Estimating Treatment Effects in Continuous Time with Hidden Confounders

Estimating treatment effects plays a crucial role in causal inference, having many real-world applications like policy analysis and decision making. Nevertheless, estimating treatment effects in the longitudinal setting in the presence of hidden confounders remains an extremely challenging problem. Recently, there is a growing body of work attempting to obtain unbiased ITE estimates from time-dynamic observational data by ignoring the possible existence of hidden confounders. Additionally, many existing works handling hidden confounders are not applicable for continuous-time settings. In this paper, we extend the line of work focusing on deconfounding in the dynamic time setting in the presence of hidden confounders. We leverage recent advancements in neural differential equations to build a latent factor model using a stochastic controlled differential equation and Lipschitz constrained convolutional operation in order to continuously incorporate information about ongoing interventions and irregularly sampled observations. Experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets highlight the promise of continuous time methods for estimating treatment effects in the presence of hidden confounders.

Parallel Sentence-Level Explanation Generation for Real-World Low-Resource Scenarios

In order to reveal the rationale behind model predictions, many works have exploited providing explanations in various forms. Recently, to further guarantee readability, more and more works turn to generate sentence-level human language explanations. However, current works pursuing sentence-level explanations rely heavily on annotated training data, which limits the development of interpretability to only a few tasks. As far as we know, this paper is the first to explore this problem smoothly from weak-supervised learning to unsupervised learning. Besides, we also notice the high latency of autoregressive sentence-level explanation generation, which leads to asynchronous interpretability after prediction. Therefore, we propose a non-autoregressive interpretable model to facilitate parallel explanation generation and simultaneous prediction. Through extensive experiments on Natural Language Inference task and Spouse Prediction task, we find that users are able to train classifiers with comparable performance $10-15\times$ faster with parallel explanation generation using only a few or no annotated training data.

More results on large sets of Kirkman triple systems

The existence of large sets of Kirkman triple systems (LKTSs) is one of the best-known open problems in combinatorial design theory. Steiner quadruple systems with resolvable derived designs (RDSQSs) play an important role in the recursive constructions of LKTSs. In this paper, we introduce a special combinatorial structure RDSQS*(v) and use it to present a construction for RDSQS(4v). As a consequence, some new infinite families of LKTSs are given.

Vortex-ring quantum droplets in a radially-periodic potential

We establish stability and characteristics of two-dimensional (2D) vortex ring-shaped quantum droplets (QDs) formed by binary Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). The system is modeled by the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation with the cubic term multiplied by a logarithmic factor (as produced by the Lee-Huang-Yang correction to the mean-field theory) and a potential which is a periodic function of the radial coordinate. Narrow vortex rings with high values of the topological charge, trapped in particular circular troughs of the radial potential, are produced. These results suggest an experimentally relevant method for the creation of vortical QDs (thus far, only zero-vorticity ones have been reported). The 2D GP equation for the narrow rings is approximately reduced to the 1D form, which makes it possible to study the modulational stability of the rings against azimuthal perturbations. Full stability areas are delineated for these modes. The trapping capacity of the circular troughs is identified for the vortex rings with different winding numbers (WNs). Stable compound states in the form of mutually nested concentric multiple rings are constructed too, including ones with opposite signs of the WNs. Other robust compound states combine a modulationally stable narrow ring in one circular potential trough and an azimuthal soliton performing orbital motion in an adjacent one. The results may be used to design a device employing coexisting ring-shaped modes with different WNs for data storage.

D$^3$ETR: Decoder Distillation for Detection Transformer

While various knowledge distillation (KD) methods in CNN-based detectors show their effectiveness in improving small students, the baselines and recipes for DETR-based detectors are yet to be built. In this paper, we focus on the transformer decoder of DETR-based detectors and explore KD methods for them. The outputs of the transformer decoder lie in random order, which gives no direct correspondence between the predictions of the teacher and the student, thus posing a challenge for knowledge distillation. To this end, we propose MixMatcher to align the decoder outputs of DETR-based teachers and students, which mixes two teacher-student matching strategies, i.e., Adaptive Matching and Fixed Matching. Specifically, Adaptive Matching applies bipartite matching to adaptively match the outputs of the teacher and the student in each decoder layer, while Fixed Matching fixes the correspondence between the outputs of the teacher and the student with the same object queries, with the teacher's fixed object queries fed to the decoder of the student as an auxiliary group. Based on MixMatcher, we build \textbf{D}ecoder \textbf{D}istillation for \textbf{DE}tection \textbf{TR}ansformer (D$^3$ETR), which distills knowledge in decoder predictions and attention maps from the teachers to students. D$^3$ETR shows superior performance on various DETR-based detectors with different backbones. For example, D$^3$ETR improves Conditional DETR-R50-C5 by $\textbf{7.8}/\textbf{2.4}$ mAP under $12/50$ epochs training settings with Conditional DETR-R101-C5 as the teacher.

