Internal Levin-Wen models

Levin-Wen models are a class of two-dimensional lattice spin models with a Hamiltonian that is a sum of commuting projectors, which describe topological phases of matter related to Drinfeld centres. We generalise this construction to lattice systems internal to a topological phase described by an arbitrary modular fusion category $\mathcal{C}$. The lattice system is defined in terms of an orbifold datum $\mathbb{A}$ in $\mathcal{C}$, from which we construct a state space and a commuting-projector Hamiltonian $H_{\mathbb{A}}$ acting on it. The topological phase of the degenerate ground states of $H_{\mathbb{A}}$ is characterised by a modular fusion category $\mathcal{C}_{\mathbb{A}}$ defined directly in terms of $\mathbb{A}$. By choosing different $\mathbb{A}$'s for a fixed $\mathcal{C}$, one obtains precisely all phases which are Witt-equivalent to $\mathcal{C}$. As special cases we recover the Kitaev and the Levin-Wen lattice models from instances of orbifold data in the trivial modular fusion category of vector spaces, as well as phases obtained by anyon condensation in a given phase $\mathcal{C}$.

Defects and excitations in the Kitaev model

We construct a Kitaev model with defects using twists or 2-cocycles of semi-simple, finite-dimensional Hopf algebras as defect data. This data is derived by applying Tannaka duality to Turaev-Viro topological quantum field theories with defects. From this we also derive additional conditions for moving, fusing and braiding excitations in the Kitaev model with defects. We give a description of excitations in the Kitaev model and show that they satisfy conditions we derive from Turaev-Viro topological quantum field theories with defects. Assigning trivial defect data one obtains transparent defects and we show that they can be removed, yielding the Kitaev model without defects.

Mapping class group actions from Hopf monoids and ribbon graphs

We show that any pivotal Hopf monoid $H$ in a symmetric monoidal category $\mathcal{C}$ gives rise to actions of mapping class groups of oriented surfaces of genus $g \geq 1$ with $n \geq 1$ boundary components. These mapping class group actions are given by group homomorphisms into the group of automorphisms of certain Yetter-Drinfeld modules over $H$. They are associated with edge slides in embedded ribbon graphs that generalise chord slides in chord diagrams. We give a concrete description of these mapping class group actions in terms of generating Dehn twists and defining relations. For the case where $\mathcal{C}$ is finitely complete and cocomplete, we also obtain actions of mapping class groups of closed surfaces by imposing invariance and coinvariance under the Yetter-Drinfeld module structure.
