Determination of responses of liquid xenon to low energy electron and nuclear recoils using the PandaX-II detector

We report a systematic determination of the responses of PandaX-II, a dual phase xenon time projection chamber detector, to low energy recoils. The electron recoil (ER) and nuclear recoil (NR) responses are calibrated, respectively, with injected tritiated methane or $^{220}$Rn source, and with $^{241}$Am-Be neutron source, within an energy range from $1-25$ keV (ER) and $4-80$ keV (NR), under the two drift fields of 400 and 317 V/cm. An empirical model is used to fit the light yield and charge yield for both types of recoils. The best fit models can well describe the calibration data. The systematic uncertainties of the fitted models are obtained via statistical comparison against the data.

Generative Partial Visual-Tactile Fused Object Clustering

Visual-tactile fused sensing for object clustering has achieved significant progresses recently, since the involvement of tactile modality can effectively improve clustering performance. However, the missing data (i.e., partial data) issues always happen due to occlusion and noises during the data collecting process. This issue is not well solved by most existing partial multi-view clustering methods for the heterogeneous modality challenge. Naively employing these methods would inevitably induce a negative effect and further hurt the performance. To solve the mentioned challenges, we propose a Generative Partial Visual-Tactile Fused (i.e., GPVTF) framework for object clustering. More specifically, we first do partial visual and tactile features extraction from the partial visual and tactile data, respectively, and encode the extracted features in modality-specific feature subspaces. A conditional cross-modal clustering generative adversarial network is then developed to synthesize one modality conditioning on the other modality, which can compensate missing samples and align the visual and tactile modalities naturally by adversarial learning. To the end, two pseudo-label based KL-divergence losses are employed to update the corresponding modality-specific encoders. Extensive comparative experiments on three public visual-tactile datasets prove the effectiveness of our method.

On the Equilibrium Elicitation of Markov Games Through Information Design

This work considers a novel information design problem and studies how the craft of payoff-relevant environmental signals solely can influence the behaviors of intelligent agents. The agents' strategic interactions are captured by an incomplete-information Markov game, in which each agent first selects one environmental signal from multiple signal sources as additional payoff-relevant information and then takes an action. There is a rational information designer (designer) who possesses one signal source and aims to control the equilibrium behaviors of the agents by designing the information structure of her signals sent to the agents. An obedient principle is established which states that it is without loss of generality to focus on the direct information design when the information design incentivizes each agent to select the signal sent by the designer, such that the design process avoids the predictions of the agents' strategic selection behaviors. We then introduce the design protocol given a goal of the designer referred to as obedient implementability (OIL) and characterize the OIL in a class of obedient perfect Bayesian Markov Nash equilibria (O-PBME). A new framework for information design is proposed based on an approach of maximizing the optimal slack variables. Finally, we formulate the designer's goal selection problem and characterize it in terms of information design by establishing a relationship between the O-PBME and the Bayesian Markov correlated equilibria, in which we build upon the revelation principle in classic information design in economics. The proposed approach can be applied to elicit desired behaviors of multi-agent systems in competing as well as cooperating settings and be extended to heterogeneous stochastic games in the complete- and the incomplete-information environments.

Deep Reinforcement Learning for Combinatorial Optimization: Covering Salesman Problems

This paper introduces a new deep learning approach to approximately solve the Covering Salesman Problem (CSP). In this approach, given the city locations of a CSP as input, a deep neural network model is designed to directly output the solution. It is trained using the deep reinforcement learning without supervision. Specifically, in the model, we apply the Multi-head Attention to capture the structural patterns, and design a dynamic embedding to handle the dynamic patterns of the problem. Once the model is trained, it can generalize to various types of CSP tasks (different sizes and topologies) with no need of re-training. Through controlled experiments, the proposed approach shows desirable time complexity: it runs more than 20 times faster than the traditional heuristic solvers with a tiny gap of optimality. Moreover, it significantly outperforms the current state-of-the-art deep learning approaches for combinatorial optimization in the aspect of both training and inference. In comparison with traditional solvers, this approach is highly desirable for most of the challenging tasks in practice that are usually large-scale and require quick decisions.

Improving the Certified Robustness of Neural Networks via Consistency Regularization

A range of defense methods have been proposed to improve the robustness of neural networks on adversarial examples, among which provable defense methods have been demonstrated to be effective to train neural networks that are certifiably robust to the attacker. However, most of these provable defense methods treat all examples equally during training process, which ignore the inconsistent constraint of certified robustness between correctly classified (natural) and misclassified examples. In this paper, we explore this inconsistency caused by misclassified examples and add a novel consistency regularization term to make better use of the misclassified examples. Specifically, we identified that the certified robustness of network can be significantly improved if the constraint of certified robustness on misclassified examples and correctly classified examples is consistent. Motivated by this discovery, we design a new defense regularization term called Misclassification Aware Adversarial Regularization (MAAR), which constrains the output probability distributions of all examples in the certified region of the misclassified example. Experimental results show that our proposed MAAR achieves the best certified robustness and comparable accuracy on CIFAR-10 and MNIST datasets in comparison with several state-of-the-art methods.

