Qubit gates with simultaneous transport in double quantum dots

A single electron spin in a double quantum dot in a magnetic field is considered in terms of a four-level system. By describing the electron motion between the potential minima by spin-conserving tunneling and spin flip caused by a spin-orbit coupling, we inversely engineer faster-than-adiabatic state manipulation operations based on the geometry of four-dimensional (4D) rotations. In particular, we show how to transport a qubit among the quantum dots performing simultaneously a required spin rotation.

Experimental realization of an intrinsic magnetic topological insulator

Intrinsic magnetic topological insulator (TI) is a stoichiometric magnetic compound possessing both inherent magnetic order and topological electronic states. Such a material can provide a shortcut to various novel topological quantum effects but remains elusive experimentally so far. Here, we report the experimental realization of high-quality thin films of an intrinsic magnetic TI---MnBi$_2$Te$_4$---by alternate growth of a Bi$_2$Te$_3$ quintuple-layer and a MnTe bilayer with molecular beam epitaxy. The material shows the archetypical Dirac surface states in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and is demonstrated to be an antiferromagnetic topological insulator with ferromagnetic surfaces by magnetic and transport measurements as well as first-principles calculations. The unique magnetic and topological electronic structures and their interplays enable the material to embody rich quantum phases such as quantum anomalous Hall insulators and axion insulators in a well-controlled way.

Reliable Gene Mutation Prediction in Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma through Multi-classifier Multi-objective Radiogenomics Model

Genetic studies have identified associations between gene mutations and clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). Because the complete gene mutational landscape cannot be characterized through biopsy and sequencing assays for each patient, non-invasive tools are needed to determine the mutation status for tumors. Radiogenomics may be an attractive alternative tool to identify disease genomics by analyzing amounts of features extracted from medical images. Most current radiogenomics predictive models are built based on a single classifier and trained through a single objective. However, since many classifiers are available, selecting an optimal model is difficult. On the other hand, a single objective may not be a good measure to guide model training. We proposed a new multi-classifier multi-objective (MCMO) radiogenomics predictive model. To obtain more reliable prediction results, similarity-based sensitivity and specificity were defined and considered as the two objective functions simultaneously during training. To take advantage of different classifiers, the evidential reasoning (ER) approach was used for fusing the output of each classifier. Additionally, a new similarity-based multi-objective optimization algorithm (SMO) was developed for training the MCMO to predict ccRCC related gene mutations (VHL, PBRM1 and BAP1). Preliminary results revealed an association between some quantitative computed tomography (CT) features and underlying mutations. Using the proposed MCMO model, we achieved a predictive area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) over 0.86 for VHL, PBRM1, and BAP1 genes with balanced sensitivity and specificity. Furthermore, MCMO outperformed all the individual classifiers and yielded more reliable results than other optimization algorithms and commonly used fusion strategies.

Model Risk in Real Option Valuation

We introduce a general decision tree framework to value an option to invest/divest in a project, focusing on the model risk inherent in the assumptions made by standard real option valuation methods. We examine how real option values depend on the dynamics of project value and investment costs, the frequency of exercise opportunities, the size of the project relative to initial wealth, the investor's risk tolerance (and how it changes with wealth) and several other choices about model structure. For instance, contrary to stylized facts from previous literature, real option values can actually decrease with the volatility of the underlying project value and increase with investment costs.

Learning to Compose over Tree Structures via POS Tags

Recursive Neural Network (RecNN), a type of models which compose words or phrases recursively over syntactic tree structures, has been proven to have superior ability to obtain sentence representation for a variety of NLP tasks. However, RecNN is born with a thorny problem that a shared compositional function for each node of trees can't capture the complex semantic compositionality so that the expressive power of model is limited. In this paper, in order to address this problem, we propose Tag-Guided HyperRecNN/TreeLSTM (TG-HRecNN/TreeLSTM), which introduces hypernetwork into RecNNs to take as inputs Part-of-Speech (POS) tags of word/phrase and generate the semantic composition parameters dynamically. Experimental results on five datasets for two typical NLP tasks show proposed models both obtain significant improvement compared with RecNN and TreeLSTM consistently. Our TG-HTreeLSTM outperforms all existing RecNN-based models and achieves or is competitive with state-of-the-art on four sentence classification benchmarks. The effectiveness of our models is also demonstrated by qualitative analysis.

