THz Near-Field Imaging of Extreme Subwavelength Metal Structures

Modern scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) has become an indispensable tool in material research. However, as the s-SNOM technique marches into the far-infrared (IR) and terahertz (THz) regimes, emerging experiments sometimes produce puzzling results. For example, anomalies in the near-field optical contrast have been widely reported. In this Letter, we systematically investigate a series of extreme subwavelength metallic nanostructures via s-SNOM near-field imaging in the GHz to THz frequency range. We find that the near-field material contrast is greatly impacted by the lateral size of the nanostructure, while the spatial resolution is practically independent of it. The contrast is also strongly affected by the connectivity of the metallic structures to a larger metallic ground plane. The observed effect can be largely explained by a quasi-electrostatic analysis. We also compare the THz s-SNOM results to those of the mid-IR regime, where the size-dependence becomes significant only for smaller structures. Our results reveal that the quantitative analysis of the near-field optical material contrasts in the long-wavelength regime requires a careful assessment of the size and configuration of metallic (optically conductive) structures.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: Principles and Opportunities

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), also known as intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs), or large intelligent surfaces (LISs), have received significant attention for their potential to enhance the capacity and coverage of wireless networks by smartly reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment. Therefore, RISs are considered a promising technology for the sixth-generation (6G) of communication networks. In this context, we provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art on RISs, with focus on their operating principles, performance evaluation, beamforming design and resource management, applications of machine learning to RIS-enhanced wireless networks, as well as the integration of RISs with other emerging technologies. We describe the basic principles of RISs both from physics and communications perspectives, based on which we present performance evaluation of multi-antenna assisted RIS systems. In addition, we systematically survey existing designs for RIS-enhanced wireless networks encompassing performance analysis, information theory, and performance optimization perspectives. Furthermore, we survey existing research contributions that apply machine learning for tackling challenges in dynamic scenarios, such as random fluctuations of wireless channels and user mobility in RIS-enhanced wireless networks. Last but not least, we identify major issues and research opportunities associated with the integration of RISs and other emerging technologies for applications to next-generation networks.

ELSD: Efficient Line Segment Detector and Descriptor

We present the novel Efficient Line Segment Detector and Descriptor (ELSD) to simultaneously detect line segments and extract their descriptors in an image. Unlike the traditional pipelines that conduct detection and description separately, ELSD utilizes a shared feature extractor for both detection and description, to provide the essential line features to the higher-level tasks like SLAM and image matching in real time. First, we design the one-stage compact model, and propose to use the mid-point, angle and length as the minimal representation of line segment, which also guarantees the center-symmetry. The non-centerness suppression is proposed to filter out the fragmented line segments caused by lines' intersections. The fine offset prediction is designed to refine the mid-point localization. Second, the line descriptor branch is integrated with the detector branch, and the two branches are jointly trained in an end-to-end manner. In the experiments, the proposed ELSD achieves the state-of-the-art performance on the Wireframe dataset and YorkUrban dataset, in both accuracy and efficiency. The line description ability of ELSD also outperforms the previous works on the line matching task.

Image Inpainting by End-to-End Cascaded Refinement with Mask Awareness

Inpainting arbitrary missing regions is challenging because learning valid features for various masked regions is nontrivial. Though U-shaped encoder-decoder frameworks have been witnessed to be successful, most of them share a common drawback of mask unawareness in feature extraction because all convolution windows (or regions), including those with various shapes of missing pixels, are treated equally and filtered with fixed learned kernels. To this end, we propose our novel mask-aware inpainting solution. Firstly, a Mask-Aware Dynamic Filtering (MADF) module is designed to effectively learn multi-scale features for missing regions in the encoding phase. Specifically, filters for each convolution window are generated from features of the corresponding region of the mask. The second fold of mask awareness is achieved by adopting Point-wise Normalization (PN) in our decoding phase, considering that statistical natures of features at masked points differentiate from those of unmasked points. The proposed PN can tackle this issue by dynamically assigning point-wise scaling factor and bias. Lastly, our model is designed to be an end-to-end cascaded refinement one. Supervision information such as reconstruction loss, perceptual loss and total variation loss is incrementally leveraged to boost the inpainting results from coarse to fine. Effectiveness of the proposed framework is validated both quantitatively and qualitatively via extensive experiments on three public datasets including Places2, CelebA and Paris StreetView.

