containing over 40,000 real-world smart contracts, employing self-comparison baselines in our experimental setup. The results show that \textsc{SmartIntentNN} achieves an F1-score of 0.8633 in identifying intents across 10 distinct categories, outperforming all baselines and addressing the gap in smart contract detection by incorporating intent analysis.
