Electronic Raman Scattering On Individual Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes

We report experimental measurements of electronic Raman scattering under resonant conditions by electrons in individual single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The inelastic Raman scattering at low frequency range reveals a single particle excitation feature and the dispersion of electronic structure around the center of Brillouin zone of a semiconducting SWNT (14, 13) is extracted.

Statistical Decision Making for Optimal Budget Allocation in Crowd Labeling

In crowd labeling, a large amount of unlabeled data instances are outsourced to a crowd of workers. Workers will be paid for each label they provide, but the labeling requester usually has only a limited amount of the budget. Since data instances have different levels of labeling difficulty and workers have different reliability, it is desirable to have an optimal policy to allocate the budget among all instance-worker pairs such that the overall labeling accuracy is maximized. We consider categorical labeling tasks and formulate the budget allocation problem as a Bayesian Markov decision process (MDP), which simultaneously conducts learning and decision making. Using the dynamic programming (DP) recurrence, one can obtain the optimal allocation policy. However, DP quickly becomes computationally intractable when the size of the problem increases. To solve this challenge, we propose a computationally efficient approximate policy, called optimistic knowledge gradient policy. Our MDP is a quite general framework, which applies to both pull crowdsourcing marketplaces with homogeneous workers and push marketplaces with heterogeneous workers. It can also incorporate the contextual information of instances when they are available. The experiments on both simulated and real data show that the proposed policy achieves a higher labeling accuracy than other existing policies at the same budget level.

The catalogues and mid-infrared environment of Interstellar OH Masers

Data for a number of OH maser lines have been collected from surveys. The posi- tions are compared to recent mid-infrared (MIR) surveys such as Spitzer-GLIMPSE and WISE, restricting the comparison to point sources. The colors and intensities of the IR sources are compared. There are many 18 cm OH masers, but far fewer in lines arising from higher energy levels. We also make a comparison with the 5 cm Class II methanol masers. We have divided the results into 3 subsamples: those associated with OH masers only, those associated with OH masers and Class II methanol masers, and those only associated with Class II methanol masers. There are no obvious dif- ferences in the color-color or color-magnitude results for the GLIMPSE point sources. However, according to the results from the WISE 22 μm survey, the sources associ- ated with OH masers are brighter than those associated with methanol masers. We interpret the presence of OH and methanol masers mark the locations of regions where stars are forming. The OH masers are located on the borders of sharp features found in the IR. These are referred to as bubbles. If the OH masers mark the positions of protostars, the result provides indirect evidence for triggered star formation caused by the expansion of the bubbles.

Spin-polarized currents generated by magnetic Fe atomic chains

Fe-based devices are widely used in spintronics because of high spin-polarization and magnetism. In this work, free-standing Fe atomic chains were proposed to be used as the thinnest wires to generate spin-polarized currents due to the spin-polarized energy bands. By ab initio calculations, the zigzag structure was found more stable than the wide-angle zigzag structure and has higher ratio of spin-up and spin-down currents. By our theoretical prediction, Fe atomic chains have sufficiently long thermal lifetime only at T<=150 K, while C atomic chains are very stable even at T=1000 K. This result means that the spintronic devices based on Fe chains could only work at low temperature. A system constructed by a short Fe chain sandwiched between two graphene electrodes was proposed as a spin-polarized current generator, while a C chain does not have such property. The present work may be instructive and meaningful to further practical applications based on recent technical development on the preparation of metal atomic chains [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 107, 9055 (2010)].

Fast shuttling of a trapped ion in the presence of noise

We theoretically investigate the motional excitation of a single ion caused by spring-constant and position uctuations of a harmonic trap during trap shuttling processes. A detailed study of the sensitivity on noise for several transport protocols and noise spectra is provided. The effect of slow spring-constant drifts is also analyzed. Trap trajectories that minimize the excitation are designed combining invariant-based inverse engineering, perturbation theory, and optimal control.

Shortcuts to adiabaticity in three-level systems using Lie transforms

Sped-up protocols (shortcuts to adiabaticity) that drive a system quickly to the same populations than a slow adiabatic process may involve Hamiltonian terms difficult to realize in practice. We use the dynamical symmetry of the Hamiltonian to find, by means of Lie transforms, alternative Hamiltonians that achieve the same goals without the problematic terms. We apply this technique to three-level systems (two interacting bosons in a double well, and beam splitters with two and three output channels) driven by Hamiltonians that belong to the four-dimensional algebra U3S3.

Imaging the Electron-Boson Coupling in Superconducting FeSe

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy has been used to reveal signatures of a bosonic mode in the local quasiparticle density of states of superconducting FeSe films. The mode appears below Tc as a 'dip-hump' feature at energy Ω~ 4.7 kBTc beyond the superconducting gap Δ. Spectra on strained regions of the FeSe films reveal simultaneous decreases in Δand Ω. This contrasts with all previous reports on other high-Tc superconductors, where Δlocally anti-correlates with Ω. A local strong coupling model is found to reconcile the discrepancy well, and to provide a unified picture of the electron-boson coupling in unconventional superconductors.

