Polynomial-time trace reconstruction in the low deletion rate regime

In the \emph{trace reconstruction problem}, an unknown source string $x \in \{0,1\}^n$ is transmitted through a probabilistic \emph{deletion channel} which independently deletes each bit with some fixed probability $δ$ and concatenates the surviving bits, resulting in a \emph{trace} of $x$. The problem is to reconstruct $x$ given access to independent traces. Trace reconstruction of arbitrary (worst-case) strings is a challenging problem, with the current state of the art for poly$(n)$-time algorithms being the 2004 algorithm of Batu et al. \cite{BKKM04}. This algorithm can reconstruct an arbitrary source string $x \in \{0,1\}^n$ in poly$(n)$ time provided that the deletion rate $δ$ satisfies $δ\leq n^{-(1/2 + \varepsilon)}$ for some $\varepsilon > 0$. In this work we improve on the result of \cite{BKKM04} by giving a poly$(n)$-time algorithm for trace reconstruction for any deletion rate $δ\leq n^{-(1/3 + \varepsilon)}$. Our algorithm works by alternating an alignment-based procedure, which we show effectively reconstructs portions of the source string that are not "highly repetitive", with a novel procedure that efficiently determines the length of highly repetitive subwords of the source string.

Coefficientwise total positivity of some matrices defined by linear recurrences

We exhibit a lower-triangular matrix of polynomials $T(a,c,d,e,f,g)$ in six indeterminates that appears empirically to be coefficientwise totally positive, and which includes as a special case the Eulerian triangle. We prove the coefficientwise total positivity of $T(a,c,0,e,0,0)$, which includes the reversed Stirling subset triangle.

Robust Detection of High-Frequency Signals at the Nanoscale

We present a method relying on shortcuts to adiabaticity to achieve quantum detection of high frequency signals at the nanoscale in a robust manner. More specifically, our protocol delivers tailored amplitudes and frequencies for control fields that, firstly, enable the coupling of the sensor with high-frequency signals and, secondly, minimise errors that would otherwise spoil the detection process. To exemplify the method, we particularise to detection of signals emitted by fast-rotating nuclear spins with nitrogen vacancy center quantum sensors. However, our protocol is straightforwardly applicable to other quantum devices such as silicon vacancy centers, germanium vacancy centers, or divacancies in silicon carbide.

A unified framework of continuous and discontinuous Galerkin methods for solving the incompressible Navier--Stokes equation

In this paper, we propose a unified numerical framework for the time-dependent incompressible Navier--Stokes equation which yields the $H^1$-, $H(\text{div})$-conforming, and discontinuous Galerkin methods with the use of different viscous stress tensors and penalty terms for pressure robustness. Under minimum assumption on Galerkin spaces, the semi- and fully-discrete stability is proved when a family of implicit Runge--Kutta methods are used for time discretization. Furthermore, we present a unified discussion on the penalty term. Numerical experiments are presented to compare our schemes with classical schemes in the literature in both unsteady and steady situations. It turns out that our scheme is competitive when applied to well-known benchmark problems such as Taylor--Green vortex, Kovasznay flow, potential flow, lid driven cavity flow, and the flow around a cylinder.

Distant Supervision for E-commerce Query Segmentation via Attention Network

The booming online e-commerce platforms demand highly accurate approaches to segment queries that carry the product requirements of consumers. Recent works have shown that the supervised methods, especially those based on deep learning, are attractive for achieving better performance on the problem of query segmentation. However, the lack of labeled data is still a big challenge for training a deep segmentation network, and the problem of Out-of-Vocabulary (OOV) also adversely impacts the performance of query segmentation. Different from query segmentation task in an open domain, e-commerce scenario can provide external documents that are closely related to these queries. Thus, to deal with the two challenges, we employ the idea of distant supervision and design a novel method to find contexts in external documents and extract features from these contexts. In this work, we propose a BiLSTM-CRF based model with an attention module to encode external features, such that external contexts information, which can be utilized naturally and effectively to help query segmentation. Experiments on two datasets show the effectiveness of our approach compared with several kinds of baselines.

Enhanced Few-shot Learning for Intrusion Detection in Railway Video Surveillance

Video surveillance is gaining increasing popularity to assist in railway intrusion detection in recent years. However, efficient and accurate intrusion detection remains a challenging issue due to: (a) limited sample number: only small sample size (or portion) of intrusive video frames is available; (b) low inter-scene dissimilarity: various railway track area scenes are captured by cameras installed in different landforms; (c) high intra-scene similarity: the video frames captured by an individual camera share a same backgound. In this paper, an efficient few-shot learning solution is developed to address the above issues. In particular, an enhanced model-agnostic meta-learner is trained using both the original video frames and segmented masks of track area extracted from the video. Moreover, theoretical analysis and engineering solutions are provided to cope with the highly similar video frames in the meta-model training phase. The proposed method is tested on realistic railway video dataset. Numerical results show that the enhanced meta-learner successfully adapts unseen scene with only few newly collected video frame samples, and its intrusion detection accuracy outperforms that of the standard randomly initialized supervised learning.

