Possible canonical distributions for finite systems with nonadditive energy

It is shown that a small system in thermodynamic equilibrium with a finite thermostat can have a q-exponential probability distribution which closely depends on the energy nonextensivity and the particle number of the thermostat. The distribution function will reduce to the exponential one at the thermodynamic limit. However, the nonextensivity of the system should not be neglected.

Coherent transport on Apollonian networks and continuous-time quantum walks

We study the coherent exciton transport on Apollonian networks generated by simple iterative rules. The coherent exciton dynamics is modeled by continuous-time quantum walks and we calculate the transition probabilities between two nodes of the networks. We find that the transport depends on the initial nodes of the excitation. For networks less than the second generation the coherent transport shows perfect revivals when the initial excitation starts at the central node. For networks of higher generation, the transport only shows partial revivals. Moreover, we find that the excitation is most likely to be found at the initial nodes while the coherent transport to other nodes has a very low probability. In the long time limit, the transition probabilities show characteristic patterns with identical values of limiting probabilities. Finally, the dynamics of quantum transport are compared with the classical transport modeled by continuous-time random walks.

Chiral Gravity in Three Dimensions

Three dimensional Einstein gravity with negative cosmological constant -1/\ell^2 deformed by a gravitational Chern-Simons action with coefficient 1/μis studied in an asymptotically AdS_3 spacetime. It is argued to violate unitary or positivity for generic μdue to negative-energy massive gravitons. However at the critical value μ\ell=1, the massive gravitons disappear and BTZ black holes all have mass and angular momentum related by \ell M=J. The corresponding chiral quantum theory of gravity is conjectured to exist and be dual to a purely right-moving boundary CFT with central charges (c_L,c_R)=(0,3\ell /G).

Warped AdS_3 Black Holes

Three dimensional topologically massive gravity (TMG) with a negative cosmological constant -\ell^{-2} and positive Newton constant G admits an AdS_3 vacuum solution for any value of the graviton mass μ. These are all known to be perturbatively unstable except at the recently explored chiral point μ\ell=1. However we show herein that for every value of μ\ell< 3 there are two other (potentially stable) vacuum solutions given by SL(2,R)x U(1)-invariant warped AdS_3 geometries, with a timelike or spacelike U(1) isometry. Critical behavior occurs at μ\ell=3, where the warping transitions from a stretching to a squashing, and there are a pair of warped solutions with a null U(1) isometry. For μ\ell>3, there are known warped black hole solutions which are asymptotic to warped AdS_3. We show that these black holes are discrete quotients of warped AdS_3 just as BTZ black holes are discrete quotients of ordinary AdS_3. Moreover new solutions of this type, relevant to any theory with warped AdS_3 solutions, are exhibited. Finally we note that the black hole thermodynamics is consistent with the hypothesis that, for μ\ell>3, the warped AdS_3 ground state of TMG is holographically dual to a 2D boundary CFT with central charges c_R={15(μ\ell)^2+81\over Gμ((μ\ell)^2+27)} and c_L={12 μ\ell^2\over G((μ\ell)^2+27)}.

Collective excitations in one-dimensional ultracold Fermi gases: a comparative study

Time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) is a powerful tool to study the non-equilibrium dynamics of inhomogeneous interacting many-body systems. Here we show that the simple adiabatic local-spin-density approximation for the time-dependent exchange-correlation potential is surprisingly accurate in describing collective density and spin dynamics in strongly correlated one-dimensional ultracold Fermi gases. Our conclusions are based on extensive comparisons between our TDDFT results and accurate results based on the adaptive time-dependent density-matrix renormalization-group method.

Comment on "Cosmological Topological Massive Gravitons and Photons"

In a recent paper (arXiv: 0801.4566) it was shown that all global energy eigenstates of asymptotically $AdS_3$ chiral gravity have non-negative energy at the linearized level. This result was questioned (arXiv: 0803.3998) by Carlip, Deser, Waldron and Wise (CDWW), who work on the Poincare patch. They exhibit a linearized solution of chiral gravity and claim that it has negative energy and is smooth at the boundary. We show that the solution of CDWW is smooth only on that part of the boundary of $AdS_3$ included in the Poincare patch. Extended to global $AdS_3$, it is divergent at the boundary point not included in the Poincare patch. Hence it is consistent with the results of (arXiv: 0801.4566).

