Late afterglow emission statistics: a clear link between GW170817 and bright short GRBs

GW170817, the first neutron star merger event detected by advanced LIGO/Virgo detectors, was associated with an underluminous short duration GRB 170817A. In this work we compare the forward shock afterglow emission of GW170817/GRB 170817A to other luminous short GRBs (sGRBs) with both a known redshift and an afterglow emission lasting at least one day after the burst. In the rapid decay phase, the afterglow emission of the bright sGRBs and GW170817/GRB 170817A form a natural and continuous sequence, though separated by an observation time gap. If viewed on-axis, the forward shock afterglow emission of GW170817/GRB 170817A would be among the brightest ones detected so far. This provides a strong evidence for the GW170817-like merger origin of bright sGRBs, and suggests that the detection of the forward shock afterglow emission of most neutron star merger events are more challenging than the case of GW170817 since usually the mergers will be more distant and the viewing angles are plausibly higher.

Learning Tree-based Deep Model for Recommender Systems

Model-based methods for recommender systems have been studied extensively in recent years. In systems with large corpus, however, the calculation cost for the learnt model to predict all user-item preferences is tremendous, which makes full corpus retrieval extremely difficult. To overcome the calculation barriers, models such as matrix factorization resort to inner product form (i.e., model user-item preference as the inner product of user, item latent factors) and indexes to facilitate efficient approximate k-nearest neighbor searches. However, it still remains challenging to incorporate more expressive interaction forms between user and item features, e.g., interactions through deep neural networks, because of the calculation cost. In this paper, we focus on the problem of introducing arbitrary advanced models to recommender systems with large corpus. We propose a novel tree-based method which can provide logarithmic complexity w.r.t. corpus size even with more expressive models such as deep neural networks. Our main idea is to predict user interests from coarse to fine by traversing tree nodes in a top-down fashion and making decisions for each user-node pair. We also show that the tree structure can be jointly learnt towards better compatibility with users' interest distribution and hence facilitate both training and prediction. Experimental evaluations with two large-scale real-world datasets show that the proposed method significantly outperforms traditional methods. Online A/B test results in Taobao display advertising platform also demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in production environments.

Variational approaches to quantum impurities: from the Fröhlich polaron to the angulon

Problems involving quantum impurities, in which one or a few particles are interacting with a macroscopic environment, represent a pervasive paradigm, spanning across atomic, molecular, and condensed-matter physics. In this paper we introduce new variational approaches to quantum impurities and apply them to the Fröhlich polaron -- a quasiparticle formed out of an electron (or other point-like impurity) in a polar medium, and to the angulon -- a quasiparticle formed out of a rotating molecule in a bosonic bath. We benchmark these approaches against established theories, evaluating their accuracy as a function of the impurity-bath coupling.

Wireless Communications with Programmable Metasurface: Transceiver Design and Experimental Results

Metasurfaces have drawn significant attentions due to their superior capability in tailoring electromagnetic waves with a wide frequency range, from microwave to visible light. Recently, programmable metasurfaces have demonstrated the ability of manipulating the amplitude or phase of electromagnetic waves in a programmable manner in real time, which renders them especially appealing in the applications of wireless communications. To practically demonstrate the feasibility of programmable metasurfaces in future communication systems, in this paper, we design and realize a novel metasurface-based wireless communication system. By exploiting the dynamically controllable property of programmable metasurface, we firstly introduce the fundamental principle of the metasurface-based wireless communication system design. We then present the design, implementation and experimental evaluation of the proposed metasurface-based wireless communication system with a prototype, which realizes single carrier quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) transmission over the air. In the developed prototype, the phase of the reflected electromagnetic wave of programmable metasurface is directly manipulated in real time according to the baseband control signal, which achieves 2.048 Mbps data transfer rate with video streaming transmission over the air. Experimental result is provided to compare the performance of the proposed metasurface-based architecture against the conventional one. With the slight increase of the transmit power by 5 dB, the same bit error rate (BER) performance can be achieved as the conventional system in the absence of channel coding. Such a result is encouraging considering that the metasurface-based system has the advantages of low hardware cost and simple structure, thus leading to a promising new architecture for wireless communications.

