Cosmological model-independent constraints on spatial curvature from strong gravitational lensing and type Ia supernova observations

Applying the distance sum rule in strong gravitational lensing (SGL) and type Ia supernova (SN Ia) observations, one can provide an interesting cosmological model-independent method to determine the cosmic curvature parameter $Ω_k$. In this paper, with the newly compiled data sets including 161 galactic-scale SGL systems and 1048 SN Ia data, we place constraints on $Ω_k$ within the framework of three types of lens models extensively used in SGL studies. Moreover, to investigate the effect of different mass lens samples on the results, we divide the SGL sample into three sub-samples based on the center velocity dispersion of intervening galaxies. In the singular isothermal sphere (SIS) and extended power-law lens models, a flat universe is supported with the uncertainty about 0.2, while a closed universe is preferred in the power-law lens model. We find that the choice of lens models and the classification of SGL data actually can influence the constraints on $Ω_k$ significantly.

Expected LHAASO sensitivity to decaying dark matter signatures from dwarf galaxies gamma-ray emission

As a next-generation complex extensive air shower array with a large field of view, the large high altitude air shower observatory (LHAASO) is very sensitive to the very high energy gamma-rays from $\sim$ 300 GeV to 1 PeV, and may thus serve as an important probe for the heavy dark matter (DM) particles. In this study, we make a forecast for the LHAASO sensitivities to the gamma-ray signatures resulting from DM decay in dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies (dSphs) within the LHAASO field of view. Both individual and combined limits for 19 dSphs incorporating the uncertainties of the DM density profile are explored. Owing to the large effective area and strong capability of the photon-proton discrimination, we find that LHASSSO is sensitive to the signatures from decaying DM particles above $\mathcal{O}(1)$ TeV. The LHAASO sensitivity to the DM decay lifetime reaches $\mathcal{O} (10^{26}) \sim \mathcal{O} (10^{28})$ s for several decay channels at the DM mass scale from 1 TeV to 100 TeV.

Prospects for improving cosmological parameter estimation with gravitational-wave standard sirens from Taiji

Taiji, a space-based gravitational-wave observatory, consists of three satellites forming an equilateral triangle with arm length of $3\times 10^6$ km, orbiting around the Sun. Taiji is able to observe the gravitational-wave standard siren events of massive black hole binary (MBHB) merger, which is helpful in probing the expansion of the universe. In this paper, we preliminarily forecast the capability of Taiji for improving cosmological parameter estimation with the gravitational-wave standard siren data. We simulate five-year standard siren data based on three fiducial cosmological models and three models of MBHB's formation and growth. It is found that the standard siren data from Taiji can effectively break the cosmological parameter degeneracies generated by the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies data, especially for dynamical dark energy models. The constraints on cosmological parameters are significantly improved by the data combination CMB+Taiji, compared to the CMB data alone. Compared to the current optical cosmological observations, Taiji can still provide help in improving the cosmological parameter estimation to some extent. In addition, we consider an ideal scenario to investigate the potential of Taiji on constraining cosmological parameters. We conclude that the standard sirens of MBHB from Taiji will become a powerful cosmological probe in the future.

Quantifying the impacts of future gravitational-wave data on constraining interacting dark energy

In this work, we investigate the impacts of the future gravitational-wave (GW) standard siren observation by the Einstein Telescope (ET) on constraining the interacting dark energy (IDE) models. We simulate 1000 GW events in the redshift range of $0\lesssim z \lesssim 5$ based on the 10-year observation of the ET. We combine the simulated GW data with the current mainstream cosmological electromagnetic observations including the cosmic microwave background anisotropies, the baryon acoustic oscillations, and the type Ia supernovae to constrain the IDE models. We consider typical IDE models in the context of a perturbed universe. To avoid the large-scale instability problem for IDE models, we apply the extended parameterized post-Friedmann approach to calculate the cosmological perturbations. We find that the addition of the GW standard siren data could significantly improve the constraint accuracies for most of the cosmological parameters (e.g., $H_{0}$, $w$, and $Ω_{\rm m}$). For the coupling parameter $β$, the constraint errors could also be slightly improved when adding the GW data in the cosmological fit.

