CarveNet: Carving Point-Block for Complex 3D Shape Completion

3D point cloud completion is very challenging because it heavily relies on the accurate understanding of the complex 3D shapes (e.g., high-curvature, concave/convex, and hollowed-out 3D shapes) and the unknown & diverse patterns of the partially available point clouds. In this paper, we propose a novel solution,i.e., Point-block Carving (PC), for completing the complex 3D point cloud completion. Given the partial point cloud as the guidance, we carve a3D block that contains the uniformly distributed 3D points, yielding the entire point cloud. To achieve PC, we propose a new network architecture, i.e., CarveNet. This network conducts the exclusive convolution on each point of the block, where the convolutional kernels are trained on the 3D shape data. CarveNet determines which point should be carved, for effectively recovering the details of the complete shapes. Furthermore, we propose a sensor-aware method for data augmentation,i.e., SensorAug, for training CarveNet on richer patterns of partial point clouds, thus enhancing the completion power of the network. The extensive evaluations on the ShapeNet and KITTI datasets demonstrate the generality of our approach on the partial point clouds with diverse patterns. On these datasets, CarveNet successfully outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

MEC-Empowered Non-Terrestrial Network for 6G Wide-Area Time-Sensitive Internet of Things

In the upcoming sixth-generation (6G) era, the demand for constructing a wide-area time-sensitive Internet of Things (IoT) keeps increasing. As conventional cellular technologies are hard to be directly used for wide-area time-sensitive IoT, it is beneficial to use non-terrestrial infrastructures including satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), where a non-terrestrial network (NTN) can be built under the cell-free architecture. Driven by the time-sensitive requirements and uneven distribution of IoT devices, the NTN is required to be empowered by mobile edge computing (MEC) while providing oasis-oriented on-demand coverage for the devices. Nevertheless, communication and MEC systems are coupled with each other under the influence of complex propagation environment in the MEC-empowered NTN, which makes it hard to orchestrate the resources. In this paper, we propose a process-oriented framework to design the communication and MEC systems in a time-division manner. Under this framework, the large-scale channel state information (CSI) is used to characterize the complex propagation environment with an affordable cost, where a non-convex latency minimization problem is formulated. After that, the approximated problem is given and it can be decomposed into subproblems. These subproblems are further solved in an iterative way. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed process-oriented scheme over other algorithms. These results also indicate that the payload deployments of UAVs should be appropriately predesigned to improve the efficiency of resource use. Furthermore, the results imply that it is advantageous to integrate NTN with MEC for wide-area time-sensitive IoT.

Physical Layer Security for UAV Communications in 5G and Beyond Networks

Due to its high mobility and flexible deployment, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is drawing unprecedented interest in both military and civil applications to enable agile wireless communications and provide ubiquitous connectivity. Mainly operating in an open environment, UAV communications can benefit from dominant line-of-sight links; however, it on the other hand renders the UAVs more vulnerable to malicious eavesdropping or jamming attacks. Recently, physical layer security (PLS), which exploits the inherent randomness of the wireless channels for secure communications, has been introduced to UAV systems as an important complement to the conventional cryptography-based approaches. In this paper, a comprehensive survey on the current achievements of the UAV-aided wireless communications is conducted from the PLS perspective. We first introduce the basic concepts of UAV communications including the typical static/mobile deployment scenarios, the unique characteristics of air-to-ground channels, as well as various roles that a UAV may act when PLS is concerned. Then, we introduce the widely used secrecy performance metrics and start by reviewing the secrecy performance analysis and enhancing techniques for statically deployed UAV systems, and extend the discussion to a more general scenario where the UAVs' mobility is further exploited. For both cases, respectively, we summarize the commonly adopted methodologies in the corresponding analysis and design, then describe important works in the literature in detail. Finally, potential research directions and challenges are discussed to provide an outlook for future works in the area of UAV-PLS in 5G and beyond networks.

AdvHaze: Adversarial Haze Attack

In recent years, adversarial attacks have drawn more attention for their value on evaluating and improving the robustness of machine learning models, especially, neural network models. However, previous attack methods have mainly focused on applying some $l^p$ norm-bounded noise perturbations. In this paper, we instead introduce a novel adversarial attack method based on haze, which is a common phenomenon in real-world scenery. Our method can synthesize potentially adversarial haze into an image based on the atmospheric scattering model with high realisticity and mislead classifiers to predict an incorrect class. We launch experiments on two popular datasets, i.e., ImageNet and NIPS~2017. We demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a high success rate, and holds better transferability across different classification models than the baselines. We also visualize the correlation matrices, which inspire us to jointly apply different perturbations to improve the success rate of the attack. We hope this work can boost the development of non-noise-based adversarial attacks and help evaluate and improve the robustness of DNNs.

