Class I methanol masers: Masers with EGOs

We have compared the results of a number of published class I methanol maser surveys with the catalogue of high-mass outflow candidates identified from the GLIMPSE survey (known as extended green objects or EGOs). We find class I methanol masers associated with approximately two-thirds of EGOs. Although the association between outflows and class I methanol masers has long been postulated on the basis of detailed studies of a small number of sources, this result demonstrates the relationship for the first time on a statistical basis. Despite the publication of a number of searches for class I methanol masers, a close physical association with another astrophysical object which could be targeted for the search is still lacking. The close association between class I methanol masers and EGOs therefore provides a large catalogue of candidate sources, most of which have not previously been searched for class I methanol masers. Interstellar masers and outflows have both been proposed to trace an evolutionary sequence for high-mass star formation, therefore a better understanding of the relationship between class I methanol masers and outflow offers the potential for comparison and amalgamation of these two evolutionary sequences.

Extragalactic Point Source Search in Five-year WMAP 41, 61 and 94 GHz Maps

We present the results of an extragalactic point source search using the five-year WMAP 41, 61 and 94 GHz (Q-, V- and W-band) temperature maps. This work is an extension of our point source search in the WMAP maps applying a CMB-free technique. An internal linear combination (ILC) map has been formed from the three-band maps, with the weights chosen to remove the CMB anisotropy signal as well as to favor a selection of flat-spectrum sources. We find 381 sources at the > 5 sigma level outside the WMAP point source detection mask in the ILC map, among which 89 are "new" (i.e., not present in the WMAP catalog). Source fluxes have been calculated and corrected for the Eddington bias. We have solidly identified 367 (96.3%) of our sources. The 1 sigma positional uncertainty is estimated to be 2'. The 14 unidentified sources could be either extended radio structure or obscured by Galactic emission. We have also applied the same detection process on simulated maps and found 364+/-21 detections on average. The recovered source distribution N(>S) agrees well with the simulation input, which proves the reliability of this method.

Real Regulators on Self-Products of K3 Surfaces

Based on a novel application of an archimedean type pairing to the geometry and deformation theory of $K3$ surfaces, we construct a regulator indecomposable $K_1$-class on a self-product of a $K3$ surface. In the Appendix, we explain how this pairing is a special instance of a general pairing on precycles in the equivalence relation defining Bloch's higher Chow groups.

Unusual giant magnetoresistance effect in heterojunction structure of ultra-thin single-crystal Pb film on silicon substrate

Superconductor films on semiconductor substrates draw much attention recently since the derived superconductor-based electronics have been shown promising for future data process and storage technologies. By growing atomically uniform single-crystal epitaxial Pb films of several nanometers thick on Si wafers to form a sharp superconductor-semiconductor heterojunction, we have obtained an unusual giant magnetoresistance effect when the Pb film is superconducting. In addition to the great fundamental interest of this effect, the simple structure and compatibility and scalability with current Si-based semiconductor technology offer a great opportunity for integrating superconducting circuits and detectors in a single chip.

VLBI Observations of SiO Masers around AH Scorpii

We report the first Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of 43 GHz v=1, J=1-0 SiO masers in the circumstellar envelope of the M-type semi-regular supergiant variable star AH Sco at 2 epochs separated by 12 days in March 2004. These high-resolution VLBA images reveal that the distribution of SiO masers is roughly on a persistent elliptical ring with the lengths of the major and minor axes of about 18.5 and 15.8 mas, respectively, along a position angle of 150^{\circ}. And the red-shifted masers are found to be slightly closer to the central star than the blue-shifted masers. The line-of-sight velocity structure of the SiO masers shows that with respect to the systemic velocity of -6.8 km/s the higher velocity features are closer to the star, which can be well explained by the simple outflow or infall without rotation kinematics of SiO masers around AH Sco. Study of proper motions of 59 matched features between two epochs clearly indicates that the SiO maser shell around AH Sco was undergoing an overall contraction to the star at a velocity of ~13 km/s at a distance of 2.26 kpc to AH Sco. Our 3-dimensional maser kinematics model further suggests that such an inward motion is very likely due to the gravitation of the central star. The distance to AH Sco of 2.26$\pm$0.19 kpc obtained from the 3-dimensional kinematics model fitting is consistent with its kinematic distance of 2.0 kpc.

Quantum Oscillations of Tunnel Magnetoresistance Induced by Spin-Wave Excitations in Ferromagnet-Ferromagnet-Ferromagnet Double Barrier Tunnel Junctions

The possibility of quantum oscillations of the tunnel conductance and magnetoresistance induced by spin-wave excitations in a ferromagnet-ferromagnet-ferromagnet double barrier tunnel junction, when the magnetizations of the two side ferromagnets are aligned antiparallel to that of the middle ferromagnet, is investigated in a self-consistent manner by means of Keldysh nonequilibrium Green function method. It has been found that owing to the s-d exchange interactions between conduction electrons and the spin density induced by spin accumulation in the middle ferromagnet, the differential conductance and the TMR indeed oscillate with the increase of bias voltage, being consistent with the phenomenon that is observed recently in experiments. The effects of magnon modes, the energy levels of electrons as well as the molecular field in the central ferromagnet on the oscillatory transport property of the system are also discussed.