An Industry Evaluation of Embedding-based Entity Alignment

Embedding-based entity alignment has been widely investigated in recent years, but most proposed methods still rely on an ideal supervised learning setting with a large number of unbiased seed mappings for training and validation, which significantly limits their usage. In this study, we evaluate those state-of-the-art methods in an industrial context, where the impact of seed mappings with different sizes and different biases is explored. Besides the popular benchmarks from DBpedia and Wikidata, we contribute and evaluate a new industrial benchmark that is extracted from two heterogeneous knowledge graphs (KGs) under deployment for medical applications. The experimental results enable the analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of these alignment methods and the further discussion of suitable strategies for their industrial deployment.

NeuroCard: One Cardinality Estimator for All Tables

Query optimizers rely on accurate cardinality estimates to produce good execution plans. Despite decades of research, existing cardinality estimators are inaccurate for complex queries, due to making lossy modeling assumptions and not capturing inter-table correlations. In this work, we show that it is possible to learn the correlations across all tables in a database without any independence assumptions. We present NeuroCard, a join cardinality estimator that builds a single neural density estimator over an entire database. Leveraging join sampling and modern deep autoregressive models, NeuroCard makes no inter-table or inter-column independence assumptions in its probabilistic modeling. NeuroCard achieves orders of magnitude higher accuracy than the best prior methods (a new state-of-the-art result of 8.5$\times$ maximum error on JOB-light), scales to dozens of tables, while being compact in space (several MBs) and efficient to construct or update (seconds to minutes).

Wasserstein Distributionally Robust Optimization and Variation Regularization

Wasserstein distributionally robust optimization (DRO) has recently achieved empirical success for various applications in operations research and machine learning, owing partly to its regularization effect. Although connection between Wasserstein DRO and regularization has been established in several settings, existing results often require restrictive assumptions, such as smoothness or convexity, that are not satisfied for many problems. In this paper, we develop a general theory on the variation regularization effect of the Wasserstein DRO - a new form of regularization that generalizes total-variation regularization, Lipschitz regularization and gradient regularization. Our results cover possibly non-convex and non-smooth losses and losses on non-Euclidean spaces. Examples include multi-item newsvendor, portfolio selection, linear prediction, neural networks, manifold learning, and intensity estimation for Poisson processes, etc. As an application of our theory of variation regularization, we derive new generalization guarantees for adversarial robust learning.

Quantum Advantage in Cryptography with a Low-Connectivity Quantum Annealer

The application in cryptography of quantum algorithms for prime factorization fostered the interest in quantum computing. However, quantum computers, and particularly quantum annealers, can also be helpful to construct secure cryptographic keys. Indeed, finding robust Boolean functions for cryptography is an important problem in sequence ciphers, block ciphers, and hash functions, among others. Due to the super-exponential size $\mathcal{O}(2^{2^n})$ of the associated space, finding $n$-variable Boolean functions with global cryptographic constraints is computationally hard. This problem has already been addressed employing generic low-connected incoherent D-Wave quantum annealers. However, the limited connectivity of the Chimera graph, together with the exponential growth in the complexity of the Boolean function design problem, limit the problem scalability. Here, we propose a special-purpose coherent quantum annealing architecture with three couplers per qubit, designed to optimally encode the bent function design problem. A coherent quantum annealer with this tree-type architecture has the potential to solve the $8$-variable bent function design problem, which is classically unsolved, with only $127$ physical qubits and $126$ couplers. This paves the way to reach useful quantum supremacy within the framework of quantum annealing for cryptographic purposes.

Hedging in games: Faster convergence of external and swap regrets

We consider the setting where players run the Hedge algorithm or its optimistic variant to play an $n$-action game repeatedly for $T$ rounds. 1) For two-player games, we show that the regret of optimistic Hedge decays at $\tilde{O}( 1/T ^{5/6} )$, improving the previous bound $O(1/T^{3/4})$ by Syrgkanis, Agarwal, Luo and Schapire (NIPS'15) 2) In contrast, we show that the convergence rate of vanilla Hedge is no better than $\tildeΩ(1/ \sqrt{T})$, addressing an open question posted in Syrgkanis, Agarwal, Luo and Schapire (NIPS'15). For general m-player games, we show that the swap regret of each player decays at rate $\tilde{O}(m^{1/2} (n/T)^{3/4})$ when they combine optimistic Hedge with the classical external-to-internal reduction of Blum and Mansour (JMLR'07). The algorithm can also be modified to achieve the same rate against itself and a rate of $\tilde{O}(\sqrt{n/T})$ against adversaries. Via standard connections, our upper bounds also imply faster convergence to coarse correlated equilibria in two-player games and to correlated equilibria in multiplayer games.