Dichotomy of Electronic Structure and Superconductivity between Single-Layer and Double-Layer FeSe/SrTiO3 Films

The latest discovery of possible high temperature superconductivity in the single-layer FeSe film grown on a SrTiO3 substrate, together with the observation of its unique electronic structure and nodeless superconducting gap, has generated much attention. Initial work also found that, while the single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 film exhibits a clear signature of superconductivity, the double-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 film shows an insulating behavior. Such a dramatic difference between the single-layer and double-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 films is surprising and the underlying origin remains unclear. Here we report our comparative study between the single-layer and double-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 films by performing a systematic angle-resolved photoemission study on the samples annealed in vacuum. We find that, like the single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 film, the as-prepared double-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 film is insulating and possibly magnetic, thus establishing a universal existence of the magnetic phase in the FeSe/SrTiO3 films. In particular, the double-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 film shows a quite different doping behavior from the single-layer film in that it is hard to get doped and remains in the insulating state under an extensive annealing condition. The difference originates from the much reduced doping efficiency in the bottom FeSe layer of the double-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 film from the FeSe-SrTiO3 interface. These observations provide key insights in understanding the origin of superconductivity and the doping mechanism in the FeSe/SrTiO3 films. The property disparity between the single-layer and double-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 films may facilitate to fabricate electronic devices by making superconducting and insulating components on the same substrate under the same condition.

Experimental observation of Dirac-like surface states and topological phase transition in Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Te(111) films

The surface of a topological crystalline insulator (TCI) carries an even number of Dirac cones protected by crystalline symmetry. We epitaxially grew high quality Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Te(111) films and investigated the TCI phase by in-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Te(111) films undergo a topological phase transition from trivial insulator to TCI via increasing the Sn/Pb ratio, accompanied by a crossover from n-type to p-type doping. In addition, a hybridization gap is opened in the surface states when the thickness of film is reduced to the two-dimensional limit. The work demonstrates an approach to manipulating the topological properties of TCI, which is of importance for future fundamental research and applications based on TCI.

Electronic Evidence of an Insulator-Superconductor Transition in Single-Layer FeSe/SrTiO3 Films

In high temperature cuprate superconductors, it is now generally agreed that the parent compound is a Mott insulator and superconductivity is realized by doping the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator. In the iron-based superconductors, however, the parent compound is mostly antiferromagnetic metal, raising a debate on whether an appropriate starting point should go with an itinerant picture or a localized picture. It has been proposed theoretically that the parent compound of the iron-based superconductors may be on the verge of a Mott insulator, but so far no clear experimental evidence of doping-induced Mott transition has been available. Here we report an electronic evidence of an insulator-superconductor transition observed in the single-layer FeSe films grown on the SrTiO3 substrate. By taking angle-resolved photoemission measurements on the electronic structure and energy gap, we have identified a clear evolution of an insulator to a superconductor with the increasing doping. This observation represents the first example of an insulator-superconductor transition via doping observed in the iron-based superconductors. It indicates that the parent compound of the iron-based superconductors is in proximity of a Mott insulator and strong electron correlation should be considered in describing the iron-based superconductors.

HERMES: A Hierarchical Broadcast-Based Silicon Photonic Interconnect for Scalable Many-Core Systems

Optical interconnection networks, as enabled by recent advances in silicon photonic device and fabrication technology, have the potential to address on-chip and off-chip communication bottlenecks in many-core systems. Although several designs have shown superior power efficiency and performance compared to electrical alternatives, these networks will not scale to the thousands of cores required in the future. In this paper, we introduce Hermes, a hybrid network composed of an optimized broadcast for power-efficient low-latency global-scale coordination and circuit-switch sub-networks for high-throughput data delivery. This network will scale for use in thousand core chip systems. At the physical level, SoI-based adiabatic coupler has been designed to provide low-loss and compact optical power splitting. Based on the adiabatic coupler, a topology based on 2-ary folded butterfly is designed to provide linear power division in a thousand core layout with minimal cross-overs. To address the network agility and provide for efficient use of optical bandwidth, a flow control and routing mechanism is introduced to dynamically allocate bandwidth and provide fairness usage of network resources. At the system level, bloom filter-based filtering for localization of communication are designed for reducing global traffic. In addition, a novel greedy-based data and workload migration are leveraged to increase the locality of communication in a NUCA (non-uniform cache access) architecture. First order analytic evaluation results have indicated that Hermes is scalable to at least 1024 cores and offers significant performance improvement and power savings over prior silicon photonic designs.

Dirac edges of fractal magnetic minibands in graphene with hexagonal moire superlattices

We find a systematic reappearance of massive Dirac features at the edges of consecutive minibands formed at magnetic fields B_{p/q}= pϕ_0/(qS) providing rational magnetic flux through a unit cell of the moire superlattice created by a hexagonal substrate for electrons in graphene. The Dirac-type features in the minibands at B=B_{p/q} determine a hierarchy of gaps in the surrounding fractal spectrum, and show that these minibands have topological insulator properties. Using the additional $q$-fold degeneracy of magnetic minibands at B_{p/q}, we trace the hierarchy of the gaps to their manifestation in the form of incompressible states upon variation of the carrier density and magnetic field.

