Scattering for the 4D Zakharov system below the ground state

For the Zakharov system in four space dimensions, we prove that all solutions inside the potential well of the ground states are global and scattering in the energy space, with no other restriction such as symmetry. The proof has already been reduced by [3] to ruling out the existence of a minimal non-scattering solution that is precompact along some trajectory. This paper carries out the final step in the proof, namely we exclude the possibility of precompact solutions inside the potential well by combining two distinct arguments depending on the motion of trajectory.

The massless and the non-relativistic limit for the cubic Dirac equation

Massive and massless Dirac equations with Lorentz-covariant cubic nonlinearities are considered in spatial dimension $d=2,3$. Global well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for small initial data in scale-invariant Sobolev spaces and scattering of solutions is proved by a new approach which uses bilinear Fourier restriction estimates and atomic function spaces. Furthermore, global uniform convergence results, both in the massless and in the non-relativistic limit, are proved at optimal regularity. In both regimes, these are the first results which imply convergence of scattering states and wave operators.

Minimal non-scattering solutions for the Zakharov system

We consider the Zakharov system in the energy critical dimension $d=4$ with energy below the ground state. It is known that below the ground state solutions exist globally in time, and scatter in the radial case. Scattering below the ground state in the non-radial case is an open question. We show that if scattering fails, then there exists a minimal energy non-scattering solution below the ground state. Moreover the orbit of this solution is precompact modulo translations. The proof follows by a concentration compactness argument, together with a refined small data theory for energy dispersed solutions.

A note on bilinear wave-Schr\"odinger interactions

We consider bilinear restriction estimates for wave-Schr\"odinger interactions and provided a sharp condition to ensure that the product belongs to $L^q_t L^r_x$ in the full bilinear range $\frac{2}{q} + \frac{d+1}{r} < d+1$, $1 \leqslant q, r \leqslant 2$. Moreover, we give a counter-example which shows that the bilinear restriction estimate can fail, even in the transverse setting. This failure is closely related to the lack of curvature of the cone. Finally we mention extensions of these estimates to adapted function spaces. In particular we give a general transference type principle for $U^2$ type spaces that roughly implies that if an estimate holds for homogeneous solutions, then it also holds in $U^2$. This transference argument can be used to obtain bilinear and multilinear estimates in $U^2$ from the corresponding bounds for homogeneous solutions.

Global wellposedness for the energy-critical Zakharov system below the ground state

The Cauchy problem for the Zakharov system in the energy-critical dimension $d=4$ is considered. We prove that global well-posedness holds in the full (non-radial) energy space for any initial data with energy and wave mass below the ground state threshold. The result is based on a Strichartz estimate for the Schr\"odinger equation with a potential. More precisely, a Strichartz estimate is proved to hold uniformly for any potential solving the free wave equation with mass below the ground state constraint. The key new ingredient is a bilinear (adjoint) Fourier restriction estimate for solutions of the inhomogeneous Schr\"odinger equation with forcing in dual endpoint Strichartz spaces.

The Zakharov system in dimension $d \geqslant 4$

The sharp range of Sobolev spaces is determined in which the Cauchy problem for the classical Zakharov system is well-posed, which includes existence of solutions, uniqueness, persistence of initial regularity, and real-analytic dependence on the initial data. In addition, under a condition on the data for the Schr\"odinger equation at the lowest admissible regularity, global well-posedness and scattering is proved. The results cover energy-critical and energy-supercritical dimensions $d \geqslant 4$.

On the Division Problem for the Wave Maps Equation

We consider Wave Maps into the sphere and give a new proof of small data global well-posedness and scattering in the critical Besov space, in any space dimension $n \geq 2$. We use an adapted version of the atomic space $U^2$ as the single building block for the iteration space. Our approach to the so-called division problem is modular as it systematically uses two ingredients: atomic bilinear (adjoint) Fourier restriction estimates and an algebra property of the iteration space, both of which can be adapted to other phase functions.

Asymptotic Behavior of the Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system

In previous work on the Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system first existence and then decay estimates have been shown. Here we show that the Maxwell-Klein-Gordon in the Lorentz gauge satisfy the "weak null condition" and we give the detailed asymptotics for the scalar field and the potential. These asymptotics have two parts, one wave like along outgoing light cones at null infinity, and one homogeneous inside the light cone at time like infinity. Here the charge plays a crucial role in imposing an oscillating factor in the asymptotic system for the field, and in the null asymptotics for the potential. Similar results have previously been shown for Einstein's equations in wave coordinates, and the Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system apart from being interesting in itself also provides a simpler semilinear model of the quasilinear Enstein's equations.

On the Majorana condition for nonlinear Dirac systems

For arbitrarily large initial data in an open set defined by an approximate Majorana condition, global existence and scattering results for solutions to the Dirac equation with Soler-type nonlinearity and the Dirac-Klein-Gordon system in critical spaces in spatial dimension three are established.