Constraints on neutrino mass in the scenario of vacuum energy interacting with cold dark matter after Planck 2018

In this work, we investigate the constraints on the total neutrino mass in the scenario of vacuum energy interacting with cold dark matter (abbreviated as I$Λ$CDM) by using the latest cosmological observations. We consider four typical interaction forms, i.e., $Q=βH ρ_{\rm de}$, $Q=βH ρ_{\rm c}$, $Q=βH_{0} ρ_{\rm de}$, and $Q=βH_{0} ρ_{\rm c}$, in the I$Λ$CDM scenario. To avoid the large-scale instability problem in interacting dark energy models, we employ the extended parameterized post-Friedmann method for interacting dark energy to calculate the perturbation evolution of dark energy in these models. The observational data used in this work include the cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements from the Planck 2018 data release, the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data, the type Ia supernovae (SN) observation (Pantheon compilation), and the 2019 local distance ladder measurement of the Hubble constant $H_{0}$ from the Hubble Space Telescope. We find that, compared with those in the $Λ$CDM+$\sum m_ν$ model, the constrains on $\sum m_ν$ are looser in the four I$Λ$CDM+$\sum m_ν$ models. When considering the three mass hierarchies of neutrinos, the constraints on $\sum m_ν$ are tightest in the degenerate hierarchy case and loosest in the inverted hierarchy case. In addition, in the four I$Λ$CDM+$\sum m_ν$ models, the values of coupling parameter $β$ are larger using the CMB+BAO+SN+$H_{0}$ data combination than that using the CMB+BAO+SN data combination, and $β>0$ is favored at more than 1$σ$ level when using CMB+BAO+SN+$H_{0}$ data combination. The issue of the $H_{0}$ tension is also discussed in this paper. We find that, compared with the $Λ$CDM+$\sum m_ν$ model, the $H_{0}$ tension can be alleviated in the I$Λ$CDM+$\sum m_ν$ model to some extent.

HF-UNet: Learning Hierarchically Inter-Task Relevance in Multi-Task U-Net for Accurate Prostate Segmentation

Accurate segmentation of the prostate is a key step in external beam radiation therapy treatments. In this paper, we tackle the challenging task of prostate segmentation in CT images by a two-stage network with 1) the first stage to fast localize, and 2) the second stage to accurately segment the prostate. To precisely segment the prostate in the second stage, we formulate prostate segmentation into a multi-task learning framework, which includes a main task to segment the prostate, and an auxiliary task to delineate the prostate boundary. Here, the second task is applied to provide additional guidance of unclear prostate boundary in CT images. Besides, the conventional multi-task deep networks typically share most of the parameters (i.e., feature representations) across all tasks, which may limit their data fitting ability, as the specificities of different tasks are inevitably ignored. By contrast, we solve them by a hierarchically-fused U-Net structure, namely HF-UNet. The HF-UNet has two complementary branches for two tasks, with the novel proposed attention-based task consistency learning block to communicate at each level between the two decoding branches. Therefore, HF-UNet endows the ability to learn hierarchically the shared representations for different tasks, and preserve the specificities of learned representations for different tasks simultaneously. We did extensive evaluations of the proposed method on a large planning CT image dataset, including images acquired from 339 patients. The experimental results show HF-UNet outperforms the conventional multi-task network architectures and the state-of-the-art methods.

A novel method of measuring cosmological distances using broad-line regions of quasars

The absolute distance scale measurements in cosmology have always been an important mission. In particular, in recent years, the Hubble constant tension between the measurements from early and late universe has become a new crisis for cosmology, which calls for new, independent absolute cosmological distance measurements. Recently, a result of measuring the parallax distance to 3C 273 through spectroastrometry and reverberation mapping was reported. We comment on this novel method in this News & Views paper.

