Reflected Light Curves, Spherical and Bond Albedos of Jupiter- and Saturn-like Exoplanets

Reflected light curves observed for exoplanets indicate bright clouds at some of them. We estimate how the light curve and total stellar heating of a planet depend on forward and backward scattering in the clouds based on Pioneer and Cassini spacecraft images of Jupiter and Saturn. We fit analytical functions to the local reflected brightnesses of Jupiter and Saturn depending on the planet's phase. These observations cover broad bands at 0.59-0.72 and 0.39-0.5 μm, and narrow bands at 0.938 (atmospheric window), 0.889 (CH4 absorption band), and 0.24-0.28 μm. We simulate the images of the planets with a ray-tracing model, and disk-integrate them to produce the full-orbit light curves. For Jupiter, we also fit the modeled light curves to the observed full-disk brightness. We derive spherical albedos for Jupiter, Saturn, and for planets with Lambertian and Rayleigh-scattering atmospheres. Jupiter-like atmospheres can produce light curves that are a factor of two fainter at half-phase than the Lambertian planet, given the same geometric albedo at transit. The spherical albedo is typically lower than for a Lambertian planet by up to a factor of 1.5. The Lambertian assumption will underestimate the absorption of the stellar light and the equilibrium temperature of the planetary atmosphere. We also compare our light curves with the light curves of solid bodies: the moons Enceladus and Callisto. Their strong backscattering peak within a few degrees of opposition (secondary eclipse) can lead to an even stronger underestimate of the stellar heating.

A Multiple Scattering Polarized Radiative Transfer Model: Application to HD 189733b

We present a multiple scattering vector radiative transfer model which produces disk integrated, full phase polarized light curves for reflected light from an exoplanetary atmosphere. We validate our model against results from published analytical and computational models and discuss a small number of cases relevant to the existing and possible near-future observations of the exoplanet HD 189733b. HD 189733b is arguably the most well observed exoplanet to date and the only exoplanet to be observed in polarized light, yet it is debated if the planet's atmosphere is cloudy or clear. We model reflected light from clear atmospheres with Rayleigh scattering, and cloudy or hazy atmospheres with Mie and fractal aggregate particles. We show that clear and cloudy atmospheres have large differences in polarized light as compared to simple flux measurements, though existing observations are insufficient to make this distinction. Futhermore, we show that atmospheres that are spatially inhomogeneous, such as being partially covered by clouds or hazes, exhibit larger contrasts in polarized light when compared to clear atmospheres. This effect can potentially be used to identify patchy clouds in exoplanets. Given a set of full phase polarimetric measurements, this model can constrain the geometric albedo, properties of scattering particles in the atmosphere and the longitude of the ascending node of the orbit. The model is used to interpret new polarimetric observations of HD 189733b in a companion paper.

Focal plane wave-front sensing algorithm for high-contrast imaging

High-contrast imaging provided by a coronagraph is critical for the direction imaging of the Earth-like planet orbiting its bright parent star. A major limitation for such direct imaging is the speckle noise that is induced from the wave-front error of an optical system. We derive an algorithm for the wave-front measurement directly from 3 focal plane images. The 3 images are achieved through a deformable mirror to provide specific phases for the optics system. We introduce an extra amplitude modulation on one deformable mirror configuration to create an uncorrelated wave-front, which is a critical procedure for wave-front sensing. The simulation shows that the reconstructed wave-front is consistent with the original wave-front theoretically, which indicates that such an algorithm is a promising technique for the wave-front measurement for the high-contrast imaging.

Uniqueness of Constant Scalar Curvature Sasakian Metrics

In this paper, we prove that the transverse Mabuchi K-energy functional is convex along the weak geodesic in the space of Sasakian metrics. As an application, we obtain the uniqueness of constant scalar curvature Sasakian metrics modulo automorphisms for the transverse holomorphic structure.

Flexibility of nucleic acids: from DNA to RNA

The structural flexibility of nucleic acids plays a key role in many fundamental life processes, such as gene replication and expression, DNA-protein recognition, and gene regulation. To obtain a thorough understanding of nucleic acid flexibility, extensive studies have been performed using various experimental methods and theoretical models. In this review, we will introduce the progress that has been made in understanding the flexibility of nucleic acids including DNAs and RNAs, and will emphasize the experimental findings and the effects of salt, temperature, and sequence. Finally, we will discuss the major unanswered questions in understanding the flexibility of nucleic acids.