Safer Classification by Synthesis

The discriminative approach to classification using deep neural networks has become the de-facto standard in various fields. Complementing recent reservations about safety against adversarial examples, we show that conventional discriminative methods can easily be fooled to provide incorrect labels with very high confidence to out of distribution examples. We posit that a generative approach is the natural remedy for this problem, and propose a method for classification using generative models. At training time, we learn a generative model for each class, while at test time, given an example to classify, we query each generator for its most similar generation, and select the class corresponding to the most similar one. Our approach is general and can be used with expressive models such as GANs and VAEs. At test time, our method accurately "knows when it does not know," and provides resilience to out of distribution examples while maintaining competitive performance for standard examples.

Stacked Cross Attention for Image-Text Matching

In this paper, we study the problem of image-text matching. Inferring the latent semantic alignment between objects or other salient stuff (e.g. snow, sky, lawn) and the corresponding words in sentences allows to capture fine-grained interplay between vision and language, and makes image-text matching more interpretable. Prior work either simply aggregates the similarity of all possible pairs of regions and words without attending differentially to more and less important words or regions, or uses a multi-step attentional process to capture limited number of semantic alignments which is less interpretable. In this paper, we present Stacked Cross Attention to discover the full latent alignments using both image regions and words in a sentence as context and infer image-text similarity. Our approach achieves the state-of-the-art results on the MS-COCO and Flickr30K datasets. On Flickr30K, our approach outperforms the current best methods by 22.1% relatively in text retrieval from image query, and 18.2% relatively in image retrieval with text query (based on Recall@1). On MS-COCO, our approach improves sentence retrieval by 17.8% relatively and image retrieval by 16.6% relatively (based on Recall@1 using the 5K test set). Detecting strong signals in gene perturbation experiments: An adaptive approach with power guarantee and FDR control

The perturbation of a transcription factor should affect the expression levels of its direct targets. However, not all genes showing changes in expression are direct targets. To increase the chance of detecting direct targets, we propose a modified two-group model where the null group corresponds to genes which are not direct targets, but can have small non-zero effects. We model the behaviour of genes from the null set by a Gaussian distribution with unknown variance $τ^2$, and we discuss and compare three methods which adaptively estimate $τ^2$ from the data: the iterated empirical Bayes estimator, the truncated MLE and the central moment matching estimator. We conduct a detailed analysis of the properties of the iterated EB estimate which has the best performance in the simulations. In particular, we provide theoretical guarantee of its good performance under mild conditions. We provide simulations comparing the new modeling approach with existing methods, and the new approach shows more stable and better performance under different situations. We also apply it to a real data set from gene knock-down experiments and obtained better results compared with the original two-group model testing for non-zero effects.

How LinkedIn Economic Graph Bonds Information and Product: Applications in LinkedIn Salary

The LinkedIn Salary product was launched in late 2016 with the goal of providing insights on compensation distribution to job seekers, so that they can make more informed decisions when discovering and assessing career opportunities. The compensation insights are provided based on data collected from LinkedIn members and aggregated in a privacy-preserving manner. Given the simultaneous desire for computing robust, reliable insights and for having insights to satisfy as many job seekers as possible, a key challenge is to reliably infer the insights at the company level when there is limited or no data at all. We propose a two-step framework that utilizes a novel, semantic representation of companies (Company2vec) and a Bayesian statistical model to address this problem. Our approach makes use of the rich information present in the LinkedIn Economic Graph, and in particular, uses the intuition that two companies are likely to be similar if employees are very likely to transition from one company to the other and vice versa. We compute embeddings for companies by analyzing the LinkedIn members' company transition data using machine learning algorithms, then compute pairwise similarities between companies based on these embeddings, and finally incorporate company similarities in the form of peer company groups as part of the proposed Bayesian statistical model to predict insights at the company level. We perform extensive validation using several different evaluation techniques, and show that we can significantly increase the coverage of insights while, in fact, even improving the quality of the obtained insights. For example, we were able to compute salary insights for 35 times as many title-region-company combinations in the U.S. as compared to previous work, corresponding to 4.9 times as many monthly active users. Finally, we highlight the lessons learned from deployment of our system.

