Prioritized Propagation in Graph Neural Networks

Graph neural networks (GNNs) have recently received significant attention. Learning node-wise message propagation in GNNs aims to set personalized propagation steps for different nodes in the graph. Despite the success, existing methods ignore node priority that can be reflected by node influence and heterophily. In this paper, we propose a versatile framework PPro, which can be integrated with most existing GNN models and aim to learn prioritized node-wise message propagation in GNNs. Specifically, the framework consists of three components: a backbone GNN model, a propagation controller to determine the optimal propagation steps for nodes, and a weight controller to compute the priority scores for nodes. We design a mutually enhanced mechanism to compute node priority, optimal propagation step and label prediction. We also propose an alternative optimization strategy to learn the parameters in the backbone GNN model and two parametric controllers. We conduct extensive experiments to compare our framework with other 11 state-of-the-art competitors on 8 benchmark datasets. Experimental results show that our framework can lead to superior performance in terms of propagation strategies and node representations.

Retrieval-Augmented Code Generation for Universal Information Extraction

Information Extraction (IE) aims to extract structural knowledge (e.g., entities, relations, events) from natural language texts, which brings challenges to existing methods due to task-specific schemas and complex text expressions. Code, as a typical kind of formalized language, is capable of describing structural knowledge under various schemas in a universal way. On the other hand, Large Language Models (LLMs) trained on both codes and texts have demonstrated powerful capabilities of transforming texts into codes, which provides a feasible solution to IE tasks. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a universal retrieval-augmented code generation framework based on LLMs, called Code4UIE, for IE tasks. Specifically, Code4UIE adopts Python classes to define task-specific schemas of various structural knowledge in a universal way. By so doing, extracting knowledge under these schemas can be transformed into generating codes that instantiate the predefined Python classes with the information in texts. To generate these codes more precisely, Code4UIE adopts the in-context learning mechanism to instruct LLMs with examples. In order to obtain appropriate examples for different tasks, Code4UIE explores several example retrieval strategies, which can retrieve examples semantically similar to the given texts. Extensive experiments on five representative IE tasks across nine datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the Code4UIE framework.

Parameter-Agnostic Optimization under Relaxed Smoothness

Tuning hyperparameters, such as the stepsize, presents a major challenge of training machine learning models. To address this challenge, numerous adaptive optimization algorithms have been developed that achieve near-optimal complexities, even when stepsizes are independent of problem-specific parameters, provided that the loss function is $L$-smooth. However, as the assumption is relaxed to the more realistic $(L_0, L_1)$-smoothness, all existing convergence results still necessitate tuning of the stepsize. In this study, we demonstrate that Normalized Stochastic Gradient Descent with Momentum (NSGD-M) can achieve a (nearly) rate-optimal complexity without prior knowledge of any problem parameter, though this comes at the cost of introducing an exponential term dependent on $L_1$ in the complexity. We further establish that this exponential term is inevitable to such schemes by introducing a theoretical framework of lower bounds tailored explicitly for parameter-agnostic algorithms. Interestingly, in deterministic settings, the exponential factor can be neutralized by employing Gradient Descent with a Backtracking Line Search. To the best of our knowledge, these findings represent the first parameter-agnostic convergence results under the generalized smoothness condition. Our empirical experiments further confirm our theoretical insights.

Resist Label Noise with PGM for Graph Neural Networks

While robust graph neural networks (GNNs) have been widely studied for graph perturbation and attack, those for label noise have received significantly less attention. Most existing methods heavily rely on the label smoothness assumption to correct noisy labels, which adversely affects their performance on heterophilous graphs. Further, they generally perform poorly in high noise-rate scenarios. To address these problems, in this paper, we propose a novel probabilistic graphical model (PGM) based framework LNP. Given a noisy label set and a clean label set, our goal is to maximize the likelihood of labels in the clean set. We first present LNP-v1, which generates clean labels based on graphs only in the Bayesian network. To further leverage the information of clean labels in the noisy label set, we put forward LNP-v2, which incorporates the noisy label set into the Bayesian network to generate clean labels. The generative process can then be used to predict labels for unlabeled nodes. We conduct extensive experiments to show the robustness of LNP on varying noise types and rates, and also on graphs with different heterophilies. In particular, we show that LNP can lead to inspiring performance in high noise-rate situations.

