Single Image Dehazing with An Independent Detail-Recovery Network

Single image dehazing is a prerequisite which affects the performance of many computer vision tasks and has attracted increasing attention in recent years. However, most existing dehazing methods emphasize more on haze removal but less on the detail recovery of the dehazed images. In this paper, we propose a single image dehazing method with an independent Detail Recovery Network (DRN), which considers capturing the details from the input image over a separate network and then integrates them into a coarse dehazed image. The overall network consists of two independent networks, named DRN and the dehazing network respectively. Specifically, the DRN aims to recover the dehazed image details through local and global branches respectively. The local branch can obtain local detail information through the convolution layer and the global branch can capture more global information by the Smooth Dilated Convolution (SDC). The detail feature map is fused into the coarse dehazed image to obtain the dehazed image with rich image details. Besides, we integrate the DRN, the physical-model-based dehazing network and the reconstruction loss into an end-to-end joint learning framework. Extensive experiments on the public image dehazing datasets (RESIDE-Indoor, RESIDE-Outdoor and the TrainA-TestA) illustrate the effectiveness of the modules in the proposed method and show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art dehazing methods both quantitatively and qualitatively. The code is released in https://github.com/YanLi-LY/Dehazing-DRN.

Stimuli-Aware Visual Emotion Analysis

Visual emotion analysis (VEA) has attracted great attention recently, due to the increasing tendency of expressing and understanding emotions through images on social networks. Different from traditional vision tasks, VEA is inherently more challenging since it involves a much higher level of complexity and ambiguity in human cognitive process. Most of the existing methods adopt deep learning techniques to extract general features from the whole image, disregarding the specific features evoked by various emotional stimuli. Inspired by the \textit{Stimuli-Organism-Response (S-O-R)} emotion model in psychological theory, we proposed a stimuli-aware VEA method consisting of three stages, namely stimuli selection (S), feature extraction (O) and emotion prediction (R). First, specific emotional stimuli (i.e., color, object, face) are selected from images by employing the off-the-shelf tools. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to introduce stimuli selection process into VEA in an end-to-end network. Then, we design three specific networks, i.e., Global-Net, Semantic-Net and Expression-Net, to extract distinct emotional features from different stimuli simultaneously. Finally, benefiting from the inherent structure of Mikel's wheel, we design a novel hierarchical cross-entropy loss to distinguish hard false examples from easy ones in an emotion-specific manner. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed method consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches on four public visual emotion datasets. Ablation study and visualizations further prove the validity and interpretability of our method.

Support-Set Based Cross-Supervision for Video Grounding

Current approaches for video grounding propose kinds of complex architectures to capture the video-text relations, and have achieved impressive improvements. However, it is hard to learn the complicated multi-modal relations by only architecture designing in fact. In this paper, we introduce a novel Support-set Based Cross-Supervision (Sscs) module which can improve existing methods during training phase without extra inference cost. The proposed Sscs module contains two main components, i.e., discriminative contrastive objective and generative caption objective. The contrastive objective aims to learn effective representations by contrastive learning, while the caption objective can train a powerful video encoder supervised by texts. Due to the co-existence of some visual entities in both ground-truth and background intervals, i.e., mutual exclusion, naively contrastive learning is unsuitable to video grounding. We address the problem by boosting the cross-supervision with the support-set concept, which collects visual information from the whole video and eliminates the mutual exclusion of entities. Combined with the original objectives, Sscs can enhance the abilities of multi-modal relation modeling for existing approaches. We extensively evaluate Sscs on three challenging datasets, and show that our method can improve current state-of-the-art methods by large margins, especially 6.35% in terms of R1@0.5 on Charades-STA.

Multiple Graph Learning for Scalable Multi-view Clustering

Graph-based multi-view clustering has become an active topic due to the efficiency in characterizing both the complex structure and relationship between multimedia data. However, existing methods have the following shortcomings: (1) They are inefficient or even fail for graph learning in large scale due to the graph construction and eigen-decomposition. (2) They cannot well exploit both the complementary information and spatial structure embedded in graphs of different views. To well exploit complementary information and tackle the scalability issue plaguing graph-based multi-view clustering, we propose an efficient multiple graph learning model via a small number of anchor points and tensor Schatten p-norm minimization. Specifically, we construct a hidden and tractable large graph by anchor graph for each view and well exploit complementary information embedded in anchor graphs of different views by tensor Schatten p-norm regularizer. Finally, we develop an efficient algorithm, which scales linearly with the data size, to solve our proposed model. Extensive experimental results on several datasets indicate that our proposed method outperforms some state-of-the-art multi-view clustering algorithms.