DSLOB: A Synthetic Limit Order Book Dataset for Benchmarking Forecasting Algorithms under Distributional Shift

In electronic trading markets, limit order books (LOBs) provide information about pending buy/sell orders at various price levels for a given security. Recently, there has been a growing interest in using LOB data for resolving downstream machine learning tasks (e.g., forecasting). However, dealing with out-of-distribution (OOD) LOB data is challenging since distributional shifts are unlabeled in current publicly available LOB datasets. Therefore, it is critical to build a synthetic LOB dataset with labeled OOD samples serving as a testbed for developing models that generalize well to unseen scenarios. In this work, we utilize a multi-agent market simulator to build a synthetic LOB dataset, named DSLOB, with and without market stress scenarios, which allows for the design of controlled distributional shift benchmarking. Using the proposed synthetic dataset, we provide a holistic analysis on the forecasting performance of three different state-of-the-art forecasting methods. Our results reflect the need for increased researcher efforts to develop algorithms with robustness to distributional shifts in high-frequency time series data.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking of dual-layer solitons in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

It is known that stable 2D solitons of the semi-vortex (SV) and mixed-mode (MM) types are maintained by the interplay of the cubic attractive nonlinearity and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in binary Bose-Einstein condensates. We introduce a double-layer system, in which two binary condensates, stabilized by the SOC, are linearly coupled by tunneling. By means of the numerical methods, it is found that symmetric two-layer solitons undergo the spontaneous-symmetry-breaking (SSB) bifurcation of the subcritical type. The bifurcation produces families of asymmetric 2D solitons, which exist up to the value of the total norm equal to the norm of the Townes solitons, above which the collapse occurs. This situation terminates at a critical value of the inter-layer coupling, beyond which the SSB bifurcation is absent, as the collapse sets in earlier. Symmetric 2D solitons that are destabilized by the SSB demonstrate dynamical symmetry breaking, in combination with intrinsic oscillations of the solitons, or transition to the collapse, if the soliton's norm is sufficiently large. Asymmetric MMs produced by the SSB instability start spontaneous drift, in addition to the intrinsic vibrations. Consideration of moving 2D solitons is a nontrivial problem because SOC breaks the Galilean invariance. It is found that the system supports moving MMs up to a critical value of the velocity, beyond which they undergo delocalization.

Significance-Based Categorical Data Clustering

Although numerous algorithms have been proposed to solve the categorical data clustering problem, how to access the statistical significance of a set of categorical clusters remains unaddressed. To fulfill this void, we employ the likelihood ratio test to derive a test statistic that can serve as a significance-based objective function in categorical data clustering. Consequently, a new clustering algorithm is proposed in which the significance-based objective function is optimized via a Monte Carlo search procedure. As a by-product, we can further calculate an empirical $p$-value to assess the statistical significance of a set of clusters and develop an improved gap statistic for estimating the cluster number. Extensive experimental studies suggest that our method is able to achieve comparable performance to state-of-the-art categorical data clustering algorithms. Moreover, the effectiveness of such a significance-based formulation on statistical cluster validation and cluster number estimation is demonstrated through comprehensive empirical results.

Energy System Digitization in the Era of AI: A Three-Layered Approach towards Carbon Neutrality

The transition towards carbon-neutral electricity is one of the biggest game changers in addressing climate change since it addresses the dual challenges of removing carbon emissions from the two largest sectors of emitters: electricity and transportation. The transition to a carbon-neutral electric grid poses significant challenges to conventional paradigms of modern grid planning and operation. Much of the challenge arises from the scale of the decision making and the uncertainty associated with the energy supply and demand. Artificial Intelligence (AI) could potentially have a transformative impact on accelerating the speed and scale of carbon-neutral transition, as many decision making processes in the power grid can be cast as classic, though challenging, machine learning tasks. We point out that to amplify AI's impact on carbon-neutral transition of the electric energy systems, the AI algorithms originally developed for other applications should be tailored in three layers of technology, markets, and policy.

Counterfactual Neural Temporal Point Process for Estimating Causal Influence of Misinformation on Social Media

Recent years have witnessed the rise of misinformation campaigns that spread specific narratives on social media to manipulate public opinions on different areas, such as politics and healthcare. Consequently, an effective and efficient automatic methodology to estimate the influence of the misinformation on user beliefs and activities is needed. However, existing works on misinformation impact estimation either rely on small-scale psychological experiments or can only discover the correlation between user behaviour and misinformation. To address these issues, in this paper, we build up a causal framework that model the causal effect of misinformation from the perspective of temporal point process. To adapt the large-scale data, we design an efficient yet precise way to estimate the Individual Treatment Effect(ITE) via neural temporal point process and gaussian mixture models. Extensive experiments on synthetic dataset verify the effectiveness and efficiency of our model. We further apply our model on a real-world dataset of social media posts and engagements about COVID-19 vaccines. The experimental results indicate that our model recognized identifiable causal effect of misinformation that hurts people's subjective emotions toward the vaccines.

