Joint Device Activity Detection, Channel Estimation and Signal Detection for Massive Grant-free Access via BiGAMP

Massive access has been challenging for the fifth generation (5G) and beyond since the abundance of devices causes communication overload to skyrocket. In an uplink massive access scenario, device traffic is sporadic in any given coherence time. Thus, channels across the antennas of each device exhibit correlation, which can be characterized by the row sparse channel matrix structure. In this work, we develop a bilinear generalized approximate message passing (BiGAMP) algorithm based on the row sparse channel matrix structure. This algorithm can jointly detect device activities, estimate channels, and detect signals in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems by alternating updates between channel matrices and signal matrices. The signal observation provides additional information for performance improvement compared to the existing algorithms. We further analyze state evolution (SE) to measure the performance of the proposed algorithm and characterize the convergence condition for SE. Moreover, we perform theoretical analysis on the error probability of device activity detection, the mean square error of channel estimation, and the symbol error rate of signal detection. The numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm over the state-of-the-art methods in DADCE-SD, and the numerical results are relatively close to the theoretical analysis results.

Quadrature Spatial Scattering Modulation for mmWave Transmission

In this letter, we investigate a novel quadrature spatial scattering modulation (QSSM) transmission technique based on millimeter wave (mmWave) systems, in which the transmitter generates two orthogonal beams targeting candidate scatterers in the channel to carry the real and imaginary parts of the conventional signal, respectively. Meanwhile, the maximum likelihood (ML) detector is adopted at the receiver to recover the received beams and signals. Based on the ML detector, we derive the closed-form average bit error probability (ABEP) expression of the QSSM scheme. Furthermore, we evaluate the asymptotic ABEP expression of the proposed scheme. Monte Carlo simulations verify the exactness and tightness of the derivation results. It is shown that the ABEP performance of QSSM is better than that of traditional spatial scattering modulation.

The parallax and 3D kinematics of water masers in the massive star-forming region G034.43+0.24

We report a trigonometric parallax measurement of 22 GHz water masers in the massive star-forming region G034.43+0.24 as part of the Bar and Spiral Structure Legacy (BeSSeL) Survey using the Very Long Baseline Array. The parallax is 0.330$\pm$50.018 mas, corresponding to a distance of $3.03^{+0.17}_{-0.16}$ kpc. This locates G034.43+0.24 near the inner edge of the Sagittarius spiral arm and at one end of a linear distribution of massive young stars which cross nearly the full width of the arm. The measured 3-dimensional motion of G034.43+0.24 indicates a near-circular Galactic orbit. The water masers display arc-like distributions, possibly bow shocks, associated with winds from one or more massive young stars.

Adaptive Supervised PatchNCE Loss for Learning H&E-to-IHC Stain Translation with Inconsistent Groundtruth Image Pairs

Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining highlights the molecular information critical to diagnostics in tissue samples. However, compared to H&E staining, IHC staining can be much more expensive in terms of both labor and the laboratory equipment required. This motivates recent research that demonstrates that the correlations between the morphological information present in the H&E-stained slides and the molecular information in the IHC-stained slides can be used for H&E-to-IHC stain translation. However, due to a lack of pixel-perfect H&E-IHC groundtruth pairs, most existing methods have resorted to relying on expert annotations. To remedy this situation, we present a new loss function, Adaptive Supervised PatchNCE (ASP), to directly deal with the input to target inconsistencies in a proposed H&E-to-IHC image-to-image translation framework. The ASP loss is built upon a patch-based contrastive learning criterion, named Supervised PatchNCE (SP), and augments it further with weight scheduling to mitigate the negative impact of noisy supervision. Lastly, we introduce the Multi-IHC Stain Translation (MIST) dataset, which contains aligned H&E-IHC patches for 4 different IHC stains critical to breast cancer diagnosis. In our experiment, we demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms existing image-to-image translation methods for stain translation to multiple IHC stains. All of our code and datasets are available at https://github.com/lifangda01/AdaptiveSupervisedPatchNCE.