Temporal Stable Community in Time-Varying Networks

Identifying community structure of a complex network provides insight to the interdependence between the network topology and emergent collective behaviors of networks, while detecting such invariant communities in a time-varying network is more challenging. In this paper, we define the temporal stable community and newly propose the concept of dynamic modularity to evaluate the stable community structures in time-varying networks, which is robust against small changes as verified by several empirical time-varying network datasets. Besides, using the volatility features of temporal stable communities in functional brain networks, we successfully differentiate the ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) patients and healthy controls efficiently.

Improving the Robustness of Speech Translation

Although neural machine translation (NMT) has achieved impressive progress recently, it is usually trained on the clean parallel data set and hence cannot work well when the input sentence is the production of the automatic speech recognition (ASR) system due to the enormous errors in the source. To solve this problem, we propose a simple but effective method to improve the robustness of NMT in the case of speech translation. We simulate the noise existing in the realistic output of the ASR system and inject them into the clean parallel data so that NMT can work under similar word distributions during training and testing. Besides, we also incorporate the Chinese Pinyin feature which is easy to get in speech translation to further improve the translation performance. Experiment results show that our method has a more stable performance and outperforms the baseline by an average of 3.12 BLEU on multiple noisy test sets, even while achieves a generalization improvement on the WMT'17 Chinese-English test set.

Charge Measurement of Cosmic Ray Nuclei with the Plastic Scintillator Detector of DAMPE

One of the main purposes of the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is to measure the cosmic ray nuclei up to several tens of TeV or beyond, whose origin and propagation remains a hot topic in astrophysics. The Plastic Scintillator Detector (PSD) on top of DAMPE is designed to measure the charges of cosmic ray nuclei from H to Fe and serves as a veto detector for discriminating gamma-rays from charged particles. We propose in this paper a charge reconstruction procedure to optimize the PSD performance in charge measurement. Essentials of our approach, including track finding, alignment of PSD, light attenuation correction, quenching and equalization correction are described detailedly in this paper after a brief description of the structure and operational principle of the PSD. Our results show that the PSD works very well and almost all the elements in cosmic rays from H to Fe are clearly identified in the charge spectrum.

Deep Diabetologist: Learning to Prescribe Hyperglycemia Medications with Hierarchical Recurrent Neural Networks

In healthcare, applying deep learning models to electronic health records (EHRs) has drawn considerable attention. EHR data consist of a sequence of medical visits, i.e. a multivariate time series of diagnosis, medications, physical examinations, lab tests, etc. This sequential nature makes EHR well matching the power of Recurrent Neural Network (RNN). In this paper, we propose "Deep Diabetologist" - using RNNs for EHR sequential data modelling, to provide the personalized hyperglycemia medication prediction for diabetic patients. Particularly, we develop a hierarchical RNN to capture the heterogeneous sequential information in the EHR data. Our experimental results demonstrate the improved performance, compared with a baseline classifier using logistic regression. Moreover, hierarchical RNN models outperform basic ones, providing deeper data insights for clinical decision support.

Adversarial Open-World Person Re-Identification

In a typical real-world application of re-id, a watch-list (gallery set) of a handful of target people (e.g. suspects) to track around a large volume of non-target people are demanded across camera views, and this is called the open-world person re-id. Different from conventional (closed-world) person re-id, a large portion of probe samples are not from target people in the open-world setting. And, it always happens that a non-target person would look similar to a target one and therefore would seriously challenge a re-id system. In this work, we introduce a deep open-world group-based person re-id model based on adversarial learning to alleviate the attack problem caused by similar non-target people. The main idea is learning to attack feature extractor on the target people by using GAN to generate very target-like images (imposters), and in the meantime the model will make the feature extractor learn to tolerate the attack by discriminative learning so as to realize group-based verification. The framework we proposed is called the adversarial open-world person re-identification, and this is realized by our Adversarial PersonNet (APN) that jointly learns a generator, a person discriminator, a target discriminator and a feature extractor, where the feature extractor and target discriminator share the same weights so as to makes the feature extractor learn to tolerate the attack by imposters for better group-based verification. While open-world person re-id is challenging, we show for the first time that the adversarial-based approach helps stabilize person re-id system under imposter attack more effectively.

