Fast-Forward Reality: Authoring Error-Free Context-Aware Policies with Real-Time Unit Tests in Extended Reality

Advances in ubiquitous computing have enabled end-user authoring of context-aware policies (CAPs) that control smart devices based on specific contexts of the user and environment. However, authoring CAPs accurately and avoiding run-time errors is challenging for end-users as it is difficult to foresee CAP behaviors under complex real-world conditions. We propose Fast-Forward Reality, an Extended Reality (XR) based authoring workflow that enables end-users to iteratively author and refine CAPs by validating their behaviors via simulated unit test cases. We develop a computational approach to automatically generate test cases based on the authored CAP and the user's context history. Our system delivers each test case with immersive visualizations in XR, facilitating users to verify the CAP behavior and identify necessary refinements. We evaluated Fast-Forward Reality in a user study (N=12). Our authoring and validation process improved the accuracy of CAPs and the users provided positive feedback on the system usability.

Diffusion Facial Forgery Detection

Detecting diffusion-generated images has recently grown into an emerging research area. Existing diffusion-based datasets predominantly focus on general image generation. However, facial forgeries, which pose a more severe social risk, have remained less explored thus far. To address this gap, this paper introduces DiFF, a comprehensive dataset dedicated to face-focused diffusion-generated images. DiFF comprises over 500,000 images that are synthesized using thirteen distinct generation methods under four conditions. In particular, this dataset leverages 30,000 carefully collected textual and visual prompts, ensuring the synthesis of images with both high fidelity and semantic consistency. We conduct extensive experiments on the DiFF dataset via a human test and several representative forgery detection methods. The results demonstrate that the binary detection accuracy of both human observers and automated detectors often falls below 30%, shedding light on the challenges in detecting diffusion-generated facial forgeries. Furthermore, we propose an edge graph regularization approach to effectively enhance the generalization capability of existing detectors.

Local behavior of the Eden model on graphs and tessellations of manifolds

The Eden Model in $\mathbb{R}^n$ constructs a blob as follows: initially a single unit hypercube is infected, and each second a hypercube adjacent to the infected ones is selected randomly and infected. Manin, Roldán, and Schweinhart investigated the topology of the Eden model in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ by considering the possible shapes which can appear on the boundary. In particular, they give probabilistic lower bounds on the Betti numbers of the Eden model. In this paper, we prove analogous results for the Eden model on any infinite, vertex-transitive, locally finite graph: with high probability as time goes to infinity, every "possible" subgraph (with mild conditions on what "possible" means) occurs on the boundary of the Eden model at least a number of times proportional to an isoperimetric profile of the graph. Using this, we can extend the results about the topology of the Eden model to non-Euclidean spaces, such as hyperbolic $n$-space and universal covers of certain Riemannian manifolds.

Metalearning generalizable dynamics from trajectories

We present the interpretable meta neural ordinary differential equation (iMODE) method to rapidly learn generalizable (i.e., not parameter-specific) dynamics from trajectories of multiple dynamical systems that vary in their physical parameters. The iMODE method learns meta-knowledge, the functional variations of the force field of dynamical system instances without knowing the physical parameters, by adopting a bi-level optimization framework: an outer level capturing the common force field form among studied dynamical system instances and an inner level adapting to individual system instances. A priori physical knowledge can be conveniently embedded in the neural network architecture as inductive bias, such as conservative force field and Euclidean symmetry. With the learned meta-knowledge, iMODE can model an unseen system within seconds, and inversely reveal knowledge on the physical parameters of a system, or as a Neural Gauge to "measure" the physical parameters of an unseen system with observed trajectories. We test the validity of the iMODE method on bistable, double pendulum, Van der Pol, Slinky, and reaction-diffusion systems.

Energy gap of topological surface states in proximity to a magnetic insulator

Topological surface-states can acquire an energy gap when time-reversal symmetry is broken by interfacing with a magnetic insulator. This gap has yet to be measured. Such topological-magnetic insulator heterostructures can host a quantized anomalous Hall effect and can allow the control of the magnetic state of the insulator in a spintronic device. In this work, we observe the energy gap of topological surface-states in proximity to a magnetic insulator using magnetooptical Landau level spectroscopy. We measure Pb1-xSnxSe/EuSe heterostructures grown by molecular beam epitaxy exhibiting a record mobility and low Fermi energy. Through temperature dependent measurements and theoretical calculations, we show this gap is likely due to quantum confinement and conclude that the magnetic proximity effect is weak in this system. This weakness is disadvantageous for the realization of the quantum anomalous Hall effect, but favorable for spintronic devices which require the preservation of spin-momentum locking at the Fermi level.

