The Future of Visualization Dashboards in the Age of Generative AI

Generative AI promises easier dashboard creation, raising questions about the future of dashboards and the people who create and use them. We interviewed 16 experts based in 14 countries about their practices and expectations. Almost all expected dashboards to persist for recurring questions, monitoring, and reporting. They anticipated adaptive views and combinations of language, graphical controls, and gestures, while emphasizing interaction as part of human exploration and understanding. Participants expected authors' responsibilities to shift toward specifying requirements, curating generated work, and evaluating outputs, with design knowledge and communication remaining important. Easier creation also raised concerns about validation effort, users' understanding, maintenance, and personalization weakening shared understanding. We discuss seven opportunities for research and practice concerning validation, end-user education, dashboard proliferation and rot, organizational guidance, adaptation, novel visualizations, and accountability for AI-generated content. Our findings connect dashboard evolution with the human and organizational work needed to sustain their use.

Participatory AI: A Scandinavian Approach to Human-Centered AI

AI's transformative impact on work, education, and everyday life makes it as much a political artifact as a technological one. Current AI models are opaque, centralized, and overly generic. The algorithmic automation they provide threatens human agency and democratic values in both workplaces and daily life. To confront such challenges, we turn to Scandinavian Participatory Design (PD), which was devised in the 1970s to face a similar threat from mechanical automation. In the PD tradition, technology is seen not just as an artifact, but as a locus of democracy. Drawing from this tradition, we propose Participatory AI as a PD approach to human-centered AI that applies five PD principles to four design challenges for algorithmic automation. We use concrete case studies to illustrate how to treat AI models less as proprietary products and more as shared socio-technical systems that enhance rather than diminish human agency, human dignity, and human values.

Context-Mediated Domain Adaptation in Multi-Agent Sensemaking Systems

Domain experts possess tacit knowledge that they cannot easily articulate through explicit specifications. When experts modify AI-generated artifacts by correcting terminology, restructuring arguments, and adjusting emphasis, these edits reveal domain understanding that remains latent in traditional prompt-based interactions. Current systems treat such modifications as endpoint corrections rather than as implicit specifications that could reshape subsequent reasoning. We propose context-mediated domain adaptation, a paradigm where user modifications to system-generated artifacts serve as implicit domain specification that reshapes LLM-powered multi-agent reasoning behavior. Through our system Seedentia, a web-based multi-agent framework for sense-making, we demonstrate bidirectional semantic links between generated artifacts and system reasoning. Our approach enables specification bootstrapping where vague initial prompts evolve into precise domain specifications through iterative human-AI collaboration, implicit knowledge transfer through reverse-engineered user edits, and in-context learning where agent behavior adapts based on observed correction patterns. We present results from an evaluation with domain experts who generated and modified research questions from academic papers. Our system extracted 46 domain knowledge entries from user modifications, demonstrating the feasibility of capturing implicit expertise through edit patterns, though the limited sample size constrains conclusions about systematic quality improvements.

InvestChat: Exploring Multimodal Interaction via Natural Language, Touch, and Pen in an Investment Dashboard

We designed and implemented InvestChat, a multimodal tablet-based application that supports stock market exploration with multiple coordinated views and an LLM-powered chat. We evaluated the application with 12 novice investors. Our findings suggest that combining natural language, touch, and pen input during stock market exploration facilitates user engagement. Participants leveraged the modalities in complementary ways, enjoying the freedom of choice and finding natural language most effective.

Hey Dashboard!: Supporting Voice, Text, and Pointing Modalities in Dashboard Onboarding

Visualization dashboards are regularly used for data exploration and analysis, but their complex interactions and interlinked views often require time-consuming onboarding sessions from dashboard authors. Preparing these onboarding materials is labor-intensive and requires manual updates when dashboards change. Recent advances in multimodal interaction powered by large language models (LLMs) provide ways to support self-guided onboarding. We present DIANA (Dashboard Interactive Assistant for Navigation and Analysis), a multimodal dashboard assistant that helps users for navigation and guided analysis through chat, audio, and mouse-based interactions. Users can choose any interaction modality or a combination of them to onboard themselves on the dashboard. Each modality highlights relevant dashboard features to support user orientation. Unlike typical LLM systems that rely solely on text-based chat, DIANA combines multiple modalities to provide explanations directly in the dashboard interface. We conducted a qualitative user study to understand the use of different modalities for different types of onboarding tasks and their complexities.

Agentic Visualization: Extracting Agent-based Design Patterns from Visualization Systems

Autonomous agents powered by Large Language Models are transforming AI, creating an imperative for the visualization field to embrace agentic frameworks. However, our field's focus on a human in the sensemaking loop raises critical questions about autonomy, delegation, and coordination for such \textit{agentic visualization} that preserve human agency while amplifying analytical capabilities. This paper addresses these questions by reinterpreting existing visualization systems with semi-automated or fully automatic AI components through an agentic lens. Based on this analysis, we extract a collection of design patterns for agentic visualization, including agentic roles, communication and coordination. These patterns provide a foundation for future agentic visualization systems that effectively harness AI agents while maintaining human insight and control.

Multi-Agent Data Visualization and Narrative Generation

Recent advancements in the field of AI agents have impacted the way we work, enabling greater automation and collaboration between humans and agents. In the data visualization field, multi-agent systems can be useful for employing agents throughout the entire data-to-communication pipeline. We present a lightweight multi-agent system that automates the data analysis workflow, from data exploration to generating coherent visual narratives for insight communication. Our approach combines a hybrid multi-agent architecture with deterministic components, strategically externalizing critical logic from LLMs to improve transparency and reliability. The system delivers granular, modular outputs that enable surgical modifications without full regeneration, supporting sustainable human-AI collaboration. We evaluated our system across 4 diverse datasets, demonstrating strong generalizability, narrative quality, and computational efficiency with minimal dependencies.

The Plot Thickens: Quantitative Part-by-Part Exploration of MLLM Visualization Literacy

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) can interpret data visualizations, but what makes a visualization understandable to these models? Do factors like color, shape, and text influence legibility, and how does this compare to human perception? In this paper, we build on prior work to systematically assess which visualization characteristics impact MLLM interpretability. We expanded the Visualization Literacy Assessment Test (VLAT) test set from 12 to 380 visualizations by varying plot types, colors, and titles. This allowed us to statistically analyze how these features affect model performance. Our findings suggest that while color palettes have no significant impact on accuracy, plot types and the type of title significantly affect MLLM performance. We observe similar trends for model omissions. Based on these insights, we look into which plot types are beneficial for MLLMs in different tasks and propose visualization design principles that enhance MLLM readability.