Information Theoretic Counterfactual Learning from Missing-Not-At-Random Feedback

Counterfactual learning for dealing with missing-not-at-random data (MNAR) is an intriguing topic in the recommendation literature since MNAR data are ubiquitous in modern recommender systems. Missing-at-random (MAR) data, namely randomized controlled trials (RCTs), are usually required by most previous counterfactual learning methods for debiasing learning. However, the execution of RCTs is extraordinarily expensive in practice. To circumvent the use of RCTs, we build an information-theoretic counterfactual variational information bottleneck (CVIB), as an alternative for debiasing learning without RCTs. By separating the task-aware mutual information term in the original information bottleneck Lagrangian into factual and counterfactual parts, we derive a contrastive information loss and an additional output confidence penalty, which facilitates balanced learning between the factual and counterfactual domains. Empirical evaluation on real-world datasets shows that our CVIB significantly enhances both shallow and deep models, which sheds light on counterfactual learning in recommendation that goes beyond RCTs.

Improving Text Generation Evaluation with Batch Centering and Tempered Word Mover Distance

Recent advances in automatic evaluation metrics for text have shown that deep contextualized word representations, such as those generated by BERT encoders, are helpful for designing metrics that correlate well with human judgements. At the same time, it has been argued that contextualized word representations exhibit sub-optimal statistical properties for encoding the true similarity between words or sentences. In this paper, we present two techniques for improving encoding representations for similarity metrics: a batch-mean centering strategy that improves statistical properties; and a computationally efficient tempered Word Mover Distance, for better fusion of the information in the contextualized word representations. We conduct numerical experiments that demonstrate the robustness of our techniques, reporting results over various BERT-backbone learned metrics and achieving state of the art correlation with human ratings on several benchmarks.

Time-optimal variational control of bright matter-wave soliton

Motivated by recent experiments, we present the time-optimal variational control of bright matter-wave soliton trapped in a quasi-one-dimensional harmonic trap by manipulating the atomic attraction through Feshbach resonances. More specially, we first apply a time-dependent variational method to derive the motion equation for capturing the soliton's shape, and secondly combine inverse engineering with optimal control theory to design the atomic interaction for implementing time-optimal decompression. Since the time-optimal solution is of bang-bang type, the smooth regularization is further adopted to smooth the on-off controller out, thus avoiding the heating and atom loss, induced from magnetic field ramp across a Feshbach resonance in practice.

Distributed High-dimensional Regression Under a Quantile Loss Function

This paper studies distributed estimation and support recovery for high-dimensional linear regression model with heavy-tailed noise. To deal with heavy-tailed noise whose variance can be infinite, we adopt the quantile regression loss function instead of the commonly used squared loss. However, the non-smooth quantile loss poses new challenges to high-dimensional distributed estimation in both computation and theoretical development. To address the challenge, we transform the response variable and establish a new connection between quantile regression and ordinary linear regression. Then, we provide a distributed estimator that is both computationally and communicationally efficient, where only the gradient information is communicated at each iteration. Theoretically, we show that, after a constant number of iterations, the proposed estimator achieves a near-oracle convergence rate without any restriction on the number of machines. Moreover, we establish the theoretical guarantee for the support recovery. The simulation analysis is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

Angular Independent Photonic Pigments via the Controlled Micellization of Amphiphilic Bottlebrush Block Copolymers

Photonic materials with angular independent structural colour are highly desirable because they offer the broad viewing angles required for application as colorants in paints, cosmetics, textiles or displays. However, they are challenging to fabricate as they require isotropic nanoscale architectures with only short-range correlation. In this article, porous microparticles with such a structure are produced in a single, scalable step from an amphiphilic bottlebrush block copolymer. This is achieved by exploiting a novel controlled micellization self-assembly mechanism within emulsified toluene-in-water droplets. By restricting water permeation through the droplet interface, the size of the pores can be precisely addressed, resulting in structurally coloured pigments. Furthermore, the reflected colour can be tuned to reflect across the full visible spectrum using only a single polymer (Mn = 290 kDa) by altering the initial emulsification conditions. Such photonic pigments have several key advantages over their crystalline analogues, as they provide isotropic structural coloration that suppresses iridescence and improves colour purity without the need for either refractive index matching or the inclusion of a broadband absorber.