Invisible Watermarking for Audio Generation Diffusion Models

Diffusion models have gained prominence in the image domain for their capabilities in data generation and transformation, achieving state-of-the-art performance in various tasks in both image and audio domains. In the rapidly evolving field of audio-based machine learning, safeguarding model integrity and establishing data copyright are of paramount importance. This paper presents the first watermarking technique applied to audio diffusion models trained on mel-spectrograms. This offers a novel approach to the aforementioned challenges. Our model excels not only in benign audio generation, but also incorporates an invisible watermarking trigger mechanism for model verification. This watermark trigger serves as a protective layer, enabling the identification of model ownership and ensuring its integrity. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate that invisible watermark triggers can effectively protect against unauthorized modifications while maintaining high utility in benign audio generation tasks.

Crown ether decorated silicon photonics for safeguarding against lead poisoning

Lead (Pb2+) toxification in society is one of the most concerning public health crisis that remains unaddressed. The exposure to Pb2+ poisoning leads to a multitude of enduring health issues, even at the part-per-billion scale (ppb). Yet, public action dwarfs its impact. Pb2+ poisoning is estimated to account for 1 million deaths per year globally, which is in addition to its chronic impact on children. With their ring-shaped cavities, crown ethers are uniquely capable of selectively binding to specific ions. In this work, for the first time, the synergistic integration of highly-scalable silicon photonics, with crown ether amine conjugation via Fischer esterification in an environmentally-friendly fashion is demonstrated. This realises a photonic platform that enables the in-situ, highly-selective and quantitative detection of various ions. The development dispels the existing notion that Fischer esterification is restricted to organic compounds, laying the ground for subsequent amine conjugation for various crown ethers. In this work, the platform is engineered for Pb2+ detection, demonstrating a large dynamic detection range of 1 - 262000 ppb with high selectivity against a wide range of relevant ions. These results indicate the potential for the pervasive implementation of the technology to safeguard against ubiquitous lead poisoning in our society.

Multimodal ChatGPT for Medical Applications: an Experimental Study of GPT-4V

In this paper, we critically evaluate the capabilities of the state-of-the-art multimodal large language model, i.e., GPT-4 with Vision (GPT-4V), on Visual Question Answering (VQA) task. Our experiments thoroughly assess GPT-4V's proficiency in answering questions paired with images using both pathology and radiology datasets from 11 modalities (e.g. Microscopy, Dermoscopy, X-ray, CT, etc.) and fifteen objects of interests (brain, liver, lung, etc.). Our datasets encompass a comprehensive range of medical inquiries, including sixteen distinct question types. Throughout our evaluations, we devised textual prompts for GPT-4V, directing it to synergize visual and textual information. The experiments with accuracy score conclude that the current version of GPT-4V is not recommended for real-world diagnostics due to its unreliable and suboptimal accuracy in responding to diagnostic medical questions. In addition, we delineate seven unique facets of GPT-4V's behavior in medical VQA, highlighting its constraints within this complex arena. The complete details of our evaluation cases are accessible at https://github.com/ZhilingYan/GPT4V-Medical-Report.

Network Intrusion Detection with Edge-Directed Graph Multi-Head Attention Networks

A network intrusion usually involves a number of network locations. Data flow (including the data generated by intrusion behaviors) among these locations (usually represented by IP addresses) naturally forms a graph. Thus, graph neural networks (GNNs) have been used in the construction of intrusion detection models in recent years since they have an excellent ability to capture graph topological features of intrusion data flow. However, existing GNN models treat node mean aggregation equally in node information aggregation. In reality, the correlations of nodes and their neighbors as well as the linked edges are different. Assigning higher weights to nodes and edges with high similarity can highlight the correlation among them, which will enhance the accuracy and expressiveness of the model. To this end, this paper proposes novel Edge-Directed Graph Multi-Head Attention Networks (EDGMAT) for network intrusion detection. The proposed EDGMAT model introduces a multi-head attention mechanism into the intrusion detection model. Additional weight learning is realized through the combination of a multi-head attention mechanism and edge features. Weighted aggregation makes better use of the relationship between different network traffic data. Experimental results on four recent NIDS benchmark datasets show that the performance of EDGMAT in terms of weighted F1-Score is significantly better than that of four state-of-the-art models in multi-class detection tasks.