Cross correlation mediated by distant Majorana zero modes with no overlap

Existing studies via shot noise calculation conclude that the cross correlation between the currents in the two leads connected by a pair of Majorana zero modes (MZMs) vanishes when their coupling energy $ε_M\to 0$. Motivated by the intrinsic nature of nonlocality of the MZMs, we revisit this important problem and propose an experimental scheme to demonstrate the nonvanishing cross correlation even at the limit $ε_M\to 0$. The proposed scheme employs the Andreev-process-associated branch circuit currents, which are theoretically obtained by applying a decomposition analysis for the total currents while in practical measurement, are accessible directly. For different bias voltage setup, we find intriguing results of both negative and positive correlations and carry out simple physical understanding using a quantum jump technique. Importantly, combining together with the evidence of the zero-bias-peak of conductance, the nonlocal cross correlation predicted in this work can help to definitely confirm the existence of the nonlocal MZMs.

Hybrid Satellite-UAV-Terrestrial Networks for 6G Ubiquitous Coverage: A Maritime Communications Perspective

In the coming smart ocean era, reliable and efficient communications are crucial for promoting a variety of maritime activities. Current maritime communication networks (MCNs) mainly rely on marine satellites and on-shore base stations (BSs). The former generally provides limited transmission rate, while the latter lacks wide-area coverage capability. Due to these facts, the state-of-the-art MCN falls far behind terrestrial fifth-generation (5G) networks. To fill up the gap in the coming sixth-generation (6G) era, we explore the benefit of deployable BSs for maritime coverage enhancement. Both unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and mobile vessels are used to configure deployable BSs. This leads to a hierarchical satellite-UAV-terrestrial network on the ocean. We address the joint link scheduling and rate adaptation problem for this hybrid network, to minimize the total energy consumption with quality of service (QoS) guarantees. Different from previous studies, we use only the large-scale channel state information (CSI), which is location-dependent and thus can be predicted through the position information of each UAV/vessel based on its specific trajectory/shipping lane. The problem is shown to be an NP-hard mixed integer nonlinear programming problem with a group of hidden non-linear equality constraints. We solve it suboptimally by using Min-Max transformation and iterative problem relaxation, leading to a process-oriented joint link scheduling and rate adaptation scheme. As observed by simulations, the scheme can provide agile on-demand coverage for all users with much reduced system overhead and a polynomial computation complexity. Moreover, it can achieve a prominent performance close to the optimal solution.

Auto-Exposure Fusion for Single-Image Shadow Removal

Shadow removal is still a challenging task due to its inherent background-dependent and spatial-variant properties, leading to unknown and diverse shadow patterns. Even powerful state-of-the-art deep neural networks could hardly recover traceless shadow-removed background. This paper proposes a new solution for this task by formulating it as an exposure fusion problem to address the challenges. Intuitively, we can first estimate multiple over-exposure images w.r.t. the input image to let the shadow regions in these images have the same color with shadow-free areas in the input image. Then, we fuse the original input with the over-exposure images to generate the final shadow-free counterpart. Nevertheless, the spatial-variant property of the shadow requires the fusion to be sufficiently `smart', that is, it should automatically select proper over-exposure pixels from different images to make the final output natural. To address this challenge, we propose the shadow-aware FusionNet that takes the shadow image as input to generate fusion weight maps across all the over-exposure images. Moreover, we propose the boundary-aware RefineNet to eliminate the remaining shadow trace further. We conduct extensive experiments on the ISTD, ISTD+, and SRD datasets to validate our method's effectiveness and show better performance in shadow regions and comparable performance in non-shadow regions over the state-of-the-art methods. We release the model and code in https://github.com/tsingqguo/exposure-fusion-shadow-removal.

