Constraints on a Long-Lived X17 Vector Boson with FASER

The ATOMKI anomalies motivate the possibility of a new particle, the X17, with a mass of 17 MeV and weak couplings to nuclei and electrons. Such a particle may be produced at the LHC, travel 480 m in the far-forward direction, and decay to $e^+e^-$ in FASER. In this paper, previous FASER searches for dark photons and axion-like particles (ALPs) are combined and interpreted as searches for a candidate X17 particle, the protophobic vector boson. The searches use data collected from $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13.6$ TeV in LHC Run 3 from 2022 for the dark photon search and from 2022-2023 for the ALP search. No excess events are found above the expected background, and the combined null results exclude a previously-unconstrained "low-coupling window" with electron coupling $6 \times 10^{-5} < ε_e < 1.2 \times 10^{-4}$. A "high-coupling window" remains.

Recovery of a source of anomalous diffusion from space-time sparse data

We study an inverse source problem for a time-fractional sub- and super-diffusive anomalous diffusion equation on the unit disk with sparse boundary observations. We prove the recovery of a general class of $L^2$ sources for anomalous diffusion, with separated variables, from boundary measurements that are sparse in both space and time, using observations at two carefully chosen boundary points on a discrete set of times arbitrarily close to the final time. The analysis relies heavily on the memory effect of the model, properties of complex analysis and the representation of solutions.

Long time dynamics for complex Ginzburg-Landau equations on three-dimensional Riemannian manifolds

We study the energy-subcritical and energy-critical complex Ginzburg-Landau equations on three-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. We establish the asymptotic behavior of solutions via a purely energy-based approach and subsequently prove a fast/slow dichotomy of the solutions. Moreover, for the slow solution, we show that the solution converges to an explicit asymptotic profile. In particular, we obtain a precise description of both the amplitude and the phase of the leading-order dynamics. As a by-product, the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation approximation yields global weak solutions to the energy-subcritical and energy-critical defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations on compact three-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. We also investigate the long time behavior of the solutions to the energy-subcritical and energy-critical complex Ginzburg-Landau equations on a class of complete noncompact three-dimensional Riemannian manifolds and prove decay of global solutions under suitable geometric assumptions.

Electromagnetic Shower Reconstruction and Identification in FASER's Emulsion Detector for LHC Forward Neutrino Measurements

We present methods for electromagnetic shower reconstruction and identification in the FASERnu emulsion detector using 100 GeV and 200 GeV electron test-beam data from the CERN SPS H4 beamline. The reconstruction employs a clustering-based algorithm without energy-dependent tuning to determine shower axes. A multi-level identification chain comprising track pre-selection, a cut-based selection, and a BDT classifier achieves combined background rejection rates of 99.99% (100 GeV) and 99.94% (200 GeV). The method reaches total reconstruction and identification efficiencies of 58.9% (100 GeV) and 70.8% (200 GeV) evaluated from simulated samples. Energy reconstruction using the total number of reconstructed segments as the calorimetric estimator yields relative biases of +0.6% (100 GeV) and -0.8% (200 GeV), with resolutions of 25.4% and 22.6%, respectively. Systematic uncertainties on the energy reconstruction are dominated by variations in emulsion film detection efficiency, with totals of (+10.9%/-8.2%) at 100 GeV and (+10.3%/-6.9%) at 200 GeV. The methodology provides a validated framework for electron neutrino identification with the FASERnu detector at the LHC.

Momentum Measurement of Charged Particles in FASER's Emulsion Detector at the LHC

We present a momentum measurement method based on multiple Coulomb scattering (MCS) in the FASER$ν$ emulsion detector. The measurement of charged-particle momenta is essential for studying neutrino interactions in the TeV energy range at the FASER experiment. This method exploits the sub-micron spatial resolution and long tracking length of the FASER$ν$ detector, enabling momentum determination from a few GeV up to a few TeV. The performance was evaluated using Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulations and validated with muon test beam data in the momentum range 100-300 GeV. As a first probe of the method for higher momentum muons, background muons recorded by the FASER$ν$ detector were examined, showing reconstructed momenta consistent with expectations from their angular spread.

Global weak solution of 3-D focusing energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation

In this article, we prove the existence of global weak solutions to the three-dimensional focusing energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation in the non-radial case. Furthermore, we prove the weak-strong uniqueness for some class of initial data. The main ingredient of our new approach is to use solutions of an energy-critical Ginzburg-Landau equation as approximations for the corresponding nonlinear Schördinger equation. In our proofs, we first show the dichotomy of global well-posedness versus finite time blow-up of energy-critical Ginzburg-Landau equation in $\dot{H}^1( \mathbb{R}^d)$ for $d = 3,4 $ when the energy is less than the energy of the stationary solution $W$. We follow the strategy of C. E. Kenig and F. Merle [25,26], using a concentration-compactness/rigidity argument to reduce the global well-posedness to the exclusion of a critical element. The critical element is ruled out by dissipation of the Ginzburg-Landau equation, including local smoothness, backwards uniqueness and unique continuation. The existence of global weak solution of the three dimensional focusing energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the non-radial case then follows from the global well-posedness of the energy-critical Ginzburg-Landau equation via a limitation argument. We also adapt the arguments of M. Struwe [37,38] to prove the weak-strong uniqueness when the $\dot{H}^1$-norm of the initial data is bounded by a constant depending on the stationary solution $W$.