Insight-HXMT and GECAM-C observations of the brightest-of-all-time GRB 221009A

GRB 221009A is the brightest gamma-ray burst ever detected since the discovery of this kind of energetic explosions. However, an accurate measurement of the prompt emission properties of this burst is very challenging due to its exceptional brightness. With joint observations of \textit{Insight}-HXMT and GECAM-C, we made an unprecedentedly accurate measurement of the emission during the first $\sim$1800 s of GRB 221009A, including its precursor, main emission (ME, which dominates the burst in flux), flaring emission and early afterglow, in the hard X-ray to soft gamma-ray band from $\sim$ 10 keV to $\sim$ 6 MeV. Based on the GECAM-C unsaturated data of the ME, we measure a record-breaking isotropic equivalent energy ($E_{\rm iso}$) of $\bf \sim 1.5 \times 10^{55}$ erg, which is about eight times the total rest-mass energy of the Sun. The early afterglow data require a significant jet break between 650 s and 1100 s, most likely at $\sim950$ s from the afterglow starting time $T_{AG}$, which corresponds to a jet opening angle of $\sim {0.7^\circ} \ (η_γn)^{1/8}$, where $n$ is the ambient medium density in units of $\rm cm^{-3}$ and $η_γ$ is the ratio between $γ$-ray energy and afterglow kinetic energy. The beaming-corrected total $γ$-ray energy $E_γ$ is $\sim 1.15 \times10^{51} \ (η_γn)^{1/4}$ erg, which is typical for long GRBs. These results suggest that this GRB may have a special central engine, which could launch and collimate a very narrowly beamed jet with an ordinary energy budget, leading to exceptionally luminous gamma-ray radiation per unit solid angle. Alternatively, more GRBs might have such a narrow and bright beam, which are missed by an unfavorable viewing angle or have been detected without distance measurement.

Intermediate-mass black holes: finding of episodic, large-scale and powerful jet activity in a dwarf galaxy

Dwarf galaxies are characterised by a very low luminosity and low mass. Because of significant accretion and ejection activity of massive black holes, some dwarf galaxies also host low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In a few dwarf AGNs, very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations have found faint non-thermal radio emission. SDSS J090613.77+561015.2 is a dwarf AGN owning an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) with a mass of $M_{BH} = 3.6^{+5.9}_{-2.3} \times 10^5 M_{sun}$ and showing a rarely-seen two-component radio structure in its radio nucleus. To further probe their nature, i.e. the IMBH jet activity, we performed additional deep observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 1.66 GHz and 4.99 GHz. We find the more diffuse emission regions and structure details. These new EVN imaging results allow us to reveal a two-sided jet morphology with a size up to about 150 mas (projected length $\sim$140 pc) and a radio luminosity of about $3\times10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The peak feature has an optically thin radio spectrum and thus more likely represents a relatively young ejecta instead of a jet base. The EVN study on SDSS J090613.77+561015.2 demonstrates the existence of episodic, relatively large-scale and powerful IMBH jet activity in dwarf AGNs. Moreover, we collected a small sample of VLBI-detected dwarf AGNs and investigated their connections with normal AGNs. We notice that these radio sources in the dwarf AGNs tend to have steep spectra and small linear sizes, and possibly represent ejecta from scaled-down episodic jet activity.

VLBI astrometry on the white dwarf pulsar AR Scorpii

AR Scorpii (AR Sco), the only-known radio-pulsing white dwarf binary, shows unusual pulsating emission at the radio, infrared, optical and ultraviolet bands. To determine its astrometric parameters at the radio band independently, we conducted multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) phase-referencing observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 5 GHz and the Chinese VLBI Network (CVN) plus the Warkworth 30-metre telescope (New Zealand) at 8.6 GHz. By using the differential VLBI astrometry, we provide high-precision astrometric measurements on the parallax ($π=8.52_{-0.07}^{+0.04}$ mas), and proper motion ($μ_α=9.48_{-0.07}^{+0.04}$ mas yr$^{-1}$, $μ_δ=-51.32_{-0.38}^{+0.22}$ mas yr$^{-1}$). The new VLBI results agree with the optical Gaia astrometry. Our kinematic analysis reveals that the Galactic space velocities of AR Sco are quite consistent with that of both intermediate polars (IPs) and polars. Combined with the previous tightest VLBI constraint on the size, our parallax distance suggests that the radio emission of AR Sco should be located within the light cylinder of its white dwarf.