DialCoT Meets PPO: Decomposing and Exploring Reasoning Paths in Smaller Language Models

Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting has proven to be effective in enhancing the reasoning capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) with at least 100 billion parameters. However, it is ineffective or even detrimental when applied to reasoning tasks in Smaller Language Models (SLMs) with less than 10 billion parameters. To address this limitation, we introduce Dialogue-guided Chain-of-Thought (DialCoT) which employs a dialogue format to generate intermediate reasoning steps, guiding the model toward the final answer. Additionally, we optimize the model's reasoning path selection using the Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithm, further enhancing its reasoning capabilities. Our method offers several advantages compared to previous approaches. Firstly, we transform the process of solving complex reasoning questions by breaking them down into a series of simpler sub-questions, significantly reducing the task difficulty and making it more suitable for SLMs. Secondly, we optimize the model's reasoning path selection through the PPO algorithm. We conduct comprehensive experiments on four arithmetic reasoning datasets, demonstrating that our method achieves significant performance improvements compared to state-of-the-art competitors.

Design of the LLRF control system for MA cavity at CSNS RCS

The China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) beam power was successfully reached 125 kW with a low beam loss in February 2022. In order to increase beam power, during the summer in 2022, we employ magnetic-alloy (MA) cavity in the rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS). It is a wideband cavity (Q=2), allows the second harmonic rf (h= 4) operation, with the existing ferrite cavity to realize the dual-harmonic acceleration. The second harmonic (h=4) is used for the bunch shape control and alleviating the space charge effects. We design of the low-level RF(LLRF) control system for MA cavity, in this paper, we describe the system design and implementation, and the preliminary test results.

The upgrade plan of the China Spallation Neutron Source aims to enhance the beam power from 100 kW to 500 kW. To achieve this, the plan involves incorporating three new magnetic alloy cavities while maintaining the existing system to enable double harmonic acceleration. As a consequence of the increased current intensity, the beam loading effect will be significantly amplified, presenting a considerable challenge for the low-level RF control system of the magnetic alloy cavity. To address this challenge, an adaptive feedforward algorithm has been developed to enable optimal control. In addition, comprehensive simulations of the algorithm have been successfully conducted to validate its.

APP-RUSS: Automated Path Planning for Robotic Ultrasound System

Autonomous robotic ultrasound System (RUSS) has been extensively studied. However, fully automated ultrasound image acquisition is still challenging, partly due to the lack of study in combining two phases of path planning: guiding the ultrasound probe to the scan target and covering the scan surface or volume. This paper presents a system of Automated Path Planning for RUSS (APP-RUSS). Our focus is on the first phase of automation, which emphasizes directing the ultrasound probe's path toward the target over extended distances. Specifically, our APP-RUSS system consists of a RealSense D405 RGB-D camera that is employed for visual guidance of the UR5e robotic arm and a cubic Bezier curve path planning model that is customized for delivering the probe to the recognized target. APP-RUSS can contribute to understanding the integration of the two phases of path planning in robotic ultrasound imaging, paving the way for its clinical adoption.

Uncertainty-aware Parameter-Efficient Self-training for Semi-supervised Language Understanding

The recent success of large pre-trained language models (PLMs) heavily hinges on massive labeled data, which typically produces inferior performance in low-resource scenarios. To remedy this dilemma, we study self-training as one of the predominant semi-supervised learning (SSL) approaches, which utilizes large-scale unlabeled data to generate synthetic examples. However, too many noisy labels will hurt the model performance, and the self-training procedure requires multiple training iterations making it more expensive if all the model parameters of the PLM are updated. This paper presents UPET, a novel Uncertainty-aware Parameter-Efficient self-Training framework to effectively and efficiently address the labeled data scarcity issue. Specifically, we incorporate Monte Carlo (MC) dropout in Bayesian neural network (BNN) to perform uncertainty estimation for the teacher model and then judiciously select reliable pseudo-labeled examples based on confidence and certainty. During the student training, we introduce multiple parameter-efficient learning (PEL) paradigms that allow the optimization of only a small percentage of parameters. We also propose a novel Easy-Hard Contrastive Tuning to enhance the robustness and generalization. Extensive experiments over multiple downstream tasks demonstrate that UPET achieves a substantial improvement in terms of performance and efficiency. DropMix: Better Graph Contrastive Learning with Harder Negative Samples