Correlated Data in Differential Privacy: Definition and Analysis

Differential privacy is a rigorous mathematical framework for evaluating and protecting data privacy. In most existing studies, there is a vulnerable assumption that records in a dataset are independent when differential privacy is applied. However, in real-world datasets, records are likely to be correlated, which may lead to unexpected data leakage. In this survey, we investigate the issue of privacy loss due to data correlation under differential privacy models. Roughly, we classify existing literature into three lines: 1) using parameters to describe data correlation in differential privacy, 2) using models to describe data correlation in differential privacy, and 3) describing data correlation based on the framework of Pufferfish. Firstly, a detailed example is given to illustrate the issue of privacy leakage on correlated data in real scenes. Then our main work is to analyze and compare these methods, and evaluate situations that these diverse studies are applied. Finally, we propose some future challenges on correlated differential privacy.

Internal Calibration of the PandaX-II Detector with Radon Gaseous Sources

We have developed a low-energy electron recoil (ER) calibration method with $^{220}$Rn for the PandaX-II detector. $^{220}$Rn, emanated from natural thorium compounds, was fed into the detector through the xenon purification system. From 2017 to 2019, we performed three dedicated calibration campaigns with different radon sources. We studied the detector response to $α$, $β$, and $γ$ particles with focus on low energy ER events. During the runs in 2017 and 2018, the amount of radioactivity of $^{222}$Rn were on the order of 1\% of that of $^{220}$Rn and thorium particulate contamination was negligible, especially in 2018. We also measured the background contribution from $^{214}$Pb for the first time in PandaX-II with the help from a $^{222}$Rn injection. Calibration strategy with $^{220}$Rn and $^{222}$Rn will be implemented in the upcoming PandaX-4T experiment and can be useful for other xenon-based detectors as well.

An Analysis of Scatter Characteristics in X-ray CT Spectral Correction

X-ray scatter remains a major physics challenge in volumetric computed tomography (CT), whose physical and statistical behaviors have been commonly leveraged in order to eliminate its impact on CT image quality. In this work, we conduct an in-depth derivation of how the scatter distribution and scatter to primary ratio (SPR) will change during the spectral correction, leading to an interesting finding on the property of scatter: when applying the spectral correction before scatter is removed, the impact of SPR on a CT projection will be scaled by the first derivative of the mapping function; while the scatter distribution in the transmission domain will be scaled by the product of the first derivative of the mapping function and a natural exponential of the projection difference before and after the mapping. Such a characterization of scatter's behavior provides an analytic approach of compensating for the SPR as well as approximating the change of scatter distribution after spectral correction, even though both of them might be significantly distorted as the linearization mapping function in spectral correction could vary a lot from one detector pixel to another. We conduct an evaluation of SPR compensations on a Catphan phantom and an anthropomorphic chest phantom to validate the characteristics of scatter. In addition, this scatter property is also directly adopted into CT imaging using a spectral modulator with flying focal spot technology (SMFFS) as an example to demonstrate its potential in practical applications.

Forecasting fuel combustion-related CO$_2$ emissions by a novel continuous fractional nonlinear grey Bernoulli model with Grey Wolf Optimizer

Foresight of CO$_2$ emissions from fuel combustion is essential for policy-makers to identify ready targets for effective reduction plans and further to improve energy policies and plans. For the purpose of accurately forecasting the future development of China's CO$_2$ emissions from fuel combustion, a novel continuous fractional nonlinear grey Bernoulli model is developed in this paper. The fractional nonlinear grey Bernoulli model already in place is known that has a fixed first-order derivative that impairs the predictive performance to some extent. To address this problem, in the newly proposed model, a flexible variable is introduced into the order of derivative, freeing it from integer-order accumulation. In order to further improve the performance of the newly proposed model, a meta-heuristic algorithm, namely Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), is determined to the emerging coefficients. To demonstrate the effectiveness, two real examples and China's fuel combustion-related CO$_2$ emissions are used for model validation by comparing with other benchmark models, the results show the proposed model outperforms competitors. Thus, the future development trend of fuel combustion-related CO$_2$ emissions by 2023 are predicted, accounting for 10039.80 Million tons (Mt). In accordance with the forecasts, several suggestions are provided to curb carbon dioxide emissions.

MZET: Memory Augmented Zero-Shot Fine-grained Named Entity Typing

Named entity typing (NET) is a classification task of assigning an entity mention in the context with given semantic types. However, with the growing size and granularity of the entity types, rare researches in previous concern with newly emerged entity types. In this paper, we propose MZET, a novel memory augmented FNET (Fine-grained NET) model, to tackle the unseen types in a zero-shot manner. MZET incorporates character-level, word-level, and contextural-level information to learn the entity mention representation. Besides, MZET considers the semantic meaning and the hierarchical structure into the entity type representation. Finally, through the memory component which models the relationship between the entity mention and the entity type, MZET transfer the knowledge from seen entity types to the zero-shot ones. Extensive experiments on three public datasets show prominent performance obtained by MZET, which surpasses the state-of-the-art FNET neural network models with up to 7% gain in Micro-F1 and Macro-F1 score.

