GLDPC-PC Codes: Channel Coding Towards 6G Communications

The sixth generation (6G) wireless communication system will improve the key technical indicators by one to two orders of magnitude, and come with some new features. As a crucial technique to enhance the reliability and efficiency of data transmission, the next-generation channel coding is thus confronted with new challenges in terms of complexity, latency, performance. This article supplies an overview of the potential channel codes for 6G communications. In addition, we explore to develop next-generation channel codes based on lowdensity parity-check (LDPC) and polar frameworks, introducing a concept named generalized LDPC with polar-like component(GLDPC-PC) codes. The codes have exhibited promising error correction performance and manageable complexity, which can be further optimized by specific code design. The opportunities and challenges of GLDPC-PC codes are also discussed.

Addressing the Curse of Scenario and Task Generalization in AI-6G: A Multi-Modal Paradigm

Existing works on machine learning (ML)-empowered wireless communication primarily focus on monolithic scenarios and single tasks. However, with the blooming growth of communication task classes coupled with various task requirements in future 6G systems, this working pattern is obviously unsustainable. Therefore, identifying a groundbreaking paradigm that enables a universal model to solve multiple tasks in the physical layer within diverse scenarios is crucial for future system evolution. This paper aims to fundamentally address the curse of ML model generalization across diverse scenarios and tasks by unleashing multi-modal feature integration capabilities in future systems. Given the universality of electromagnetic propagation theory, the communication process is determined by the scattering environment, which can be more comprehensively characterized by cross-modal perception, thus providing sufficient information for all communication tasks across varied environments. This fact motivates us to propose a transformative two-stage multi-modal pre-training and downstream task adaptation paradigm...

S2CFormer: Revisiting the RD-Latency Trade-off in Transformer-based Learned Image Compression

Transformer-based Learned Image Compression (LIC) suffers from a suboptimal trade-off between decoding latency and rate-distortion (R-D) performance. Moreover, the critical role of the FeedForward Network (FFN)-based channel aggregation module has been largely overlooked. Our research reveals that efficient channel aggregation-rather than complex and time-consuming spatial operations-is the key to achieving competitive LIC models. Based on this insight, we initiate the ``S2CFormer'' paradigm, a general architecture that simplifies spatial operations and enhances channel operations to overcome the previous trade-off. We present two instances of the S2CFormer: S2C-Conv, and S2C-Attention. Both models demonstrate state-of-the-art (SOTA) R-D performance and significantly faster decoding speed. Furthermore, we introduce S2C-Hybrid, an enhanced variant that maximizes the strengths of different S2CFormer instances to achieve a better performance-latency trade-off. This model outperforms all the existing methods on the Kodak, Tecnick, and CLIC Professional Validation datasets, setting a new benchmark for efficient and high-performance LIC. Electric fields-tuning plasmon and coupled plasmon-phonon modes in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides

We theoretically investigate the electric field-tuning plasmons and plasmon-phonon couplings of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as monolayer MoS2, under the consideration of spin-orbit coupling. It is revealed that the frequencies of plasmons and coupled plasmon-phonon modes originating from electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions can be effectively changed by using applied driving electric fields. Notably, these frequencies exhibit a decreasing trend with an increasing electric field. Moreover, the weak angular dependence of these modes suggests that the driving electric field does not induce significant anisotropy in the plasmon modes. The outcomes of this work demonstrate that the plasmon and coupled plasmon-phonon modes can be tuned not only by manipulating the electron density via the application of a gate voltage but also by tuning the applied driving electric field. These findings hold relevance for facilitating the application of 2D TMDs in optoelectronic devices.

Unsourced Random Access in MIMO Quasi-Static Rayleigh Fading Channels: Finite Blocklength and Scaling Law Analyses

This paper considers the unsourced random access (URA) problem with a random and unknown number of active users in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) quasi-static Rayleigh fading channels. We derive non-asymptotic achievability bounds on the probability of incorrectly estimating the number of active users, and provide scaling laws on the gap between the estimated and true numbers of active users. We prove that the error probability reaches a plateau as the power $P$ and blocklength $n$ increase, whereas it decays exponentially with the number $L$ of receive antennas and eventually vanishes. Then, we explore the fundamental limits of URA by deriving non-asymptotic achievability bounds and converse bounds (including two single-user converse bounds and one multi-user ensemble converse bound) on the minimum energy-per-bit required by each active user to transmit $J$ bits with blocklength $n$ under misdetection and false-alarm constraints. Numerical results show that the extra required energy-per-bit due to the uncertainty in the number ${\rm{K}}_a$ of active users decreases as $L$ and $\mathbb{E}[{\rm{K}}_a]$ increase and the error requirement becomes milder. In the non-asymptotic regime, using codewords distributed on a sphere outperforms Gaussian random coding. Existing schemes are shown to exhibit a large gap to our bounds when the number of active users is large, calling for more advanced schemes that perform energy-efficiently in this case. In the asymptotic regime with $n\to\infty$, we establish scaling laws on the minimum required $P$ and $L$ to reliably support ${\rm{K}}_a$ active users as functions of $n$, which highlight the potential of MIMO in enabling low-cost communication and indicate that it is possible for the minimum required $P$ and $L$ to remain on the same order when the number of active users increases but stays below a threshold.

