Spatial-Temporal Identity: A Simple yet Effective Baseline for Multivariate Time Series Forecasting

Multivariate Time Series (MTS) forecasting plays a vital role in a wide range of applications. Recently, Spatial-Temporal Graph Neural Networks (STGNNs) have become increasingly popular MTS forecasting methods due to their state-of-the-art performance. However, recent works are becoming more sophisticated with limited performance improvements. This phenomenon motivates us to explore the critical factors of MTS forecasting and design a model that is as powerful as STGNNs, but more concise and efficient. In this paper, we identify the indistinguishability of samples in both spatial and temporal dimensions as a key bottleneck, and propose a simple yet effective baseline for MTS forecasting by attaching Spatial and Temporal IDentity information (STID), which achieves the best performance and efficiency simultaneously based on simple Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLPs). These results suggest that we can design efficient and effective models as long as they solve the indistinguishability of samples, without being limited to STGNNs.

Analytical validation of the helicity conservation for the compressible Euler equations

In [25], Moffatt introduced the concept of helicity in an inviscid fluid and examined the helicity preservation of smooth solution to barotropic compressible flow. In this paper, it is shown that the weak solutions of the above system in Onsager type spaces $\dot{B}^{1/3}_{p,c(\mathbb{N})}$ guarantee the conservation of the helicity. The parallel results of homogeneous incompressible Euler equations and the surface quasi-geostrophic equation are also obtained.

A Data-Driven Approach for Discovering the Most Probable Transition Pathway for a Stochastic Carbon Cycle System

Many natural systems exhibit tipping points where changing environmental conditions spark a sudden shift to a new and sometimes quite different state. Global climate change is often associated with the stability of marine carbon stocks. We consider a stochastic carbonate system of the upper ocean to capture such transition phenomena. Based on the Onsager-Machlup action functional theory, we calculate the most probable transition pathway between the metastable and oscillatory states via a neural shooting method, and further explore the effects of external random carbon input rates on the most probable transition pathway, which provides a basis to recognize naturally occurring tipping points. Particularly, we investigate the effect of the transition time on the transition pathway and further compute the optimal transition time using physics informed neural network, towards the maximum carbonate concentration state in the oscillatory regimes. This work offers some insights on the effects of random carbon input on climate transition in a simple model. Key words: Onsager-Machlup action functional, the most probable transition pathway, neural shooting method, stochastic carbon cycle system.

BiSyn-GAT+: Bi-Syntax Aware Graph Attention Network for Aspect-based Sentiment Analysis

Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) is a fine-grained sentiment analysis task that aims to align aspects and corresponding sentiments for aspect-specific sentiment polarity inference. It is challenging because a sentence may contain multiple aspects or complicated (e.g., conditional, coordinating, or adversative) relations. Recently, exploiting dependency syntax information with graph neural networks has been the most popular trend. Despite its success, methods that heavily rely on the dependency tree pose challenges in accurately modeling the alignment of the aspects and their words indicative of sentiment, since the dependency tree may provide noisy signals of unrelated associations (e.g., the "conj" relation between "great" and "dreadful" in Figure 2). In this paper, to alleviate this problem, we propose a Bi-Syntax aware Graph Attention Network (BiSyn-GAT+). Specifically, BiSyn-GAT+ fully exploits the syntax information (e.g., phrase segmentation and hierarchical structure) of the constituent tree of a sentence to model the sentiment-aware context of every single aspect (called intra-context) and the sentiment relations across aspects (called inter-context) for learning. Experiments on four benchmark datasets demonstrate that BiSyn-GAT+ outperforms the state-of-the-art methods consistently.

Bayesian local exchangeability design for phase II basket trials

We propose an information borrowing strategy for the design and monitoring of phase II basket trials based on the local multisource exchangeability assumption between baskets (disease types). In our proposed local-MEM framework, information borrowing is only allowed to occur locally, i.e., among baskets with similar response rate and the amount of information borrowing is determined by the level of similarity in response rate, whereas baskets not considered similar are not allowed to share information. We construct a two-stage design for phase II basket trials using the proposed strategy. The proposed method is compared to competing Bayesian methods and Simon's two-stage design in a variety of simulation scenarios. We demonstrate the proposed method is able to maintain the family-wise type I error rate at a reasonable level and has desirable basket-wise power compared to Simon's two-stage design. In addition, our method is computationally efficient compared to existing Bayesian methods in that the posterior profiles of interest can be derived explicitly without the need for sampling algorithms.