Learning from Synthetic Data Using a Stacked Multichannel Autoencoder

Learning from synthetic data has many important and practical applications. An example of application is photo-sketch recognition. Using synthetic data is challenging due to the differences in feature distributions between synthetic and real data, a phenomenon we term synthetic gap. In this paper, we investigate and formalize a general framework-Stacked Multichannel Autoencoder (SMCAE) that enables bridging the synthetic gap and learning from synthetic data more efficiently. In particular, we show that our SMCAE can not only transform and use synthetic data on the challenging face-sketch recognition task, but that it can also help simulate real images, which can be used for training classifiers for recognition. Preliminary experiments validate the effectiveness of the framework.

Filtered-OFDM - Enabler for Flexible Waveform in The 5th Generation Cellular Networks

The underlying waveform has always been a shaping factor for each generation of the cellular networks, such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for the 4th generation cellular networks (4G). To meet the diversified and pronounced expectations upon the upcoming 5G cellular networks, here we present an enabler for flexible waveform configuration, named as filtered-OFDM (f-OFDM). With the conventional OFDM, a unified numerology is applied across the bandwidth provided, balancing among the channel characteristics and the service requirements, and the spectrum efficiency is limited by the compromise we made. In contrast, with f-OFDM, the assigned bandwidth is split up into several subbands, and different types of services are accommodated in different subbands with the most suitable waveform and numerology, leading to an improved spectrum utilization. After outlining the general framework of f-OFDM, several important design aspects are also discussed, including filter design and guard tone arrangement. In addition, an extensive comparison among the existing 5G waveform candidates is also included to illustrate the advantages of f-OFDM. Our simulations indicate that, in a specific scenario with four distinct types of services, f-OFDM provides up to 46% of throughput gains over the conventional OFDM scheme.

The limit of the Yang-Mills-Higgs flow on Higgs bundles

In this paper, we consider the gradient flow of the Yang-Mills-Higgs functional for Higgs pairs on a Hermitian vector bundle $(E, H_{0})$ over a compact Kähler manifold $(M, ω)$. We study the asymptotic behavior of the Yang-Mills-Higgs flow for Higgs pairs at infinity, and show that the limiting Higgs sheaf is isomorphic to the double dual of the graded Higgs sheaves associated to the Harder-Narasimhan-Seshadri filtration of the initial Higgs bundle.

Twisted and conical Kähler-Ricci soliton on Fano manifolds

In this paper, we consider the twisted Kähler-Ricci soliton, and show that the existence of twisted Kähler-Ricci soliton with semi-positive twisting form is closely related to the properness of some energy functionals. We also consider the conical Kähler-Ricci soliton, and obtain some existence results. In particular, under some assumptions on the divisor and $α$-invariant, we get the properness of the modified log K-energy and the existence of conical Kähler-Ricci soliton with suitable cone angle.

Learning Classifiers from Synthetic Data Using a Multichannel Autoencoder

We propose a method for using synthetic data to help learning classifiers. Synthetic data, even is generated based on real data, normally results in a shift from the distribution of real data in feature space. To bridge the gap between the real and synthetic data, and jointly learn from synthetic and real data, this paper proposes a Multichannel Autoencoder(MCAE). We show that by suing MCAE, it is possible to learn a better feature representation for classification. To evaluate the proposed approach, we conduct experiments on two types of datasets. Experimental results on two datasets validate the efficiency of our MCAE model and our methodology of generating synthetic data.

Flexibility of short DNA helices with finite-length effect: from base pairs to tens of base pairs

Flexibility of short DNA helices is important for the biological functions such as nucleosome formation and DNA-protein recognition. Recent experiments suggest that short DNAs of tens of base pairs (bps) may have apparently higher flexibility than those of kilo bps, while there is still the debate on such high flexibility. In the present work, we have studied the flexibility of short DNAs with finite-length of 5 to 50 bps by the all-atomistic molecular dynamics simulations and Monte Carlo simulations with the worm-like chain model. Our microscopic analyses reveal that short DNAs have apparently high flexibility which is attributed to the significantly strong bending and stretching flexibilities of ~6 bps at each helix end. Correspondingly, the apparent persistence length lp of short DNAs increases gradually from ~29nm to ~45nm as DNA length increases from 10 to 50 bps, in accordance with the available experimental data. Our further analyses show that the short DNAs with excluding ~6 bps at each helix end have the similar flexibility with those of kilo bps and can be described by the worm-like chain model with lp~50nm.