Multi-user Wireless Image Semantic Transmission over MIMO Multiple Access Channels

This paper focuses on a typical uplink transmission scenario over multiple-input multiple-output multiple access channel (MIMO-MAC) and thus propose a multi-user learnable CSI fusion semantic communication (MU-LCFSC) framework. It incorporates CSI as the side information into both the semantic encoders and decoders to generate a proper feature mask map in order to produce a more robust attention weight distribution. Especially for the decoding end, a cooperative successive interference cancellation procedure is conducted along with a cooperative mask ratio generator, which flexibly controls the mask elements of feature mask maps. Numerical results verify the superiority of proposed MU-LCFSC compared to DeepJSCC-NOMA over 3 dB in terms of PSNR.

Fluid Antenna-Aided Robust Secure Transmission for RSMA-ISAC Systems

This paper leverages fluid antenna (FA) and rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) to enhance the physical layer security (PLS) of an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system. We consider a practical multi-user multi-input single-output (MU-MISO) system, where a base station (BS) equipped with fixed position antennas (FPAs) employs RSMA to communicate with multiple single-FA users, while an eavesdropping target may potentially wiretap the signals. The system adopts a novel rate splitting (RS) scheme, where the common layer stream serves a dual purpose: it conveys valid data to legitimate users (LUs) while simultaneously generating jamming signals to confuse potential eavesdroppers. We establish the problem and propose the optimization algorithm under two conditions: perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) conditions. Specifically, under perfect the CSI condition, we address the non-convex optimization problem by proposing an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm, which decomposes the problem into two subproblems: beamforming matrix optimization and the adjustment of FA positions. For beamforming optimization, we utilize semidefinite programming (SDP) and successive convex approximation (SCA) to convert the problem into a more tractable convex form. Given a fixed beamforming matrix, SCA is applied to handle the surrogate upper bound of the constraints. In the case of imperfect CSI, the continuous nature of CSI errors leads to an infinite number of constraints. To overcome this challenge, we propose an AO-based algorithm that incorporates the S-Procedure and SCA to obtain a high-quality beamforming matrix and effective FA positions. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed FA-aided RSMA-ISAC system significantly enhances security compared to traditional FPA-based and SDMA-based systems.

Efficient Precoding in XL-MIMO-AFDM System

This paper explores the potential of affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) to mitigate the multiuser interference (MUI) problem by employing time-domain precoding in extremely-large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) systems. In XL-MIMO systems, user mobility significantly improves network capacity and transmission quality. Meanwhile, the robustness of AFDM to Doppler shift is enhanced in user mobility scenarios, which further improves the system performance. However, the multicarrier nature of AFDM has attracted much attention, and it leads to a significant increase in precoding complexity. However, the serious problem is that the multicarrier use of AFDM leads to a sharp increase in precoding complexity. Therefore, we employ efficient precoding randomized Kaczmarz (rKA) to reduce the complexity overhead. Through simulation analysis, we compare the performance of XL-MIMO-AFDM and XL-MIMO orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (XL-MIMO-OFDM) in mobile scenarios, and the results show that our proposed AFDM-based XL-MIMO precoding design can be more efficient.

Joint Communication and Radar Sensing for Terahertz Space-Air-Ground Integrated Networks (SAGIN)

The transition from isolated systems to integrated solutions has driven the development of space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGIN) as well as the integration of communication and radar sensing functionalities. By leveraging the unique properties of the Terahertz (THz) band, THz joint communication and radar sensing (JCRS) supports high-speed communication and precise sensing, addressing the growing demands of SAGIN for connectivity and environmental awareness. However, most existing THz studies focus on terrestrial and static scenarios, with limited consideration for the dynamic and non-terrestrial environments of SAGIN. In this paper, the THz JCRS techniques for SAGIN are comprehensively investigated. Specifically, propagation characteristics and channel models of THz waves in non-terrestrial environments are analyzed. A link capacity comparison with millimeter-wave, THz, and free-space optical frequency bands is conducted to highlight the advantages of THz frequencies. Moreover, novel JCRS waveform design strategies are presented to achieve mutual merit of communication and radar sensing, while networking strategies are developed to overcome challenges in SAGIN such as high mobility. Furthermore, advancements in THz device technologies, including antennas and amplifiers, are reviewed to assess their roles in enabling practical JCRS implementations.