Constraints on active and sterile neutrinos in an interacting dark energy cosmology

We investigate the impacts of dark energy on constraining massive (active/sterile) neutrinos in interacting dark energy (IDE) models by using the current observations. We employ two typical IDE models, the interacting $w$ cold dark matter (I$w$CDM) model and the interacting holographic dark energy (IHDE) model, to make an analysis. To avoid large-scale instability, we use the parameterized post-Friedmann approach to calculate the cosmological perturbations in the IDE models. The cosmological observational data used in this work include the Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies data, the baryon acoustic oscillation data, the type Ia supernovae data, the direct measurement of the Hubble constant, the weak lensing data, the redshift-space distortion data, and the CMB lensing data. We find that the dark energy properties could influence the constraint limits of active neutrino mass and sterile neutrino parameters in the IDE models. We also find that the dark energy properties could influence the constraints on the coupling strength parameter $β$, and a positive coupling constant, $β>0$, can be detected at the $2.5σ$ statistical significance for the IHDE+$ν_s$ model by using the all-data combination. In addition, we also discuss the "Hubble tension" issue in these scenarios. We find that the $H_0$ tension can be effectively relieved by considering massive sterile neutrinos, and in particular in the IHDE+$ν_s$ model the $H_0$ tension can be reduced to be at the $1.28σ$ level.

Blockchain for Future Smart Grid: A Comprehensive Survey

The concept of smart grid has been introduced as a new vision of the conventional power grid to figure out an efficient way of integrating green and renewable energy technologies. In this way, Internet-connected smart grid, also called energy Internet, is also emerging as an innovative approach to ensure the energy from anywhere at any time. The ultimate goal of these developments is to build a sustainable society. However, integrating and coordinating a large number of growing connections can be a challenging issue for the traditional centralized grid system. Consequently, the smart grid is undergoing a transformation to the decentralized topology from its centralized form. On the other hand, blockchain has some excellent features which make it a promising application for smart grid paradigm. In this paper, we aim to provide a comprehensive survey on application of blockchain in smart grid. As such, we identify the significant security challenges of smart grid scenarios that can be addressed by blockchain. Then, we present a number of blockchain-based recent research works presented in different literatures addressing security issues in the area of smart grid. We also summarize several related practical projects, trials, and products that have been emerged recently. Finally, we discuss essential research challenges and future directions of applying blockchain to smart grid security issues.

Inflation model selection revisited after a 1.91% measurement of the Hubble constant

The recent local measurement of the Hubble constant based on the distance-ladder method has reached a $1.91\%$ precision, but this result is in tension with the early-universe measurements at the more than 4$σ$ level, bringing a crisis to the contemporary cosmology. In addition to the end-to-end test of the $Λ$CDM model in the late universe, it is also of great interest to see how the local $H_0$ measurement affects the determination of the primordial power spectra, and further to test the influences for the inflation model selection. Here, we constrain the primordial power spectra of scalar and tensor perturbations by using a series of observational data, including the Planck 2015 cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization power spectra data, the Planck 2018 lensing power spectrum data, the BICEP2/Keck Array CMB B-mode data, and also the prior of optical depth $τ=0.054\pm0.007$, as well as the late-universe measurements (baryon acoustic oscillations and type Ia supernovae). In particular, we use the latest $1.91\%$ measurement of the Hubble constant, $H_{0}=74.03\pm1.42$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, in this cosmological test. We find that considering the latest local $H_{0}$ measurement in the data combination will lead to a larger fit value of $n_{\rm s}$. With the addition of the latest local measurement of $H_{0}$, it is found that the natural inflation model is totally excluded at the $2σ$ level, the Starobinsky $R^{2}$ inflation model is marginally favored at around the $2σ$ level, and the spontaneously broken SUSY inflation model is the most favored model.