Stabilization with a Specified External Gain for Linear MIMO Systems and Its Applications to Control of Networked Systems

This paper studies a stabilization problem for linear MIMO systems subject to external perturbation that further requires the closed-loop system render a specified gain from the external perturbation to the output. The problem arises from control of networked systems, in particular, robust output synchronization of heterogeneous linear MIMO multi-agent systems via output feedback/communication. We propose a new approach that converts a class of MIMO systems into a normal form via repeated singular value decomposition and prove that a stabilization controller with a specified external gain can be explicitly constructed for the normal form. Two scenarios with static state feedback and dynamic output feedback are investigated. By integrating the reference model and internal model techniques, the robust output synchronization problem for MIMO multi-agent systems is converted into a stabilization problem with a specified externalgain and solved by the developed approach.

Optimal Design of Process Flexibility for General Production Systems

Process flexibility is widely adopted as an effective strategy for responding to uncertain demand. Many algorithms for constructing sparse flexibility designs with good theoretical guarantees have been developed for balanced and symmetrical production systems. These systems assume that the number of plants equals the number of products, that supplies have the same capacity, and that demands are independently and identically distributed. In this paper, we relax these assumptions and consider a general class of production systems. We construct a simple flexibility design to fulfill $(1-ε)$-fraction of expected demand with high probability (w.h.p.) where the average degree is $O(\ln(1/ε))$. To motivate our construction, we first consider a natural weighted probabilistic construction from Chou et al. (2011) where the degree of each node is proportional to its expected capacity. However, this strategy is shown to be sub-optimal. To obtain an optimal construction, we develop a simple yet effective thresholding scheme. The analysis of our approach extends the classical analysis of expander graphs by overcoming several technical difficulties. Our approach may prove useful in other applications that require expansion properties of graphs with non-uniform degree sequences.

A Novel Framework for Recurrent Neural Networks with Enhancing Information Processing and Transmission between Units

This paper proposes a novel framework for recurrent neural networks (RNNs) inspired by the human memory models in the field of cognitive neuroscience to enhance information processing and transmission between adjacent RNNs' units. The proposed framework for RNNs consists of three stages that is working memory, forget, and long-term store. The first stage includes taking input data into sensory memory and transferring it to working memory for preliminary treatment. And the second stage mainly focuses on proactively forgetting the secondary information rather than the primary in the working memory. And finally, we get the long-term store normally using some kind of RNN's unit. Our framework, which is generalized and simple, is evaluated on 6 datasets which fall into 3 different tasks, corresponding to text classification, image classification and language modelling. Experiments reveal that our framework can obviously improve the performance of traditional recurrent neural networks. And exploratory task shows the ability of our framework of correctly forgetting the secondary information.

Damping Effect on PageRank Distribution

This work extends the personalized PageRank model invented by Brin and Page to a family of PageRank models with various damping schemes. The goal with increased model variety is to capture or recognize a larger number of types of network activities, phenomena and propagation patterns. The response in PageRank distribution to variation in damping mechanism is then characterized analytically, and further estimated quantitatively on 6 large real-world link graphs. The study leads to new observation and empirical findings. It is found that the difference in the pattern of PageRank vector responding to parameter variation by each model among the 6 graphs is relatively smaller than the difference among 3 particular models used in the study on each of the graphs. This suggests the utility of model variety for differentiating network activities and propagation patterns. The quantitative analysis of the damping mechanisms over multiple damping models and parameters is facilitated by a highly efficient algorithm, which calculates all PageRank vectors at once via a commonly shared, spectrally invariant subspace. The spectral space is found to be of low dimension for each of the real-world graphs.