Anatomical grounding pre-training for medical phrase grounding

Medical Phrase Grounding (MPG) maps radiological findings described in medical reports to specific regions in medical images. The primary obstacle hindering progress in MPG is the scarcity of annotated data available for training and validation. We propose anatomical grounding as an in-domain pre-training task that aligns anatomical terms with corresponding regions in medical images, leveraging large-scale datasets such as Chest ImaGenome. Our empirical evaluation on MS-CXR demonstrates that anatomical grounding pre-training significantly improves performance in both a zero-shot learning and fine-tuning setting, outperforming state-of-the-art MPG models. Our fine-tuned model achieved state-of-the-art performance on MS-CXR with an mIoU of 61.2, demonstrating the effectiveness of anatomical grounding pre-training for MPG.

Large Language Model for Lossless Image Compression with Visual Prompts

Recent advancements in deep learning have driven significant progress in lossless image compression. With the emergence of Large Language Models (LLMs), preliminary attempts have been made to leverage the extensive prior knowledge embedded in these pretrained models to enhance lossless image compression, particularly by improving the entropy model. However, a significant challenge remains in bridging the gap between the textual prior knowledge within LLMs and lossless image compression. To tackle this challenge and unlock the potential of LLMs, this paper introduces a novel paradigm for lossless image compression that incorporates LLMs with visual prompts. Specifically, we first generate a lossy reconstruction of the input image as visual prompts, from which we extract features to serve as visual embeddings for the LLM. The residual between the original image and the lossy reconstruction is then fed into the LLM along with these visual embeddings, enabling the LLM to function as an entropy model to predict the probability distribution of the residual. Extensive experiments on multiple benchmark datasets demonstrate our method achieves state-of-the-art compression performance, surpassing both traditional and learning-based lossless image codecs. Furthermore, our approach can be easily extended to images from other domains, such as medical and screen content images, achieving impressive performance. These results highlight the potential of LLMs for lossless image compression and may inspire further research in related directions.

DARF: Depth-Aware Generalizable Neural Radiance Field

Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) has revolutionized novel-view rendering tasks and achieved impressive results. However, the inefficient sampling and per-scene optimization hinder its wide applications. Though some generalizable NeRFs have been proposed, the rendering quality is unsatisfactory due to the lack of geometry and scene uniqueness. To address these issues, we propose the Depth-Aware Generalizable Neural Radiance Field (DARF) with a Depth-Aware Dynamic Sampling (DADS) strategy to perform efficient novel view rendering and unsupervised depth estimation on unseen scenes without per-scene optimization. Distinct from most existing generalizable NeRFs, our framework infers the unseen scenes on both pixel level and geometry level with only a few input images. By introducing a pre-trained depth estimation module to derive the depth prior, narrowing down the ray sampling interval to the proximity space of the estimated surface, and sampling in expectation maximum position, we preserve scene characteristics while learning common attributes for novel-view synthesis. Moreover, we introduce a Multi-level Semantic Consistency loss (MSC) to assist with more informative representation learning. Extensive experiments on indoor and outdoor datasets show that compared with state-of-the-art generalizable NeRF methods, DARF reduces samples by 50%, while improving rendering quality and depth estimation. SSP-IR: Semantic and Structure Priors for Diffusion-based Realistic Image Restoration

Realistic image restoration is a crucial task in computer vision, and diffusion-based models for image restoration have garnered significant attention due to their ability to produce realistic results. Restoration can be seen as a controllable generation conditioning on priors. However, due to the severity of image degradation, existing diffusion-based restoration methods cannot fully exploit priors from low-quality images and still have many challenges in perceptual quality, semantic fidelity, and structure accuracy. Based on the challenges, we introduce a novel image restoration method, SSP-IR. Our approach aims to fully exploit semantic and structure priors from low-quality images to guide the diffusion model in generating semantically faithful and structurally accurate natural restoration results. Specifically, we integrate the visual comprehension capabilities of Multimodal Large Language Models (explicit) and the visual representations of the original image (implicit) to acquire accurate semantic prior. To extract degradation-independent structure prior, we introduce a Processor with RGB and FFT constraints to extract structure prior from the low-quality images, guiding the diffusion model and preventing the generation of unreasonable artifacts. Lastly, we employ a multi-level attention mechanism to integrate the acquired semantic and structure priors. The qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate that our method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods overall on both synthetic and real-world datasets. OBI-Bench: Can LMMs Aid in Study of Ancient Script on Oracle Bones?

