Combined tracer analysis for DESI 2024 BAO

This paper demonstrates how the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Data Release 1 (DR1) and future baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) analyses can optimally combine overlapping tracers (galaxies of distinct types) in the same redshift range. We make a unified catalog of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) and Emission Line Galaxies (ELGs) in the redshift range 0.8 < z < 1.1 and investigate the impact on the BAO constraints. DESI DR1 contains ~30% of the final DESI LRG sample and less than 25% of the final ELG sample, and the combination of LRGs and ELGs increases the number density and reduces the shot noise. We developed a pipeline to merge the overlapping tracers using galaxy bias as an approximately optimal weight and tested the pipeline on a suite of Abacus simulations, calibrated on the final version of the DESI Early Data Release. When applying our pipeline to the DESI DR1 catalog, we find an improvement in the BAO constraints of 11% for $α_\mathrm{iso}$ and ~7.0% for $α_\mathrm{AP}$ consistent with our findings in mock catalogs. Our analysis was integrated into the DESI DR1 BAO analysis to produce the LRG+ELG result in the 0.8 < z < 1.1 redshift bin, which provided the most precise BAO measurement from DESI DR1 with a 0.86% constraint on the BAO distance scale and a $9.1σ$ detection of the isotropic BAO feature.

EBS and in-beam $γ$-ray investigation of FCVA-prepared Cr$_2$O$_3$ targets for low-energy $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O fusion experiments

The Cr$_2$O$_3$ solid target for low-energy $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O fusion experiments was fabricated using filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) deposition. Its composition, oxygen areal density and impurity content were characterized by elastic backscattering spectrometry (EBS), and the impurity-induced background contributions were investigated by in-beam $γ$-ray spectroscopy. EBS results indicate that the Cr$_2$O$_3$ film exhibits good stoichiometry and uniformity, with $^{16}$O areal densities ranging from $(3.24-3.25)\times10^{17}$ atoms/cm$^2$. The EBS analysis reveals a carbon atomic fraction of approximately 1.25-1.29\% in the Cr$_2$O$_3$ layer, while a large amount of carbon impurities are also identified on the surface of Cr substrate. In-beam $γ$-ray spectra reveal prominent transitions associated with $^{27}$Al and $^{24}$Mg at 844, 1015, and 1369 keV, mainly originating from $^{12}$C+$^{16}$O fusion reactions induced by carbon impurities under $^{16}$O irradiation. Meanwhile, characteristic $γ$-rays emissions from evaporation channels of the $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O reaction, including $^{31}$S, $^{31}$P, and $^{28}$Si, were also observed and can be used to extract the $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O fusion cross sections. This work provides an experimental basis for the development of high-purity oxide targets and the optimization of target configurations for future low-background $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O fusion cross section measurements.

Apodex 1.1: Scaling Agentic Intelligence for Complex Work

General-purpose language models can reason and synthesize knowledge, but complex work also requires sustained interaction with files, information sources, and executable code, together with state maintenance, failure recovery, and verifiable delivery. We call this \emph{working capability}: sustained, verifiable progress toward a real-world objective. Apodex 1.1 develops this capability along two complementary dimensions. \emph{Environment Scaling} expands the diversity and verifiability of executable file, search, and code environments, while \emph{Agentic Coordination Scaling} trains agents to decompose long-horizon tasks, delegate parallel work, integrate asynchronous results, and replan. A shared execution harness and AgentOS maintain task state and provenance across tools and agents, and training turns environment trajectories and coordination traces into reliable behavior. Across complex professional work, finance, scientific research, mathematics, coding, and search, Apodex 1.1 reaches the leading performance band despite using a substantially smaller model than many frontier systems. The 35B-parameter Apodex 1.1 Mini further retains strong working capability in a locally deployable form. These results ground agentic intelligence in useful, verifiable work completed over time and advance our goal of building a \emph{Heavy-Duty Solver} for ambitious, long-running tasks.