Prediction of temperature distribution in turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection

A quantitative theory is developed for the vertical mean temperature profile (MTP) in turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection (RBC), which explains the recent experimental and numerical observations of a logarithmic law by Ahlers et al.(Phys. Rev. Lett., 2012). A multi-layer model is formulated and quantified, whose predictions agree with DNS and experimental data for the Rayleigh-number (Ra) over seven decades. In particular, a thermal buffer layer follows a 1/7 scaling like the previously postulated mixing zone (Procaccia et al, Phys. Rev. A,1991), and yields a Ra-dependent log law constant. A new parameterization of Nu(Ra) dependence is proposed, based on the present multi-layer quantification of the bulk MTP.

Fast transitionless expansions of Gaussian anharmonic traps for cold atoms: bang-singular-bang control

Combining invariant-based inverse engineering, perturbation theory, and Optimal Control Theory, we design fast, transitionless expansions of cold neutral atoms or ions in Gaussian anharmonic traps. Bounding the possible trap frequencies and using a "bang-singular-bang" control we find fast processes for a continuum of durations up to a minimum time that corresponds to a purely bang-bang (stepwise frequency constant) control.

Infrared absorption by graphene-hBN heterostructures

We propose a theory of optical absorption in monolayer graphene-hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) heterostructures. In highly oriented heterostructures, the hBN underlay produces a long-range moiré superlattice potential for the graphene electrons which modifies the selection rules for absorption of incoming photons in the infrared to visible frequency range. The details of the absorption spectrum modification depend on the relative strength of the various symmetry-allowed couplings between the graphene electrons and the hBN, and the resulting nature of the reconstructed band structure.

Predicting the growth rate of helium bubbles in metal tritide

Helium bubbles nucleation and growth in metals or metal tritide is a long-standing problem attracting considerable attention in nuclear industry but the mechanism remains indistinct and predicting the growth rate of helium bubble is inexistence still up to new. Here, the rate of helium bubbles nucleation and growth in metal tritide is developed based on a dynamical model, which describes the diameter of helium bubbles increasing linearly as t**(1/3) in titanium tritide at room temperature, agreeing quite well with the experimental phenomenon. The way of reducing storage temperature from 300 to 225 K or increasing the helium atoms diffusion barrier from 0.81 to 1.1 eV can effectively restrain bubbles growth and prolong lifetime of titanium tritide more than 4 times, which provides a useful reference to relevant experiment exploration and applications. This model also can be used to predict lifetime of new tritium-storage materials and plasma facing materials in nuclear industry.

Direct observation of high temperature superconductivity in one-unit-cell FeSe films

Heterostructure based interface engineering has been proved an effective method for finding new superconducting systems and raising superconductivity transition temperature (TC). In previous work on one unit-cell (UC) thick FeSe films on SrTiO3 (STO) substrate, a superconducting-like energy gap as large as 20 meV, was revealed by in situ scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS). Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) further revealed a nearly isotropic gap of above 15 meV, which closes at a temperature of ~ 65 K. If this transition is indeed the superconducting transition, then the 1-UC FeSe represents the thinnest high TC superconductor discovered so far. However, up to date direct transport measurement of the 1-UC FeSe films has not been reported, mainly because growth of large scale 1-UC FeSe films is challenging and the 1-UC FeSe films are too thin to survive in atmosphere. In this work, we successfully prepared 1-UC FeSe films on insulating STO substrates with non-superconducting FeTe protection layers. By direct transport and magnetic measurements, we provide definitive evidence for high temperature superconductivity in the 1-UC FeSe films with an onset TC above 40 K and a extremely large critical current density JC ~ 1.7*106 A/cm2 at 2 K. Our work may pave the way to enhancing and tailoring superconductivity by interface engineering.

Observations of 6.7 GHz Methanol Masers with EAVN I: VLBI Images of the first Epoch of Observations

Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) monitoring of the 6.7 GHz methanol maser allows us to measure the internal proper motions of the maser spots and therefore study the gas motion around high-mass young stellar objects. To this end, we have begun monitoring observations with the East-Asian VLBI Network. In this paper we present the results of the first epoch observation for 36 sources, including 35 VLBI images of the methanol maser. Since two independent sources were found in three images, respectively, images of 38 sources were obtained. In 34 sources, more than or equal to 10 spots were detected. The observed spatial scale of the maser distribution was from 9 to 4900 astronomical units, and the following morphological categories were observed: elliptical, arched, linear, paired, and complex. The position of the maser spot was determined to an accuracy of approximately 0.1 mas, sufficiently high to measure the internal proper motion from two years of monitoring observations. The VLBI observation, however, detected only approximately 20% of all maser emission, suggesting that the remaining 80% of the total flux was spread into an undetectable extended distribution. Therefore, in addition to high-resolution observations, it is important to observe the whole structure of the maser emission including extended low-brightness structures, to reveal the associated site of the maser and gas motion.
