Jet Luminosity of Gamma-ray Bursts: Blandford-Znajek Mechanism v.s. Neutrino Annihilation Process

A neutrino-dominated accretion flow (NDAF) around a rotating stellar-mass black hole (BH) is one of the plausible candidates for the central engine of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Two mechanisms, i.e., Blandford-Znajek (BZ) mechanism and neutrino annihilation process, are generally considered to power GRBs. Using the analytic solutions from Xue et al. (2013) and ignoring the effects of the magnetic field configuration, we estimate the BZ and neutrino annihilation luminosities as the functions of the disk masses and BH spin parameters to contrast the observational jet luminosities of GRBs. The results show that, although the neutrino annihilation processes could account for most of GRBs, the BZ mechanism is more effective, especially for long-duration GRBs. Actually, if the energy of afterglows and flares of GRBs is included, the distinction between these two mechanisms is more significant. Furthermore, massive disk mass and high BH spin are beneficial to power high luminosities of GRBs. Finally, we discuss possible physical mechanisms to enhance the disk mass or the neutrino emission rate of NDAFs and relevant difference between these two mechanisms.

Can black-hole neutrino-cooled disks power short gamma-ray bursts?

Stellar-mass black holes (BHs) surrounded by neutrino-dominated accretion flows (NDAFs) are the plausible candidates to power gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) via neutrinos emission and their annihilation. The progenitors of short-duration GRBs (SGRBs) are generally considered to be compact binaries mergers. According to the simulation results, the disk mass of the NDAF has been limited after merger events. We can estimate such disk mass by using the current SGRB observational data and fireball model. The results show that the disk mass of a certain SGRB mainly depends on its output energy, jet opening angle, and central BH characteristics. Even for the extreme BH parameters, some SGRBs require massive disks, which approach or exceed the limits in simulations. We suggest that there may exist alternative magnetohydrodynamic processes or some mechanisms increasing the neutrino emission to produce SGRBs with the reasonable BH parameters and disk mass.

Vertical convection in neutrino-dominated accretion flows

We present the effects of the vertical convection on the structure and luminosity of the neutrino-dominated accretion flow (NDAF) around a stellar-mass black hole in spherical coordinates. We found that the convective energy transfer can suppress the radial advection in the NDAF, and that the density, temperature and opening angle are slightly changed. As a result, the neutrino luminosity and annihilation luminosity are increased, which is conducive to achieve the energy requirement of gamma-ray bursts.

On F-crystalline representations

We extend the theory of Kisin modules and crystalline representations to allow more general coefficient fields and lifts of Frobenius. In particular, for a finite and totally ramified extension $F/\mathbb Q_p$, and an arbitrary finite extension $K/F$, we construct a general class of infinite and totally wildly ramified extensions $K_\infty/K$ so that the functor $V\mapsto V|_{G_{K_\infty}}$ is fully-faithfull on the category of $F$-crystalline representations $V$. We also establish a new classification of $F$-Barsotti-Tate groups via Kisin modules of height 1 which allows more general lifts of Frobenius.

Thermal Stability of Magnetized, Optically Thin, Radiative Cooling-dominated Accretion Disks

We investigate the thermal stability of optically thin, two-temperature, radiative cooling-dominated accretion disks. Our linear analysis shows that the disk is thermally unstable without magnetic fields, which agrees with previous stability analysis on the Shapiro-Lightman-Eardley disk. By taking into account the effects of magnetic fields, however, we find that the disk can be or partly be thermally stable. Our results may be helpful to understand the outflows in optically thin flows. Moreover, such radiative cooling-dominated disks may provide a new explanation of the different behaviors between black hole and neutron star X-ray binaries on the radio/X-ray correlation.

The weight part of Serre's conjecture for GL(2)

Let p > 2 be prime. We use purely local methods to determine the possible reductions of certain two-dimensional crystalline representations, which we call "pseudo-Barsotti-Tate representations", over arbitrary finite extensions of the p-adics. As a consequence, we establish (under the usual Taylor-Wiles hypothesis) the weight part of Serre's conjecture for GL(2) over arbitrary totally real fields.