MRI-guided cardiac radiotherapy using a 1.5 T MR-linac: surveying emerging patterns of care

Background: Cardiac tumours are rare and treated by surgical resections, which are complex, invasive and carry procedural risks. MRI-guided radiotherapy (MRgRT) noninvasively facilitates conformal dose deliveries using soft-tissue imaging and adaptive radiotherapy techniques. Aim: To assess the application of MRgRT for cardiac tumours, we conducted a patterns-of-care analysis with users of the 1.5T MR-linac. Materials & methods: A survey was distributed to users of the 1.5T MR-linac that treated patients with cardiac tumours. The survey included 30 questions concerning the patient cohort, imaging, treatment planning/simulation, radiotherapy treatment and treatment outcome. Results: Users from six international institutes completed the survey reporting twelve cardiac MRgRT treatments between 2021-2024. The median age[range] of the patients was 59[16-81] years with 50% of the cases concerning the treatment of primary tumours. The prescribed dose ranged between 30-60 Gy, with 30 Gy being prescribed the most (59%). In 75% of the cases, the treatment plans were delivered in five fractions with 6-8 Gy per fraction. Daily images were acquired with T1- and T2-weighted MRI and respiratory motion monitoring was performed in 92% of the cases using cine imaging. A single case was treated with intrafraction motion management using a novel vendor-provided gating solution on the MR-linac. Treatment outcomes were reported for 50% of the cases. All, but one case, attained local control using MRgRT without serious adverse events (grade$\geq$3). Conclusion: This study provides real-world insights into the feasibility and early outcomes to aid the development of cardiac MRgRT treatment recommendations and protocol harmonization.

A clear detection of proper motion confirms that the claimed $\mathbf{z\simeq32}$ galaxy candidate, "Capotauro'', is a Y-type brown dwarf

The compact red source ``Capotauro'', discovered in deep JWST imaging in 2025, has been suggested as a possible galaxy candidate at redshift $z\simeq32$ on account of its extreme NIRCam colours. However, given the lack of evidence that this source is spatially resolved, a very cool brown dwarf, at a distance consistent with the scale-height of the Milky Way stellar disc ($\simeq 500$ pc), provides an alternative explanation of the observed photometry. Here we exploit new medium-band NIRCam imaging obtained $\simeq 3.5$ years after the discovery data to test this hypothesis. Using filter-dependent point-spread-function fitting, a robust local relative astrometric frame defined by 68 compact reference sources, and a joint four-image injection-recovery analysis, we show that Capotauro has moved by $132 \pm 20$ mas over the 3.5-yr interval span of the observations, ruling out the possibility that it is an extragalactic source (galaxy, AGN, or supernova) at $> 6 σ$. The observed apparent proper motion is $(μ_ξ,μ_η)=(+9.4^{+6.4}_{-4.8},-35.6^{+5.1}_{-5.9})$ mas yr$^{-1}$, or $37.6^{+5.5}_{-5.6}$ mas yr$^{-1}$ in total. Through comparison of its photometric spectral energy distribution with empirical templates, we find that Capotauro is best described as a brown dwarf of spectral type Y$1.0\pm0.5$ ($T_{\rm eff}\approx350$ K) at a distance of $730\pm110$ pc (although the existing data and spectral templates are insufficient to rule out an even colder, later-type brown dwarf). Capotauro is thus one of the most distant Y dwarfs found to date, as expected given its discovery in a deep JWST extragalactic survey field. This result demonstrates the value of multi-epoch imaging for identifying substellar contaminants among the most extreme photometric-redshift candidates.

