Jointly Modeling Aspect and Sentiment with Dynamic Heterogeneous Graph Neural Networks

Target-Based Sentiment Analysis aims to detect the opinion aspects (aspect extraction) and the sentiment polarities (sentiment detection) towards them. Both the previous pipeline and integrated methods fail to precisely model the innate connection between these two objectives. In this paper, we propose a novel dynamic heterogeneous graph to jointly model the two objectives in an explicit way. Both the ordinary words and sentiment labels are treated as nodes in the heterogeneous graph, so that the aspect words can interact with the sentiment information. The graph is initialized with multiple types of dependencies, and dynamically modified during real-time prediction. Experiments on the benchmark datasets show that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art models. Further analysis demonstrates that our model obtains significant performance gain on the challenging instances under multiple-opinion aspects and no-opinion aspect situations.

Dynamical universality classes towards an infinite temperature state

Dynamical universality is the observation that the dynamical properties of different systems might exhibit universal behavior that are independent of the system details. In this paper, we study the long-time dynamics of an one-dimensional noisy quantum magnetic model, and find that even though the system are inevitably driven to an infinite temperature state, the relaxation dynamics towards such featureless state can be highly nontrivial and universal. The effect of various mode-coupling mechanisms (external potential, disorder, interaction, and the interplay between them) as well as the conservation law on the long-time dynamics of the systems have been studied, and their relevance with current ultracold atomic experiments have been discussed.

Posterior Contraction and Credible Sets for Filaments of Regression Functions

A filament consists of local maximizers of a smooth function $f$ when moving in a certain direction. A filamentary structure is an important feature of the shape of an object and is also considered as an important lower dimensional characterization of multivariate data. There have been some recent theoretical studies of filaments in the nonparametric kernel density estimation context. This paper supplements the current literature in two ways. First, we provide a Bayesian approach to the filament estimation in regression context and study the posterior contraction rates using a finite random series of B-splines basis. Compared with the kernel-estimation method, this has a theoretical advantage as the bias can be better controlled when the function is smoother, which allows obtaining better rates. Assuming that $f: \mathbb{R}^2 \mapsto \mathbb{R}$ belongs to an isotropic Hölder class of order $α\geq 4$, with the optimal choice of smoothing parameters, the posterior contraction rates for the filament points on some appropriately defined integral curves and for the Hausdorff distance of the filament are both $(n/\log n)^{(2-α)/(2(1+α))}$. Secondly, we provide a way to construct a credible set with sufficient frequentist coverage for the filaments. We demonstrate the success of our proposed method in simulations and one application to earthquake data.

Low temperature specific heat of 12442-type KCa_2Fe_4As_4F_2 single crystals

Low-temperature specific heat (SH) is measured for the 12442-type KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ single crystal under different magnetic fields. A clear SH jump with the height of $ΔC/T|_{T_c}$ = 130 mJ/mol K$^2$ is observed at the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. It is found that the electronic SH coefficient $Δγ(H)$ quickly increases when the field is in the low-field region below 3 T and then considerably slows down the increase with a further increase in the field, which indicates a rather strong anisotropy or multi-gap feature with a small minimum in the superconducting gap(s). The temperature-dependent SH data indicates the presence of the $T^2$ term, which supplies further information and supports the picture with a line-nodal gap structure. Moreover, the onset point of the SH transition remains almost unchanged under the field as high as 9 T, which is similar to that observed in cuprates, and placed this system in the middle between the BCS limit and the Bose-Einstein condensation.

Electric dipole moments of neutron and heavy quarks in the B-L symmetric MSSM

The searching for the electric dipole moments (EDMs) of neutron ($d_n$), $b$ quark ($d_b$) and $c$ quark ($d_c$) gives strict upper bounds on these quantities. And recently, new upper bounds on $d_b$, $d_c$ are obtained by the strict limit on $d_n$. The models of new physics (NP) with additional CP-violating (CPV) sources are constrained strictly by these EDMs. In this work, we focus on the CPV effects on these EDMs in the minimal supersymmetric extension (MSSM) of the SM with local $B-L$ gauge symmetry (B-LSSM). The contributions from one-loop and some two-loop diagrams to the quark EDM are given in general form, which can also be used in the calculation of quark EDM in other models of NP. Considering the constrains from updated experimental data, the numerical results show that the two-loop corrections can make important contributions to these EDMs. Compared with the MSSM, the effects of new CPV phases and new parameters in the B-LSSM on these EDMs are also explored.