Impacts of dark energy on constraining neutrino mass after Planck 2018

Considering the mass splittings of three active neutrinos, we investigate how the nature of dark energy affects the cosmological constraints on the total neutrino mass $\sum m_ν$ using the latest cosmological observations. In this paper, some typical dark energy models, including $Λ$CDM, $w$CDM, CPL, and HDE models, are discussed. In the analysis, we also consider the effects from the neutrino mass hierarchies, i.e., the degenerate hierarchy (DH), the normal hierarchy (NH), and the inverted hierarchy (IH). We employ the current cosmological observations to do the analysis, including the Planck 2018 temperature and polarization power spectra, the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO), the type Ia supernovae (SNe), and the Hubble constant $H_0$ measurement. In the $Λ$CDM+$\sum m_ν$ model, we obtain the upper limits of the neutrino mass $\sum m_ν< 0.123$ eV (DH), $\sum m_ν< 0.156$ eV (NH), and $\sum m_ν< 0.185$ eV (IH) at the $95\%$ C.L., using the Planck+BAO+SNe data combination. For the $w$CDM+$\sum m_ν$ model and the CPL+$\sum m_ν$ model, larger upper limits of $\sum m_ν$ are obtained compared to those of the $Λ$CDM+$\sum m_ν$ model. The most stringent constraint on the neutrino mass, $\sum m_ν<0.080$ eV (DH), is derived in the HDE+$\sum m_ν$ model. In addition, we find that the inclusion of the local measurement of the Hubble constant in the data combination leads to tighter constraints on the total neutrino mass in all these dark energy models.

Improving mobility of silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor devices for quantum dots by high vacuum activation annealing

To improve mobility of fabricated silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) quantum devices, forming gas annealing is a common method used to mitigate the effects of disorder at the Si/SiO2 interface. However, the importance of activation annealing is usually ignored. Here, we show that a high vacuum environment for implantation activation is beneficial for improving mobility compared to nitrogen atmosphere. Low-temperature transport measurements of Hall bars show that peak mobility can be improved by a factor of two, reaching 1.5 m^2/(Vs) using high vacuum annealing during implantation activation. Moreover, the charge stability diagram of a single quantum dot is mapped, with no visible disturbance caused by disorder, suggesting possibility of fabricating high-quality quantum dots on commercial wafers. Our results may provide valuable insights into device optimization in silicon-based quantum computing.

A new cosmological probe using super-massive black hole shadows

We study the prospects of using the low-redshift and high-redshift black hole shadows as new cosmological standard rulers for measuring cosmological parameters. We show that, using the low-redshift observation of the black hole shadow of M87$^\star$, the Hubble constant can be independently determined with a precision of about $13\%$ as $H_0=70\pm 9$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$. The high-redshift observations of super-massive black hole shadows may accurately determine a combination of parameters $H_0$ and ${Ω_{\rm m}}$, and we show by a simple simulation that combining them with the type Ia supernovae observations would give precise measurements of the cosmological parameters.

Forecast for weighing neutrinos in cosmology with SKA

We investigate what role the SKA neutral hydrogen (HI) intensity mapping (IM) sky survey observation will play in weighing neutrinos in cosmology. We use the simulated data of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements from the HI IM survey based on SKA1 and SKA2 to do the analysis. For the current observations, we use the Planck 2015 cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies observation, the optical BAO measurements, the type Ia supernovae (SN) observation (Pantheon compilation), and the latest $H_0$ measurement. We consider three mass ordering cases for massive neutrinos, i.e., the normal hierarchy (NH), inverted hierarchy (IH), and degenerate hierarchy (DH) cases. It is found that the SKA observation can significantly improve the constraints on $Ω_{\rm m}$ and $H_0$. Compared to the current observation, the SKA1 data can improve the constraints on $Ω_{\rm m}$ by about 33%, and on $H_0$ by about 36%; the SKA2 data can improve the constraints on $Ω_{\rm m}$ by about 58%, and on $H_0$ by about 66%. It is also found that the SKA observation can only slightly improve the constraints on $\sum m_ν$. Compared to the current observation, the SKA1 data can improve the constraints on $\sum m_ν$ by about 4%, 3%, and 10%, for the NH, IH, and DH cases, respectively; the SKA2 data can improve the constraints on $\sum m_ν$ by about 7%, 7%, and 16%, for the NH, IH, and DH cases, respectively.

