Lorentz Angle Measurement for CO2/Isobutane Gas Mixtures

We have developed a Lorentz angle measurement system for cool gas mixtures in the course of our R&D for a proposed JLC central drift chamber (JLC-CDC). The measurement system is characterized by the use of two laser beams to produce primary electrons and flash ADCs to read their signals simultaneously. With this new system, we have measured Lorentz angles for CO2/isobutane gas mixtures with different proportions (95:5, 90:10, and 85:15), varying drift field from 0.6 to 2.0 kV/cm and magnetic field up to 1.5 T. The results of the measurement are in good agreement with GARFIELD/MAGBOLTZ simulations.

Coherent control of macroscopic quantum states in a single-Cooper-pair box

A small superconducting electrode (a single-Cooper-pair box) connected to a reservoir via a Josephson junction constitutes an artificial two-level system, in which two charge states that differ by 2e are coupled by tunneling of Cooper pairs. Despite its macroscopic nature involving a large number of electrons, the two-level system shows coherent superposition of the two charge states, and has been suggested as a candidate for a qubit, i.e. a basic component of a quantum computer. Here we report on time-domain observation of the coherent quantum-state evolution in the two-level system by applying a short voltage pulse that modifies the energies of the two levels nonadiabatically to control the coherent evolution. The resulting state was probed by a tunneling current through an additional probe junction. Our results demonstrate coherent operation and measurement of a quantum state of a single two-level system, i.e. a qubit, in a solid-state electronic device.

Singularity-matching peaks in superconducting single-electron transistor

We report the experimental observation of the recently predicted peaks on the I-V curve of the superconducting single-electron transistor at relatively high temperatures. The peaks are due to the matching of singularities in the quasiparticle density of states in two electrodes of a tunnel junction. The energy shift due to Coulomb blockade provides the matching at finite voltage.

Coexistence of, and Competition between, Superconductivity and Charge-Stripe Order in La(1.6-x)Nd(0.4)Sr(x)CuO(4)

Previously we have presented evidence for stripe order of holes and spins in La(1.6-x)Nd(0.4)Sr(x)CuO(4) with x=0.12. Here we show, via neutron diffraction measurements of magnetic scattering, that similar order occurs in crystals with x=0.15 and 0.20. Zero-field-cooled magnetization measurements show that all 3 compositions are also superconducting, with the superconducting transition temperature increasing as the low-temperature staggered magnetization decreases.

Nature of Phase Transitions of Superconducting Wire Networks in a Magnetic Field

We study $I$-$V$ characteristics of periodic square Nb wire networks as a function of temperature in a transverse magnetic field, with a focus on three fillings 2/5, 1/2, and 0.618 that represent very different levels of incommensurability. For all three fillings, a scaling behavior of $I$-$V$ characteristics is found, suggesting a finite temperature continuous superconducting phase transition. The low-temperature $I$-$V$ characteristics are found to have an exponential form, indicative of the domain-wall excitations.