Partial Differential Chow Forms and a Type of Partial Differential Chow varieties

We first present an intersection theory of partial differential varieties with quasi-generic differential hypersurfaces. Then based on the generic intersection theory, we define the partial differential Chow form for an irreducible partial differential variety $V$ of Kolchin polynomial $ω_V(t)=(d+1){t+m\choose m}-{t+m-s\choose m}$. And we establish for the partial differential Chow form most of the basic properties of the ordinary differential Chow form. Furthermore, we prove the existence of a type of partial differential Chow varieties.

Rainbow triangles in arc-colored tournaments

Let $T_{n}$ be an arc-colored tournament of order $n$. The maximum monochromatic indegree $Δ^{-mon}(T_{n})$ (resp. outdegree $Δ^{+mon}(T_{n})$) of $T_{n}$ is the maximum number of in-arcs (resp. out-arcs) of a same color incident to a vertex of $T_{n}$. The irregularity $i(T_{n})$ of $T_{n}$ is the maximum difference between the indegree and outdegree of a vertex of $T_{n}$. A subdigraph $H$ of an arc-colored digraph $D$ is called rainbow if each pair of arcs in $H$ have distinct colors. In this paper, we show that each vertex $v$ in an arc-colored tournament $T_{n}$ with $Δ^{-mon}(T_n)\leqΔ^{+mon}(T_n)$ is contained in at least $\frac{δ(v)(n-δ(v)-i(T_n))}{2}-[Δ^{-mon}(T_{n})(n-1)+Δ^{+mon}(T_{n})d^+(v)]$ rainbow triangles, where $δ(v)=\min\{d^+(v), d^-(v)\}$. We also give some maximum monochromatic degree conditions for $T_{n}$ to contain rainbow triangles, and to contain rainbow triangles passing through a given vertex. Finally, we present some examples showing that some of the conditions in our results are best possible. Keywords: arc-colored tournament, rainbow triangle, maximum monochromatic indegree (outdegree), irregularity

Kosterlitz-Thouless Melting of Magnetic Order in the Triangular Quantum Ising Material TmMgGaO$_4$

Frustrated magnets host the promises of material realizations of new paradigm of quantum matter, while direct comparison of unbiased model calculations with experimental measurements is still very challenging. Here, we design and implement a protocol of employing many-body computation methodologies for accurate model calculation -- both equilibrium and dynamical properties -- of a frustrated rare-earth magnet TmMgGaO$_4$ (TMGO), which perfectly explains the corresponding experimental findings. Our results confirm TMGO is an ideal realization of triangular-lattice Ising model with an intrinsic transverse field. The magnetic order of TMGO is predicted to melt through two successive Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) phase transitions, with a floating KT phase in between. The dynamical spectra calculated suggest remnant images of a vanishing magnetic stripe order that represent vortex-antivortex pairs, resembling rotons in a superfluid helium film. TMGO therefore constitutes a rare quantum magnet for realizing KT physics and we further propose experimental detections of its intriguing properties.

Federated Heavy Hitters Discovery with Differential Privacy

The discovery of heavy hitters (most frequent items) in user-generated data streams drives improvements in the app and web ecosystems, but can incur substantial privacy risks if not done with care. To address these risks, we propose a distributed and privacy-preserving algorithm for discovering the heavy hitters in a population of user-generated data streams. We leverage the sampling and thresholding properties of our distributed algorithm to prove that it is inherently differentially private, without requiring additional noise. We also examine the trade-off between privacy and utility, and show that our algorithm provides excellent utility while also achieving strong privacy guarantees. A significant advantage of this approach is that it eliminates the need to centralize raw data while also avoiding the significant loss in utility incurred by local differential privacy. We validate our findings both theoretically, using worst-case analyses, and practically, using a Twitter dataset with 1.6M tweets and over 650k users. Finally, we carefully compare our approach to Apple's local differential privacy method for discovering heavy hitters.