Cosmological parameter measurement and neutral hydrogen 21 cm sky survey with the Square Kilometre Array

In order to precisely measure the cosmological parameters and answer the fundamental questions in cosmology, it is necessary to develop new, powerful cosmological probes, in addition to the proposed next-generation optical survey projects. The neutral hydrogen 21 cm sky surveys will provide a promising tool to study the late-universe evolution, helping shed light on the nature of dark energy. The Square Kilometre Array is the largest radio telescope in the world to be constructed in the near future, and it will push the 21 cm cosmology into a new era and greatly promote the development of cosmology in the forthcoming decades.

Private and Communication-Efficient Edge Learning: A Sparse Differential Gaussian-Masking Distributed SGD Approach

With rise of machine learning (ML) and the proliferation of smart mobile devices, recent years have witnessed a surge of interest in performing ML in wireless edge networks. In this paper, we consider the problem of jointly improving data privacy and communication efficiency of distributed edge learning, both of which are critical performance metrics in wireless edge network computing. Toward this end, we propose a new decentralized stochastic gradient method with sparse differential Gaussian-masked stochastic gradients (SDM-DSGD) for non-convex distributed edge learning. Our main contributions are three-fold: i) We theoretically establish the privacy and communication efficiency performance guarantee of our SDM-DSGD method, which outperforms all existing works; ii) We show that SDM-DSGD improves the fundamental training-privacy trade-off by {\em two orders of magnitude} compared with the state-of-the-art. iii) We reveal theoretical insights and offer practical design guidelines for the interactions between privacy preservation and communication efficiency, two conflicting performance goals. We conduct extensive experiments with a variety of learning models on MNIST and CIFAR-10 datasets to verify our theoretical findings. Collectively, our results contribute to the theory and algorithm design for distributed edge learning.

Forecast for cosmological parameter estimation with gravitational-wave standard siren observation from the Cosmic Explorer

The third-generation ground-based gravitational-wave (GW) detector, Cosmic Explorer (CE), is scheduled to start its observation in the 2030s. In this paper, we make a forecast for cosmological parameter estimation with gravitational-wave standard siren observation from the CE. We use the simulated GW standard siren data of CE to constrain the $Λ$CDM, $w$CDM and CPL models. We combine the simulated GW data with the current cosmological electromagnetic observations including the latest cosmic microwave background anisotropies data from Planck, the optical baryon acoustic oscillation measurements, and the type Ia supernovae observation (Pantheon compilation) to do the analysis. We find that the future standard siren observation from CE will improve the cosmological parameter estimation to a great extent, since the future GW standard siren data can well break the degeneracies generated by the optical observations between various cosmological parameters. We also find that the CE's constraining capability on the cosmological parameters is slightly better than that of the same-type GW detector, the Einstein Telescope. In addition, the synergy between the GW standard siren observation from CE and the 21 cm emission observation from SKA is also discussed.

Real-time cosmology with SKA

In this work, we investigate what role the redshift drift data of Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will play in the cosmological parameter estimation in the future. To test the constraint capability of the redshift drift data of SKA-only, the $Λ$CDM model is chosen as a reference model. We find that using the SKA1 mock data, the $Λ$CDM model can be loosely constrained, while the model can be well constrained when the SKA2 mock data are used. When the mock data of SKA are combined with the data of the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), the constraints can be significantly improved almost as good as the data combination of the type Ia supernovae observation (SN), the cosmic microwave background observation (CMB), and the baryon acoustic oscillations observation (BAO). Furthermore, we explore the impact of the redshift drift data of SKA on the basis of SN+CMB+BAO+E-ELT in the $Λ$CDM model, the $w$CDM model, the CPL model, and the HDE model. We find that the redshift drift measurement of SKA could help to significantly improve the constraints on dark energy and could break the degeneracy between the cosmological parameters. Therefore, we conclude that redshift-drift observation of SKA would provide a good improvement in the cosmological parameter estimation in the future and has the enormous potential to be one of the most competitive cosmological probes in constraining dark energy.