Speed Planning Using Bezier Polynomials with Trapezoidal Corridors

To generate safe and real-time trajectories for an autonomous vehicle in dynamic environments, path and speed decoupled planning methods are often considered. This paper studies speed planning, which mainly deals with dynamic obstacle avoidance given the planning path. The main challenges lie in the decisions in non-convex space and the trade-off between safety, comfort and efficiency performances. This work uses dynamic programming to search heuristic waypoints on the S-T graph and to construct convex feasible spaces. Further, a piecewise Bezier polynomials optimization approach with trapezoidal corridors is presented, which theoretically guarantees the safety and optimality of the trajectory. The simulations verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Everything Has a Cause: Leveraging Causal Inference in Legal Text Analysis

Causal inference is the process of capturing cause-effect relationship among variables. Most existing works focus on dealing with structured data, while mining causal relationship among factors from unstructured data, like text, has been less examined, but is of great importance, especially in the legal domain. In this paper, we propose a novel Graph-based Causal Inference (GCI) framework, which builds causal graphs from fact descriptions without much human involvement and enables causal inference to facilitate legal practitioners to make proper decisions. We evaluate the framework on a challenging similar charge disambiguation task. Experimental results show that GCI can capture the nuance from fact descriptions among multiple confusing charges and provide explainable discrimination, especially in few-shot settings. We also observe that the causal knowledge contained in GCI can be effectively injected into powerful neural networks for better performance and interpretability.

Mobile Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for NOMA Networks: Federated Learning Approaches

A novel framework of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs)-enhanced indoor wireless networks is proposed, where an RIS mounted on the robot is invoked to enable mobility of the RIS and enhance the service quality for mobile users. Meanwhile, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) techniques are adopted to further increase the spectrum efficiency since RISs are capable to provide NOMA with artificial controlled channel conditions, which can be seen as a beneficial operation condition to obtain NOMA gains. To optimize the sum rate of all users, a deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm is invoked to optimize the deployment and phase shifts of the mobile RIS as well as the power allocation policy. In order to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of agent training for the DDPG agents, a federated learning (FL) concept is adopted to enable multiple agents to simultaneously explore similar environments and exchange experiences. We also proved that with the same random exploring policy, the FL armed deep reinforcement learning (DRL) agents can theoretically obtain a reward gain compare to the independent agents. Our simulation results indicate that the mobile RIS scheme can significantly outperform the fixed RIS paradigm, which provides about three times data rate gain compare to the fixed RIS paradigm. Moreover, the NOMA scheme is capable to achieve a gain of 42% in contrast with the OMA scheme in terms of sum rate. Finally, the multi-cell simulation proved that the FL enhanced DDPG algorithm has a superior convergence rate and optimization performance than the independent training framework.

Self-supervised Learning: Generative or Contrastive

Deep supervised learning has achieved great success in the last decade. However, its deficiencies of dependence on manual labels and vulnerability to attacks have driven people to explore a better solution. As an alternative, self-supervised learning attracts many researchers for its soaring performance on representation learning in the last several years. Self-supervised representation learning leverages input data itself as supervision and benefits almost all types of downstream tasks. In this survey, we take a look into new self-supervised learning methods for representation in computer vision, natural language processing, and graph learning. We comprehensively review the existing empirical methods and summarize them into three main categories according to their objectives: generative, contrastive, and generative-contrastive (adversarial). We further investigate related theoretical analysis work to provide deeper thoughts on how self-supervised learning works. Finally, we briefly discuss open problems and future directions for self-supervised learning. An outline slide for the survey is provided.