DESI DR2 Results IV: Alcock-Paczyński Measurements from the Lyman Alpha Forest and Cosmological Constraints

We present Alcock-Paczyński (AP) measurements from the full shape of Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) forest correlation functions measured from the second data release (DR2) of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). Our measurements include information from the Ly$α$ forest auto-correlation and its cross-correlation with quasars. We constrain the AP effect with $1\%$ precision at an effective redshift $z_\mathrm{eff}=2.33$, which is twice as tight as the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) constraint from the same data. When using the joint Ly$α$ AP and BAO results, we measure the ratios $D_\text{H}(z_\mathrm{eff})/r_\text{d}=8.600 \pm 0.066$ and $D_\text{M}(z_\mathrm{eff})/r_\text{d}=39.32 \pm 0.33$, where $D_\text{M}$ is the transverse comoving distance, $D_\text{H}$ is the Hubble distance, and $r_\text{d}$ is the sound horizon at the drag epoch. Assuming $Λ$CDM, Ly$α$ forest measurements combined with a nucleosynthesis prior produce a constraint on the Hubble constant $H_0=66.5\pm1.3\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}\,Mpc^{-1}}$. The Ly$α$ AP result corresponds to a matter fraction constraint $Ω_\text{m}=0.325\pm0.018$ in $Λ$CDM, which is $1.4σ$ higher than DESI BAO. This impacts the DESI results relative to the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), slightly reducing their discrepancy from $2.4σ$ to $2.2σ$. We present updated constraints on extended models using the joint DESI DR2 BAO and Ly$α$ forest full shape data, together with external data sets. When considering a time-evolving dark energy equation of state parametrized by $w_0$ and $w_a$, we find it is preferred over $Λ$CDM at $2.7σ$ for the combination of DESI and CMB data, and at $3.2σ$ when also including supernovae. With the new Ly$α$ AP measurement, DESI provides its most precise anchor for the expansion history at $z > 1$ in the matter-dominated Universe.

Narrow spectral artifact investigation and mitigation in LIGO data from the fourth LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observing run

We present efforts to identify, characterize, and mitigate narrow spectral artifacts in LIGO detector data during the fourth LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observing run. Narrow spectral artifacts in gravitational-wave detectors are non-astrophysical noise sources that can degrade searches for narrowband persistent gravitational waves. Identifying and, where possible, mitigating these noise sources is one of the core efforts of the LIGO Detector Characterization group. Key software tools have been updated and new tools deployed for the fourth LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observing run to facilitate investigations and data monitoring. We discuss these tool upgrades, and present several identified narrowband artifacts that have been successfully investigated and mitigated in LIGO data. Regardless of whether artifacts are mitigated or not, narrowband persistent gravitational-wave searches require information on which frequency bands contain non-astrophysical artifacts. Minimizing the number of bands containing non-astrophysical artifacts is essential to maximize the potential for discovery of a new class of gravitational-wave signals.

High-Precision Mass Measurements of 52Ni and 51Co Reveal Breakdown of the Isobaric Multiplet Mass Equation in the f p Shell

We performed high-precision mass measurements of the proton-rich nuclei $^{52}$Ni and $^{51}$Co with the LEBIT Penning trap at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). For $^{52}$Ni, a mass excess of $-22474.8(2.2)$~keV was determined, which is consistent with a recent storage-ring measurement at the Cooler-Storage Ring (CSRe) but has a factor 37 improved precision. For $^{51}$Co, we obtained a mass excess of $-27375.1(5.7)$~keV, agreeing with a recent CSRe result, while reducing the uncertainty by a factor~2. Combining our mass value for $^{52}$Ni with the known two-proton decay energy of $^{54}$Zn, we determined the mass excess of $^{54}$Zn to be $-6463(42)$~keV. These new mass values reveal a substantial breakdown of the isobaric mass multiplet equation for $A=52$ and $A=54$, and provide stringent benchmarks for isospin-symmetry-breaking effects in the proton-rich $fp$-shell, favoring theoretical descriptions that omit the Coulomb-exchange term.

