Unsupervised Video Person Re-identification via Noise and Hard frame Aware Clustering

Unsupervised video-based person re-identification (re-ID) methods extract richer features from video tracklets than image-based ones. The state-of-the-art methods utilize clustering to obtain pseudo-labels and train the models iteratively. However, they underestimate the influence of two kinds of frames in the tracklet: 1) noise frames caused by detection errors or heavy occlusions exist in the tracklet, which may be allocated with unreliable labels during clustering; 2) the tracklet also contains hard frames caused by pose changes or partial occlusions, which are difficult to distinguish but informative. This paper proposes a Noise and Hard frame Aware Clustering (NHAC) method. NHAC consists of a graph trimming module and a node re-sampling module. The graph trimming module obtains stable graphs by removing noise frame nodes to improve the clustering accuracy. The node re-sampling module enhances the training of hard frame nodes to learn rich tracklet information. Experiments conducted on two video-based datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed NHAC under the unsupervised re-ID setting.

High sensitivity and full-circle optical rotary sensor for non-cooperatively tracing wrist tremor with nanoradian resolution

An optical rotary sensor based on laser self-mixing interferometry is proposed, which enables noncontact and full-circle rotation measurement of non-cooperative targets with high resolution and sensitivity. The prototype demonstrates that the resolution is 0.1$μ$rad and the linearity is 2.33$*$10$^{-4}$. Stability of the prototype is 2$μ$rad over 3600s and the repeatability error is below 0.84$°$ under 9-gruop full-circle tests. The theoretical resolution reaches up to 16nrad. Random rotation has been successfully traced with a bionic hand to simulate the tremor process. Error analysis and limitation discussion have been also carried out in the paper. Although the accuracy needs further improvement compared with the best rotary sensor, this method has its unique advantages of non-cooperative target sensing, high sensitivity and electromagnetic immunity. Hence, the optical rotary sensor provides a promising alternative in precise rotation measurement, tremor tracing and nano-motion monitoring.

A LiDAR Assisted Control Module with High Precision in Parking Scenarios for Autonomous Driving Vehicle

Autonomous driving has been quite promising in recent years. The public has seen Robotaxi delivered by Waymo, Baidu, Cruise, and so on. While autonomous driving vehicles certainly have a bright future, we have to admit that it is still a long way to go for products such as Robotaxi. On the other hand, in less complex scenarios autonomous driving may have the potentiality to reliably outperform humans. For example, humans are good at interactive tasks (while autonomous driving systems usually do not), but we are often incompetent for tasks with strict precision demands. In this paper, we introduce a real-world, industrial scenario of which human drivers are not capable. The task required the ego vehicle to keep a stationary lateral distance (i.e. 3? <= 5 centimeters) with respect to a reference. To address this challenge, we redesigned the control module from Baidu Apollo open-source autonomous driving system. A precise (3? <= 2 centimeters) Error Feedback System was first built to partly replace the localization module. Then we investigated the control module thoroughly and added a real-time calibration algorithm to gain extra precision. We also built a simulation to fine-tune the control parameters. After all those works, the results are encouraging, showing that an end-to-end lateral precision with 3? <= 5 centimeters has been achieved. Further, we show that the results not only outperformed original Apollo modules but also beat specially trained and highly experienced human test drivers.

AISHELL-3: A Multi-speaker Mandarin TTS Corpus and the Baselines

In this paper, we present AISHELL-3, a large-scale and high-fidelity multi-speaker Mandarin speech corpus which could be used to train multi-speaker Text-to-Speech (TTS) systems. The corpus contains roughly 85 hours of emotion-neutral recordings spoken by 218 native Chinese mandarin speakers. Their auxiliary attributes such as gender, age group and native accents are explicitly marked and provided in the corpus. Accordingly, transcripts in Chinese character-level and pinyin-level are provided along with the recordings. We present a baseline system that uses AISHELL-3 for multi-speaker Madarin speech synthesis. The multi-speaker speech synthesis system is an extension on Tacotron-2 where a speaker verification model and a corresponding loss regarding voice similarity are incorporated as the feedback constraint. We aim to use the presented corpus to build a robust synthesis model that is able to achieve zero-shot voice cloning. The system trained on this dataset also generalizes well on speakers that are never seen in the training process. Objective evaluation results from our experiments show that the proposed multi-speaker synthesis system achieves high voice similarity concerning both speaker embedding similarity and equal error rate measurement. The dataset, baseline system code and generated samples are available online.