Improving prediction of the terrestrial water storage anomalies during the GRACE and GRACE-FO gap with Bayesian convolutional neural networks

The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite and its successor GRACE Follow-On (GRACE-FO) provide valuable and accurate observations of terrestrial water storage anomalies (TWSAs) at a global scale. However, there is an approximately one-year observation gap of TWSAs between GRACE and GRACE-FO. This poses a challenge for practical applications, as discontinuity in the TWSA observations may introduce significant biases and uncertainties in the hydrological model predictions and consequently mislead decision making. To tackle this challenge, a Bayesian convolutional neural network (BCNN) driven by climatic data is proposed in this study to bridge this gap at a global scale. Enhanced by integrating recent advances in deep learning, including the attention mechanisms and the residual and dense connections, BCNN can automatically and efficiently extract important features for TWSA predictions from multi-source input data. The predicted TWSAs are compared to the hydrological model outputs and three recent TWSA prediction products. The comparison suggests the superior performance of BCNN in providing improved predictions of TWSAs during the gap in particular in the relatively arid regions. The BCNN's ability to identify the extreme dry and wet events during the gap period is further discussed and comprehensively demonstrated by comparing with the precipitation anomalies, drought index, ground/surface water levels. Results indicate that BCNN is capable of offering a reliable solution to maintain the TWSA data continuity and quantify the impacts of climate extremes during the gap.

5G Embraces Satellites for 6G Ubiquitous IoT: Basic Models for Integrated Satellite Terrestrial Networks

Terrestrial communication networks mainly focus on users in urban areas but have poor coverage performance in harsh environments, such as mountains, deserts, and oceans. Satellites can be exploited to extend the coverage of terrestrial fifth-generation (5G) networks. However, satellites are restricted by their high latency and relatively low data rate. Consequently, the integration of terrestrial and satellite components has been widely studied, to take advantage of both sides and enable seamless broadband coverage. Due to the significant differences between satellite communications (SatComs) and terrestrial communications (TerComs) in terms of channel fading, transmission delay, mobility, and coverage performance, the establishment of an efficient hybrid satellite-terrestrial network (HSTN) still faces many challenges. In general, it is difficult to decompose a HSTN into a sum of separate satellite and terrestrial links due to the complicated coupling relationships therein. To uncover the complete picture of HSTNs, we regard the HSTN as a combination of basic cooperative models that contain the main traits of satellite-terrestrial integration but are much simpler and thus more tractable than the large-scale heterogeneous HSTNs. In particular, we present three basic cooperative models, i.e., model X, model L, and model V, and provide a survey of the state-of-the-art technologies for each of them. We discuss future research directions towards establishing a cell-free, hierarchical, decoupled HSTN. We also outline open issues to envision an agile, smart, and secure HSTN for the sixth-generation (6G) ubiquitous Internet of Things (IoT).

Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Communication Networks for the Maritime Internet of Things: Key Technologies, Opportunities, and Challenges

With the rapid development of marine activities, there has been an increasing number of maritime mobile terminals, as well as a growing demand for high-speed and ultra-reliable maritime communications to keep them connected. Traditionally, the maritime Internet of Things (IoT) is enabled by maritime satellites. However, satellites are seriously restricted by their high latency and relatively low data rate. As an alternative, shore & island-based base stations (BSs) can be built to extend the coverage of terrestrial networks using fourth-generation (4G), fifth-generation (5G), and beyond 5G services. Unmanned aerial vehicles can also be exploited to serve as aerial maritime BSs. Despite of all these approaches, there are still open issues for an efficient maritime communication network (MCN). For example, due to the complicated electromagnetic propagation environment, the limited geometrically available BS sites, and rigorous service demands from mission-critical applications, conventional communication and networking theories and methods should be tailored for maritime scenarios. Towards this end, we provide a survey on the demand for maritime communications, the state-of-the-art MCNs, and key technologies for enhancing transmission efficiency, extending network coverage, and provisioning maritime-specific services. Future challenges in developing an environment-aware, service-driven, and integrated satellite-air-ground MCN to be smart enough to utilize external auxiliary information, e.g., sea state and atmosphere conditions, are also discussed.