Invariant Geometric Structures on Almost Abelian Lie Groups

An almost Abelian group is a non-Abelian Lie group with a codimension 1 Abelian subgroup. This paper investigates invariant Hermitian and Kähler structures on connected complex almost Abelian groups. We find explicit formulas for the left and right Haar measures, the modular function, and left and right generator vector fields on simply connected complex almost Abelian groups. From the generator fields, we obtain invariant vector and tensor field frames, allowing us to find an explicit form for all invariant tensor fields. Namely, all such invariant tensor fields have constant coefficients in the invariant frame. From this, we classify all invariant Hermitian forms on complex simply connected almost Abelian groups, and we prove the nonexistence of invariant Kähler forms on all such groups. Via constructions involving the pullback of the quotient map, we extend the explicit description of invariant Hermitian structures and the nonexistence of Kähler structures to connected almost Abelian groups.

CTP-Net: Character Texture Perception Network for Document Image Forgery Localization

Due to the progression of information technology in recent years, document images have been widely disseminated on social networks. With the help of powerful image editing tools, document images are easily forged without leaving visible manipulation traces, which leads to severe issues if significant information is falsified for malicious use. Therefore, the research of document image forensics is worth further exploring. In this paper, we propose a Character Texture Perception Network (CTP-Net) to localize the forged regions in document images. Specifically, considering the characters with semantics in a document image are highly vulnerable, capturing the forgery traces is the key to localize the forged regions. We design a Character Texture Stream (CTS) based on optical character recognition to capture features of text areas that are essential components of a document image. Meanwhile, texture features of the whole document image are exploited by an Image Texture Stream (ITS). Combining the features extracted from the CTS and the ITS, the CTP-Net can reveal more subtle forgery traces from document images. Moreover, to overcome the challenge caused by the lack of fake document images, we design a data generation strategy that is utilized to construct a Fake Chinese Trademark dataset (FCTM). Experimental results on different datasets demonstrate that the proposed CTP-Net is able to localize multi-scale forged areas in document images, and outperform the state-of-the-art forgery localization methods, even though post-processing operations are applied.

The coupling effect between the environment and strategies drives the emergence of group cooperation

Introducing environmental feedback into evolutionary game theory has led to the development of eco-evolutionary games, which have gained popularity due to their ability to capture the intricate interplay between the environment and decision-making processes. However, current researches in this field focus on the study to macroscopic evolutionary dynamics in infinite populations. In this study, we propose a multi-agent computational model based on reinforcement learning to explore the coupled dynamics between strategies and the environment in finite populations from a bottom-up perspective. Our findings indicate that even in environments that favor defectors, high levels of group cooperation can emerge from self-interested individuals, highlighting the significant role of the coupling effect between the environment and strategies. Over time, the higher payoff of defection can be diluted due to environmental degradation, while cooperation can become the dominant strategy when positively reinforced by the environment. Remarkably, individuals can accurately detect the inflection point of the environment solely through rewards, when a reinforcing positive feedback loop are triggered, resulting in a rapid increase in agents' rewards and facilitating the establishment and maintenance of group cooperation. Our research provides a fresh perspective on understanding the emergence of group cooperation and sheds light on the underlying mechanisms involving individuals and the environment.

Towards Generalizable Deepfake Detection by Primary Region Regularization

The existing deepfake detection methods have reached a bottleneck in generalizing to unseen forgeries and manipulation approaches. Based on the observation that the deepfake detectors exhibit a preference for overfitting the specific primary regions in input, this paper enhances the generalization capability from a novel regularization perspective. This can be simply achieved by augmenting the images through primary region removal, thereby preventing the detector from over-relying on data bias. Our method consists of two stages, namely the static localization for primary region maps, as well as the dynamic exploitation of primary region masks. The proposed method can be seamlessly integrated into different backbones without affecting their inference efficiency. We conduct extensive experiments over three widely used deepfake datasets - DFDC, DF-1.0, and Celeb-DF with five backbones. Our method demonstrates an average performance improvement of 6% across different backbones and performs competitively with several state-of-the-art baselines.