Multi-objective Feature Selection with Missing Data in Classification

Feature selection (FS) is an important research topic in machine learning. Usually, FS is modelled as a+ bi-objective optimization problem whose objectives are: 1) classification accuracy; 2) number of features. One of the main issues in real-world applications is missing data. Databases with missing data are likely to be unreliable. Thus, FS performed on a data set missing some data is also unreliable. In order to directly control this issue plaguing the field, we propose in this study a novel modelling of FS: we include reliability as the third objective of the problem. In order to address the modified problem, we propose the application of the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-III (NSGA-III). We selected six incomplete data sets from the University of California Irvine (UCI) machine learning repository. We used the mean imputation method to deal with the missing data. In the experiments, k-nearest neighbors (K-NN) is used as the classifier to evaluate the feature subsets. Experimental results show that the proposed three-objective model coupled with NSGA-III efficiently addresses the FS problem for the six data sets included in this study.

The Multi-speaker Multi-style Voice Cloning Challenge 2021

The Multi-speaker Multi-style Voice Cloning Challenge (M2VoC) aims to provide a common sizable dataset as well as a fair testbed for the benchmarking of the popular voice cloning task. Specifically, we formulate the challenge to adapt an average TTS model to the stylistic target voice with limited data from target speaker, evaluated by speaker identity and style similarity. The challenge consists of two tracks, namely few-shot track and one-shot track, where the participants are required to clone multiple target voices with 100 and 5 samples respectively. There are also two sub-tracks in each track. For sub-track a, to fairly compare different strategies, the participants are allowed to use only the training data provided by the organizer strictly. For sub-track b, the participants are allowed to use any data publicly available. In this paper, we present a detailed explanation on the tasks and data used in the challenge, followed by a summary of submitted systems and evaluation results.

INTERSPEECH 2021 ConferencingSpeech Challenge: Towards Far-field Multi-Channel Speech Enhancement for Video Conferencing

The ConferencingSpeech 2021 challenge is proposed to stimulate research on far-field multi-channel speech enhancement for video conferencing. The challenge consists of two separate tasks: 1) Task 1 is multi-channel speech enhancement with single microphone array and focusing on practical application with real-time requirement and 2) Task 2 is multi-channel speech enhancement with multiple distributed microphone arrays, which is a non-real-time track and does not have any constraints so that participants could explore any algorithms to obtain high speech quality. Targeting the real video conferencing room application, the challenge database was recorded from real speakers and all recording facilities were located by following the real setup of conferencing room. In this challenge, we open-sourced the list of open source clean speech and noise datasets, simulation scripts, and a baseline system for participants to develop their own system. The final ranking of the challenge will be decided by the subjective evaluation which is performed using Absolute Category Ratings (ACR) to estimate Mean Opinion Score (MOS), speech MOS (S-MOS), and noise MOS (N-MOS). This paper describes the challenge, tasks, datasets, and subjective evaluation. The baseline system which is a complex ratio mask based neural network and its experimental results are also presented.

StablePose: Learning 6D Object Poses from Geometrically Stable Patches

We introduce the concept of geometric stability to the problem of 6D object pose estimation and propose to learn pose inference based on geometrically stable patches extracted from observed 3D point clouds. According to the theory of geometric stability analysis, a minimal set of three planar/cylindrical patches are geometrically stable and determine the full 6DoFs of the object pose. We train a deep neural network to regress 6D object pose based on geometrically stable patch groups via learning both intra-patch geometric features and inter-patch contextual features. A subnetwork is jointly trained to predict per-patch poses. This auxiliary task is a relaxation of the group pose prediction: A single patch cannot determine the full 6DoFs but is able to improve pose accuracy in its corresponding DoFs. Working with patch groups makes our method generalize well for random occlusion and unseen instances. The method is easily amenable to resolve symmetry ambiguities. Our method achieves the state-of-the-art results on public benchmarks compared not only to depth-only but also to RGBD methods. It also performs well in category-level pose estimation.