Multi-Domain Multi-Task Rehearsal for Lifelong Learning

Rehearsal, seeking to remind the model by storing old knowledge in lifelong learning, is one of the most effective ways to mitigate catastrophic forgetting, i.e., biased forgetting of previous knowledge when moving to new tasks. However, the old tasks of the most previous rehearsal-based methods suffer from the unpredictable domain shift when training the new task. This is because these methods always ignore two significant factors. First, the Data Imbalance between the new task and old tasks that makes the domain of old tasks prone to shift. Second, the Task Isolation among all tasks will make the domain shift toward unpredictable directions; To address the unpredictable domain shift, in this paper, we propose Multi-Domain Multi-Task (MDMT) rehearsal to train the old tasks and new task parallelly and equally to break the isolation among tasks. Specifically, a two-level angular margin loss is proposed to encourage the intra-class/task compactness and inter-class/task discrepancy, which keeps the model from domain chaos. In addition, to further address domain shift of the old tasks, we propose an optional episodic distillation loss on the memory to anchor the knowledge for each old task. Experiments on benchmark datasets validate the proposed approach can effectively mitigate the unpredictable domain shift.

Weakly-Supervised Arbitrary-Shaped Text Detection with Expectation-Maximization Algorithm

Arbitrary-shaped text detection is an important and challenging task in computer vision. Most existing methods require heavy data labeling efforts to produce polygon-level text region labels for supervised training. In order to reduce the cost in data labeling, we study weakly-supervised arbitrary-shaped text detection for combining various weak supervision forms (e.g., image-level tags, coarse, loose and tight bounding boxes), which are far easier for annotation. We propose an Expectation-Maximization (EM) based weakly-supervised learning framework to train an accurate arbitrary-shaped text detector using only a small amount of polygon-level annotated data combined with a large amount of weakly annotated data. Meanwhile, we propose a contour-based arbitrary-shaped text detector, which is suitable for incorporating weakly-supervised learning. Extensive experiments on three arbitrary-shaped text benchmarks (CTW1500, Total-Text and ICDAR-ArT) show that (1) using only 10% strongly annotated data and 90% weakly annotated data, our method yields comparable performance to state-of-the-art methods, (2) with 100% strongly annotated data, our method outperforms existing methods on all three benchmarks. We will make the weakly annotated datasets publicly available in the future.

Watch out! Motion is Blurring the Vision of Your Deep Neural Networks

The state-of-the-art deep neural networks (DNNs) are vulnerable against adversarial examples with additive random-like noise perturbations. While such examples are hardly found in the physical world, the image blurring effect caused by object motion, on the other hand, commonly occurs in practice, making the study of which greatly important especially for the widely adopted real-time image processing tasks (e.g., object detection, tracking). In this paper, we initiate the first step to comprehensively investigate the potential hazards of the blur effect for DNN, caused by object motion. We propose a novel adversarial attack method that can generate visually natural motion-blurred adversarial examples, named motion-based adversarial blur attack (ABBA). To this end, we first formulate the kernel-prediction-based attack where an input image is convolved with kernels in a pixel-wise way, and the misclassification capability is achieved by tuning the kernel weights. To generate visually more natural and plausible examples, we further propose the saliency-regularized adversarial kernel prediction, where the salient region serves as a moving object, and the predicted kernel is regularized to achieve naturally visual effects. Besides, the attack is further enhanced by adaptively tuning the translations of object and background. A comprehensive evaluation on the NeurIPS'17 adversarial competition dataset demonstrates the effectiveness of ABBA by considering various kernel sizes, translations, and regions. The in-depth study further confirms that our method shows more effective penetrating capability to the state-of-the-art GAN-based deblurring mechanisms compared with other blurring methods. We release the code to https://github.com/tsingqguo/ABBA.

EfficientDeRain: Learning Pixel-wise Dilation Filtering for High-Efficiency Single-Image Deraining

Single-image deraining is rather challenging due to the unknown rain model. Existing methods often make specific assumptions of the rain model, which can hardly cover many diverse circumstances in the real world, making them have to employ complex optimization or progressive refinement. This, however, significantly affects these methods' efficiency and effectiveness for many efficiency-critical applications. To fill this gap, in this paper, we regard the single-image deraining as a general image-enhancing problem and originally propose a model-free deraining method, i.e., EfficientDeRain, which is able to process a rainy image within 10~ms (i.e., around 6~ms on average), over 80 times faster than the state-of-the-art method (i.e., RCDNet), while achieving similar de-rain effects. We first propose the novel pixel-wise dilation filtering. In particular, a rainy image is filtered with the pixel-wise kernels estimated from a kernel prediction network, by which suitable multi-scale kernels for each pixel can be efficiently predicted. Then, to eliminate the gap between synthetic and real data, we further propose an effective data augmentation method (i.e., RainMix) that helps to train network for real rainy image handling. We perform comprehensive evaluation on both synthetic and real-world rainy datasets to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our method. We release the model and code in https://github.com/tsingqguo/efficientderain.git.