HIT-UAV: A high-altitude infrared thermal dataset for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-based object detection

We present the HIT-UAV dataset, a high-altitude infrared thermal dataset for object detection applications on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The dataset comprises 2,898 infrared thermal images extracted from 43,470 frames in hundreds of videos captured by UAVs in various scenarios including schools, parking lots, roads, and playgrounds. Moreover, the HIT-UAV provides essential flight data for each image, such as flight altitude, camera perspective, date, and daylight intensity. For each image, we have manually annotated object instances with bounding boxes of two types (oriented and standard) to tackle the challenge of significant overlap of object instances in aerial images. To the best of our knowledge, the HIT-UAV is the first publicly available high-altitude UAV-based infrared thermal dataset for detecting persons and vehicles. We have trained and evaluated well-established object detection algorithms on the HIT-UAV. Our results demonstrate that the detection algorithms perform exceptionally well on the HIT-UAV compared to visual light datasets since infrared thermal images do not contain significant irrelevant information about objects. We believe that the HIT-UAV will contribute to various UAV-based applications and researches. The dataset is freely available at https://github.com/suojiashun/HIT-UAV-Infrared-Thermal-Dataset.

Deep Convolutional Pooling Transformer for Deepfake Detection

Recently, Deepfake has drawn considerable public attention due to security and privacy concerns in social media digital forensics. As the wildly spreading Deepfake videos on the Internet become more realistic, traditional detection techniques have failed in distinguishing between real and fake. Most existing deep learning methods mainly focus on local features and relations within the face image using convolutional neural networks as a backbone. However, local features and relations are insufficient for model training to learn enough general information for Deepfake detection. Therefore, the existing Deepfake detection methods have reached a bottleneck to further improve the detection performance. To address this issue, we propose a deep convolutional Transformer to incorporate the decisive image features both locally and globally. Specifically, we apply convolutional pooling and re-attention to enrich the extracted features and enhance efficacy. Moreover, we employ the barely discussed image keyframes in model training for performance improvement and visualize the feature quantity gap between the key and normal image frames caused by video compression. We finally illustrate the transferability with extensive experiments on several Deepfake benchmark datasets. The proposed solution consistently outperforms several state-of-the-art baselines on both within- and cross-dataset experiments.

XAIR: A Framework of Explainable AI in Augmented Reality

Explainable AI (XAI) has established itself as an important component of AI-driven interactive systems. With Augmented Reality (AR) becoming more integrated in daily lives, the role of XAI also becomes essential in AR because end-users will frequently interact with intelligent services. However, it is unclear how to design effective XAI experiences for AR. We propose XAIR, a design framework that addresses "when", "what", and "how" to provide explanations of AI output in AR. The framework was based on a multi-disciplinary literature review of XAI and HCI research, a large-scale survey probing 500+ end-users' preferences for AR-based explanations, and three workshops with 12 experts collecting their insights about XAI design in AR. XAIR's utility and effectiveness was verified via a study with 10 designers and another study with 12 end-users. XAIR can provide guidelines for designers, inspiring them to identify new design opportunities and achieve effective XAI designs in AR.

ASMCap: An Approximate String Matching Accelerator for Genome Sequence Analysis Based on Capacitive Content Addressable Memory

Genome sequence analysis is a powerful tool in medical and scientific research. Considering the inevitable sequencing errors and genetic variations, approximate string matching (ASM) has been adopted in practice for genome sequencing. However, with exponentially increasing bio-data, ASM hardware acceleration is facing severe challenges in improving the throughput and energy efficiency with the accuracy constraint. This paper presents ASMCap, an ASM acceleration approach for genome sequence analysis with hardware-algorithm co-optimization. At the circuit level, ASMCap adopts charge-domain computing based on the capacitive multi-level content addressable memories (ML-CAMs), and outperforms the state-of-the-art ML-CAM-based ASM accelerators EDAM with higher accuracy and energy efficiency. ASMCap also has misjudgment correction capability with two proposed hardware-friendly strategies, namely the Hamming-Distance Aid Correction (HDAC) for the substitution-dominant edits and the Threshold-Aware Sequence Rotation (TASR) for the consecutive indels. Evaluation results show that ASMCap can achieve an average of 1.2x (from 74.7% to 87.6%) and up to 1.8x (from 46.3% to 81.2%) higher F1 score (the key metric of accuracy), 1.4x speedup, and 10.8x energy efficiency improvement compared with EDAM. Compared with the other ASM accelerators, including ResMA based on the comparison matrix, and SaVI based on the seeding strategy, ASMCap achieves an average improvement of 174x and 61x speedup, and 8.7e3x and 943x higher energy efficiency, respectively.