Multi-band optical photometric variability of the blazar OJ 287 from 2015 to 2025

We present the most densely sampled multi-band optical photometric observations of the peculiar BL Lacertae object OJ 287 from 2015 to 2025 with a focus on its optical activity on diverse timescales. We present a total of 2296, 10927, 11484, and 2982 data points in B, V, R, and I bands, respectively. The densely sampled observations allow us to keep track of the source evolution that it has exhibited since the start of the predicted major optical flaring activity at the end of 2015. The study reveals clear and persistent bluer when brighter trends in both the long-term and short-term variations. Different bands were cross-correlated with discrete correlation functions, which peak at zero lag, implying co-spatial emission. Using eight optical spectra in the low flux states of OJ 287 taken from 2017 October 21 to 2017 November 22, from Steward Observatory, we estimate the central black hole mass to be at least 3.89 $\times \ \rm{10}^{9} \ \rm{M}_{\odot}$ from the [O III] line width. The emission mechanism of the binary black hole blazar, and its possible implication in various aspects of multi-messenger astronomy are briefly discussed.

Shock properties for solar energetic particle events with signatures of inverse velocity arrival

We present a detailed investigation of the shock properties associated with solar energetic particle (SEP) events that exhibit a concave (``nose-like'') shape in their energy spectrogram, characterized by inverse velocity arrival (IVA) of the particles, where high-energy particles arrive later than mid-energy ones. Using measurements from Solar Orbiter and Parker Solar Probe between 2018 and 2025, we identify 26 such SEP events and reconstruct the observed shock fronts in three dimensions. We derive shock parameters along the magnetic field lines connected to each spacecraft using kinematic modeling and coronal magnetohydrodynamic simulations. Our analysis indicates that IVA-SEP events arise due to the spatial and temporal evolution of the shock properties and magnetic connectivity. In most cases analyzed here, the magnetic connectivity starts on the flanks of CME-driven shocks, where shocks tend to be weak, and shifts toward the shock apex sampling stronger portions of the shock front. This evolution of the shock properties at the connected field lines likely leads to the delayed arrival of high-energy particles and the progressive hardening of the SEP energy spectrum, observed in some of the events. We find a correlation between the transition energy at which the IVA begins and the shock speed along the connected field lines, consistent with expectations from time-dependent diffusive shock acceleration. Our results underscore the importance of the evolving shock properties, magnetic connectivity, and instrumental sensitivity in shaping SEP intensity profiles and the formation of IVA signatures.

The VLT/ERIS grating vector Apodizing Phase Plate coronagraph

We describe the design, laboratory manufacture, and on-sky testing of the grating vector apodizing phase plate (gvAPP) coronagraph for the Enhanced Resolution Imager and Spectrograph (ERIS) on the Very Large Telescope. We used both laboratory measurements and on-sky observations to characterise the gvAPP in several different filters, from the K to the L band. In testing, the gvAPP reaches its design specification in the transmission of the optic with 90% in the K bands and 60% in the L band. While the gvAPP reaches its designed raw contrast performance of $1 \times 10^{-5}$, it does not reach the post-processed contrast of $5 \times 10^{-5}$ in on-sky observations. Electronic detector noise, due to the Airy core of the coronagraphic point spread function inducing cross-talk between the readout amplifiers, produces a repeated pattern within the coronagraphic regions of the gvAPP. Despite these limitations, we recommend the gvAPP as a tool for characterising substellar companions with known separations and position angles, which allow them to be placed in the coronagraphic dark holes for observations. The ERIS gvAPP's leakage term can also be used as a photometric reference for time series observations; however, we caution that the contrast performance may limit such studies to only the brightest targets. ERIS gvAPP data quality may be improved further with better modelling of detector electronic noise. This work is a pathfinder for Extremely Large Telescope instruments including METIS, which will include gvAPP coronagraphs with improved designs based on these results.

