A Weyl-$\mathrm{Z}_2$ semimetal from holography

We present effective field theories for the weakly coupled Weyl-$\mathrm{Z}_2$ semimetal, as well as the holographic realization for the strongly coupled case. In both cases, the anomalous systems have both the chiral anomaly and the $\mathrm{Z}_2$ anomaly and possess topological quantum phase transitions from the Weyl-$\mathrm{Z}_2$ semimetal phases to partly or fully topological trivial phases. We find that the topological phase transition is characterized by the anomalous transport parameters, i.e. the anomalous Hall conductivity and the $\mathrm{Z}_2$ anomalous Hall conductivity. These two parameters are nonzero at the Weyl-$\mathrm{Z}_2$ semimetal phase and vanish at the topologically trivial phases. In the holographic case, the different behavior between the two anomalous transport coefficients is discussed. Our work reveals the novel phase structure of strongly interacting Weyl-$\mathrm{Z}_2$ semimetal with two pairs of nodes.

Proof of some conjectural congruences involving Domb numbers

In this paper, we mainly prove the following conjectures of Z.-H. Sun \cite{SH2}: Let $p>3$ be a prime. If $p\equiv1\pmod3$ and $p=x^2+3y^2$, then we have $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{D_k}{4^k}\equiv\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{D_k}{16^k}\equiv4x^2-2p-\frac{p^2}{4x^2}\pmod{p^3}, $$ and if $p\equiv2\pmod3$, then $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{D_k}{4^k}\equiv-2\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{D_k}{16^k}\equiv\frac{p^2}2\binom{\frac{p-1}2}{\frac{p-5}6}^{-2} \pmod{p^3}, $$ where $D_n=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom{n}k^2\binom{2k}k\binom{2n-2k}{n-k}$ stands for the $n$th Domb number.

AlCrO protected textured stainless steel surface for high temperature solar selective absorber applications

The diffusion of substrate material into absorbing layer and oxidation of metal substrate or cermet metal nanoparticles at high temperatures are known as inevitable problems of the solar selective absorbers. In this study, we consider the use of textured stainless steel (SS) surface coated with a protective AlCr oxide layer as a high temperature solar selective absorber. The textured SS surface was prepared by ion etching techniques and AlCr oxide protective layer was deposited by RF magnetron sputtering. The absorptivity and emissivity of the as-prepared absorbers were 0.86-0.92 and 0.151-0.168, respectively. In order to evaluate the thermal stability, the absorbers were annealed at 600-800 C for different time in ambient atmosphere. Absorbers demonstrated a red shift of the onset of the reflectivity at all annealing temperatures. The high activation energy of 315 kJ/mol was calculated. The service lifetime of the absorbers at 500 C was estimated to be about 100 years and at 700 and 800 C the absorbers were stable about 50 and 1 hours, respectively. A detailed examination of the annealed absorber surface revealed growth of surface Mn3O4 nanocrystals, which resulted in observed change of the reflectance spectra, while the textured surface morphology had no significant change. The results show that the protective textured surface has much higher thermal stability in air than iron based cermet absorbers.

Quantum calibrated magnetic force microscopy

We report the quantum calibration of a magnetic force microscope (MFM) by measuring the two-dimensional magnetic stray field distribution of the MFM tip using a single nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in diamond. From the measured stray field distribution and the mechanical properties of the cantilever a calibration function is derived allowing to convert MFM images to quantum calibrated stray field maps. This novel approach overcomes limitations of prior MFM calibration schemes and allows quantum calibrated nanoscale stray field measurements in a field range inaccessible to scanning NV magnetometry. Quantum calibrated measurements of a stray field reference sample allow its use as a transfer standard, opening the road towards fast and easily accessible quantum traceable calibrations of virtually any MFM.

Asymptotic Properties of the Maximum Likelihood Estimator in Regime-Switching Models with Time-Varying Transition Probabilities

We prove the asymptotic properties of the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) in time-varying transition probability (TVTP) regime-switching models. This class of models extends the constant regime transition probability in Markov-switching models to a time-varying probability by including information from observations. An important feature in this proof is the mixing rate of the regime process conditional on the observations, which is time varying owing to the time-varying transition probabilities. Consistency and asymptotic normality follow from the almost deterministic geometrically decaying bound of the mixing rate. The assumptions are verified in regime-switching autoregressive models with widely-applied TVTP specifications. A simulation study examines the finite-sample distributions of the MLE and compares the estimates of the asymptotic variance constructed from the Hessian matrix and the outer product of the score. The simulation results favour the latter. As an empirical example, we compare three leading economic indicators in terms of describing U.S. industrial production.