A Dual-level Model Predictive Control Scheme for Multi-timescale Dynamical Systems--Extended Version

So far, many control algorithms have been developed for singularly perturbed systems. However, in many industrial processes, enforcing closed-loop fast-slow dynamics for peculiarly non-separable ones is a prior request and a crucial issue to be resolved. Aiming at the above problem, this paper presents two dual-level model predictive control (MPC) algorithms for two-timescale dynamical systems with unknown bounded disturbance and input constraint. The proposed algorithms, each one composed of two regulators working in slow and fast time scales, are designed to generate closed-loop separable dynamics at the high and low levels. As a key feature, the proposed algorithms are not only suitable for singularly perturbed systems, but also capable of imposing separable closed-loop performance for dynamics that are non-separable and strongly coupled. The recursive feasibility and convergence properties are proven under suitable assumptions. The simulation results on controlling a Boiler Turbine (BT) system, including the comparisons with other classic controllers are reported, which show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Galaxy Clusters from the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys. I. Cluster Detection

Based on the photometric redshift catalog of Zou H. et al. (2019), we apply a fast clustering algorithm to identify 540,432 galaxy clusters at $z\lesssim1$ in the DESI legacy imaging surveys, which cover a sky area of about 20,000 deg$^2$. Monte-Carlo simulations indicate that the false detection rate of our detecting method is about 3.1\%. The total masses of galaxy clusters are derived using a calibrated richness--mass relation that are based on the observations of X-ray emission and Sunyaev \& Zel'dovich effect. The median redshift and mass of our detected clusters are about 0.53 and $1.23\times10^{14} M_\odot$, respectively. Comparing with previous clusters identified using the data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we can recognize most of them, especially those with high richness. Our catalog will be used for further statistical studies on galaxy clusters and environmental effects on the galaxy evolution, etc.

RTFN: Robust Temporal Feature Network

Time series analysis plays a vital role in various applications, for instance, healthcare, weather prediction, disaster forecast, etc. However, to obtain sufficient shapelets by a feature network is still challenging. To this end, we propose a novel robust temporal feature network (RTFN) that contains temporal feature networks and attentional LSTM networks. The temporal feature networks are built to extract basic features from input data while the attentional LSTM networks are devised to capture complicated shapelets and relationships to enrich features. In experiments, we embed RTFN into supervised structure as a feature extraction network and into unsupervised clustering as an encoder, respectively. The results show that the RTFN-based supervised structure is a winner of 40 out of 85 datasets and the RTFN-based unsupervised clustering performs the best on 4 out of 11 datasets in the UCR2018 archive.

RTFN: A Robust Temporal Feature Network for Time Series Classification

Time series data usually contains local and global patterns. Most of the existing feature networks pay more attention to local features rather than the relationships among them. The latter is, however, also important yet more difficult to explore. To obtain sufficient representations by a feature network is still challenging. To this end, we propose a novel robust temporal feature network (RTFN) for feature extraction in time series classification, containing a temporal feature network (TFN) and an LSTM-based attention network (LSTMaN). TFN is a residual structure with multiple convolutional layers. It functions as a local-feature extraction network to mine sufficient local features from data. LSTMaN is composed of two identical layers, where attention and long short-term memory (LSTM) networks are hybridized. This network acts as a relation extraction network to discover the intrinsic relationships among the extracted features at different positions in sequential data. In experiments, we embed RTFN into a supervised structure as a feature extractor and into an unsupervised structure as an encoder, respectively. The results show that the RTFN-based structures achieve excellent supervised and unsupervised performance on a large number of UCR2018 and UEA2018 datasets.

Asymptotic proximal point methods: finding the global minima with linear convergence for a class of multiple minima problems

We propose and analyze asymptotic proximal point (APP) methods to find the global minimizer for a class of nonconvex, nonsmooth, or even discontinuous multiple minima functions. The method is based on an asymptotic representation of nonconvex proximal points so that it can find the global minimizer without being trapped in saddle points, local minima, or even discontinuities. Our main result shows that the method enjoys the global linear convergence for such a class of functions. Furthermore, the method is derivative-free and its per-iteration cost, i.e., the number of function evaluations, is also bounded, so it has a complexity bound $\mathcal{O}(\log\frac{1}ε)$ for finding a point such that the gap between this point and the global minimizer is less than $ε>0$. Numerical experiments and comparisons in various dimensions from $2$ to $500$ demonstrate the benefits of the method.

