Large Plastic Scintillator Panels with WLS Fiber Readout; Optimization of Components

Results are presented on R&D efforts to design and build large size veto panels, optimized for underground low background experiments, in the most efficient and economical way using commercially available components. A variety of plastic scintillators, photomultiplier tubes, wavelength shifting fibers, and light reflector combinations were tested. Results of these studies and performance of a 2.2 meter long panel are presented.

Astroparticle Physics with a Customized Low-Background Broad Energy Germanium Detector

The MAJORANA Collaboration is building the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, a 60 kg array of high purity germanium detectors housed in an ultra-low background shield at the Sanford Underground Laboratory in Lead, SD. The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR will search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 76Ge while demonstrating the feasibility of a tonne-scale experiment. It may also carry out a dark matter search in the 1-10 GeV/c^2 mass range. We have found that customized Broad Energy Germanium (BEGe) detectors produced by Canberra have several desirable features for a neutrinoless double-beta decay experiment, including low electronic noise, excellent pulse shape analysis capabilities, and simple fabrication. We have deployed a customized BEGe, the MAJORANA Low-Background BEGe at Kimballton (MALBEK), in a low-background cryostat and shield at the Kimballton Underground Research Facility in Virginia. This paper will focus on the detector characteristics and measurements that can be performed with such a radiation detector in a low-background environment.

Search for Free Decay of Negative Pions in Water and Light Materials

We report on a search for the free decay component of pi- stopped in water and light materials. A non-zero value of this would be an indication of anomalous nu_e contamination to the nu_e and nu_mu_bar production at stopped-pion neutrino facilities. No free decay component of pi- was observed in water, Beryllium, and Aluminum, for which upper limits were established at 8.2E-4, 3.2E-3, and 7.7E-3, respectively.

Proposal for U.S. participation in Double-CHOOZ: A New theta-13 Experiment at the Chooz Reactor

It has recently been widely recognized that a reactor anti-neutrino disappearance experiment with two or more detectors is one of the most cost-effective ways to extend our reach in sensitivity for the neutrino mixing angle theta-13 without ambiguities from CP violation and matter effects. The physics capabilities of a new reactor experiment together with superbeams and neutrino factories have also been studied but these latter are considered by many to be more ambitious projects due to their higher costs, and hence to be farther in the future. We propose to contribute to an international collaboration to modify the existing neutrino physics facility at the Chooz-B Nuclear Power Station in France. The experiment, known as Double-CHOOZ, is expected to reach a sensitivity of sine squared of twice the mixing angle > 0.03 over a three year run, 2008-2011. This would cover roughly 85% of the remaining allowed region. The costs and time to first results for this critical parameter can be minimized since our project takes advantage of an existing infrastructure.