A Circular-Structured Representation for Visual Emotion Distribution Learning

Visual Emotion Analysis (VEA) has attracted increasing attention recently with the prevalence of sharing images on social networks. Since human emotions are ambiguous and subjective, it is more reasonable to address VEA in a label distribution learning (LDL) paradigm rather than a single-label classification task. Different from other LDL tasks, there exist intrinsic relationships between emotions and unique characteristics within them, as demonstrated in psychological theories. Inspired by this, we propose a well-grounded circular-structured representation to utilize the prior knowledge for visual emotion distribution learning. To be specific, we first construct an Emotion Circle to unify any emotional state within it. On the proposed Emotion Circle, each emotion distribution is represented with an emotion vector, which is defined with three attributes (i.e., emotion polarity, emotion type, emotion intensity) as well as two properties (i.e., similarity, additivity). Besides, we design a novel Progressive Circular (PC) loss to penalize the dissimilarities between predicted emotion vector and labeled one in a coarse-to-fine manner, which further boosts the learning process in an emotion-specific way. Extensive experiments and comparisons are conducted on public visual emotion distribution datasets, and the results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

Towards Defending against Adversarial Examples via Attack-Invariant Features

Deep neural networks (DNNs) are vulnerable to adversarial noise. Their adversarial robustness can be improved by exploiting adversarial examples. However, given the continuously evolving attacks, models trained on seen types of adversarial examples generally cannot generalize well to unseen types of adversarial examples. To solve this problem, in this paper, we propose to remove adversarial noise by learning generalizable invariant features across attacks which maintain semantic classification information. Specifically, we introduce an adversarial feature learning mechanism to disentangle invariant features from adversarial noise. A normalization term has been proposed in the encoded space of the attack-invariant features to address the bias issue between the seen and unseen types of attacks. Empirical evaluations demonstrate that our method could provide better protection in comparison to previous state-of-the-art approaches, especially against unseen types of attacks and adaptive attacks.

Real-Time Video Super-Resolution on Smartphones with Deep Learning, Mobile AI 2021 Challenge: Report

Video super-resolution has recently become one of the most important mobile-related problems due to the rise of video communication and streaming services. While many solutions have been proposed for this task, the majority of them are too computationally expensive to run on portable devices with limited hardware resources. To address this problem, we introduce the first Mobile AI challenge, where the target is to develop an end-to-end deep learning-based video super-resolution solutions that can achieve a real-time performance on mobile GPUs. The participants were provided with the REDS dataset and trained their models to do an efficient 4X video upscaling. The runtime of all models was evaluated on the OPPO Find X2 smartphone with the Snapdragon 865 SoC capable of accelerating floating-point networks on its Adreno GPU. The proposed solutions are fully compatible with any mobile GPU and can upscale videos to HD resolution at up to 80 FPS while demonstrating high fidelity results. A detailed description of all models developed in the challenge is provided in this paper.

Removing Adversarial Noise in Class Activation Feature Space

Deep neural networks (DNNs) are vulnerable to adversarial noise. Preprocessing based defenses could largely remove adversarial noise by processing inputs. However, they are typically affected by the error amplification effect, especially in the front of continuously evolving attacks. To solve this problem, in this paper, we propose to remove adversarial noise by implementing a self-supervised adversarial training mechanism in a class activation feature space. To be specific, we first maximize the disruptions to class activation features of natural examples to craft adversarial examples. Then, we train a denoising model to minimize the distances between the adversarial examples and the natural examples in the class activation feature space. Empirical evaluations demonstrate that our method could significantly enhance adversarial robustness in comparison to previous state-of-the-art approaches, especially against unseen adversarial attacks and adaptive attacks.

Drafting and Revision: Laplacian Pyramid Network for Fast High-Quality Artistic Style Transfer

Artistic style transfer aims at migrating the style from an example image to a content image. Currently, optimization-based methods have achieved great stylization quality, but expensive time cost restricts their practical applications. Meanwhile, feed-forward methods still fail to synthesize complex style, especially when holistic global and local patterns exist. Inspired by the common painting process of drawing a draft and revising the details, we introduce a novel feed-forward method named Laplacian Pyramid Network (LapStyle). LapStyle first transfers global style patterns in low-resolution via a Drafting Network. It then revises the local details in high-resolution via a Revision Network, which hallucinates a residual image according to the draft and the image textures extracted by Laplacian filtering. Higher resolution details can be easily generated by stacking Revision Networks with multiple Laplacian pyramid levels. The final stylized image is obtained by aggregating outputs of all pyramid levels. %We also introduce a patch discriminator to better learn local patterns adversarially. Experiments demonstrate that our method can synthesize high quality stylized images in real time, where holistic style patterns are properly transferred.