Anisotropic Magnetotransport and Exotic Longitudinal Linear Magnetoresistance in WTe2 Crystals

WTe2 semimetal, as a typical layered transition-metal dichalcogenide, has recently attracted much attention due to the extremely large, non-saturating parabolic magnetoresistance in perpendicular field. Here, we report a systematic study of the angular dependence of the magnetoresistance in WTe2 single crystal. The violation of the Kohler rule and a significant anisotropic magnetotransport behavior in different magnetic field directions are observed. Surprisingly, when the applied field is parallel to the tungsten chains of WTe2, an exotic large longitudinal linear magnetoresistance as high as 1200% at 15 T and 2 K is identified. Violation of the Kohler rule in transverse magnetoresistance can be understood based on a dual effect of the excitons formation and thermal activation, while large longitudinal linear magnetoresistance reflects perfectly the scattering and nesting of quasi-1D nature of this balanced hole-electron system. Our work will stimulate studies of such double-carrier correlated material and corresponding quantum physics.

A High-contrast Imaging Algorithm: Optimized Image Rotation and Subtraction

Image Rotation and Subtraction (IRS) is a high-contrast imaging technique which can be used to suppress the speckles noise and facilitate the direct detection of exoplanets. IRS is different from Angular Differential Imaging (ADI), in which it will subtract a copy of the image with 180 degrees rotated around its PSF center, rather than the subtraction of the median of all of the PSF images. Since the planet itself will be rotated to the other side of the PSF, IRS does not suffer from planet self-subtraction. In this paper, we have introduced an optimization algorithm to IRS (OIRS), which can provide an extra contrast gain at small angular separations. The performance of OIRS has been demonstrated with ADI data. We then made a comparison of the signal to noise ratio (S/N) achieved by algorithms of locally optimized combination of images (LOCI) and OIRS. Finally we found that OIRS algorithm can deliver a better S/N for small angular separations.

The conical Kähler-Ricci flow on Fano manifolds

In this paper, we study the long-term behavior of the conical Kähler-Ricci flow on Fano manifold $M$. First, based on our work of locally uniform regularity for the twisted Kähler-Ricci flows, we obtain a long-time solution to the conical Kähler-Ricci flow by limiting a sequence of these twisted flows. Second, we study the uniform Perelman's estimates of the twisted Kähler-Ricci flows. After that, we prove that the conical Kähler-Ricci flow must converge to a conical Kähler-Einstein metric if there exists one.

Artificial-Noise-Aided Secure Multi-Antenna Transmission with Limited Feedback

We present an optimized secure multi-antenna transmission approach based on artificial-noise-aided beamforming, with limited feedback from a desired single-antenna receiver. To deal with beamformer quantization errors as well as unknown eavesdropper channel characteristics, our approach is aimed at maximizing throughput under dual performance constraints - a connection outage constraint on the desired communication channel and a secrecy outage constraint to guard against eavesdropping. We propose an adaptive transmission strategy that judiciously selects the wiretap coding parameters, as well as the power allocation between the artificial noise and the information signal. This optimized solution reveals several important differences with respect to solutions designed previously under the assumption of perfect feedback. We also investigate the problem of how to most efficiently utilize the feedback bits. The simulation results indicate that a good design strategy is to use approximately 20% of these bits to quantize the channel gain information, with the remainder to quantize the channel direction, and this allocation is largely insensitive to the secrecy outage constraint imposed. In addition, we find that 8 feedback bits per transmit antenna is sufficient to achieve approximately 90% of the throughput attainable with perfect feedback.

Compact tunable Compton x-ray source from laser-plasma accelerator and plasma mirror

We present an in-depth experimental-computational study of the parameters necessary to optimize a tunable, quasi-monoenergetic, efficient, low-background Compton backscattering (CBS) x-ray source that is based on the self-aligned combination of a laser-plasma accelerator (LPA) and a plasma mirror (PM). The main findings are: (1) an LPA driven in the blowout regime by 30 TW, 30 fs laser pulses producesnot only a high-quality, tunable, quasi-monoenergetic electron beam, but also a high-quality, relativistically intense (a0~1) spent drive pulse that remains stable in profile and intensity over the LPA tuning range. (2) A thin plastic film near the gas jet exit retro-reflects the spent drive pulse efficiently into oncoming electrons to produce CBS x-rays without detectable bremsstrahlung background. Meanwhile anomalous far-field divergence of the retro-reflected light demonstrates relativistic "denting" of the PM. Exploiting these optimized LPA and PM conditions, we demonstrate quasi-monoenergetic (50% FWHM energy spread), tunable (75 to 200 KeV) CBS x-rays, characteristics previously achieved only on more powerful laser systems by CBS of a split-off, counter-propagating pulse. Moreover, laser-to-x-ray photon conversion efficiency ~6e12 exceeds that of any previous LPA-based quasi-monoenergetic Compton source. Particle-in-cell simulations agree well with the measurements.