Triple Attention Mixed Link Network for Single Image Super Resolution

Single image super resolution is of great importance as a low-level computer vision task. Recent approaches with deep convolutional neural networks have achieved im-pressive performance. However, existing architectures have limitations due to the less sophisticated structure along with less strong representational power. In this work, to significantly enhance the feature representation, we proposed Triple Attention mixed link Network (TAN) which consists of 1) three different aspects (i.e., kernel, spatial and channel) of attention mechanisms and 2) fu-sion of both powerful residual and dense connections (i.e., mixed link). Specifically, the network with multi kernel learns multi hierarchical representations under different receptive fields. The output features are recalibrated by the effective kernel and channel attentions and feed into next layer partly residual and partly dense, which filters the information and enable the network to learn more powerful representations. The features finally pass through the spatial attention in the reconstruction network which generates a fusion of local and global information, let the network restore more details and improves the quality of reconstructed images. Thanks to the diverse feature recalibrations and the advanced information flow topology, our proposed model is strong enough to per-form against the state-of-the-art methods on the bench-mark evaluations.

Network Modeling and Pathway Inference from Incomplete Data ("PathInf")

In this work, we developed a network inference method from incomplete data ("PathInf") , as massive and non-uniformly distributed missing values is a common challenge in practical problems. PathInf is a two-stages inference model. In the first stage, it applies a data summarization model based on maximum likelihood to deal with the massive distributed missing values by transforming the observation-wise items in the data into state matrix. In the second stage, transition pattern (i.e. pathway) among variables is inferred as a graph inference problem solved by greedy algorithm with constraints. The proposed method was validated and compared with the state-of-art Bayesian network method on the simulation data, and shown consistently superior performance. By applying the PathInf on the lymph vascular metastasis data, we obtained the holistic pathways of the lymph node metastasis with novel discoveries on the jumping metastasis among nodes that are physically apart. The discovery indicates the possible presence of sentinel node groups in the lung lymph nodes which have been previously speculated yet never found. The pathway map can also improve the current dissection examination protocol for better individualized treatment planning, for higher diagnostic accuracy and reducing the patients trauma.

Direct observation of ferroelectricity in Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$ and its prominent light absorption

Layered perovskites $A_3M_2$O$_7$ are known to exhibit the so-called hybrid improper ferroelectricity. Despite experimentally confirmed cases (e.g. nonmagnetic $M$=Ti and Sn), the ferroelectricity in magnetic Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$ remains a puzzle. Here, the structural, ferroelectric, magnetoelectric, and optical properties of Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$ are systematically investigated. Switchable polarization is directly measured, demonstrating its ferroelectricity. In addition, magnetoelectric response is also evidenced, implying the coupling between magnetism and ferroelectricity. Furthermore, strong visible light absorption is observed, which can be understood from its electronic structure. Its direct and appropriate band gap, as well as wide conducting bands, makes Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$ a potential candidate for ferroelectric photoelectric applications.

Data based reconstruction of complex multiplex networks

It has been recognized that many complex dynamical systems in the real world require a description in terms of multiplex networks, where a set of common, mutually connected nodes belong to distinct network layers and play a different role in each layer. In spite of recent progress towards data based inference of single-layer networks, to reconstruct complex systems with a multiplex structure remains largely open. We articulate a mean-field based maximum likelihood estimation framework to solve this outstanding and challenging problem. We demonstrate the power of the reconstruction framework and characterize its performance using binary time series from a class of prototypical duplex network systems that host two distinct types of spreading dynamics. In addition to validating the framework using synthetic and real-world multiplex networks, we carry out a detailed analysis to elucidate the impacts of structural and dynamical parameters as well as noise on the reconstruction accuracy and robustness.

Fast Super-resolution 3D SAR Imaging Using an Unfolded Deep Network

For 3D Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging, one typical approach is to achieve the cross-track 1D focusing for each range-azimuth pixel after obtaining a stack of 2D complex-valued images. The cross-track focusing is the main difficulty as its aperture length is limited and the antenna positions are usually non-uniformly distributed. Sparsity regularization methods are widely used to tackle these problems. However, these methods are of obvious limitations. The most well-known ones are their heavy computational burdens and unsatisfied stabilities. In this letter, an efficient deep network-based cross-track imaging method is proposed. When trained, the imaging process, i.e. the forward propagation of the network, is made up of simple matrix-vector calculations and element-wise nonlinearity operations, which significantly speed up the imaging. Also, we find that the deep network is of good robustness against noise and model errors. Comprehensive simulations and experiments have been carried out, and the superiority of the proposed method can be clearly seen.