Extragalactic Point Source Search in WMAP 61 and 94 GHz Data

We report the results of an extragalactic point source search using the 61 and 94 GHz (V- and W-band) temperature maps from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP). Applying a method that cancels the ``noise'' due to the CMB anisotropy signal, we find in the $|b| > 10\degr$ region 31 sources in the first-year maps and 64 sources in the three-year co-added maps, at a $5σ$ level. The 1$σ$ position uncertainties are 1.6' and 1.4' each. The increased detections and improved positional accuracy are expected from the higher signal-to-noise ratio of WMAP three-year data. All sources detected in the first-year maps are repeatedly detected in the three-year maps, which is a strong proof of the consistency and reliability of this method. Among all the detections, 21 are new, i.e. not in the WMAP three-year point source catalog. We associate all but two of them with known objects. The two unidentified sources are likely to be variable or extended as observations through VLA, CARMA and ATCA all show non-detection at the nominal locations. We derive the source count distribution at WMAP V-band by combining our verified detections with sources from the WMAP three-year catalog. Assuming the effect of source clustering is negligible, the contribution to the power spectrum from faint sources below 0.75 Jy is estimated to be $(2.4\pm0.8) \times 10^{-3} μK^2$ sr for V-band, which implies a source correction amplitude $A = 0.012\pm0.004 μK^2$ sr.

Assertion-Based Design Exploration of DVS in Network Processor Architectures

With the scaling of technology and higher requirements on performance and functionality, power dissipation is becoming one of the major design considerations in the development of network processors. In this paper, we use an assertion-based methodology for system-level power/performance analysis to study two dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) techniques, traffic-based DVS and execution-based DVS, in a network processor model. Using the automatically generated distribution analyzers, we analyze the power and performance distributions and study their trade-offs for the two DVS policies with different parameter settings such as threshold values and window sizes. We discuss the optimal configurations of the two DVS policies under different design requirements. By a set of experiments, we show that the assertion-based trace analysis methodology is an efficient tool that can help a designer easily compare and study optimal architectural configurations in a large design space.

Settling the Complexity of Computing Two-Player Nash Equilibria

We settle a long-standing open question in algorithmic game theory. We prove that Bimatrix, the problem of finding a Nash equilibrium in a two-player game, is complete for the complexity class PPAD Polynomial Parity Argument, Directed version) introduced by Papadimitriou in 1991. This is the first of a series of results concerning the complexity of Nash equilibria. In particular, we prove the following theorems: Bimatrix does not have a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme unless every problem in PPAD is solvable in polynomial time. The smoothed complexity of the classic Lemke-Howson algorithm and, in fact, of any algorithm for Bimatrix is not polynomial unless every problem in PPAD is solvable in randomized polynomial time. Our results demonstrate that, even in the simplest form of non-cooperative games, equilibrium computation and approximation are polynomial-time equivalent to fixed point computation. Our results also have two broad complexity implications in mathematical economics and operations research: Arrow-Debreu market equilibria are PPAD-hard to compute. The P-Matrix Linear Complementary Problem is computationally harder than convex programming unless every problem in PPAD is solvable in polynomial time.

Paths Beyond Local Search: A Nearly Tight Bound for Randomized Fixed-Point Computation

In 1983, Aldous proved that randomization can speedup local search. For example, it reduces the query complexity of local search over [1:n]^d from Theta (n^{d-1}) to O (d^{1/2}n^{d/2}). It remains open whether randomization helps fixed-point computation. Inspired by this open problem and recent advances on equilibrium computation, we have been fascinated by the following question: Is a fixed-point or an equilibrium fundamentally harder to find than a local optimum? In this paper, we give a nearly-tight bound of Omega(n)^{d-1} on the randomized query complexity for computing a fixed point of a discrete Brouwer function over [1:n]^d. Since the randomized query complexity of global optimization over [1:n]^d is Theta (n^{d}), the randomized query model over [1:n]^d strictly separates these three important search problems: Global optimization is harder than fixed-point computation, and fixed-point computation is harder than local search. Our result indeed demonstrates that randomization does not help much in fixed-point computation in the query model; the deterministic complexity of this problem is Theta (n^{d-1}).