Nebular Phase Evolution of SN 2023ixf (I): From Circumstellar Infrared Echo to the onset of in-situ Dust Formation in a Type II Supernova

We present optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometric and spectroscopic observations of the Type II supernova SN 2023ixf spanning 150 to 750 days, combined with published early-time optical and infrared photometry, and JWST NIRSpec and MIRI spectroscopy, to disentangle circumstellar echo emission from newly formed internal dust. The combined dataset reveals an early infrared excess by 1.8 days, a broad secondary NIR rebrightening over about 89 to 175 days, progressive attenuation of the red wing of H-alpha from about 132 days, and CO emission detected by about 217 days. We identify the onset of H-alpha asymmetry as the first direct signature for internal dust formation, and modeling of the H-alpha profile over 140 to 418 days yields an internal silicate-equivalent dust mass of about 1.5e-6 to 6e-5 solar masses. By contrast, the early infrared evolution is best interpreted as echo-dominated: the 1.8 to 33.6 day excess is consistent with a radiative-flash infrared echo from pre-existing circumstellar dust, while the 89 to 175 day rebrightening is more naturally explained by a more extended echo arising from structured wind material. JWST spectral energy distribution modeling further reveals a multi-component infrared continuum in which a cold graphite component traces lingering echo emission, while a colder silicate-bearing component grows to about 2e-3 solar masses, providing the strongest late-time spectral energy distribution evidence that internal CDS/ejecta dust becomes substantial. SN 2023ixf therefore provides one of the clearest time-resolved case studies of dust signatures in a Type II supernova, linking early circumstellar reprocessing with increasingly important in situ dust formation.

Data Release 1 of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument

In 2021 May the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) collaboration began a 5-year spectroscopic redshift survey to produce a detailed map of the evolving three-dimensional structure of the universe between $z=0$ and $z\approx4$. DESI's principle scientific objectives are to place precise constraints on the equation of state of dark energy, the gravitationally driven growth of large-scale structure, and the sum of the neutrino masses, and to explore the observational signatures of primordial inflation. We present DESI Data Release 1 (DR1), which consists of all data acquired during the first 13 months of the DESI main survey, as well as a uniform reprocessing of the DESI Survey Validation data which was previously made public in the DESI Early Data Release. The DR1 main survey includes high-confidence redshifts for 18.7M objects, of which 13.1M are spectroscopically classified as galaxies, 1.6M as quasars, and 4M as stars, making DR1 the largest sample of extragalactic redshifts ever assembled. We summarize the DR1 observations, the spectroscopic data-reduction pipeline and data products, large-scale structure catalogs, value-added catalogs, and describe how to access and interact with the data. In addition to fulfilling its core cosmological objectives with unprecedented precision, we expect DR1 to enable a wide range of transformational astrophysical studies and discoveries.

A new wideband radio polarization observation of the Supernova Remnant G315.4$-$2.3

The supernova remnant (SNR) G315.4$-$2.3 (MSH 14$-$63 or RCW 86) exhibits strong emission across the electromagnetic spectrum. Radio polarization observations probe magnetic fields and will help to understand the evolution of the SNR. We aim to investigate the radio spectrum and magnetic field properties of the SNR. We observed G315.4$-$2.3 using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), covering the frequency range of 1.1-3.1 GHz. We performed rotation measure (RM) synthesis on the $Q$ and $U$ frequency cubes to obtain polarized intensity and RM. The regular component of the line-of-sight magnetic field was estimated from RM. The fractional polarization versus wavelength squared was used to constrain the properties of the turbulent magnetic field. We obtained image cubes of Stokes $I$, $Q$, and $U$, along with images of polarized intensity $P$, RM, and fractional polarization $p$. The radio spectra are very similar for different areas of the SNR. The foreground RM was estimated to be 55 rad m$^{-2}$, and the internal RM of most SNR areas is less than about 50 rad m$^{-2}$. The regular magnetic field along the line of sight was estimated to be about 1.4 $μ$G in the southwest, much smaller than the total magnetic field. For most parts of the southwest and northeast, $p$ is less than 8% and is nearly constant with $λ^2$. We estimated the ratio of turbulent to regular magnetic field to be larger than about 3. The scale of the turbulent magnetic field for some area in the northwest might be smaller than about 0.4 pc. The radio characteristics, including spectrum and turbulent magnetic field, are very similar in the northeast and southwest, even though the evolution is quite different for these two regions based on the current models. These should be taken into account for future modeling of the evolution of the SNR.