A Method of Alignment of the Plastic Scintillator Detector of DAMPE

The Plastic Scintillator Detector (PSD) of the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is designed to measure cosmic ray charge (Z) and to act as a veto detector for gamma-ray identification. In order to fully exploit the charge identification potential of the PSD and to enhance its capability to identify the gamma ray events, we develop a PSD detector alignment method. The path length of a given track in the volume of a PSD bar is derived taking into account the shift and rotation alignment corrections. By examining energy spectra of corner-passing events and fully contained events, position shifts and rotations of all PSD bars are obtained, and found to be on average about 1mm and 0.0015 radian respectively. To validate the alignment method, we introduce the artificial shifts and rotations of PSD bars in the detector simulation. These shift and rotation parameters can be recovered successfully by the alignment procedure. As a result of the PSD alignment procedure, the charge resolution of the PSD is improved from $4\%$ to $8\%$ depending on the nuclei.

Multi-Estimator Full Left Ventricle Quantification through Ensemble Learning

Cardiovascular disease accounts for 1 in every 4 deaths in United States. Accurate estimation of structural and functional cardiac parameters is crucial for both diagnosis and disease management. In this work, we develop an ensemble learning framework for more accurate and robust left ventricle (LV) quantification. The framework combines two 1st-level modules: direct estimation module and a segmentation module. The direct estimation module utilizes Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to achieve end-to-end quantification. The CNN is trained by taking 2D cardiac images as input and cardiac parameters as output. The segmentation module utilizes a U-Net architecture for obtaining pixel-wise prediction of the epicardium and endocardium of LV from the background. The binary U-Net output is then analyzed by a separate CNN for estimating the cardiac parameters. We then employ linear regression between the 1st-level predictor and ground truth to learn a 2nd-level predictor that ensembles the results from 1st-level modules for the final estimation. Preliminary results by testing the proposed framework on the LVQuan18 dataset show superior performance of the ensemble learning model over the two base modules.

Modeling 4D fMRI Data via Spatio-Temporal Convolutional Neural Networks (ST-CNN)

Simultaneous modeling of the spatio-temporal variation patterns of brain functional network from 4D fMRI data has been an important yet challenging problem for the field of cognitive neuroscience and medical image analysis. Inspired by the recent success in applying deep learning for functional brain decoding and encoding, in this work we propose a spatio-temporal convolutional neural network (ST-CNN)to jointly learn the spatial and temporal patterns of targeted network from the training data and perform automatic, pin-pointing functional network identification. The proposed ST-CNN is evaluated by the task of identifying the Default Mode Network (DMN) from fMRI data. Results show that while the framework is only trained on one fMRI dataset,it has the sufficient generalizability to identify the DMN from different populations of data as well as different cognitive tasks. Further investigation into the results show that the superior performance of ST-CNN is driven by the jointly-learning scheme, which capture the intrinsic relationship between the spatial and temporal characteristic of DMN and ensures the accurate identification.

An Orbitrap-based laser desorption/ablation mass spectrometer designed for spaceflight

RATIONALE: The investigation of cryogenic planetary environments as potential harbors for extant life and/or contemporary sites of organic synthesis represents an emerging focal point in planetary exploration. Next generation instruments need to be capable of unambiguously determining elemental and/or molecular stoichiometry via highly accurate mass measurements and the separation of isobaric interferences. METHODS: An OrbitrapTM analyzer adapted for spaceflight (referred to as the CosmOrbitrap), coupled with a commercial pulsed UV laser source (266 nm), is shown to successfully characterize a variety of planetary analog samples via ultrahigh resolution laser desorption/ablation mass spectrometry. The materials analyzed in this study include: jarosite (a hydrous sulfate detected on Mars); magnesium sulfate (a potential component of the subsurface ocean on Europa); uracil (a nucleobase of RNA); and a variety of amino acids. RESULTS: The instrument configuration tested here enables: measurement of major elements and organic molecules with ultrahigh mass resolution (m/Δm higher than 120,000, FWHM); quantification of isotopic abundances with 1.0% (2σ) precision; and, identification of highly accurate masses within 3.2 ppm of absolute values. The analysis of a residue of a dilute solution of amino acids demonstrates the capacity to detect twelve amino acids in positive ion mode at concentrations as low as 1 pmol/mm2 while maintaining mass resolution and accuracy requirements. CONCLUSIONS: The CosmOrbitrap mass analyzer is highly sensitive and delivers mass resolution/accuracy unmatched by any instrument sent into orbit or launched into deep space. This prototype instrument, which maps to a spaceflight implementation, represents a missionenabling technology capable of advancing planetary exploration for decades to come.
