A novel monotonous finite volume element scheme for convection dominant diffusion problem

One novel monotonous finite volume element (MFVE) scheme is put forward for convection dominant diffusion problem. The main contributions of this paper include four aspects. Firstly, one upwind sub-control volume, called upwind volume, is introduced for the discretization of the convection term similar to the upwind element, which leads to the upwind property. Secondly, one first-order linear discrete operator for the convection term in the balance equation is directly obtained by numerical integration in upwind volume, which is different from the classical finite volume methods.Thirdly, one asymptotic expansion of gradient functions in the dual element of each node is derived by one extension interpolation function. Then, one second-order nonlinear discrete operator for the convection term is constructed by the asymptotic expansion and error estimation of its FVE solution, where some perturbed coefficients are skillfully put into the expansion, which serves as a high-order correction. Fourthly, one novel two-order MFVE scheme, also accompanied by another one-order MFVE, is designed for convection-dominated diffusion problems together with one positivity-preserving finite volume element (PFVE) discrete diffusive operator. The L2 norm of the error of the approximate solution is derived. Finally, numerical results validate theoretical conclusions.

Development and Evaluation of an Online Home Energy Management Strategy for Load Coordination in Smart Homes with Renewable Energy Sources

In this paper, a real time implementable load coordination strategy is developed for the optimization of electric demands in a smart home. The strategy minimizes the electricity cost to the home owner, while limiting the disruptions associated with the deferring of flexible power loads. A multi-objective nonlinear mixed integer programming is formulated as a sequential model predictive control, which is then solved using genetic algorithm. The load shifting benefits obtained by deploying an advanced coordination strategy are compared against a baseline controller for various home characteristics, such as location, size and equipment. The simulation study shows that the deployment of the smart home energy management strategy achieves approximately 5% reduction in grid cost compared to a baseline strategy. This is achieved by deferring approximately 50\% of the flexible loads, which is possible due to the use of the stationary energy storage.

Strong attractors for the nonclassical diffusion equation with fading memory in time-dependent spaces

In this paper, we discuss the long-time behavior of solutions to the nonclassical diffusion equation with fading memory when the nonlinear term $f$ fulfills the polynomial growth of arbitrary order and the external force $ g(x)\in L^{2}(Ω)$. In the framework of time-dependent spaces, we verify the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions by the Galerkin method, then we obtain the existence of the time-dependent global attractor $\mathscr{A}=\{A_t\}_{t\in \mathbb{R}}$ in $\mathcal{M}_t^1$.

A Semi Empirical Approach to a Physically Based Aging Model for Home Energy Management Systems

A growing interest in the study of aging related phenomena in lithium-ion batteries is propelled by the increasing utilization of energy storage systems in electric vehicles and in buildings as stationery energy accumulators paired with renewable energy sources. This paper proposes a mixed-degradation model approach that combines the benefits of a semi-empirical approach with that of a physics-based model. This enables easy calibration for different battery chemistries, the ability to extrapolate when necessary, and is computationally efficient enough to be coupled with real-time running control systems. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, the effect of two different control strategies in a smart home energy management system is demonstrated on the aging of a Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.

Representation of measures of noncompactness and its applications related to an initial-value problem in Banach spaces

The purpose of this paper is devoted to studying representation of measures of non generalized compactness, in particular, measures of noncompactness, of non-weak compactness, and of non-super weak compactness, etc, defined on Banach spaces and its applications. With the aid of a three-time order preserving embedding theorem, we show that for every Banach space $X$, there exist a Banach function space $C(K)$ for some compact Hausdorff space $K$, and an order-preserving affine mapping $\mathbb T$ from the super space $\mathscr B$ of all nonempty bounded subsets of $X$ endowed with the Hausdorff metric to the positive cone $C(K)^+$ of $C(K)$ such that for every convex measure, in particular, regular measure, homogeneous measure, sublinear measure of non generalized compactness $μ$ on $X$, there is a convex function $\digamma$ on the cone $V=\mathbb T(\mathscr B)$ which is Lipschitzian on each bounded set of $V$ such that \[\digamma(\mathbb T(B))=μ(B),\;\;\forall\;B\in\mathscr B.\] As its applications, we show a class of basic integral inequalities related to an initial-value problem in Banach spaces, and prove a solvability result of the initial-value problem, which is an extension of some classical results due to Goebel, Rzymowski, and Banaś.

On countable determination of the Kuratowski measure of noncompactness

A long-standing question in the theory of measures of noncompactness is that for the Kuratowski measure of noncompactness $α$ defined on a metric space $M$, and for every bounded subset $B\subset M$, is there a countable subset $B_0\subset B$ such that $α(B_0)=α(B)$? In this paper, we give an affirmative answer to the question above. It is done by showing that for each nonempty set $B$ of a Banach space, there is a countable subset $B_0\subset B$ so that $B$ is strongly finitely representable in $B_0$, and that there is a free ultrafilter $\mathcal U$ so that $B$ is affinely isometric to a subset of the ultrapower $[{\rm co}(B_0)]_\mathcal U$ of ${\rm co}(B_0)$.

The Two-Point Angular Correlation Function and BATSE Sky Exposure

The Two-Point Angular Correlation Function is a standard analysis tool used to study angular anisotropies. Since BATSE's sky exposure (the angular sampling of gamma-ray bursts) is anisotropic, the TPACF should at some point identify anisotropies in BATSE burst catalogs due to sky exposure. The effects of BATSE sky exposure are thus explored here for BATSE 3B and 4B catalogs. Sky-exposure effects are found to be small.