Extensive analysis of reconstruction algorithms for DESI 2024 baryon acoustic oscillations

Reconstruction of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) signal has been a standard procedure in BAO analyses over the past decade and has helped to improve the BAO parameter precision by a factor of ~2 on average. The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) BAO analysis for the first year (DR1) data uses the ``standard'' reconstruction framework, in which the displacement field is estimated from the observed density field by solving the linearized continuity equation in redshift space, and galaxy and random positions are shifted in order to partially remove nonlinearities. There are several approaches to solving for the displacement field in real survey data, including the multigrid (MG), iterative Fast Fourier Transform (iFFT), and iterative Fast Fourier Transform particle (iFFTP) algorithms. In this work, we analyze these algorithms and compare them with various metrics including two-point statistics and the displacement itself using realistic DESI mocks. We focus on three representative DESI samples, the emission line galaxies (ELG), quasars (QSO), and the bright galaxy sample (BGS), which cover the extreme redshifts and number densities, and potential wide-angle effects. We conclude that the MG and iFFT algorithms agree within 0.4% in post-reconstruction power spectrum on BAO scales with the RecSym convention, which does not remove large-scale redshift space distortions (RSDs), in all three tracers. The RecSym convention appears to be less sensitive to displacement errors than the RecIso convention, which attempts to remove large-scale RSDs. However, iFFTP deviates from the first two; thus, we recommend against using iFFTP without further development. In addition, we provide the optimal settings for reconstruction for five years of DESI observation. The analyses presented in this work pave the way for DESI DR1 analysis as well as future BAO analyses.

Beam-test evaluation of pre-production Low Gain Avalanche Detectors for the ATLAS High Granularity Timing Detector

The High Granularity Timing Detector (HGTD) will be installed in the ATLAS experiment as part of the Phase-II upgrade for the High Luminosity-Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). It will mitigate pile-up effects in the forward region, and measure per bunch luminosity. The design of HGTD is based on Low Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD) sensors. This paper presents the results of beam-test campaigns conducted at CERN and DESY in 2023 and 2024 on single LGADs from HGTD pre-production test structures, before and after neutron irradiation up to fluences of $2.5 \times 10^{15}~\mathrm{n_{eq}/cm^2}$. The tested LGADs can meet HGTD requirements in terms of charge collection, time resolution, and hit efficiency, even under HL-LHC end-of-life conditions, supporting their deployment in the final detector.

Measurement of $^{3,4}$He($K^-, π^0$)$^{3,4}_Λ$H reaction cross section and evaluation of hypertriton $Λ$ binding energy

Light $s$-shell hypernuclei ($^{3,4}_Λ\text{H}$) and their ground-state properties are crucial benchmarks in hypernuclear physics. In particular, comparing the production cross sections of $^{3}_Λ\text{H}$ and $^{4}_Λ\text{H}$ provides insights into the $ΛN$ interaction in different isospin configurations, which can help address recent discrepancies in the reported $Λ$ binding energy of hypertriton. We present the first measurement of the production cross sections for $^{3}_Λ\text{H}$ and $^{4}_Λ\text{H}$ using the in-flight $(K^-, π^0)$ reaction at a beam momentum of 1.0 GeV/$c$ with an identical experimental setup. The production cross sections in the laboratory frame, for the angular range from 0$^{\circ}$ to 20$^{\circ}$, are measured to be $15.0~\pm~2.6~(\text{stat.})~^{+2.4}_{-2.8}~(\text{syst.})~μ\text{b} $ and $49.9~\pm~2.1~(\text{stat.})~^{+7.8}_{-8.0}~(\text{syst.})~μ\text{b}$ for the ground-state of $^{3}_Λ\text{H}$ and $^{4}_Λ\text{H}$, respectively. Using the ratio of these cross sections and comparing it with theoretical calculations, we evaluate the $Λ$ binding energy of hypertriton, yielding a value consistent with the picture of a loosely bound system.