System size dependence of two-particle angular correlations in p+p, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions

We present a systematic study of two-particle angular correlations in p+p, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions over a broad range of pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle. The PHOBOS detector has a uniquely large angular coverage for inclusive charged particles, which allows for the study of correlations on both long- and short-range scales. A complex two-dimensional correlation structure emerges which is interpreted in the context of a cluster model. The cluster size and its decay width are extracted from the two-particle pseudorapidity correlation function. The cluster size found in semi-central Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions is comparable to that found in p+p but a non-trivial increase of cluster size with decreasing centrality is observed. Moreover, the comparison between Cu+Cu and Au+Au systems shows an interesting scaling of the cluster size with the measured fraction of total cross section (which is related to $b/2R$), suggesting a geometric origin. These results should provide insight into the hadronization stage of the hot and dense medium created in heavy ion collisions.

Non-Supersymmetric Attractors in Symmetric Coset Spaces

We present a method of constructing generic single-centered and multi-centered extremal black hole solutions in a large class of 4D N=2 supergravities coupled to vector-multiplets with cubic prepotentials. The method is applicable to models for which the 3D moduli spaces obtained via c*-map are symmetric coset spaces. The attractor solutions are generated by certain nilpotent elements in the coset algebra. We present explicit computations in 4D N=2 supergravity coupled to one vector-multiplet, whose 3D moduli space is the symmetric coset space G_{2(2)}/SL(2,R)^2. The non-supersymmetric multi-centered black holes in this model are found to lack the intricate moduli space of bound configurations that are typical of the supersymmetric case.

Non-Supersymmetric Attractor Flow in Symmetric Spaces

We derive extremal black hole solutions for a variety of four dimensional models which, after Kaluza-Klein reduction, admit a description in terms of 3D gravity coupled to a sigma model with symmetric target space. The solutions are in correspondence with certain nilpotent generators of the isometry group. In particular, we provide the exact solution for a non-BPS black hole with generic charges and asymptotic moduli in N=2 supergravity coupled to one vector multiplet. Multi-centered solutions can also be generated with this technique. It is shown that the non-supersymmetric solutions lack the intricate moduli space of bound configurations that are typical of the supersymmetric case.

Growing small-world networks based on a modified BA model

We propose a simple growing model for the evolution of small-world networks. It is introduced as a modified BA model in which all the edges connected to the new nodes are made locally to the creator and its nearest neighbors. It is found that this model can produce small-world networks with power-law degree distributions. Properties of our model, including the degree distribution, clustering, and the average path length are compared with that of the BA model. Since most real networks are both scale-free and small-world networks, our model may provide a satisfactory description for empirical characteristics of real networks.

Two-particle angular correlations in p+p and Cu+Cu collisions at PHOBOS

We present results on two-particle angular correlations in p+p and Cu+Cu collisions over a broad range of ($η$,$ϕ$). The PHOBOS detector has a uniquely large angular coverage for inclusive charged particles. This allows for the study of correlations on both long and short range pseudorapidity scales. A complex two-dimensional correlation structure emerges which is interpreted in the context of a cluster model. The cluster size and its decay width are extracted from the two-particle pseudorapidity correlation function. Relative to p+p collisions, Cu+Cu reactions show a non-trivial decrease of cluster size with increasing centrality. These results may provide insight into the hadronization stage of the hot and dense medium created in heavy ion collisions.

Extended Coherence Time with Atom-Number Squeezed Sources

Coherence properties of Bose-Einstein condensates offer the potential for improved interferometric phase contrast. However, decoherence effects due to the mean-field interaction shorten the coherence time, thus limiting potential sensitivity. In this work, we demonstrate increased coherence times with number squeezed states in an optical lattice using the decay of Bloch oscillations to probe the coherence time. We extend coherence times by a factor of 2 over those expected with coherent state BEC interferometry. We observe quantitative agreement with theory both for the degree of initial number squeezing as well as for prolonged coherence times.