Physical mechanism of superluminal traversal time: interference between multiple finite wave packets

The mechanism of superluminal traversal time through a potential well or potential barrier is investigated from the viewpoint of interference between multiple finite wave packets, due to the multiple reflections inside the well or barrier. In the case of potential-well traveling that is classically allowed, each of the successively transmitted constituents is delayed by a subluminal time. When the thickness of the well is much smaller in comparision with a characteristic length of the incident wave packet, the reshaped wave packet in transmission maintains the profile of the incident wave packet. In the case of potential-barrier tunneling that is classically forbidden, though each of the successively transmitted constituents is delayed by a time that is independent of the barrier thickness, the interference between multiple transmitted constituents explains the barrier-thickness dependence of the traversal time for thin barriers and its barrier-thickness independence for thick barriers. This manifests the nature of Hartman effect.

On Searching a Table Consistent with Division Poset

Suppose $P_n=\{1,2,...,n\}$ is a partially ordered set with the partial order defined by divisibility, that is, for any two distinct elements $i,j\in P_n$ satisfying $i$ divides $j$, $i<_{P_n} j$. A table $A_n=\{a_i|i=1,2,...,n\}$ of distinct real numbers is said to be \emph{consistent} with $P_n$, provided for any two distinct elements $i,j\in \{1,2,...,n\}$ satisfying $i$ divides $j$, $a_i< a_j$. Given an real number $x$, we want to determine whether $x\in A_n$, by comparing $x$ with as few entries of $A_n$ as possible. In this paper we investigate the complexity $τ(n)$, measured in the number of comparisons, of the above search problem. We present a $\frac{55n}{72}+O(\ln^2 n)$ search algorithm for $A_n$ and prove a lower bound $({3/4}+{17/2160})n+O(1)$ on $τ(n)$ by using an adversary argument.

Computing Nash Equilibria: Approximation and Smoothed Complexity

We show that the BIMATRIX game does not have a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme, unless PPAD is in P. In other words, no algorithm with time polynomial in n and 1/εcan compute an ε-approximate Nash equilibrium of an n by nbimatrix game, unless PPAD is in P. Instrumental to our proof, we introduce a new discrete fixed-point problem on a high-dimensional cube with a constant side-length, such as on an n-dimensional cube with side-length 7, and show that they are PPAD-complete. Furthermore, we prove, unless PPAD is in RP, that the smoothed complexity of the Lemke-Howson algorithm or any algorithm for computing a Nash equilibrium of a bimatrix game is polynomial in n and 1/σunder perturbations with magnitude σ. Our result answers a major open question in the smoothed analysis of algorithms and the approximation of Nash equilibria.

Inward Motions of the Compact SiO Masers Around VX Sagittarii

We report Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of 43 GHz v=1, J=1-0 SiO masers in the circumstellar envelope of the M-type semi-regular variable star VX Sgr at 3 epochs during 1999 April-May. These high-resolution VLBA images reveal a persistent ringlike distribution of SiO masers with a projected radius of ~3 stellar radii. The typical angular size of 0.5 mas for individual maser feature was estimated from two-point correlation function analysis for maser spots. We found that the apparent size scale of maser features was distinctly smaller than that observed in the previous observations by comparing their fractions of total power imaged. This change in the size scale of maser emission may be related to stellar activity that caused a large SiO flare during our observations. Our observations confirmed the asymmetric distribution of maser emission, but the overall morphology has changed significantly with the majority of masers clustering to the north-east of the star compared to that lying to the south-west direction in 1992. By identifying 42 matched maser features appearing in all the three epochs, we determined the contraction of an SiO maser shell toward VX Sgr at a proper motion of -0.507 mas/yr, corresponding to a velocity of about 4 km/s at a distance of 1.7 kpc to VX Sgr. Such a velocity is on the order of the sound speed, and can be easily explained by the gravitational infall of material from the circumstellar dust shell.

Lateral shift of the transmitted light beam through a left-handed slab

It is reported that when a light beam travels through a slab of left-handed medium in the air, the lateral shift of the transmitted beam can be negative as well as positive. The necessary condition for the lateral shift to be positive is given. The validity of the stationary-phase approach is demonstrated by numerical simulations for a Gaussian-shaped beam. A restriction to the slab's thickness is provided that is necessary for the beam to retain its profile in the traveling. It is shown that the lateral shift of the reflected beam is equal to that of the transmitted beam in the symmetric configuration.

Negative group delay for Dirac particles traveling through a potential well

The properties of group delay for Dirac particles traveling through a potential well are investigated. A necessary condition is put forward for the group delay to be negative. It is shown that this negative group delay is closely related to its anomalous dependence on the width of the potential well. In order to demonstrate the validity of stationary-phase approach, numerical simulations are made for Gaussian-shaped temporal wave packets. A restriction to the potential-well's width is obtained that is necessary for the wave packet to remain distortionless in the travelling. Numerical comparison shows that the relativistic group delay is larger than its corresponding non-relativistic one.