Gelfand problem and Hemisphere rigidity

We give an interpretation of the hemisphere rigidity theorem of Hang-Wang in the framework of Gelfand problem. More precisely, Hang-Wang showed that for a metric $g$ conformal to the standard metric $g_0$ on $S^{n}_{+}$ with $R\geq n(n-1)$ and whose boundary coincides with $g_0|_{\partial S^{n}_{+}}$, then $g=g_0$. This is related to the classical Gelfand problem, which investigates $-Δu=λg(u)$ for certain nonlinearity $g$ in a bounded region $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ subject to the Dirichlet boundary condition. It is well-known that there exists an extremal $λ^{*}$, such that for $λ>λ^{*}$, the above equation does not admit any solution. Interestingly, Hang-Wang's hemisphere rigidity theorem yields a precise value for $λ^{*}$ for $g(u)=e^{2u}$ when $n=2$ and $g(u)=(1+u)^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}}$ for $n\geq 3$. We attempt to generalize the hemisphere rigidity theorem under $Q$ curvature lower bound and fit this into the interpretation of fourth order Gelfand problem for bi-Laplacian with conformal nonlinearity.

Robust Generation Dispatch with Strategic Renewable Power Curtailment and Decision-Dependent Uncertainty

As renewable energy sources replace traditional power sources (such as thermal generators), uncertainty grows while there are fewer controllable units. To reduce operational risks and avoid frequent real-time emergency controls, a preparatory schedule of renewable generation curtailment is required. This paper proposes a novel two-stage robust generation dispatch (RGD) model, where the preparatory curtailment schedule is optimized in the pre-dispatch stage. The curtailment schedule will then influence the variation range of real-time renewable power output, resulting in a decision-dependent uncertainty (DDU) set. In the re-dispatch stage, the controllable units adjust their outputs within the reserve capacities to maintain power balancing. To overcome the difficulty in solving the RGD with DDU, an adaptive column-and-constraint generation (AC\&CG) algorithm is developed. We prove that the proposed algorithm can generate the optimal solution in finite iterations. Numerical examples show the advantages of the proposed model and algorithm, and validate their practicability and scalability.

Temporal Link Prediction via Adjusted Sigmoid Function and 2-Simplex Sructure

Temporal network link prediction is an important task in the field of network science, and has a wide range of applications in practical scenarios. Revealing the evolutionary mechanism of the network is essential for link prediction, and how to effectively utilize the historical information for temporal links and efficiently extract the high-order patterns of network structure remains a vital challenge. To address these issues, in this paper, we propose a novel temporal link prediction model with adjusted sigmoid function and 2-simplex structure (TLPSS). The adjusted sigmoid decay mode takes the active, decay and stable states of edges into account, which properly fits the life cycle of information. Moreover, the latent matrix sequence is introduced, which is composed of simplex high-order structure, to enhance the performance of link prediction method since it is highly feasible in sparse network. Combining the life cycle of information and simplex high-order structure, the overall performance of TLPSS is achieved by satisfying the consistency of temporal and structural information in dynamic networks. Experimental results on six real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of TLPSS, and our proposed model improves the performance of link prediction by an average of 15% compared to other baseline methods.

Person-job fit estimation from candidate profile and related recruitment history with co-attention neural networks

Existing online recruitment platforms depend on automatic ways of conducting the person-job fit, whose goal is matching appropriate job seekers with job positions. Intuitively, the previous successful recruitment records contain important information, which should be helpful for the current person-job fit. Existing studies on person-job fit, however, mainly focus on calculating the similarity between the candidate resumes and the job postings on the basis of their contents, without taking the recruiters' experience (i.e., historical successful recruitment records) into consideration. In this paper, we propose a novel neural network approach for person-job fit, which estimates person-job fit from candidate profile and related recruitment history with co-attention neural networks (named PJFCANN). Specifically, given a target resume-job post pair, PJFCANN generates local semantic representations through co-attention neural networks and global experience representations via graph neural networks. The final matching degree is calculated by combining these two representations. In this way, the historical successful recruitment records are introduced to enrich the features of resumes and job postings and strengthen the current matching process. Extensive experiments conducted on a large-scale recruitment dataset verify the effectiveness of PJFCANN compared with several state-of-the-art baselines. The codes are released at: https://github.com/CCIIPLab/PJFCANN.