We introduce OBI-Bench, a holistic benchmark crafted to systematically evaluate large multi-modal models (LMMs) on whole-process oracle bone inscriptions (OBI) processing tasks demanding expert-level domain knowledge and deliberate cognition. OBI-Bench includes 5,523 meticulously collected diverse-sourced images, covering five key domain problems: recognition, rejoining, classification, retrieval, and deciphering. These images span centuries of archaeological findings and years of research by front-line scholars, comprising multi-stage font appearances from excavation to synthesis, such as original oracle bone, inked rubbings, oracle bone fragments, cropped single characters, and handprinted characters. Unlike existing benchmarks, OBI-Bench focuses on advanced visual perception and reasoning with OBI-specific knowledge, challenging LMMs to perform tasks akin to those faced by experts. The evaluation of 6 proprietary LMMs as well as 17 open-source LMMs highlights the substantial challenges and demands posed by OBI-Bench. Even the latest versions of GPT-4o, Gemini 1.5 Pro, and Qwen-VL-Max are still far from public-level humans in some fine-grained perception tasks. However, they perform at a level comparable to untrained humans in deciphering tasks, indicating remarkable capabilities in offering new interpretative perspectives and generating creative guesses. We hope OBI-Bench can facilitate the community to develop domain-specific multi-modal foundation models towards ancient language research and delve deeper to discover and enhance these untapped potentials of LMMs.

RWZC: A Model-Driven Approach for Learning-based Robust Wyner-Ziv Coding

In this paper, a novel learning-based Wyner-Ziv coding framework is considered under a distributed image transmission scenario, where the correlated source is only available at the receiver. Unlike other learnable frameworks, our approach demonstrates robustness to non-stationary source correlation, where the overlapping information between image pairs varies. Specifically, we first model the affine relationship between correlated images and leverage this model for learnable mask generation and rate-adaptive joint source-channel coding. Moreover, we also provide a warping-prediction network to remove the distortion from channel interference and affine transform. Intuitively, the observed performance improvement is largely due to focusing on the simple geometric relationship, rather than the complex joint distribution between the sources. Numerical results show that our framework achieves a 1.5 dB gain in PSNR and a 0.2 improvement in MS-SSIM, along with a significant superiority in perceptual metrics, compared to state-of-the-art methods when applied to real-world samples with non-stationary correlations.

Benchmarking Randomized Optimization Algorithms on Binary, Permutation, and Combinatorial Problem Landscapes

In this paper, we evaluate the performance of four randomized optimization algorithms: Randomized Hill Climbing (RHC), Simulated Annealing (SA), Genetic Algorithms (GA), and MIMIC (Mutual Information Maximizing Input Clustering), across three distinct types of problems: binary, permutation, and combinatorial. We systematically compare these algorithms using a set of benchmark fitness functions that highlight the specific challenges and requirements of each problem category. Our study analyzes each algorithm's effectiveness based on key performance metrics, including solution quality, convergence speed, computational cost, and robustness. Results show that while MIMIC and GA excel in producing high-quality solutions for binary and combinatorial problems, their computational demands vary significantly. RHC and SA, while computationally less expensive, demonstrate limited performance in complex problem landscapes. The findings offer valuable insights into the trade-offs between different optimization strategies and provide practical guidance for selecting the appropriate algorithm based on the type of problems, accuracy requirements, and computational constraints.

Energy Efficiency Maximization for Movable Antenna-Enhanced System Based on Statistical CSI

This paper investigates an innovative movable antenna (MA)-enhanced multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system designed to enhance communication performance. We aim to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) under statistical channel state information (S-CSI) through a joint optimization of the transmit covariance matrix and the antenna position vectors (APVs). To solve the stochastic problem, we consider the large number of antennas scenario and resort to deterministic equivalent (DE) technology to reformulate the system EE w.r.t. the transmit variables, i.e., the transmit covariance matrix and APV, and the receive variables, i.e., the receive APV, respectively. Then, we propose an alternative optimization (AO) algorithm to update the transmit variables and the receive variables to maximize the system EE, respectively. Our numerical results reveal that, the proposed MA-enhanced system can significantly improve EE compared to several benchmark schemes and the optimal performance can be achieved with a finite size of movement regions for MAs.