Revisting the boiling of quark nuggets at nonzero chemical potential

The boiling of possible quark nuggets during the quark-hadron phase transition of the Universe at nonzero chemical potential is revisited within the microscopic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach employed for the hadron phase, using two kinds of baryon interactions as fundamental inputs. To describe the deconfined phase of quark matter, we use a recently developed quark mass density-dependent model with a fully self-consistent thermodynamic treatment of confinement. We study the baryon number limit $A_{\rm boil}$ (above which boiling may be important) with three typical values for the confinement parameter $D$. It is firstly found that the baryon interaction with a softer equation of state for the hadron phase would only lead to a small increase of $A_{\rm boil}$. However, results depend sensitively on the confinement parameter in the quark model. Specifically, boiling might be important during the Universe cooling for a limited parameter range around $D^{1/2} = 170$ MeV, a value satisfying recent lattice QCD calculations of the vacuum chiral condensate, while for other choices of this parameter, boiling might not happen and cosmological quark nuggets of $10^2 < A < 10^{50}$ could survive.

Self-gravity in neutrino-dominated accretion disks

We present the effects of the self-gravity on the vertical structure and neutrino luminosity of the neutrino-dominated accretion disks in cylindrical coordinates. It is found that significant changes of the structure appear in the outer region of the disk, especially for high accretion rates (e.g., $\ga 1 M_\odot~\rm s^{-1}$), and thus causes the slight increase of the neutrino luminosity. Furthermore, the gravitational instability of the disk is reviewed by the vertical distribution of the Toomre parameter \citep{Toomre1964}, which may account for the late-time flares in gamma-ray bursts and the extended emission in short-duration gamma-ray bursts.

Variability of the giant X-ray bump in GRB 121027A and possible origin

The particular giant X-ray bump of GRB 121027A triggered by \emph{Swift} is quite different from the typical X-ray flares in gamma-ray bursts. There exhibit four parts of the observed structural variabilities in the rise and decay phase of the bump. Considering the quality of four parts of the data, we can only analyze the data from about 5300 s to about 6100 s in the bump using the stepwise filter correlation method (Gao et al. 2012), and find that the $86^{+5.9}_{-9.4}~\rm s$ periodic oscillation may exist, which is confirmed by the Lomb-Scargle method (Scargle 1982). Furthermore, a jet precession model (Liu et al. 2010) is proposed to account for such a variability.

Scattering theory without large-distance asymptotics

In conventional scattering theory, to obtain an explicit result, one imposes a precondition that the distance between target and observer is infinite. With the help of this precondition, one can asymptotically replace the Hankel function and the Bessel function with the sine functions so that one can achieve an explicit result. Nevertheless, after such a treatment, the information of the distance between target and observer is inevitably lost. In this paper, we show that such a precondition is not necessary: without losing any information of distance, one can still obtain an explicit result of a scattering rigorously. In other words, we give an rigorous explicit scattering result which contains the information of distance between target and observer. We show that at a finite distance, a modification factor --- the Bessel polynomial --- appears in the scattering amplitude, and, consequently, the cross section depends on the distance, the outgoing wave-front surface is no longer a sphere, and, besides the phase shift, there is an additional phase (the argument of the Bessel polynomial) appears in the scattering wave function.

Time evolution of flares in GRB 130925A: jet precession in black hole accretion system

GRB 130925A, composed of three gamma-ray emission episodes and a series of orderly flares, has been detected by $Swift$, Fermi, Konus-$Wind$, and $INTEGRAL$. If the third weakest gamma-ray episode can be considered as a giant flare, we find that after the second gamma-ray episode observed by $INTEGRAL$ located at about 2000 s, there exists a positive relation between the time intervals of the adjacent flares and the time since the episode. We suggest that the second gamma-ray episode and its flares originate from the resumption of the accretion process due to the fragments from the collapsar falling back, such a relation may be related to a hyperaccretion disk around a precessed black hole (BH). We propose that the origin and time evolution of the flares, and the approximately symmetrical temporal structure and spectral evolution of the single flare, can be explained well by the jet precession model \citep{Liu2010}. In addition, the mass and spin of the BH can be constrained, which indicates a stellar-mass, fast rotating BH located in the center of GRB 130925A.