An Extension of Many-Interacting-Worlds Method on Non-Guassian Model

Discussions about whether quantum theory is determinism or indeterminism has lasted for a century. A new approach to standard quantum mechanics called many-interacting-worlds method based on many-worlds interpretation and de Broglie-Bohm mechanics provided the possibility to demonstrate probability from deterministic universe. The many-interacting-worlds method has been proved successful in the ground state of harmonic oscillator. In this article we extend this method to one dimensional Coulomb potential and construct a corresponding empirical density function. We also provide a theoretical proof of the convergence of density function. Our numerical simulation of one dimensional Coulomb potential in the first excited state obtains the consistent result with standard quantum mechanics and shows the applicability of many-interacting-worlds method. This research provides the possibility to extend many-interacting-worlds method to non-Gaussian quantum systems.

Theory Techniques for Precision Physics -- Snowmass 2021 TF06 Topical Group Report

The wealth of experimental data collected at laboratory experiments suggests that there is some scale separation between the Standard Model (SM) and phenomena beyond the SM (BSM). New phenomena can manifest itself as small corrections to SM predictions, or as signals in processes where the SM predictions vanish or are exceedingly small. This makes precise calculations of the SM expectations essential, in order to maximize the sensitivity of current and forthcoming experiments to BSM physics. This topical group report highlights some past and forthcoming theory developments critical for maximizing the sensitivity of the experimental program to understanding Nature at the shortest distances.

Overview of the Observing System and Initial Scientific Accomplishments of the East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN)

The East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN) is an international VLBI facility in East Asia and is operated under mutual collaboration between East Asian countries, as well as part of Southeast Asian and European countries. EAVN currently consists of 16 radio telescopes and three correlators located in China, Japan, and Korea, and is operated mainly at three frequency bands, 6.7, 22, and 43 GHz with the longest baseline length of 5078 km, resulting in the highest angular resolution of 0.28 milliarcseconds at 43 GHz. One of distinct capabilities of EAVN is multi-frequency simultaneous data reception at nine telescopes, which enable us to employ the frequency phase transfer technique to obtain better sensitivity at higher observing frequencies. EAVN started its open-use program in the second half of 2018, providing a total observing time of more than 1100 hours in a year. EAVN fills geographical gap in global VLBI array, resulting in enabling us to conduct contiguous high-resolution VLBI observations. EAVN has produced various scientific accomplishments especially in observations toward active galactic nuclei, evolved stars, and star-forming regions. These activities motivate us to initiate launch of the 'Global VLBI Alliance' to provide an opportunity of VLBI observation with the longest baselines on the earth.

Intelligent Surface Enabled Sensing-Assisted Communication

Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication is expected to support many promising applications in next-generation wireless networks. The recent development of integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) technology offers new opportunities to meet the stringent sensing and communication (S&C) requirements in V2X networks. However, considering the relatively small radar cross section (RCS) of the vehicles and the limited transmit power of the road site units (RSUs), the power of echoes may be too weak to achieve effective target detection and tracking. To handle this issue, we propose a novel sensing-assisted communication scheme by employing an intelligent Omni-surface (IOS) on the surface of the vehicle. First, a two-phase ISAC protocol, including the S&C phase and the communication-only phase, was presented to maximize the throughput by jointly optimizing the IOS phase shifts and the sensing duration. Then, we derive a closed-form expression of the achievable rate which achieves a good approximation. Furthermore, a sufficient and necessary condition for the existence of the S&C phase is derived to provide useful insights for practical system design. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed sensing-assisted communication scheme in achieving high throughput with low transmit power requirements.