Pseudo-ISP: Learning Pseudo In-camera Signal Processing Pipeline from A Color Image Denoiser

The success of deep denoisers on real-world color photographs usually relies on the modeling of sensor noise and in-camera signal processing (ISP) pipeline. Performance drop will inevitably happen when the sensor and ISP pipeline of test images are different from those for training the deep denoisers (i.e., noise discrepancy). In this paper, we present an unpaired learning scheme to adapt a color image denoiser for handling test images with noise discrepancy. We consider a practical training setting, i.e., a pre-trained denoiser, a set of test noisy images, and an unpaired set of clean images. To begin with, the pre-trained denoiser is used to generate the pseudo clean images for the test images. Pseudo-ISP is then suggested to jointly learn the pseudo ISP pipeline and signal-dependent rawRGB noise model using the pairs of test and pseudo clean images. We further apply the learned pseudo ISP and rawRGB noise model to clean color images to synthesize realistic noisy images for denoiser adaption. Pseudo-ISP is effective in synthesizing realistic noisy sRGB images, and improved denoising performance can be achieved by alternating between Pseudo-ISP training and denoiser adaption. Experiments show that our Pseudo-ISP not only can boost simple Gaussian blurring-based denoiser to achieve competitive performance against CBDNet, but also is effective in improving state-of-the-art deep denoisers, e.g., CBDNet and RIDNet.

Understanding WeChat User Preferences and "Wow" Diffusion

WeChat is the largest social instant messaging platform in China, with 1.1 billion monthly active users. "Top Stories" is a novel friend-enhanced recommendation engine in WeChat, in which users can read articles based on preferences of both their own and their friends. Specifically, when a user reads an article by opening it, the "click" behavior is private. Moreover, if the user clicks the "wow" button, (only) her/his direct connections will be aware of this action/preference. Based on the unique WeChat data, we aim to understand user preferences and "wow" diffusion in Top Stories at different levels. We have made some interesting discoveries. For instance, the "wow" probability of one user is negatively correlated with the number of connected components that are formed by her/his active friends, but the click probability is the opposite. We further study to what extent users' "wow" and click behavior can be predicted from their social connections. To address this problem, we present a hierarchical graph representation learning based model DiffuseGNN, which is capable of capturing the structure-based social observations discovered above. Our experiments show that the proposed method can significantly improve the prediction performance compared with alternative methods.

Diversity in immunogenomics: the value and the challenge

With the advent of high-throughput sequencing technologies, the fields of immunogenomics and adaptive immune receptor repertoire research are facing both opportunities and challenges. Adaptive immune receptor repertoire sequencing (AIRR-seq) has become an increasingly important tool to characterize T and B cell responses in settings of interest. However, the majority of AIRR-seq studies conducted so far were performed in individuals of European ancestry, restricting the ability to identify variation in human adaptive immune responses across populations and limiting their applications. As AIRR-seq studies depend on the ability to assign VDJ sequence reads to the correct germline gene segments, efforts to characterize the genomic loci that encode adaptive immune receptor genes in different populations are urgently needed. The availability of comprehensive germline gene databases and further applications of AIRR-seq studies to individuals of non-European ancestry will substantially enhance our understanding of human adaptive immune responses, promote the development of effective diagnostics and treatments, and eventually advance precision medicine.

A Novel Graph-based Computation Offloading Strategy for Workflow Applications in Mobile Edge Computing

With the fast development of mobile edge computing (MEC), there is an increasing demand for running complex applications on the edge. These complex applications can be represented as workflows where task dependencies are explicitly specified. To achieve better Quality of Service (QoS), for instance, faster response time and lower energy consumption, computation offloading is widely used in the MEC environment. However, many existing computation offloading strategies only focus on independent computation tasks but overlook the task dependencies. Meanwhile, most of these strategies are based on search algorithms such as particle swarm optimization (PSO), genetic algorithm (GA) which are often time-consuming and hence not suitable for many delay-sensitive complex applications in MEC. Therefore, a highly efficient graph-based strategy was proposed in our recent work but it can only deal with simple workflow applications with linear (namely sequential) structure. For solving these problems, a novel graph-based strategy is proposed for workflow applications in MEC. Specifically, this strategy can deal with complex workflow applications with nonlinear (viz. parallel, selective and iterative) structures. Meanwhile, the offloading decision plan with the lowest energy consumption of the end-device under the deadline constraint can be found by using the graph-based partition technique. We have comprehensively evaluated our strategy using both a real-world case study on a MEC based UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) delivery system and extensive simulation experiments on the FogWorkflowSim platform for MEC based workflow applications. The evaluation results successfully demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed strategy and its overall better performance than other representative strategies.