The Buzzard-Diamond-Jarvis conjecture for unitary groups

Let p > 2 be prime. We prove the weight part of Serre's conjecture for rank two unitary groups for mod p representations in the unramified case (that is, the Buzzard-Diamond-Jarvis conjecture for unitary groups), by proving that any Serre weight which occurs is a predicted weight. This completes the analysis begun in [BLGG11], which proved that all predicted Serre weights occur. Our methods are purely local, using the theory of (phi,Ghat)-modules to determine the possible reductions of certain two-dimensional crystalline representations.

Revisiting the Light Curves of Gamma-ray Bursts in the Relativistic Turbulence Model

Rapid temporal variability has been widely observed in the light curves of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). One possible mechanism for such variability is related to the relativistic eddies in the jet. In this paper, we include the contribution of the inter-eddy medium together with the eddies to the gamma-ray emission. We show that the gamma-ray emission can either lead or lag behind the observed synchrotron emission, where the latter originates in the inter-eddy medium and provides most of seed photons for producing gamma-ray emission through the inverse-Compton scattering. As a consequence, we argue that the lead/lag found in non-stationary short-lived light curves may not reveal the intrinsic lead/lag of different emission components. In addition, our results may explain the lead of gamma-ray emission with respect to optical emission observed in GRB 080319B.

Do Intermediate-Mass Black Holes Exist in Globular Clusters?

The existence of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) in globular clusters (GCs) remains a crucial problem. Searching IMBHs in GCs reveals a discrepancy between radio observations and dynamical modelings: the upper mass limits constrained by radio observations are systematically lower than that of dynamical modelings. One possibility for such a discrepancy is that, as we suggest in this work, there exist outflows in accretion flows. Our results indicate that, for most sources, current radio observations cannot rule out the possibility that IMBHs may exist in GCs. In addition, we adopt an \dot{M}-L_{R} relation to revisit this issue, which confirms the results obtained by the Fundamental Plane relation.

Neutrino-cooled Accretion Model with Magnetic Coupling for X-ray Flares in GRBs

The neutrino-cooled accretion disk, which was proposed to work as the central engine of gamma-ray bursts, encounters difficulty in interpreting the X-ray flares after the prompt gamma-ray emission. In this paper, the magnetic coupling between the inner disk and the central black hole is taken into consideration. For mass accretion rates around $0.001 \sim 0.1 M_{\sun} s^{-1}$, our results show that the luminosity of neutrino annihilation can be significantly enhanced due to the coupling effects. As a consequence, after the gamma-ray emission, a remnant disk with mass $M_{disk} \la 0.5 M_{\sun}$ may power most of the observed X-ray flares with the rest frame duration less than 100 seconds. In addition, a comparison between the magnetic coupling process and the Blandford-Znajek mechanism is shown on the extraction of black hole rotational energy.

Relativistic global solutions of neutrino-dominated accretion flows

Neutrino-dominated accretion flows (NDAFs) around rotating stellar-mass black holes are plausible candidates for the central engines of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We investigate one-dimensional global solutions of NDAFs, taking account of general relativity in Kerr metric, neutrino physics and nucleosynthesis more precisely than previous works. We calculate sixteen solutions with different characterized accretion rates and black hole spins to exhibit the radial distributions of various physical properties in NDAFs. \iffalse We find that the gas pressure and the neutrino cooling always become dominated in the inner region for large accretion rate, $\gtrsim 0.1 M_\odot$ $\rm s^{-1}$. \fi We confirm that the electron degeneracy has important effects in NDAFs and we find that the electron fraction is about 0.46 in the outer region for all the sixteen solutions. From the perspective of the mass fraction, free nucleons, $\rm ^4He$, and $\rm ^{56}Fe$ dominate in the inner, middle, and outer region, respectively. The influence of neutrino trapping on the annihilation is of importance for the superhigh accretion ($\dot M=10M_{\odot} \rm s^{-1}$) and most of the sixteen solutions have an adequate annihilation luminosity for GRBs.

Compatibility of Kisin modules for different uniformizers

Let p be a prime and T a lattice inside a semi-stable representation V. We prove that Kisin modules associated to T by selecting different uniformizers are isomorphic after tensoring a subring in W(R). As consequences, we show that several lattices inside the filtered (phi, N)-module of V constructed from Kisin modules are independent on the choice of uniformizers. Finally we use a similar strategy to show that the Wach module can be recovered from the (φ, \hat G)-module associated to T when V is crystalline and the base field is unramified.