While generating better negative samples for contrastive learning has been widely studied in the areas of CV and NLP, very few work has focused on graph-structured data. Recently, Mixup has been introduced to synthesize hard negative samples in graph contrastive learning (GCL). However, due to the unsupervised learning nature of GCL, without the help of soft labels, directly mixing representations of samples could inadvertently lead to the information loss of the original hard negative and further adversely affect the quality of the newly generated harder negative. To address the problem, in this paper, we propose a novel method DropMix to synthesize harder negative samples, which consists of two main steps. Specifically, we first select some hard negative samples by measuring their hardness from both local and global views in the graph simultaneously. After that, we mix hard negatives only on partial representation dimensions to generate harder ones and decrease the information loss caused by Mixup. We conduct extensive experiments to verify the effectiveness of DropMix on six benchmark datasets. Our results show that our method can lead to better GCL performance. Our data and codes are publicly available at https://github.com/Mayueq/DropMix-Code.

Context-aware Session-based Recommendation with Graph Neural Networks

Session-based recommendation (SBR) is a task that aims to predict items based on anonymous sequences of user behaviors in a session. While there are methods that leverage rich context information in sessions for SBR, most of them have the following limitations: 1) they fail to distinguish the item-item edge types when constructing the global graph for exploiting cross-session contexts; 2) they learn a fixed embedding vector for each item, which lacks the flexibility to reflect the variation of user interests across sessions; 3) they generally use the one-hot encoded vector of the target item as the hard label to predict, thus failing to capture the true user preference. To solve these issues, we propose CARES, a novel context-aware session-based recommendation model with graph neural networks, which utilizes different types of contexts in sessions to capture user interests. Specifically, we first construct a multi-relation cross-session graph to connect items according to intra- and cross-session item-level contexts. Further, to encode the variation of user interests, we design personalized item representations. Finally, we employ a label collaboration strategy for generating soft user preference distribution as labels. Experiments on three benchmark datasets demonstrate that CARES consistently outperforms state-of-the-art models in terms of P@20 and MRR@20. Our data and codes are publicly available at https://github.com/brilliantZhang/CARES.

ChatRadio-Valuer: A Chat Large Language Model for Generalizable Radiology Report Generation Based on Multi-institution and Multi-system Data

Radiology report generation, as a key step in medical image analysis, is critical to the quantitative analysis of clinically informed decision-making levels. However, complex and diverse radiology reports with cross-source heterogeneity pose a huge generalizability challenge to the current methods under massive data volume, mainly because the style and normativity of radiology reports are obviously distinctive among institutions, body regions inspected and radiologists. Recently, the advent of large language models (LLM) offers great potential for recognizing signs of health conditions. To resolve the above problem, we collaborate with the Second Xiangya Hospital in China and propose ChatRadio-Valuer based on the LLM, a tailored model for automatic radiology report generation that learns generalizable representations and provides a basis pattern for model adaptation in sophisticated analysts' cases. Specifically, ChatRadio-Valuer is trained based on the radiology reports from a single institution by means of supervised fine-tuning, and then adapted to disease diagnosis tasks for human multi-system evaluation (i.e., chest, abdomen, muscle-skeleton, head, and maxillofacial $\&$ neck) from six different institutions in clinical-level events. The clinical dataset utilized in this study encompasses a remarkable total of \textbf{332,673} observations. From the comprehensive results on engineering indicators, clinical efficacy and deployment cost metrics, it can be shown that ChatRadio-Valuer consistently outperforms state-of-the-art models, especially ChatGPT (GPT-3.5-Turbo) and GPT-4 et al., in terms of the diseases diagnosis from radiology reports. ChatRadio-Valuer provides an effective avenue to boost model generalization performance and alleviate the annotation workload of experts to enable the promotion of clinical AI applications in radiology reports.
