Stochastic Analysis of a Churn-Tolerant Structured Peer-to-Peer Scheme

We present and analyze a simple and general scheme to build a churn (fault)-tolerant structured Peer-to-Peer (P2P) network. Our scheme shows how to "convert" a static network into a dynamic distributed hash table(DHT)-based P2P network such that all the good properties of the static network are guaranteed with high probability (w.h.p). Applying our scheme to a cube-connected cycles network, for example, yields a $O(\log N)$ degree connected network, in which every search succeeds in $O(\log N)$ hops w.h.p., using $O(\log N)$ messages, where $N$ is the expected stable network size. Our scheme has an constant storage overhead (the number of nodes responsible for servicing a data item) and an $O(\log N)$ overhead (messages and time) per insertion and essentially no overhead for deletions. All these bounds are essentially optimal. While DHT schemes with similar guarantees are already known in the literature, this work is new in the following aspects: (1) It presents a rigorous mathematical analysis of the scheme under a general stochastic model of churn and shows the above guarantees; (2) The theoretical analysis is complemented by a simulation-based analysis that validates the asymptotic bounds even in moderately sized networks and also studies performance under changing stable network size; (3) The presented scheme seems especially suitable for maintaining dynamic structures under churn efficiently. In particular, we show that a spanning tree of low diameter can be efficiently maintained in constant time and logarithmic number of messages per insertion or deletion w.h.p. Fluctuation symmetries for work and heat

We consider a particle dragged through a medium at constant temperature as described by a Langevin equation with a time-dependent potential. The time-dependence is specified by an external protocol. We give conditions on potential and protocol under which the dissipative work satisfies an exact symmetry in its fluctuations for all times. We also present counter examples to that exact fluctuation symmetry when our conditions are not satisfied. Finally, we consider the dissipated heat which differs from the work by a temporal boundary term. We explain when and why there can be a correction to the standard fluctuation theorem due to the unboundedness of that temporal boundary. However, the corrected fluctuation symmetry has again a general validity.

Reversibility and Irreversibility within the Quantum Formalism

The discussion on time-reversal in quantum mechanics exists at least since Wigner's ``Uber die Operation der Zeitumkehr in der Quantenmechanik'' paper in 1932. If and how the dynamics of the quantum world is time-reversible has been the subject of many controversies. Some have seen quantum mechanics as fundamentally time-irreversible, see for example von Neumann, and some have seen in that the ultimate cause of time's arrow and second law behavior. In his best-selling book ``The Emperor's New Mind'', Roger Penrose argues similarly and concludes that ``our sought-for quantum gravity must be a time-asymmetric theory'' [p.351]. Not so long ago, we read yet about another project in Physicalia 26: to extend quantum mechanics into new fundamentally irreversible equations, thus proposing a new theory giving ``... une description fondamentale irreversible de tout systeme physique''.