Experimental Review of the Quarkonium Physics at the LHC

We review recent heavy quarkonium measurements in $pp$, $p\mathrm{Pb}$, and $\mathrm{PbPb}$ collisions at the LHC by the ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb collaborations using Run 2 and early Run 3 data. Production studies include present differential cross sections and polarization measurements of charmonium and bottomonium, providing precise tests of QCD theoretical calculations and unveiling symmetry relations among spin and orbital configurations. Notably, a $t\bar{t}$ quasi bound state has been observed at the LHC recently. Suppression analyses quantify the sequential melting of bottomonium states in $\mathrm{PbPb}$ collisions, serving as a probe of the deconfined quark gluon plasma. Cold nuclear matter effects are constrained through comparisons of quarkonium yields in $p\mathrm{Pb}$ and $pp$ collisions. Furthermore, multi quarkonium investigations observe di and tri quarkonium production processes and resonances, exploring multi parton interactions and the symmetry structure underlying exotic hadron states.

On the convergence of PINNs for inverse source problem in the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation

This paper addresses the problem of recovering the spatial profile of the source in the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation from regional observation data at fixed times. We establish two types of sufficient measurements for the unique solvability of the inverse problem. The first is to determine the source term by using whole data at one fixed instant. Conditional stability is established by using the eigenfunction expansion argument. Next, using the analytic continuation method, both uniqueness and a stability estimate for recovering the unknown source can be established from local data at two instants. Finally, algorithms based on the physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) are proposed, and several numerical experiments are presented to show the accuracy and efficiency of the algorithm.

Classification of the minimal-mass blowup solutions to the two dimensional focusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger system

In this article, we study the two dimensional focusing finitely and infinitely coupled cubic nonlinear Schrödinger system when the mass is equal to the scattering threshold. For the focusing finitely coupled cubic nonlinear Schrödinger system, we present a complete classification of minimal-mass blowup solutions. Specifically, we demonstrate that all such solutions must be either solitons or their pseudo-conformal transformations. To prove this result, we develop a modulation analysis that accounts for multi-component interactions to overcome the multiply phase transformations caused by the multi-component. A long time Strichartz estimate for vector-valued solutions is established to solve the difficulty posed by the Galilean transformations and spatial translation, where a new vector-valued bilinear estimate is proven to address the challenges caused by the coupled nonlinear interaction. For the infinitely coupled focusing nonlinear Schrödinger system when the mass is equal or slightly above the scattering threshold in \cite{CGHY}, we show that scattering is the only dynamical behavior of the solutions to the infinitely coupled system.

Expanding solutions near unstable Lane-Emden stars

We consider the compressible Euler-Poisson equations for polytropes $P(ρ)=Kρ^γ$ with $γ\in \left(\frac{6}{5},\frac{4}{3} \right]$ and the white dwarf stars. For $γ=\frac{4}{3},$ we establish the existence of a global weak solution for the spherically symmetric initial data with mass less than the mass of the Lane-Emden stars (i.e. non-rotating polytropes). For $γ\in \left(\frac{6}{5},\frac{4}{3} \right)$, we show the existence of global weak solution for spherical symmetric initial data in an invariant set containing a neighborhood of Lane-Emden stars. Moreover, the support of these solution expands to infinity. As a corollary, this proves the strong instability of the Lane-Emden stars for $γ\in \left( \frac{6}{5},\frac{4}{3}\right] $. For $γ\in \left(\frac{6}{5},\frac{4}{3} \right),$ our results provide the first example of expanding solutions near the Lane-Emden stars. For white dwarf stars, we prove that the solution cannot collapse if the mass of initial data is less than the Chandrasekhar limit mass, which is the supremum of the mass of the non-rotating white dwarf stars. Our proof strongly uses the variational characterization of the Lane-Emden stars. First, we relate the best constant of a Hardy-Littlewood type inequality with the mass of the Lane-Emden stars with $γ=\frac{4}{3}$, which is further shown to equal the Chandrasekhar limit mass. For $γ\in\left( \frac{6}{5},\frac{4}{3}\right) $, we show that the Lane-Emden stars are minimizers of an energy-mass functional subject to a Pohozaev type constraint. This is crucial in the construction of the invariant set of expanding solutions.