Probing the EVH limit of supersymmetric AdS black holes

Extremal black holes in general dimensions are well known to contain an AdS$_2$ factor in their near-horizon geometries. If the extremal limit is taken in conjunction with a specific vanishing horizon limit, the so-called Extremal Vanishing Horizon (EVH) limit, the AdS$_2$ factor lifts to a locally AdS$_3$ factor with a pinching angular direction. In this paper, we study the EVH limit of asymptotically AdS black holes which preserve some supersymmetry. The primary example we consider is the 1/16$^{\rm th}$ BPS asymptotically AdS$_5$ black hole, whose EVH limit has an AdS$_3$ factor in its near-horizon geometry. We also consider the near-EVH limit of this black hole, in which the near-horizon geometry instead contains an extremal BTZ factor. We employ recent results on the large-$N$ limit of the superconformal index of the dual CFT$_4$ to understand the emergence of a CFT$_2$ in the IR of the CFT$_4$, which is the field theory dual to the emergence of the locally AdS$_3$ factor in the near-horizon geometry. In particular, we show that the inverse Laplace transform of the superconformal index, yielding the black hole entropy, becomes equivalent to the derivation of a Cardy formula for the dual CFT$_2$. Finally, we examine the EVH limit of supersymmetric black holes in other dimensions.

Chiral Magnetic Effects in Nuclear Collisions

The interplay of quantum anomalies with strong magnetic field and vorticity in chiral systems could lead to novel transport phenomena, such as the chiral magnetic effect (CME), the chiral magnetic wave (CMW) and the chiral vortical effect (CVE). In high-energy nuclear collisions, these chiral effects may survive the expansion of a quark-gluon plasma fireball and be detected in experiments. The experimental searches for the CME, the CMW and the CVE, have aroused extensive interest over the past couple of decades. The main goal of this article is to review latest experimental progress in search for these novel chiral transport phenomena at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at BNL and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Future programs to help reduce uncertainties and facilitate the interpretation of the data are also discussed.

Ductile and brittle crack-tip response in equimolar refractory high-entropy alloys

Understanding the strengthening and deformation mechanisms in refractory high-entropy alloys (HEAs), proposed as new high-temperature material, is required for improving their typically insufficient room-temperature ductility. Here, density-functional theory simulations and a continuum mechanics analysis were conducted to systematically investigate the competition between cleavage decohesion and dislocation emission from a crack tip in the body-centered cubic refractory HEAs HfNbTiZr, MoNbTaVW, MoNbTaW, MoNbTiV, and NbTiVZr. This crack-tip competition is evaluated for tensile loading and a totality of 15 crack configurations and slip systems. Our results predict that dislocation plasticity at the crack tip is generally unfavorable -- although the competition is close for some crack orientations, suggesting intrinsic brittleness and low crack-tip fracture toughness in these five HEAs at zero temperature. Fluctuations in local alloy composition, investigated for HfNbTiZr, can locally reduce the resistance to dislocation emission for a slip system relative to the configuration average of that slip system, but do not change the dominant crack-tip response. In the case of single-crystal MoNbTaW, where an experimental, room-temperature fracture-toughness value is available for a crack on a \{100\} plane, theoretical and experimental results agree favorably. Factors that may limit the agreement are discussed. We survey the effect of material anisotropy on preferred crack tip orientations, which are found to be alloy specific. Mixed-mode loadings are found to shift the competition in favor of cleavage or dislocation nucleation, depending on crack configuration and amplified by the effect of material anisotropy on crack tip stresses.

Chinese cities' air quality pattern and correlation

Air quality impacts people's health and daily life, affects the sensitive ecosystems, and even restrains a country's development. By collecting and processing the time series data of Air Quality Index (AQI) of 363 cities of China from Jan. 2015 to Mar. 2019, we dedicated to characterize the universal patterns, the clustering and correlation of air quality of different cities by using the methods of complex network and time series analysis. The main results are as follows: 1) The Air Quality Network of China (AQNC) is constructed by using the Planar Maximally Filtered Graph (PMFG) method. The geographical distances on the correlation of air quality of different cities have been studied, it is found that 100 km is a critical distance for strong correlation. 2) Seven communities of AQNC have been detected, and their patterns have been analyzed by taking into account the Hurst exponent and climate environment, it is shown that the seven communities are reasonable, and they are significantly influenced by the climate factors, such as monsoon, precipitation, geographical regions, etc. 3) The motifs of air quality time series of seven communities have been investigated by the visibility graph, for some communities, the evolutionary patterns of the motifs are a bit stable, and they have the long-term memory effects. While for others, there are no stable patterns.