Supersymmetric Probes in a Rotating 5D Attractor

Supersymmetric zero-brane and one-brane probes in the squashed $AdS_2\times S^3$ near-horizon geometry of the BMPV black hole are studied. Supersymmetric zero-brane probes stabilized by orbital angular momentum on the $S^3$ are found and shown to saturate a BPS bound. We also find supersymmetric one-brane probes which have momentum and winding around a $U(1)_L\times U(1)_R$ torus in the $S^3$ and in some cases are static.

Nonlinear traveling waves as a framework for understanding turbulent drag reduction

Nonlinear traveling waves that are precursors to laminar-turbulent transition and capture the main structures of the turbulent buffer layer have recently been found to exist in all the canonical parallel flow geometries. We study the effect of polymer additives on these "exact coherent states" (ECS), in the plane Poiseuille geometry. Many key aspects of the turbulent drag reduction phenomenon are found, including: delay in transition to turbulence; drag reduction onset threshold; diameter and concentration effects. Furthermore, examination of the ECS existence region leads to a distinct prediction, consistent with experiments, regarding the nature of the maximum drag reduction regime. Specifically, at sufficiently high wall shear rates, viscoelasticity is found to completely suppress the normal (i.e. streamwise-vortex-dominated) dynamics of the near wall region, indicating that the maximum drag reduction regime is dominated by a distinct class of flow structures.

On different $q$-systems in nonextensive thermostatistics

It is known that the nonextensive statistics was originally formulated for the systems composed of subsystems having same $q$. In this paper, the existence of composite system with different $q$ subsystems is investigated by fitting the power law degree distribution of air networks with $q$-exponential distribution. Then a possible extension the nonextensive statistics to different $q$ systems is provided on the basis of an entropy nonadditivity rule and an unnormalized expectation of energy.

How to fit the degree distribution of the air network?

We investigate three different approaches for fitting the degree distributions of China-, US- and the composite China+US air network, in order to reveal the nature of such distributions and the potential theoretical background on which they are based. Our first approach is the fitting with q-statistics probability distribution, done separately in two regimes. This yields acceptable outcomes but generates two sets of fitting parameters. The second approach is an entire fitting to all data points with the formula proposed by Tsallis et al. So far, this trial is not able to produce consistent results. In the third approach, we fit the data with two composite distributions which may lack theoretical support for the moment.

R^2 Corrections for 5D Black Holes and Rings

We study higher-order corrections to two BPS solutions of 5D supergravity, namely the supersymmetric black ring and the spinning black hole. Due in part to our current relatively limited understanding of F-type terms in 5D supergravity, the nature of these corrections is less clear than that of their 4D cousins. Effects of certain $R^2$ terms found in Calabi-Yau compactification of M-theory are specifically considered. For the case of the black ring, for which the microscopic origin of the entropy is generally known, the corresponding higher order macroscopic correction to the entropy is found to match a microscopic correction, while for the spinning black hole the corrections are partially matched to those of a 4D $D0-D2-D6$ black hole.

The histone octamer influences the wrapping direction of DNA on it: Brownian dynamics simulation of the nucleosome chirality

In eukaryote nucleosome, DNA wraps around a histone octamer in a left-handed way. We study the process of chirality formation of nucleosome with Brownian dynamics simulation. We model the histone octamer with a quantitatively adjustable chirality: left-handed, right-handed or non-chiral, and simulate the dynamical wrapping process of a DNA molecule on it. We find that the chirality of a nucleosome formed is strongly dependent on that of the histone octamer, and different chiralities of the histone octamer induce its different rotation directions in the wrapping process of DNA. In addition, a very weak chirality of the histone octamer is quite enough for sustaining the correct chirality of the nucleosome formed. We also show that the chirality of a nucleosome may be broken at elevated temperature.