Constraints on Hořava-Lifshitz gravity from GRB 170817A

In this work we focus on a toy model: (3+1)-dimensional Hořava-Lifshitz gravity coupling with an anisotropic electromagnetic (EM) field which is generated through a Kaluza-Klein reduction of a (4+1)-dimensional Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. This model exhibits a remarkable feature that it has the same velocity for both gravitational and electromagnetic waves. This feature makes it possible to restrict the parameters of the theory from GRB 170817A. In this work we use this feature to discuss possible constraints on the parameter $β$ in the theory, by analyzing the possible Lorentz invariance violation effect of the GRB 170817A. This is achieved by analyzing potential time delay of gamma-ray photons in this event. It turns out that it places a stringent constraint on this parameter. In the most ideal case, it gives $|1-\sqrtβ|<(10^{-19}-10^{-18})$.

On Front-end Gain Invariant Modeling for Wake Word Spotting

Wake word (WW) spotting is challenging in far-field due to the complexities and variations in acoustic conditions and the environmental interference in signal transmission. A suite of carefully designed and optimized audio front-end (AFE) algorithms help mitigate these challenges and provide better quality audio signals to the downstream modules such as WW spotter. Since the WW model is trained with the AFE-processed audio data, its performance is sensitive to AFE variations, such as gain changes. In addition, when deploying to new devices, the WW performance is not guaranteed because the AFE is unknown to the WW model. To address these issues, we propose a novel approach to use a new feature called $Δ$LFBE to decouple the AFE gain variations from the WW model. We modified the neural network architectures to accommodate the delta computation, with the feature extraction module unchanged. We evaluate our WW models using data collected from real household settings and showed the models with the $Δ$LFBE is robust to AFE gain changes. Specifically, when AFE gain changes up to $\pm$12dB, the baseline CNN model lost up to relative 19.0% in false alarm rate or 34.3% in false reject rate, while the model with $Δ$LFBE demonstrates no performance loss.

Investigating Constraint Relationship in Evolutionary Many-Constraint Optimization

This paper contributes to the treatment of extensive constraints in evolutionary many-constraint optimization through consideration of the relationships between pair-wise constraints. In a conflicting relationship, the functional value of one constraint increases as the value in another constraint decreases. In a harmonious relationship, the improvement in one constraint is rewarded with simultaneous improvement in the other constraint. In an independent relationship, the adjustment to one constraint never affects the adjustment to the other. Based on the different features, methods for identifying constraint relationships are discussed, helping to simplify many-constraint optimization problems (MCOPs). Additionally, the transitivity of the relationships is further discussed at the aim of determining the relationship in a new pair of constraints.

Correlated Differential Privacy: Feature Selection in Machine Learning

Privacy preserving in machine learning is a crucial issue in industry informatics since data used for training in industries usually contain sensitive information. Existing differentially private machine learning algorithms have not considered the impact of data correlation, which may lead to more privacy leakage than expected in industrial applications. For example, data collected for traffic monitoring may contain some correlated records due to temporal correlation or user correlation. To fill this gap, we propose a correlation reduction scheme with differentially private feature selection considering the issue of privacy loss when data have correlation in machine learning tasks. %The key to the proposed scheme is to describe the data correlation and select features which leads to less data correlation across the whole dataset. The proposed scheme involves five steps with the goal of managing the extent of data correlation, preserving the privacy, and supporting accuracy in the prediction results. In this way, the impact of data correlation is relieved with the proposed feature selection scheme, and moreover, the privacy issue of data correlation in learning is guaranteed. The proposed method can be widely used in machine learning algorithms which provide services in industrial areas. Experiments show that the proposed scheme can produce better prediction results with machine learning tasks and fewer mean square errors for data queries compared to existing schemes.

Learning to Match Jobs with Resumes from Sparse Interaction Data using Multi-View Co-Teaching Network

With the ever-increasing growth of online recruitment data, job-resume matching has become an important task to automatically match jobs with suitable resumes. This task is typically casted as a supervised text matching problem. Supervised learning is powerful when the labeled data is sufficient. However, on online recruitment platforms, job-resume interaction data is sparse and noisy, which affects the performance of job-resume match algorithms. To alleviate these problems, in this paper, we propose a novel multi-view co-teaching network from sparse interaction data for job-resume matching. Our network consists of two major components, namely text-based matching model and relation-based matching model. The two parts capture semantic compatibility in two different views, and complement each other. In order to address the challenges from sparse and noisy data, we design two specific strategies to combine the two components. First, two components share the learned parameters or representations, so that the original representations of each component can be enhanced. More importantly, we adopt a co-teaching mechanism to reduce the influence of noise in training data. The core idea is to let the two components help each other by selecting more reliable training instances. The two strategies focus on representation enhancement and data enhancement, respectively. Compared with pure text-based matching models, the proposed approach is able to learn better data representations from limited or even sparse interaction data, which is more resistible to noise in training data. Experiment results have demonstrated that our model is able to outperform state-of-the-art methods for job-resume matching.