Mechanical Artifacts in Optical Projection Tomography: Classification and Automatic Calibration

Optical projection tomography (OPT) is a powerful tool for biomedical studies. It achieves 3D visualization of mesoscopic biological samples with high spatial resolution using conventional tomographic-reconstruction algorithms. However, various artifacts degrade the quality of the reconstructed images due to experimental imperfections in the OPT instruments. While many efforts have been made to characterize and correct for these artifacts, they focus on one specific type of artifacts, whereas a comprehensive catalog of all sorts of mechanical artifacts does not currently exist. In this work, we systematically document many mechanical artifacts. We rely on a 3D description of the imaging system that uses a set of angular and translational parameters. We provide a catalog of artifacts. It lists their cause, resulting effects, and existing correction methods. Then, we introduce an automatic calibration algorithm that is able to recover the unknown system parameters fed into the final 3D iterative reconstruction algorithm for a distortion-free volumetric image. Simulations with beads data and experimental results on a fluorescent textile fiber confirm that our algorithm successfully removes miscalibration artifacts in the reconstruction.

Transition to Adulthood for Young People with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities: Emotion Detection and Topic Modeling

Transition to Adulthood is an essential life stage for many families. The prior research has shown that young people with intellectual or development disabil-ities (IDD) have more challenges than their peers. This study is to explore how to use natural language processing (NLP) methods, especially unsupervised machine learning, to assist psychologists to analyze emotions and sentiments and to use topic modeling to identify common issues and challenges that young people with IDD and their families have. Additionally, the results were compared to those obtained from young people without IDD who were in tran-sition to adulthood. The findings showed that NLP methods can be very useful for psychologists to analyze emotions, conduct cross-case analysis, and sum-marize key topics from conversational data. Artifacts in optical projection tomography due to refractive index mismatch: model and correction

Optical Projection Tomography (OPT) is a powerful tool for 3D imaging of mesoscopic samples, thus of great importance to image whole organs for the study of various disease models in life sciences. OPT is able to achieve resolution at a few tens of microns over a large sample volume of several cubic centimeters. However, the reconstructed OPT images often suffer from artifacts caused by different kinds of physical miscalibration. This work focuses on the refractive index (RI) mismatch between the rotating object and the surrounding medium. We derive a 3D cone beam forward model to approximate the effect of RI mismatch and implement a fast and efficient reconstruction method to correct the induced seagull-shaped artifacts on experimental images of fluorescent beads.

Interior of helical black holes

We study the interior structure of five dimensional neutral helical black holes in Einstein gravity and charged helical black holes in Einstein-Maxwell gravity. Inside the neutral helical black holes, the systems evolve to a stable spacelike Kasner singularity. The metric field related to the helical deformation strength exhibits oscillation behavior close to the horizon at low temperature and small helical deformation strength. Inside the charged helical black holes, we show that the inner Cauchy horizon can not exist. The systems also evolve from the horizon to a stable Kasner singularity. We find that the oscillations can exist and there is a special feature that the oscillations occur near the horizon and before the collapse of the Einstein-Rosen bridge for the charged helical black holes.

Dual Space Coupling Model Guided Overlap-Free Scatterplot

The overdraw problem of scatterplots seriously interferes with the visual tasks. Existing methods, such as data sampling, node dispersion, subspace mapping, and visual abstraction, cannot guarantee the correspondence and consistency between the data points that reflect the intrinsic original data distribution and the corresponding visual units that reveal the presented data distribution, thus failing to obtain an overlap-free scatterplot with unbiased and lossless data distribution. A dual space coupling model is proposed in this paper to represent the complex bilateral relationship between data space and visual space theoretically and analytically. Under the guidance of the model, an overlap-free scatterplot method is developed through integration of the following: a geometry-based data transformation algorithm, namely DistributionTranscriptor; an efficient spatial mutual exclusion guided view transformation algorithm, namely PolarPacking; an overlap-free oriented visual encoding configuration model and a radius adjustment tool, namely $f_{r_{draw}}$. Our method can ensure complete and accurate information transfer between the two spaces, maintaining consistency between the newly created scatterplot and the original data distribution on global and local features. Quantitative evaluation proves our remarkable progress on computational efficiency compared with the state-of-the-art methods. Three applications involving pattern enhancement, interaction improvement, and overdraw mitigation of trajectory visualization demonstrate the broad prospects of our method.

Automated Utterance Labeling of Conversations Using Natural Language Processing

Conversational data is essential in psychology because it can help researchers understand individuals cognitive processes, emotions, and behaviors. Utterance labelling is a common strategy for analyzing this type of data. The development of NLP algorithms allows researchers to automate this task. However, psychological conversational data present some challenges to NLP researchers, including multilabel classification, a large number of classes, and limited available data. This study explored how automated labels generated by NLP methods are comparable to human labels in the context of conversations on adulthood transition. We proposed strategies to handle three common challenges raised in psychological studies. Our findings showed that the deep learning method with domain adaptation (RoBERTa-CON) outperformed all other machine learning methods; and the hierarchical labelling system that we proposed was shown to help researchers strategically analyze conversational data. Our Python code and NLP model are available at https://github.com/mlaricheva/automated_labeling.