Artificial Intelligence Enhanced Rapid and Efficient Diagnosis of Mycoplasma Pneumoniae Pneumonia in Children Patients

Artificial intelligence methods have been increasingly turning into a potentially powerful tool in the diagnosis and management of diseases. In this study, we utilized logistic regression (LR), decision tree (DT), gradient boosted decision tree (GBDT), support vector machine (SVM), and multilayer perceptron (MLP) as machine learning models to rapidly diagnose the mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MPP) in children patients. The classification task was carried out after applying the preprocessing procedure to the MPP dataset. The most efficient results are obtained by GBDT. It provides the best performance with an accuracy of 93.7%. In contrast to standard raw feature weighting, the feature importance takes the underlying correlation structure of the features into account. The most crucial feature of GBDT is the "pulmonary infiltrates range" with a score of 0.5925, followed by "cough" (0.0953) and "pleural effusion" (0.0492). We publicly share our full implementation with the dataset and trained models at https://github.com/zhenguonie/2021_AI4MPP.

Boost-S: Gradient Boosted Trees for Spatial Data and Its Application to FDG-PET Imaging Data

Boosting Trees are one of the most successful statistical learning approaches that involve sequentially growing an ensemble of simple regression trees (i.e., "weak learners"). However, gradient boosted trees are not yet available for spatially correlated data. This paper proposes a new gradient Boosted Trees algorithm for Spatial Data (Boost-S) with covariate information. Boost-S integrates the spatial correlation structure into the classical framework of gradient boosted trees. Each tree is grown by solving a regularized optimization problem, where the objective function involves two penalty terms on tree complexity and takes into account the underlying spatial correlation. A computationally-efficient algorithm is proposed to obtain the ensemble trees. The proposed Boost-S is applied to the spatially-correlated FDG-PET (fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography) imaging data collected during cancer chemoradiotherapy. Our numerical investigations successfully demonstrate the advantages of the proposed Boost-S over existing approaches for this particular application.

EdgeWorkflowReal: An Edge Computing based Workflow Execution Engine for Smart Systems

Current cloud-based smart systems suffer from weaknesses such as high response latency, limited network bandwidth and the restricted computing power of smart end devices which seriously affect the system's QoS (Quality of Service). Recently, given its advantages of low latency, high bandwidth and location awareness, edge computing has become a promising solution for smart systems. However, the development of edge computing based smart systems is a very challenging job for software developers who do not have the skills for the creation of edge computing environments. The management of edge computing resources and computing tasks is also very challenging. Workflow technology has been widely used in smart systems to automate task and resource management, but there does not yet exist a real-world deployable edge computing based workflow execution engine. To fill this gap, we present EdgeWorkflowReal, an edge computing based workflow execution engine for smart systems. EdgeWorkflowReal supports: 1) automatic creation of a real edge computing environment according to user settings; 2) visualized modelling of edge workflow applications; and 3) automatic deployment, monitoring and performance evaluation of edge workflow applications in a smart system.

To this end, the fundamentals of this framework are first introduced. Then, a number of communication and AI techniques are proposed to improve the quality of experiences of terrestrial MUs. To this end, federated learning and reinforcement learning are introduced for intelligent task offloading and computing resource allocation. For each learning technique, motivations, challenges, and representative results are introduced. Finally, several key technical challenges and open research issues of the proposed framework are summarized.