Optimal Linear Instrumental Variables Approximations

This paper studies the identification and estimation of the optimal linear approximation of a structural regression function. The parameter in the linear approximation is called the Optimal Linear Instrumental Variables Approximation (OLIVA). This paper shows that a necessary condition for standard inference on the OLIVA is also sufficient for the existence of an IV estimand in a linear model. The instrument in the IV estimand is unknown and may not be identified. A Two-Step IV (TSIV) estimator based on Tikhonov regularization is proposed, which can be implemented by standard regression routines. We establish the asymptotic normality of the TSIV estimator assuming neither completeness nor identification of the instrument. As an important application of our analysis, we robustify the classical Hausman test for exogeneity against misspecification of the linear structural model. We also discuss extensions to weighted least squares criteria. Monte Carlo simulations suggest an excellent finite sample performance for the proposed inferences. Finally, in an empirical application estimating the elasticity of intertemporal substitution (EIS) with US data, we obtain TSIV estimates that are much larger than their standard IV counterparts, with our robust Hausman test failing to reject the null hypothesis of exogeneity of real interest rates.

Isotonic regression for metallic microstructure data: estimation and testing under order restrictions

Investigating the main determinants of the mechanical performance of metals is not a simple task. Already known physical inspired qualitative relations between 2D microstructure characteristics and 3D mechanical properties can act as the starting point of the investigation. Isotonic regression allows to take into account ordering relations and leads to more efficient and accurate results when the underlying assumptions actually hold. The main goal in this paper is to test order relations in a model inspired by a materials science application. The statistical estimation procedure is described considering three different scenarios according to the knowledge of the variances: known variance ratio, completely unknown variances, variances under order restrictions. New likelihood ratio tests are developed in the last two cases. Both parametric and non-parametric bootstrap approaches are developed for finding the distribution of the test statistics under the null hypothesis. Finally an application on the relation between Geometrically Necessary Dislocations and number of observed microstructure precipitations is shown.

Visual Exploration of Movement Relatedness for Multi-species Ecology Analysis

Advances in GPS telemetry technology have enabled analysis of animal movement in open areas. Ecologists today are utilizing modern analytic tools to study animal behaviors from large quantity of GPS coordinates. Analytic tools with automatic event extraction functionality can be used to investigate potential interactions between animals by locating relevant segments in movement trajectories. However, such automation can easily overlook the spatial, temporal, social context as well as potential data problems. To this end, this paper explores the visual presentations that also clarify the spatial-temporal contexts, social surroudings, as well as underlying data uncertainties of multi-species animal interactions. The outcome system presents the proximity-based, time-varying relatedness between animal entities through pairwise (PW) or individual-to-group (i-G) perspectives. Focusing on the relational aspects, we employ both static depictions and animations to communicate the travelling of individuals. Our contributions are a novel visualization system that helps investigate the subtle variations of long term spatial-temporal relatedness while considering small group patterns. Our evaluation with movement ecologists shows that the system gives them quick access to valuable clues in discovering insights into multi-species movements and signs of potential interactions.

Controlling the dopant profile for SRH suppression at low current densities in $λ\approx$ 1330nm GaInAsP light-emitting diodes

The quantum efficiency of double hetero-junction light-emitting diodes (LEDs) can be significantly enhanced at low current density by tailoring the spatial profile of dopants to suppress Shockley-Read-Hall (SRH) recombination. To demonstrate this effect we model, design, grow, fabricate, and test a GaInAsP LED ($λ\approx$ 1330nm) with an unconventional dopant profile. Compared against that of our control design, which is a conventional $n^+$-$n$-$p^+$ double hetero-junction LED, the dopant profile near the $n$-$p^+$ hetero-structure of the new design displaces the built-in electric field in such a way as to suppress the J02 space charge recombination current. The design principle generalizes to other material systems and could be applicable to efforts to observe and exploit electro-luminescent refrigeration at practical power densities.

Unirational Differential Curves and Differential Rational Parametrizations

In this paper, we study unirational differential curves and the corresponding differential rational parametrizations. We first investigate basic properties of proper differential rational parametrizations for unirational differential curves. Then we show that the implicitization problem of proper linear differential rational parametric equations can be solved by means of differential resultants. Furthermore, for linear differential curves, we give an algorithm to determine whether an implicitly given linear differential curve is unirational and, in the affirmative case, to compute a proper differential rational parametrization for the differential curve.