Global well-posedness of the energy-critical complex Ginzburg-Landau equation in exterior domains

In this article, we consider an energy-critical complex Ginzburg-Landau equation in the exterior of a smooth compact strictly convex obstacle. We prove the global well-posedness of energy-critical complex Ginzburg-Landau equation in an exterior domain by the concentration-compactness/rigidity theorem method. As corollaries of our main result, we establish both the existence of global weak solutions to energy-critical defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations and the global well-posedness theory for energy-critical semi-linear heat equation in exterior domains.

Remark on the scattering theory of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the cylinders

In this article, we consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the cylinder $\mathbb{R}^d\times \mathbb{T}$. In the long range case, we show there is no linear scattering state of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb{R}^d \times \mathbb{T}$. In the short range case, we show the decay and scattering of solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb{R}^d \times \mathbb{T}$ for small data.

Stability of Navier-Stokes equations with a free surface

We consider the viscous incompressible fluids in a three-dimensional horizontally periodic domain bounded below by a fixed smooth boundary and above by a free moving surface. The fluid dynamics are governed by the Navier-Stokes equations with the effect of gravity and surface tension on the free surface. We develop a global well-posedness theory by a nonlinear energy method in low regular Sobolev spaces with several techniques, including: the horizontal energy-dissipation estimates, a new tripled bootstrap argument inspired by Guo and Tice [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal.(2018)]. Moreover, the solution decays asymptotically to the equilibrium in an exponential rate.

Generation-Guided Multi-Level Unified Network for Video Grounding

Video grounding aims to locate the timestamps best matching the query description within an untrimmed video. Prevalent methods can be divided into moment-level and clip-level frameworks. Moment-level approaches directly predict the probability of each transient moment to be the boundary in a global perspective, and they usually perform better in coarse grounding. On the other hand, clip-level ones aggregate the moments in different time windows into proposals and then deduce the most similar one, leading to its advantage in fine-grained grounding. In this paper, we propose a multi-level unified framework to enhance performance by leveraging the merits of both moment-level and clip-level methods. Moreover, a novel generation-guided paradigm in both levels is adopted. It introduces a multi-modal generator to produce the implicit boundary feature and clip feature, later regarded as queries to calculate the boundary scores by a discriminator. The generation-guided solution enhances video grounding from a two-unique-modals' match task to a cross-modal attention task, which steps out of the previous framework and obtains notable gains. The proposed Generation-guided Multi-level Unified network (GMU) surpasses previous methods and reaches State-Of-The-Art on various benchmarks with disparate features, e.g., Charades-STA, ActivityNet captions.

Scattering for the mass-critical nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations in three and higher dimensions

In this paper we consider the real-valued mass-critical nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations in three and higher dimensions. We prove the dichotomy between scattering and blow-up below the ground state energy in the focusing case, and the energy scattering in the defocusing case. We use the concentration-compactness/rigidity method as R. Killip, B. Stovall, and M. Visan [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 364 (2012)]. The main new novelty is to approximate the large scale (low-frequency) profile by the solution of the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation when the nonlinearity is not algebraic.

Global well-posedness and scattering of the two dimensional cubic focusing nonlinear Schrödinger system

In this article, we prove the global well-posedness and scattering of the cubic focusing infinite coupled nonlinear Schrödinger system on $\mathbb{R}^2$ below the threshold in $L_x^2h^1(\mathbb{R}^2\times \mathbb{Z})$. We first establish the variational characterization of the ground state, and derive the threshold of the global well-posedness and scattering. Then we show the global well-posedness and scattering below the threshold by the concentration-compactness/rigidity method, where the almost periodic solution is excluded by adapting the argument in the proof of the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equations by B. Dodson. As a byproduct of the scattering of the cubic focusing infinite coupled nonlinear Schödinger system, we obtain the scattering of the cubic focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the small cylinder, this is the first large data scattering result of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations on the cylinders. In the article, we also show the global well-posedness and scattering of the two dimensional $N-$coupled focusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger system in $\left(L^2(\mathbb{R}^2) \right)^N$.

SimViT: Exploring a Simple Vision Transformer with sliding windows

Although vision Transformers have achieved excellent performance as backbone models in many vision tasks, most of them intend to capture global relations of all tokens in an image or a window, which disrupts the inherent spatial and local correlations between patches in 2D structure. In this paper, we introduce a simple vision Transformer named SimViT, to incorporate spatial structure and local information into the vision Transformers. Specifically, we introduce Multi-head Central Self-Attention(MCSA) instead of conventional Multi-head Self-Attention to capture highly local relations. The introduction of sliding windows facilitates the capture of spatial structure. Meanwhile, SimViT extracts multi-scale hierarchical features from different layers for dense prediction tasks. Extensive experiments show the SimViT is effective and efficient as a general-purpose backbone model for various image processing tasks. Especially, our SimViT-Micro only needs 3.3M parameters to achieve 71.1% top-1 accuracy on ImageNet-1k dataset, which is the smallest size vision Transformer model by now. Our code will be available in https://github.com/ucasligang/SimViT.