TSGCNet: Discriminative Geometric Feature Learning with Two-Stream GraphConvolutional Network for 3D Dental Model Segmentation

The ability to segment teeth precisely from digitized 3D dental models is an essential task in computer-aided orthodontic surgical planning. To date, deep learning based methods have been popularly used to handle this task. State-of-the-art methods directly concatenate the raw attributes of 3D inputs, namely coordinates and normal vectors of mesh cells, to train a single-stream network for fully-automated tooth segmentation. This, however, has the drawback of ignoring the different geometric meanings provided by those raw attributes. This issue might possibly confuse the network in learning discriminative geometric features and result in many isolated false predictions on the dental model. Against this issue, we propose a two-stream graph convolutional network (TSGCNet) to learn multi-view geometric information from different geometric attributes. Our TSGCNet adopts two graph-learning streams, designed in an input-aware fashion, to extract more discriminative high-level geometric representations from coordinates and normal vectors, respectively. These feature representations learned from the designed two different streams are further fused to integrate the multi-view complementary information for the cell-wise dense prediction task. We evaluate our proposed TSGCNet on a real-patient dataset of dental models acquired by 3D intraoral scanners, and experimental results demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods for 3D shape segmentation.

Transfer Adaptation Learning: A Decade Survey

The world we see is ever-changing and it always changes with people, things, and the environment. Domain is referred to as the state of the world at a certain moment. A research problem is characterized as transfer adaptation learning (TAL) when it needs knowledge correspondence between different moments/domains. Conventional machine learning aims to find a model with the minimum expected risk on test data by minimizing the regularized empirical risk on the training data, which, however, supposes that the training and test data share similar joint probability distribution. TAL aims to build models that can perform tasks of target domain by learning knowledge from a semantic related but distribution different source domain. It is an energetic research filed of increasing influence and importance, which is presenting a blowout publication trend. This paper surveys the advances of TAL methodologies in the past decade, and the technical challenges and essential problems of TAL have been observed and discussed with deep insights and new perspectives. Broader solutions of transfer adaptation learning being created by researchers are identified, i.e., instance re-weighting adaptation, feature adaptation, classifier adaptation, deep network adaptation and adversarial adaptation, which are beyond the early semi-supervised and unsupervised split. The survey helps researchers rapidly but comprehensively understand and identify the research foundation, research status, theoretical limitations, future challenges and under-studied issues (universality, interpretability, and credibility) to be broken in the field toward universal representation and safe applications in open-world scenarios.

LRA: an accelerated rough set framework based on local redundancy of attribute for feature selection

In this paper, we propose and prove the theorem regarding the stability of attributes in a decision system. Based on the theorem, we propose the LRA framework for accelerating rough set algorithms. It is a general-purpose framework which can be applied to almost all rough set methods significantly . Theoretical analysis guarantees high efficiency. Note that the enhancement of efficiency will not lead to any decrease of the classification accuracy. Besides, we provide a simpler prove for the positive approximation acceleration framework.

Image Fine-grained Inpainting

Image inpainting techniques have shown promising improvement with the assistance of generative adversarial networks (GANs) recently. However, most of them often suffered from completed results with unreasonable structure or blurriness. To mitigate this problem, in this paper, we present a one-stage model that utilizes dense combinations of dilated convolutions to obtain larger and more effective receptive fields. Benefited from the property of this network, we can more easily recover large regions in an incomplete image. To better train this efficient generator, except for frequently-used VGG feature matching loss, we design a novel self-guided regression loss for concentrating on uncertain areas and enhancing the semantic details. Besides, we devise a geometrical alignment constraint item to compensate for the pixel-based distance between prediction features and ground-truth ones. We also employ a discriminator with local and global branches to ensure local-global contents consistency. To further improve the quality of generated images, discriminator feature matching on the local branch is introduced, which dynamically minimizes the similarity of intermediate features between synthetic and ground-truth patches. Extensive experiments on several public datasets demonstrate that our approach outperforms current state-of-the-art methods. Code is available at https://github.com/Zheng222/DMFN.