Parameter Convex Neural Networks

Deep learning utilizing deep neural networks (DNNs) has achieved a lot of success recently in many important areas such as computer vision, natural language processing, and recommendation systems. The lack of convexity for DNNs has been seen as a major disadvantage of many optimization methods, such as stochastic gradient descent, which greatly reduces the genelization of neural network applications. We realize that the convexity make sense in the neural network and propose the exponential multilayer neural network (EMLP), a class of parameter convex neural network (PCNN) which is convex with regard to the parameters of the neural network under some conditions that can be realized. Besides, we propose the convexity metric for the two-layer EGCN and test the accuracy when the convexity metric changes. For late experiments, we use the same architecture to make the exponential graph convolutional network (EGCN) and do the experiment on the graph classificaion dataset in which our model EGCN performs better than the graph convolutional network (GCN) and the graph attention network (GAT).

A Graph Data Augmentation Strategy with Entropy Preservation

The Graph Convolutional Networks (GCN) proposed by Kipf and Welling is an effective model for semi-supervised learning, but faces the obstacle of over-smoothing, which will weaken the representation ability of GCN. Recently some works are proposed to tackle above limitation by randomly perturbing graph topology or feature matrix to generate data augmentations as input for training. However, these operations inevitably do damage to the integrity of information structures and have to sacrifice the smoothness of feature manifold. In this paper, we first introduce a novel graph entropy definition as a measure to quantitatively evaluate the smoothness of a data manifold and then point out that this graph entropy is controlled by triangle motif-based information structures. Considering the preservation of graph entropy, we propose an effective strategy to generate randomly perturbed training data but maintain both graph topology and graph entropy. Extensive experiments have been conducted on real-world datasets and the results verify the effectiveness of our proposed method in improving semi-supervised node classification accuracy compared with a surge of baselines. Beyond that, our proposed approach could significantly enhance the robustness of training process for GCN.

Relational Triple Extraction: One Step is Enough

Extracting relational triples from unstructured text is an essential task in natural language processing and knowledge graph construction. Existing approaches usually contain two fundamental steps: (1) finding the boundary positions of head and tail entities; (2) concatenating specific tokens to form triples. However, nearly all previous methods suffer from the problem of error accumulation, i.e., the boundary recognition error of each entity in step (1) will be accumulated into the final combined triples. To solve the problem, in this paper, we introduce a fresh perspective to revisit the triple extraction task, and propose a simple but effective model, named DirectRel. Specifically, the proposed model first generates candidate entities through enumerating token sequences in a sentence, and then transforms the triple extraction task into a linking problem on a "head $\rightarrow$ tail" bipartite graph. By doing so, all triples can be directly extracted in only one step. Extensive experimental results on two widely used datasets demonstrate that the proposed model performs better than the state-of-the-art baselines.

Automatic Noisy Label Correction for Fine-Grained Entity Typing

Fine-grained entity typing (FET) aims to assign proper semantic types to entity mentions according to their context, which is a fundamental task in various entity-leveraging applications. Current FET systems usually establish on large-scale weakly-supervised/distantly annotation data, which may contain abundant noise and thus severely hinder the performance of the FET task. Although previous studies have made great success in automatically identifying the noisy labels in FET, they usually rely on some auxiliary resources which may be unavailable in real-world applications (e.g. pre-defined hierarchical type structures, human-annotated subsets). In this paper, we propose a novel approach to automatically correct noisy labels for FET without external resources. Specifically, it first identifies the potentially noisy labels by estimating the posterior probability of a label being positive or negative according to the logits output by the model, and then relabel candidate noisy labels by training a robust model over the remaining clean labels. Experiments on two popular benchmarks prove the effectiveness of our method. Our source code can be obtained from https://github.com/CCIIPLab/DenoiseFET.

Declaration-based Prompt Tuning for Visual Question Answering

In recent years, the pre-training-then-fine-tuning paradigm has yielded immense success on a wide spectrum of cross-modal tasks, such as visual question answering (VQA), in which a visual-language (VL) model is first optimized via self-supervised task objectives, e.g., masked language modeling (MLM) and image-text matching (ITM), and then fine-tuned to adapt to downstream task (e.g., VQA) via a brand-new objective function, e.g., answer prediction. The inconsistency of the objective forms not only severely limits the generalization of pre-trained VL models to downstream tasks, but also requires a large amount of labeled data for fine-tuning. To alleviate the problem, we propose an innovative VL fine-tuning paradigm (named Declaration-based Prompt Tuning, abbreviated as DPT), which jointly optimizes the objectives of pre-training and fine-tuning of VQA model, boosting the effective adaptation of pre-trained VL models to the downstream task. Specifically, DPT reformulates the objective form of VQA task via (1) textual adaptation, which converts the given questions into declarative sentence-form for prompt-tuning, and (2) task adaptation, which optimizes the objective function of VQA problem in the manner of pre-training phase. Experimental results on GQA dataset show that DPT outperforms the fine-tuned counterpart by a large margin regarding accuracy in both fully-supervised (2.68%) and zero-shot/few-shot (over 31%) settings. All the data and codes will be available to facilitate future research.