On two congruence conjectures of Z.-W. Sun involving Franel numbers

In this paper, we mainly prove the following conjectures of Z.-W. Sun \cite{S13}: Let $p>2$ be a prime. If $p=x^2+3y^2$ with $x,y\in\mathbb{Z}$ and $x\equiv1\pmod 3$, then $$x\equiv\frac14\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(3k+4)\frac{f_k} {2^k}\equiv\frac12\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(3k+2)\frac{f_k}{(-4)^k}\pmod{p^2},$$ and if $p\equiv1\pmod3$, then $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{f_k}{2^k}\equiv\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{f_k}{(-4)^k}\pmod{p^3},$$ where $f_n=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom{n}k^3$ stands for the $n$th Franel number.

Two-dimensional flow field measurement of sediment-laden flow based on ultrasound image velocimetry

This paper proposes a novel particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique to generate an instantaneous two-dimensional velocity field for sediment-laden fluid based on the optical flow algorithm of ultrasound imaging. In this paper, an ultrasonic PIV (UPIV) system is constructed by integrating a medical ultrasound instrument and an ultrasonic particle image velocimetry algorithm. The medical ultrasound instrument with a phased sensor array is used to acquire acoustic echo signals and generate two-dimensional underwater ultrasound images. Based on the optical flow field, the instantaneous velocity of the particles in water corresponding to the pixels in the ultrasonic particle images is derived from the grayscale change between adjacent images under the L-K local constraint, and finally, the two-dimensional flow field is obtained. Through multiple sets of experiments, the proposed algorithm is verified. The experimental results are compared with those of the conventional cross-correlation algorithms. The results show that the L-K optical flow method can not only obtain the underwater velocity field accurately but also has the advantages of good smoothness and extensive suitability, especially for the flow field measurement in sediment-laden fluid than conventional algorithms.

Optimization of Grant-Free NOMA with Multiple Configured-Grants for mURLLC

Massive Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communications (mURLLC), which integrates URLLC with massive access, is emerging as a new and important service class in the next generation (6G) for time-sensitive traffics and has recently received tremendous research attention. However, realizing efficient, delay-bounded, and reliable communications for a massive number of user equipments (UEs) in mURLLC, is extremely challenging as it needs to simultaneously take into account the latency, reliability, and massive access requirements. To support these requirements, the third generation partnership project (3GPP) has introduced enhanced grant-free (GF) transmission in the uplink (UL), with multiple active configured-grants (CGs) for URLLC UEs. With multiple CGs (MCG) for UL, UE can choose any of these grants as soon as the data arrives. In addition, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been proposed to synergize with GF transmission to mitigate the serious transmission delay and network congestion problems. In this paper, we develop a novel learning framework for MCG-GF-NOMA systems with bursty traffic. We first design the MCG-GF-NOMA model by characterizing each CG using the parameters: the number of contention-transmission units (CTUs), the starting slot of each CG within a subframe, and the number of repetitions of each CG. Based on the model, the latency and reliability performances are characterized. We then formulate the MCG-GF-NOMA resources configuration problem taking into account three constraints. Finally, we propose a Cooperative Multi-Agent based Double Deep Q-Network (CMA-DDQN) algorithm to allocate the channel resources among MCGs so as to maximize the number of successful transmissions under the latency constraint. Our results show that the MCG-GF-NOMA framework can simultaneously improve the low latency and high reliability performances in massive URLLC.

Large-Scale Hyperspectral Image Clustering Using Contrastive Learning

Clustering of hyperspectral images is a fundamental but challenging task. The recent development of hyperspectral image clustering has evolved from shallow models to deep and achieved promising results in many benchmark datasets. However, their poor scalability, robustness, and generalization ability, mainly resulting from their offline clustering scenarios, greatly limit their application to large-scale hyperspectral data. To circumvent these problems, we present a scalable deep online clustering model, named Spectral-Spatial Contrastive Clustering (SSCC), based on self-supervised learning. Specifically, we exploit a symmetric twin neural network comprised of a projection head with a dimensionality of the cluster number to conduct dual contrastive learning from a spectral-spatial augmentation pool. We define the objective function by implicitly encouraging within-cluster similarity and reducing between-cluster redundancy. The resulting approach is trained in an end-to-end fashion by batch-wise optimization, making it robust in large-scale data and resulting in good generalization ability for unseen data. Extensive experiments on three hyperspectral image benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach and show that we advance the state-of-the-art approaches by large margins.