Robust Sum-Rate Maximization in Transmissive RMS Transceiver-Enabled SWIPT Networks

In this paper, we propose a state-of-the-art downlink communication transceiver design for transmissive reconfigurable metasurface (RMS)-enabled simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) networks. Specifically, a feed antenna is deployed in the transmissive RMS-based transceiver, which can be used to implement beamforming. According to the relationship between wavelength and propagation distance, the spatial propagation models of plane and spherical waves are built. Then, in the case of imperfect channel state information (CSI), we formulate a robust system sum-rate maximization problem that jointly optimizes RMS transmissive coefficient, transmit power allocation, and power splitting ratio design while taking account of the non-linear energy harvesting model and outage probability criterion. Since the coupling of optimization variables, the whole optimization problem is non-convex and cannot be solved directly. Therefore, the alternating optimization (AO) framework is implemented to decompose the non-convex original problem. In detail, the whole problem is divided into three sub-problems to solve. For the non-convexity of the objective function, successive convex approximation (SCA) is used to transform it, and penalty function method and difference-of-convex (DC) programming are applied to deal with the non-convex constraints. Finally, we alternately solve the three sub-problems until the entire optimization problem converges. Numerical results show that our proposed algorithm has convergence and better performance than other benchmark algorithms.

Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Aided Secure Transmission

In this letter, we study a rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA)-based intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided multi-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) secure communication system with a potential eavesdropper (Eve). Aiming to maximize the minimum secrecy rate (SR) among all the legitimate users (LUs), a design problem for jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming with artificial noise (AN), the IRS beamforming, and the secrecy common rate allocation is formulated. Since the design problem is highly non-convex with coupled optimization variables, we develop a computationally efficient algorithm based on the alternating optimization (AO) technique to solve it suboptimally. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed design can significantly improve the max-min SR over the benchmark schemes without IRS or adopting other multiple access techniques. In particular, employing the RSMA strategy can substantially reduce the required numbers of IRS elements for achieving a target level of secrecy performance compared with the benchmark schemes.

CATCH: Chasing All Transients Constellation Hunters Space Mission

In time-domain astronomy, a substantial number of transients will be discovered by multi-wavelength and multi-messenger observatories, posing a great challenge for follow-up capabilities. We have thus proposed an intelligent X-ray constellation, the Chasing All Transients Constellation Hunters (CATCH) space mission. Consisting of 126 micro-satellites in three types, CATCH will have the capability to perform follow-up observations for a large number of different types of transients simultaneously. Each satellite in the constellation will carry lightweight X-ray optics and use a deployable mast to increase the focal length. The combination of different optics and detector systems enables different types of satellites to have multiform observation capabilities, including timing, spectroscopy, imaging, and polarization. Controlled by the intelligent system, different satellites can cooperate to perform uninterrupted monitoring, all-sky follow-up observations, and scanning observations with a flexible field of view (FOV) and multi-dimensional observations. Therefore, CATCH will be a powerful mission to study the dynamic universe. Here, we present the current design of the spacecraft, optics, detector system, constellation configuration and observing modes, as well as the development plan.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Enabled Multi-Target Sensing

Besides improving communication performance, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) are also promising enablers for achieving larger sensing coverage and enhanced sensing quality. Nevertheless, in the absence of a direct path between the base station (BS) and the targets, multi-target sensing is generally very difficult, since IRSs are incapable of proactively transmitting sensing beams or analyzing target information. Moreover, the echoes of different targets reflected via the IRS-established virtual links share the same directionality at the BS. In this paper, we study a wireless system comprising a multi-antenna BS and an IRS for multi-target sensing, where the beamforming vector and the IRS phase shifts are jointly optimized to improve the sensing performance. To meet the different sensing requirements, such as a minimum received power and a minimum sensing frequency, we propose three novel IRS-assisted sensing schemes: Time division (TD) sensing, signature sequence (SS) sensing, and hybrid TD-SS sensing. First, for TD sensing, the sensing tasks are performed in sequence over time. Subsequently, a novel signature sequence (SS) sensing scheme is proposed to improve sensing efficiency by establishing a relationship between directions and SSs. To strike a flexible balance between the beam pattern gain and sensing efficiency, we also propose a general hybrid TD-SS sensing scheme with target grouping, where targets belonging to the same group are sensed simultaneously via SS sensing, while the targets in different groups are assigned to orthogonal time slots. By controlling the number of groups, the hybrid TD-SS sensing scheme can provide a more flexible balance between beam pattern gain and sensing frequency. Moreover, ...