Delay Characterization of Mobile Edge Computing for 6G Time-Sensitive Services

Time-sensitive services (TSSs) have been widely envisioned for future sixth generation (6G) wireless communication networks. Due to its inherent low-latency advantage, mobile edge computing (MEC) will be an indispensable enabler for TSSs. The random characteristics of the delay experienced by users are key metrics reflecting the quality of service (QoS) of TSSs. Most existing studies on MEC have focused on the average delay. Only a few research efforts have been devoted to other random delay characteristics, such as the delay bound violation probability and the probability distribution of the delay, by decoupling the transmission and computation processes of MEC. However, if these two processes could not be decoupled, the coupling will bring new challenges to analyzing the random delay characteristics. In this paper, an MEC system with a limited computation buffer at the edge server is considered. In this system, the transmission process and computation process form a feedback loop and could not be decoupled. We formulate a discrete-time two-stage tandem queueing system. Then, by using the matrix-geometric method, we obtain the estimation methods for the random delay characteristics, including the probability distribution of the delay, the delay bound violation probability, the average delay and the delay standard deviation. The estimation methods are verified by simulations. The random delay characteristics are analyzed by numerical experiments, which unveil the coupling relationship between the transmission process and computation process for MEC. These results will largely facilitate elaborate allocation of communication and computation resources to improve the QoS of TSSs.

A Unified Framework for Adjustable Robust Optimization with Endogenous Uncertainty

This work proposes a framework for multistage adjustable robust optimization that unifies the treatment of three different types of endogenous uncertainty, where decisions, respectively, (i) alter the uncertainty set, (ii) affect the materialization of uncertain parameters, and (iii) determine the time when the true values of uncertain parameters are observed. We provide a systematic analysis of the different types of endogenous uncertainty and highlight the connection between optimization under endogenous uncertainty and active learning. We consider decision-dependent polyhedral uncertainty sets and propose a decision rule approach that incorporates both continuous and binary recourse, including recourse decisions that affect the uncertainty set. The proposed method enables the modeling of decision-dependent nonanticipativity and results in a tractable reformulation of the problem. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach in computational experiments that cover a range of applications, including plant redesign, maintenance planning with inspections, optimizing revision points in capacity planning, and production scheduling with active parameter estimation. The results show significant benefits from the proper modeling of endogenous uncertainty and active learning.

DeepRhythm: Exposing DeepFakes with Attentional Visual Heartbeat Rhythms

As the GAN-based face image and video generation techniques, widely known as DeepFakes, have become more and more matured and realistic, there comes a pressing and urgent demand for effective DeepFakes detectors. Motivated by the fact that remote visual photoplethysmography (PPG) is made possible by monitoring the minuscule periodic changes of skin color due to blood pumping through the face, we conjecture that normal heartbeat rhythms found in the real face videos will be disrupted or even entirely broken in a DeepFake video, making it a potentially powerful indicator for DeepFake detection. In this work, we propose DeepRhythm, a DeepFake detection technique that exposes DeepFakes by monitoring the heartbeat rhythms. DeepRhythm utilizes dual-spatial-temporal attention to adapt to dynamically changing face and fake types. Extensive experiments on FaceForensics++ and DFDC-preview datasets have confirmed our conjecture and demonstrated not only the effectiveness, but also the generalization capability of \emph{DeepRhythm} over different datasets by various DeepFakes generation techniques and multifarious challenging degradations.

Multistage Robust Mixed-Integer Optimization Under Endogenous Uncertainty

Endogenous, i.e. decision-dependent, uncertainty has received increased interest in the stochastic programming community. In the robust optimization context, however, it has rarely been considered. This work addresses multistage robust mixed-integer optimization with decision-dependent uncertainty sets. The proposed framework allows us to consider both continuous and integer recourse, including recourse decisions that affect the uncertainty set. We derive a tractable reformulation of the problem by leveraging recent advances in the construction of nonlinear decision rules, and introduce discontinuous piecewise linear decision rules for continuous recourse. Computational experiments are performed to gain insights on the impact of endogenous uncertainty, the benefit of discrete recourse, and computational performance. Our results indicate that the level of conservatism in the solution can be significantly reduced if endogenous uncertainty and mixed-integer recourse are properly modeled.