Rapidly Encoding Generalizable Dynamics in a Euclidean Symmetric Neural Network

Slinky, a helical elastic rod, is a seemingly simple structure with unusual mechanical behavior; for example, it can walk down a flight of stairs under its own weight. Taking Slinky as a test-case, we propose a physics-informed deep learning approach for building reduced-order models of physical systems. The approach introduces a Euclidean symmetric neural network (ESNN) architecture that is trained under the neural ordinary differential equation framework to learn the 2D latent dynamics from the motion trajectory of a reduced-order representation of the 3D Slinky. The ESNN implements a physics-guided architecture that simultaneously preserves energy invariance and force equivariance under Euclidean transformations of the input, including translation, rotation, and reflection. The embedded Euclidean symmetry provides physics-guided interpretability and generalizability, while preserving the full expressive power of the neural network. We demonstrate that the ESNN approach is able to accelerate simulation by one to two orders of magnitude compared to traditional numerical methods and achieve a superior generalization performance while classic neural networks fail to learn the Slinky dynamics, i.e., the ESNN, trained on a single demonstration case, predicts the motions accurately for unseen cases of different Slinky configurations and boundary conditions. Further investigation into the ESNN reveals that it explicitly learns the nonlinear coupling between stretching and bending of the Slinky.

Field Induced Chiral Soliton Phase in the Kitaev Spin Chain

The bond-dependent Ising interaction present in the Kitaev model has attracted considerable attention. The appearance of an unexpected intermediate phase under a magnetic field is particularly intriguing, and one may wonder if a similar phase occurs in the Kitaev spin chain with alternating $x$- and $y$-bond Ising interactions. Previous studies have focused on a transverse field, $h_z$, and reported a direct transition to the polarized state. Here, we investigate phases with arbitrary angle of two longitudinal fields, $h_x$ and $h_y$. For a magnetic field applied along the diagonal, $h_x$=$h_y$, the chain remains gapless up to a critical field $h^{c_1}_{xy}$. Surprisingly, above $h^{c1}_{xy}$ it enters an unusual intermediate phase before reaching the polarized state at $h^{c_2}_{xy}$. This phase is characterized by a staggered vector chirality and for periodic boundary conditions, a two-fold degeneracy with a finite gap. For open boundary systems the ground-state exhibits a single soliton, lowering the energy, and gapless excitations. However, the corresponding anti-soliton raises the energy sufficiently that a gap appears for soliton and anti-soliton pairs in periodic systems. An intuitive variational picture is developed describing the soliton phase.

Assessing The Performance of YOLOv5 Algorithm for Detecting Volunteer Cotton Plants in Corn Fields at Three Different Growth Stages

The boll weevil (Anthonomus grandis L.) is a serious pest that primarily feeds on cotton plants. In places like Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas, due to sub-tropical climatic conditions, cotton plants can grow year-round and therefore the left-over seeds from the previous season during harvest can continue to grow in the middle of rotation crops like corn (Zea mays L.) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.). These feral or volunteer cotton (VC) plants when reach the pinhead squaring phase (5-6 leaf stage) can act as hosts for the boll weevil pest. The Texas Boll Weevil Eradication Program (TBWEP) employs people to locate and eliminate VC plants growing by the side of roads or fields with rotation crops but the ones growing in the middle of fields remain undetected. In this paper, we demonstrate the application of computer vision (CV) algorithm based on You Only Look Once version 5 (YOLOv5) for detecting VC plants growing in the middle of corn fields at three different growth stages (V3, V6, and VT) using unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) remote sensing imagery. All the four variants of YOLOv5 (s, m, l, and x) were used and their performances were compared based on classification accuracy, mean average precision (mAP), and F1-score. It was found that YOLOv5s could detect VC plants with a maximum classification accuracy of 98% and mAP of 96.3 % at the V6 stage of corn while YOLOv5s and YOLOv5m resulted in the lowest classification accuracy of 85% and YOLOv5m and YOLOv5l had the least mAP of 86.5% at the VT stage on images of size 416 x 416 pixels. The developed CV algorithm has the potential to effectively detect and locate VC plants growing in the middle of corn fields as well as expedite the management aspects of TBWEP.
