Space-Filling One-Factor-At-A-Time Designs

Space-filling designs are commonly used in deterministic computer experiments. However, they are ineffective for factor screening, which makes them inefficient when only a small subset of input factors is influential to the output. Recently developed screening designs, such as MOFAT designs, are effective at identifying important factors but lack space-filling properties, limiting their usefulness for surrogate modeling. In this article, we propose a new class of screening designs that improves the space-fillingness while retaining their screening capability. Through several numerical examples, we demonstrate that the proposed designs offer clear advantages over existing designs.

Automated Analysis of Experiments using Hierarchical Garrote

In this work, we propose an automatic method for the analysis of experiments that incorporates hierarchical relationships between the experimental variables. We use a modified version of nonnegative garrote method for variable selection which can incorporate hierarchical relationships. The nonnegative garrote method requires a good initial estimate of the regression parameters for it to work well. To obtain the initial estimate, we use generalized ridge regression with the ridge parameters estimated from a Gaussian process prior placed on the underlying input-output relationship. The proposed method, called HiGarrote, is fast, easy to use, and requires no manual tuning. Analysis of several real experiments are presented to demonstrate its benefits over the existing methods.

Design Selection for Two-Level Multi-Stratum Factorial Experiments Based on Swarm Intelligence Optimization

For unstructured experimental units, the minimum aberration due to Fries and Hunter (1980) is a popular criterion for choosing regular fractional factorial designs. Following which, many related studies have focused on multi-stratum factorial designs, in which multiple error terms arise from the complicated structures of experimental units. Chang and Cheng (2018) proposed a Bayesian-inspired aberration criterion for selecting multi-stratum factorial designs, which can be considered as a generalized version of that in Fries and Hunter (1980). However, they did not propose algorithms for searching for minimum aberration designs. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is a popular optimization method that has been widely used in various applications. In this paper, we propose a new version of the PSO to select regular as well as nonregular multi-stratum designs. To select regular ones, we treat defining words as particles in the PSO and link the PSO with design key matrices. For nonregular multi-stratum designs, we treat treatment combinations as particles in the PSO. Several numerical illustrations are provided.

Electronic structure and Fermi surface character of LaONiP from first principles

Based on First-principles calculation, we have investigated electronic structure of a ZrCuSiAs structured superconductor LaNiPO. The density of states, band structures and Fermi surfaces have been given in detail. Our results indicate that the bonding of the La-O and Ni-P is strongly covalent whereas binding property between the LaO and NiP blocks is mostly ionic. It's also found that four bands are across the Fermi level and the corresponding Fermi surfaces all have a two-dimensional character. In addition, we also give the band decomposed charge density, which suggests that orbital components of Fermi surfaces are more complicated than cuprate superconductors.