Nonlinear Quantum Rabi Model in Trapped Ions

We study the nonlinear dynamics of trapped-ion models far away from the Lamb-Dicke regime. This nonlinearity induces a sideband cooling blockade, stopping the propagation of quantum information along the Hilbert space of the Jaynes-Cummings and quantum Rabi models. We compare the linear and nonlinear cases of these models in the ultrastrong and deep strong coupling regimes. Moreover, we propose a scheme that simulates the nonlinear quantum Rabi model in all coupling regimes. This can be done via off-resonant nonlinear red and blue sideband interactions, yielding applications as a dynamical quantum filter.

Fast and robust control of two interacting spins

Rapid preparation, manipulation, and correction of spin states with high fidelity are requisite for quantum information processing and quantum computing. In this paper, we propose a fast and robust approach for controlling two spins with Heisenberg and Ising interactions. By using the concept of shortcuts to adiabaticity, we first inverse design the driving magnetic fields for achieving fast spin flip or generating the entangled Bell state, and further optimize them with respect to the error and fluctuation. In particular, the designed shortcut protocols can efficiently suppress the unwanted transition or control error induced by anisotropic antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange. Several examples and comparisons are illustrated, showing the advantages of our methods. Finally, we emphasize that the results can be naturally extended to multiple interacting spins and other quantum systems in an analogous fashion.

Non-stationary Stochastic Optimization under $L_{p,q}$-Variation Measures

We consider a non-stationary sequential stochastic optimization problem, in which the underlying cost functions change over time under a variation budget constraint. We propose an $L_{p,q}$-variation functional to quantify the change, which yields less variation for dynamic function sequences whose changes are constrained to short time periods or small subsets of input domain. Under the $L_{p,q}$-variation constraint, we derive both upper and matching lower regret bounds for smooth and strongly convex function sequences, which generalize previous results in Besbes et al. (2015). Furthermore, we provide an upper bound for general convex function sequences with noisy gradient feedback, which matches the optimal rate as $p\to\infty$. Our results reveal some surprising phenomena under this general variation functional, such as the curse of dimensionality of the function domain. The key technical novelties in our analysis include affinity lemmas that characterize the distance of the minimizers of two convex functions with bounded Lp difference, and a cubic spline based construction that attains matching lower bounds.

Deep Reinforcement Learning to Acquire Navigation Skills for Wheel-Legged Robots in Complex Environments

Mobile robot navigation in complex and dynamic environments is a challenging but important problem. Reinforcement learning approaches fail to solve these tasks efficiently due to reward sparsities, temporal complexities and high-dimensionality of sensorimotor spaces which are inherent in such problems. We present a novel approach to train action policies to acquire navigation skills for wheel-legged robots using deep reinforcement learning. The policy maps height-map image observations to motor commands to navigate to a target position while avoiding obstacles. We propose to acquire the multifaceted navigation skill by learning and exploiting a number of manageable navigation behaviors. We also introduce a domain randomization technique to improve the versatility of the training samples. We demonstrate experimentally a significant improvement in terms of data-efficiency, success rate, robustness against irrelevant sensory data, and also the quality of the maneuver skills.

Reinforcement Learning based QoS/QoE-aware Service Function Chaining in Software-Driven 5G Slices

With the ever growing diversity of devices and applications that will be connected to 5G networks, flexible and agile service orchestration with acknowledged QoE that satisfies end-user's functional and QoS requirements is necessary. SDN (Software-Defined Networking) and NFV (Network Function Virtualization) are considered key enabling technologies for 5G core networks. In this regard, this paper proposes a reinforcement learning based QoS/QoE-aware Service Function Chaining (SFC) in SDN/NFV-enabled 5G slices. First, it implements a lightweight QoS information collector based on LLDP, which works in a piggyback fashion on the southbound interface of the SDN controller, to enable QoS-awareness. Then, a DQN (Deep Q Network) based agent framework is designed to support SFC in the context of NFV. The agent takes into account the QoE and QoS as key aspects to formulate the reward so that it is expected to maximize QoE while respecting QoS constraints. The experiment results show that this framework exhibits good performance in QoE provisioning and QoS requirements maintenance for SFC in dynamic network environments.