Conditional large data scattering results for the Dirac-Klein-Gordon system

We obtain conditional results on the global existence and scattering for large solutions of the Dirac-Klein-Gordon system in critical spaces in dimension $1+3$. In particular, for bounded solutions we identify a space-time Lebesgue norm controlling the global behaviour. The proof relies on refined nonlinear estimates involving the controlling norm.

Multi-scale bilinear restriction estimates for general phases

We prove (adjoint) bilinear restriction estimates for general phases at different scales in the full non-endpoint mixed norm range, and give bounds with a sharp and explicit dependence on the phases. These estimates have applications to high-low frequency interactions for solutions to partial differential equations, as well as to the linear restriction problem for surfaces with degenerate curvature. As a consequence, we obtain new bilinear restriction estimates for elliptic phases and wave/Klein-Gordon interactions in the full bilinear range, and give a refined Strichartz inequality for the Klein-Gordon equation. In addition, we extend these bilinear estimates to hold in adapted function spaces by using a transference type principle which holds for vector valued waves.

Transference of Bilinear Restriction Estimates to Quadratic Variation Norms and the Dirac-Klein-Gordon System

Firstly, bilinear Fourier Restriction estimates --which are well-known for free waves-- are extended to adapted spaces of functions of bounded quadratic variation, under quantitative assumptions on the phase functions. This has applications to nonlinear dispersive equations, in particular in the presence of resonances. Secondly, critical global well-posedness and scattering results for massive Dirac-Klein-Gordon systems in dimension three are obtained, in resonant as well as in non-resonant regimes. The results apply to small initial data in scale-invariant Sobolev spaces exhibiting a small amount of angular regularity.

A characterisation of the Besov-Lipschitz and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces using Poisson like kernels

We give a complete characterisation of the spaces $\dot{B}^{\alpha}_{p,q}$ and $\dot{F}^{\alpha}_{p,q}$ by using a non-smooth kernel satisfying near minimal conditions. The tools used include a Stromberg-Torchinsky type estimate for certain maximal functions and the concept of a distribution of finite growth, inspired by Stein. Moreover, our exposition also makes essential use of a number of refinements of the well-known Calderon reproducing formula. The results are then applied to obtain the characterisation of these spaces via a fractional derivative of the Poisson kernel.

Global well-posedness for the massless cubic Dirac equation

We show that the cubic Dirac equation with zero mass is globally well-posed for small data in the scale invariant space H^{\frac{n-1}{2}}(R^n) for n=2, 3. The proof proceeds by using the Fierz identities to rewrite the equation in a form where the null structure of the system is readily apparent. This null structure is then exploited via bilinear estimates in spaces based on the null frame spaces of Tataru. We hope that the spaces and estimates used here can be applied to other nonlinear Dirac equations in the scale invariant setting. Our work complements recent results of Bejenaru-Herr who proved a similar result for n=3 in the massive case.

A note on the Chern-Simons-Dirac equations in the Coulomb Gauge

We prove that the Chern-Simons-Dirac equations in the Coulomb gauge are locally well-posed from initial data in H^s with s > 1/4 . To study nonlinear Wave or Dirac equations at this regularity generally requires the presence of null structure. The novel point here is that we make no use of the null structure of the system. Instead we exploit the additional elliptic structure in the Coulomb gauge together with the bilinear Strichartz estimates of Klainerman-Tataru.

Bilinear Estimates and Applications to Global Well-posedness for the Dirac-Klein-Gordon Equation on R^{1+1}

We prove new bilinear estimates for the X^{s, b}_\pm(R^2) spaces which are optimal up to endpoints. These estimates are often used in the theory of nonlinear Dirac equations on R^{1+1}. The proof of the bilinear estimates follows from a dyadic decomposition in the spirit of Tao [21] and D'Ancona, Foschi, and Selberg [11]. As an application, by using the I-method of Colliander, Keel, Staffilani, Takaoka, and Tao, we extend the work of Tesfahun [23] on global existence below the charge class for the Dirac-Klein- Gordon equation on R^{1+1}.

Global existence for an L^2 critical Nonlinear Dirac equation in one dimension

We prove global existence from $L^2$ initial data for a nonlinear Dirac equation known as the Thirring model. Local existence in $H^s$ for $s>0$, and global existence for $s>1/2$, has recently been proven by Selberg and Tesfahun by using $X^{s, b}$ spaces together with a type of null form estimate. In contrast, motivated by the recent work of Machihara, Nakanishi, and Tsugawa, we first prove local existence in $L^2$ by using null coordinates, where the time of existence depends on the profile of the initial data. To extend this to a global existence result we need to rule out concentration of $L^2$ norm, or charge, at a point. This is done by decomposing the solution into an approximately linear component and a component with improved integrability. We then prove global existence for all $s>0$.