Layer-by-layer growth of bilayer graphene single-crystals enabled by self-transmitting catalytic activity

Direct growth of large-area vertically stacked two-dimensional (2D) van der Waal (vdW) materials is a prerequisite for their high-end applications in integrated electronics, optoelectronics and photovoltaics. Currently, centimetre- to even metre-scale monolayers of single-crystal graphene (MLG) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) have been achieved by epitaxial growth on various single-crystalline substrates. However, in principle, this success in monolayer epitaxy seems extremely difficult to be replicated to bi- or few-layer growth, as the full coverage of the first layer was believed to terminate the reactivity of those adopting catalytic metal surfaces. Here, we report an exceptional layer-by-layer chemical vapour deposition (CVD) growth of large size bi-layer graphene single-crystals, enabled by self-transmitting catalytic activity from platinum (Pt) surfaces to the outermost graphene layers. In-situ growth and real-time surveillance experiments, under well-controlled environments, unambiguously verify that the growth does follow the layer-by-layer mode on open surfaces of MLG/Pt(111). First-principles calculations indicate that the transmittal of catalytic activity is allowed by an appreciable electronic hybridisation between graphene overlayers and Pt surfaces, enabling catalytic dissociation of hydrocarbons and subsequently direct graphitisation of their radicals on the outermost sp2 carbon surface. This self-transmitting catalytic activity is also proven to be robust for tube-furnace CVD in fabricating single-crystalline graphene bi-, tri- and tetra-layers, as well as h-BN few-layers. Our findings offer an exceptional strategy for potential controllable, layer-by-layer and wafer-scale growth of vertically stacked few-layered 2D single crystals.

Multi-core fiber enabled fading noise suppression in ϕ-OFDR based quantitative distributed vibration sensing

Coherent fading has been regarded as a critical issue in phase-sensitive optical frequency domain reflectometry (ϕ-OFDR) based distributed fiber-optic sensing. Here, we report on an approach for fading noise suppression in ϕ-OFDR with multi-core fiber. By exploiting the independent nature of the randomness in the distribution of reflective index in each of the cores, the drastic phase fluctuations due to the fading phenomina can be effectively alleviated by applying weighted vectorial averaging for the Rayleigh backscattering traces from each of the cores with distinct fading distributions. With the consistent linear response with respect to external excitation of interest for each of the cores, demonstration for the propsoed ϕ-OFDR with a commercial seven-core fiber has achieved highly sensitive quantitative distributed vibration sensing with about 2.2 nm length precision and 2 cm sensing resolution along the 500 m fiber, corresponding to a range resolution factor as high as about about 4E-5. Featuring long distance, high sensitivity, high resolution, and fading robustness, this approach has shown promising potentials in various sensing techniques for a wide range of practical scenarios.

Data-Driven Dispatchable Regions with Potentially Active Boundaries for Renewable Power Generation: Concept and Construction

The dispatchable region of volatile renewable power generation (RPG) quantifies how much uncertainty the power system can handle at a given operating point. State-of-the-art dispatchable region (DR) research has studied how system operational constraints influence the DR but has seldom considered the effect of the uncertainty features of RPG outputs. The traditional DR is generally described by a large number of boundaries, and it is computationally intensive to construct. To bridge these gaps, a novel type of DR is defined, which is enclosed by potentially active boundaries (PABs) that consider the operational constraints and uncertainty features of RPG outputs. The proposed DR is easier to construct because the PABs are only a small part of the traditional DR boundaries. The procedure for constructing the proposed DR is described in terms of the progressive search for PABs, which is formulated as a mixed-integer linear program by incorporating the discrete observed data points of RPG outputs as an approximate distribution. A parallel solution paradigm is also developed to expedite the construction procedure when using a large observed dataset. Simulation tests on the IEEE 30-bus and 118-bus systems verify the effectiveness and scalability of the proposed DR and the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.