Identifiability of Bifactor Models

The bifactor model and its extensions are multidimensional latent variable models, under which each item measures up to one subdimension on top of the primary dimension(s). Despite their wide applications to educational and psychological assessments, this type of multidimensional latent variable models may suffer from non-identifiability, which can further lead to inconsistent parameter estimation and invalid inference. The current work provides a relatively complete characterization of identifiability for the linear and dichotomous bifactor models and the linear extended bifactor model with correlated subdimensions. In addition, similar results for the two-tier models are also developed. Illustrative examples are provided on checking model identifiability through inspecting the factor loading structure. Simulation studies are reported that examine estimation consistency when the identifiability conditions are/are not satisfied.

On Periodical Damping Ratio of a Controlled Dynamical System with Parametric Resonances

This report provides an interpretation on the periodically varying damping ratio of a dynamical system with direct control of oscillation or vibration damping. The principal parametric resonance of the system and a new type of parametric resonance, named "zero-th order" parametric resonance, are investigated by using the method of multiple scales to find approximate, analytical solutions of the system, which provide an interpretation on such damping variations.

New Determination of Fundamental Properties of Palomar 5 Using Deep DESI Imaging Data

The legacy imaging surveys for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument project provides multiplecolor photometric data, which are about 2 mag deeper than the SDSS. In this study, we redetermine the fundamental properties for an old halo globular cluster of Palomar 5 based on these new imaging data, including structure parameters, stellar population parameters, and luminosity and mass functions. These characteristics, together with its tidal tails, are key for dynamical studies of the cluster and constraining the mass model of the Milky Way. By fitting the King model to the radial surface density profile of Palomar 5, we derive the core radius of $r_c$ = 2.96' $\pm$ 0.11', tidal radius of $r_t$ = 17.99' $\pm$ 1.49', and concentration parameter of $c$ = 0.78 $\pm$ 0.04. We apply a Bayesian analysis method to derive the stellar population properties and get an age of 11.508 $\pm$ 0.027 Gyr, metallicity of [Fe/H] = -1.798 $\pm$ 0.014, reddening of $E(B-V)$ = 0.0552 $\pm$ 0.0005, and distance modulus of $(m-M)_0$ = 16.835 $\pm$ 0.006. The main-sequence luminosity and mass functions for both the cluster center, and tidal tails are investigated. The luminosity and mass functions at different distances from the cluster center suggest that there is obvious spatial mass segregation. Many faint low-mass stars have been evaporated at the cluster center and the tidal tails are enhanced by low-mass stars. Both the concentration and relaxation times suggest that Palomar 5 is a totally relaxed system.

Re-identification = Retrieval + Verification: Back to Essence and Forward with a New Metric

Re-identification (re-ID) is currently investigated as a closed-world image retrieval task, and evaluated by retrieval based metrics. The algorithms return ranking lists to users, but cannot tell which images are the true target. In essence, current re-ID overemphasizes the importance of retrieval but underemphasizes that of verification, \textit{i.e.}, all returned images are considered as the target. On the other hand, re-ID should also include the scenario that the query identity does not appear in the gallery. To this end, we go back to the essence of re-ID, \textit{i.e.}, a combination of retrieval and verification in an open-set setting, and put forward a new metric, namely, Genuine Open-set re-ID Metric (GOM). GOM explicitly balances the effect of performing retrieval and verification into a single unified metric. It can also be decomposed into a family of sub-metrics, enabling a clear analysis of re-ID performance. We evaluate the effectiveness of GOM on the re-ID benchmarks, showing its ability to capture important aspects of re-ID performance that have not been taken into account by established metrics so far. Furthermore, we show GOM scores excellent in aligning with human visual evaluation of re-ID performance. Related codes are available at https://github.com/YuanXinCherry/Person-reID-Evaluation

A Liouville theorem for an integral equation of the Ginzburg-Landau type

In this paper, we are concerned with a Liouville-type result of the nonlinear integral equation \begin{equation*} u(x)=\overrightarrow{l}+C_*\int_{\mathbb{R}^{n}}\frac{u(1-|u|^{2})}{|x-y|^{n-α}}dy. \end{equation*} Here $u: \mathbb{R}^{n} \to \mathbb{R}^{k}$ is a bounded, uniformly continuous and differentiable function with $k \geq 1$ and $1<α<n$, $\overrightarrow{l} \in \mathbb{R}^{k}$ is a constant vector, and $C_*$ is a real constant. If $u$ is the finite energy solution, we prove that $|\overrightarrow{l}| \in \{0,1\}$. Furthermore, we also give a Liouville type theorem (i.e., $u \equiv \overrightarrow{l}$).