Decentralized Federated Reinforcement Learning for User-Centric Dynamic TFDD Control

The explosive growth of dynamic and heterogeneous data traffic brings great challenges for 5G and beyond mobile networks. To enhance the network capacity and reliability, we propose a learning-based dynamic time-frequency division duplexing (D-TFDD) scheme that adaptively allocates the uplink and downlink time-frequency resources of base stations (BSs) to meet the asymmetric and heterogeneous traffic demands while alleviating the inter-cell interference. We formulate the problem as a decentralized partially observable Markov decision process (Dec-POMDP) that maximizes the long-term expected sum rate under the users' packet dropping ratio constraints. In order to jointly optimize the global resources in a decentralized manner, we propose a federated reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm named federated Wolpertinger deep deterministic policy gradient (FWDDPG) algorithm. The BSs decide their local time-frequency configurations through RL algorithms and achieve global training via exchanging local RL models with their neighbors under a decentralized federated learning framework. Specifically, to deal with the large-scale discrete action space of each BS, we adopt a DDPG-based algorithm to generate actions in a continuous space, and then utilize Wolpertinger policy to reduce the mapping errors from continuous action space back to discrete action space. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed algorithm to benchmark algorithms with respect to system sum rate.

Blockchain Assisted Federated Learning over Wireless Channels: Dynamic Resource Allocation and Client Scheduling

The blockchain technology has been extensively studied to enable distributed and tamper-proof data processing in federated learning (FL). Most existing blockchain assisted FL (BFL) frameworks have employed a third-party blockchain network to decentralize the model aggregation process. However, decentralized model aggregation is vulnerable to pooling and collusion attacks from the third-party blockchain network. Driven by this issue, we propose a novel BFL framework that features the integration of training and mining at the client side. To optimize the learning performance of FL, we propose to maximize the long-term time average (LTA) training data size under a constraint of LTA energy consumption. To this end, we formulate a joint optimization problem of training client selection and resource allocation (i.e., the transmit power and computation frequency at the client side), and solve the long-term mixed integer non-linear programming based on a Lyapunov technique. In particular, the proposed dynamic resource allocation and client scheduling (DRACS) algorithm can achieve a trade-off of [$\mathcal{O}(1/V)$, $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{V})$] to balance the maximization of the LTA training data size and the minimization of the LTA energy consumption with a control parameter $V$. Our experimental results show that the proposed DRACS algorithm achieves better learning accuracy than benchmark client scheduling strategies with limited time or energy consumption.

Joint Communication and Trajectory Design for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Empowered UAV SWIPT Networks

Aiming at the limited battery capacity of widely deployed low-power smart devices in the Internet-of-things (IoT), this paper proposes a novel intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) empowered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) network framework, in which IRS is used to reconstruct the wireless channel to enhance the wireless energy transmission efficiency and coverage area of the UAV SWIPT networks. In this paper, we formulate an achievable sum-rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing UAV trajectory, successive interference cancellation (SIC) decoding order, UAV transmit power allocation, power splitting (PS) ratio and IRS reflection coefficient while taking account of user non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and a non-linear energy harvesting model. Due to the coupling of optimization variables, this problem is a complex non-convex optimization problem, and it is challenging to solve it directly. We first transform the problem, and then apply the alternating optimization (AO) algorithm framework to divide the transformed problem into four sub-problems to solve it. Specifically, by applying successive convex approximation (SCA), penalty function method and difference-convex (DC) programming, UAV trajectory, SIC decoding order, UAV transmit power allocation, PS ratio and IRS reflection coefficient are alternately optimized until the convergence is achieved. Numerical simulation results verify the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm compared to other algorithms.
