Dynamics and flow effects in the Beris-Edwards system modelling nematic liquid crystals

We consider the Beris-Edwards system modelling incompressible liquid crystal flows of nematic type. This couples a Navier-Stokes system for the fluid velocity with a parabolic reaction-convection-diffusion equation for the Q-tensors describing the direction of liquid crystal molecules. In this paper, we study the effect that the flow has on the dynamics of the Q-tensors, by considering two fundamental aspects: the preservation of eigenvalue-range and the dynamical emergence of defects in the limit of high Ericksen number

Global strong solutions of the full Navier-Stokes and $Q$-tensor system for nematic liquid crystal flows in $2D$: existence and long-time behavior

We consider a full Navier-Stokes and $Q$-tensor system for incompressible liquid crystal flows of nematic type. In the two dimensional periodic case, we prove the existence and uniqueness of global strong solutions that are uniformly bounded in time. This result is obtained without any smallness assumption on the physical parameter $ξ$ that measures the ratio between tumbling and aligning effects of a shear flow exerting over the liquid crystal directors. Moreover, we show the uniqueness of asymptotic limit for each global strong solution as time goes to infinity and provide an uniform estimate on the convergence rate.

A Wasserstein gradient flow approach to Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations

The Poisson-Nernst-Planck system of equations used to model ionic transport is interpreted as a gradient flow for the Wasserstein distance and a free energy in the space of probability measures with finite second moment. A variational scheme is then set up and is the starting point of the construction of global weak solutions in a unified framework for the cases of both linear and nonlinear diffusion. The proof of the main results relies on the derivation of extra estimates based on the flow interchange technique developed by Matthes, McCann, and Savaré.

Dynamic Cubic Instability in a 2D Q-tensor Model for Liquid Crystals

We consider a four-elastic-constant Landau-de Gennes energy characterizing nematic liquid crystal configurations described using the $Q$-tensor formalism. The energy contains a cubic term and is unbounded from below. We study dynamical effects produced by the presence of this cubic term by considering an $L^2$ gradient flow generated by this energy. We work in two dimensions and concentrate on understanding the relations between the physicality of the initial data and the global well-posedness of the system.

On the rigidity of nematic liquid crystal flow on $S^2$

In this paper we establish the uniformity property of a simplified Ericksen-Leslie system modelling the hydrodynamics of nematic liquid crystals on the two dimensional unit sphere $S^2$, namely the uniform convergence in $L^2$ to a steady state exponentially as t tends to infinity. The main assumption, similar to Topping [15], concerns the equation of liquid crystal director $d$ and states that at infinity time, a weak limit $d_\infty$ and any bubble $ω_i$($1\le i\le l$) share a common orientation. As consequences, the uniformity property holds under various types of small initial data.

Global weak solution for a coupled compressible Navier-Stokes and Q-tensor system

In this paper, we study a coupled compressible Navier-Stokes/Q-tensor system modeling the nematic liquid crystal flow in a three-dimensional bounded spatial domain. The existence and long time dynamics of globally defined weak solutions for the coupled system are established, using weak convergence methods, compactness and interpolation arguments. The symmetry and traceless properties of the Q-tensor play key roles in this process.

Strong solutions, global regularity and stability of a hydrodynamic system modeling vesicle and fluid interactions

In this paper, we study a hydrodynamic system modeling the deformation of vesicle membranes in incompressible viscous fluids. The system consists of the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with a fourth order phase-field equation. In the three dimensional case, we prove the existence/uniqueness of local strong solutions for arbitrary initial data as well as global strong solutions under the large viscosity assumption. We also establish some regularity criteria in terms of the velocity for local smooth solutions. Finally, we investigate the stability of the system near local minimizers of the elastic bending energy.

On the General Ericksen-Leslie System: Parodi's Relation, Well-posedness and Stability

In this paper we investigate the role of Parodi's relation in the well-posedness and stability of the general Ericksen-Leslie system modeling nematic liquid crystal flows. First, we give a formal physical derivation of the Ericksen-Leslie system through an appropriate energy variational approach under Parodi's relation, in which we can distinguish the conservative/dissipative parts of the induced elastic stress. Next, we prove global well-posedness and long-time behavior of the Ericksen-Leslie system under the assumption that the viscosity $μ_4$ is sufficiently large. Finally, under Parodi's relation, we show the global well-posedness and Lyapunov stability for the Ericksen-Leslie system near local energy minimizers. The connection between Parodi's relation and linear stability of the Ericksen-Leslie system is also discussed.

Analysis of a diffuse-interface model for the binary viscous incompressible fluids with thermo-induced Marangoni effects

In this paper we study the well-posedness and long-time dynamics of a diffuse-interface model for the mixture of two viscous incompressible Newtonian fluids with thermo-induced Marangoni effects. The governing system consists of modified Navier--Stokes equations coupled with phase-field and energy transport equations. We first derive an energy inequality that illustrates the dissipative nature of the system under the assumption that the initial temperature variation is properly small. Then we establish the existence of weak/strong solutions via the energy method and discuss the long-time dynamics as well as stability of the system.

Asymptotic Behavior for a Nematic Liquid Crystal Model with Different Kinematic Transport Properties

We study the asymptotic behavior of global solutions to hydrodynamical systems modeling the nematic liquid crystal flows under kinematic transports for molecules of different shapes. The coupling system consists of Navier-Stokes equations and kinematic transport equations for the molecular orientations. We prove the convergence of global strong solutions to single steady states as time tends to infinity as well as estimates on the convergence rate both in 2D for arbitrary regular initial data and in 3D for certain particular cases.