Interpretable Detail-Fidelity Attention Network for Single Image Super-Resolution

Benefiting from the strong capabilities of deep CNNs for feature representation and nonlinear mapping, deep-learning-based methods have achieved excellent performance in single image super-resolution. However, most existing SR methods depend on the high capacity of networks which is initially designed for visual recognition, and rarely consider the initial intention of super-resolution for detail fidelity. Aiming at pursuing this intention, there are two challenging issues to be solved: (1) learning appropriate operators which is adaptive to the diverse characteristics of smoothes and details; (2) improving the ability of model to preserve the low-frequency smoothes and reconstruct the high-frequency details. To solve them, we propose a purposeful and interpretable detail-fidelity attention network to progressively process these smoothes and details in divide-and-conquer manner, which is a novel and specific prospect of image super-resolution for the purpose on improving the detail fidelity, instead of blindly designing or employing the deep CNNs architectures for merely feature representation in local receptive fields. Particularly, we propose a Hessian filtering for interpretable feature representation which is high-profile for detail inference, a dilated encoder-decoder and a distribution alignment cell to improve the inferred Hessian features in morphological manner and statistical manner respectively. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed methods achieve superior performances over the state-of-the-art methods quantitatively and qualitatively. An Attention-Guided Deep Regression Model for Landmark Detection in Cephalograms

Cephalometric tracing method is usually used in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. In this paper, we propose a deep learning based framework to automatically detect anatomical landmarks in cephalometric X-ray images. We train the deep encoder-decoder for landmark detection, and combine global landmark configuration with local high-resolution feature responses. The proposed frame-work is based on 2-stage u-net, regressing the multi-channel heatmaps for land-mark detection. In this framework, we embed attention mechanism with global stage heatmaps, guiding the local stage inferring, to regress the local heatmap patches in a high resolution. Besides, the Expansive Exploration strategy improves robustness while inferring, expanding the searching scope without increasing model complexity. We have evaluated our framework in the most widely-used public dataset of landmark detection in cephalometric X-ray images. With less computation and manually tuning, our framework achieves state-of-the-art results.

Robust Person Re-Identification through Contextual Mutual Boosting

Person Re-Identification (Re-ID) has witnessed great advance, driven by the development of deep learning. However, modern person Re-ID is still challenged by background clutter, occlusion and large posture variation which are common in practice. Previous methods tackle these challenges by localizing pedestrians through external cues (e.g., pose estimation, human parsing) or attention mechanism, suffering from high computation cost and increased model complexity. In this paper, we propose the Contextual Mutual Boosting Network (CMBN). It localizes pedestrians and recalibrates features by effectively exploiting contextual information and statistical inference. Firstly, we construct two branches with a shared convolutional frontend to learn the foreground and background features respectively. By enabling interaction between these two branches, they boost the accuracy of the spatial localization mutually. Secondly, starting from a statistical perspective, we propose the Mask Generator that exploits the activation distribution of the transformation matrix for generating the static channel mask to the representations. The mask recalibrates the features to amplify the valuable characteristics and diminish the noise. Finally, we propose the Contextual-Detachment Strategy to optimize the two branches jointly and independently, which further enhances the localization precision. Experiments on the benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of the architecture compared the state-of-the-art.

Progressive Perception-Oriented Network for Single Image Super-Resolution

Recently, it has been demonstrated that deep neural networks can significantly improve the performance of single image super-resolution (SISR). Numerous studies have concentrated on raising the quantitative quality of super-resolved (SR) images. However, these methods that target PSNR maximization usually produce blurred images at large upscaling factor. The introduction of generative adversarial networks (GANs) can mitigate this issue and show impressive results with synthetic high-frequency textures. Nevertheless, these GAN-based approaches always have a tendency to add fake textures and even artifacts to make the SR image of visually higher-resolution. In this paper, we propose a novel perceptual image super-resolution method that progressively generates visually high-quality results by constructing a stage-wise network. Specifically, the first phase concentrates on minimizing pixel-wise error, and the second stage utilizes the features extracted by the previous stage to pursue results with better structural retention. The final stage employs fine structure features distilled by the second phase to produce more realistic results. In this way, we can maintain the pixel, and structural level information in the perceptual image as much as possible. It is useful to note that the proposed method can build three types of images in a feed-forward process. Also, we explore a new generator that adopts multi-scale hierarchical features fusion. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets show that our approach is superior to the state-of-the-art methods. Code is available at https://github.com/Zheng222/PPON.