StrucTexT: Structured Text Understanding with Multi-Modal Transformers

Structured text understanding on Visually Rich Documents (VRDs) is a crucial part of Document Intelligence. Due to the complexity of content and layout in VRDs, structured text understanding has been a challenging task. Most existing studies decoupled this problem into two sub-tasks: entity labeling and entity linking, which require an entire understanding of the context of documents at both token and segment levels. However, little work has been concerned with the solutions that efficiently extract the structured data from different levels. This paper proposes a unified framework named StrucTexT, which is flexible and effective for handling both sub-tasks. Specifically, based on the transformer, we introduce a segment-token aligned encoder to deal with the entity labeling and entity linking tasks at different levels of granularity. Moreover, we design a novel pre-training strategy with three self-supervised tasks to learn a richer representation. StrucTexT uses the existing Masked Visual Language Modeling task and the new Sentence Length Prediction and Paired Boxes Direction tasks to incorporate the multi-modal information across text, image, and layout. We evaluate our method for structured text understanding at segment-level and token-level and show it outperforms the state-of-the-art counterparts with significantly superior performance on the FUNSD, SROIE, and EPHOIE datasets.

Unsupervised PET Reconstruction from a Bayesian Perspective

Positron emission tomography (PET) reconstruction has become an ill-posed inverse problem due to low-count projection data, and a robust algorithm is urgently required to improve imaging quality. Recently, the deep image prior (DIP) has drawn much attention and has been successfully applied in several image restoration tasks, such as denoising and inpainting, since it does not need any labels (reference image). However, overfitting is a vital defect of this framework. Hence, many methods have been proposed to mitigate this problem, and DeepRED is a typical representation that combines DIP and regularization by denoising (RED). In this article, we leverage DeepRED from a Bayesian perspective to reconstruct PET images from a single corrupted sinogram without any supervised or auxiliary information. In contrast to the conventional denoisers customarily used in RED, a DnCNN-like denoiser, which can add an adaptive constraint to DIP and facilitate the computation of derivation, is employed. Moreover, to further enhance the regularization, Gaussian noise is injected into the gradient updates, deriving a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampler. Experimental studies on brain and whole-body datasets demonstrate that our proposed method can achieve better performance in terms of qualitative and quantitative results compared to several classic and state-of-the-art methods.

VigDet: Knowledge Informed Neural Temporal Point Process for Coordination Detection on Social Media

Recent years have witnessed an increasing use of coordinated accounts on social media, operated by misinformation campaigns to influence public opinion and manipulate social outcomes. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop an effective methodology for coordinated group detection to combat the misinformation on social media. However, existing works suffer from various drawbacks, such as, either limited performance due to extreme reliance on predefined signatures of coordination, or instead an inability to address the natural sparsity of account activities on social media with useful prior domain knowledge. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a coordination detection framework incorporating neural temporal point process with prior knowledge such as temporal logic or pre-defined filtering functions. Specifically, when modeling the observed data from social media with neural temporal point process, we jointly learn a Gibbs-like distribution of group assignment based on how consistent an assignment is to (1) the account embedding space and (2) the prior knowledge. To address the challenge that the distribution is hard to be efficiently computed and sampled from, we design a theoretically guaranteed variational inference approach to learn a mean-field approximation for it. Experimental results on a real-world dataset show the effectiveness of our proposed method compared to the SOTA model in both unsupervised and semi-supervised settings. We further apply our model on a COVID-19 Vaccine Tweets dataset. The detection result suggests the presence of suspicious coordinated efforts on spreading misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines.

Mixed Supervised Object Detection by Transferring Mask Prior and Semantic Similarity

Object detection has achieved promising success, but requires large-scale fully-annotated data, which is time-consuming and labor-extensive. Therefore, we consider object detection with mixed supervision, which learns novel object categories using weak annotations with the help of full annotations of existing base object categories. Previous works using mixed supervision mainly learn the class-agnostic objectness from fully-annotated categories, which can be transferred to upgrade the weak annotations to pseudo full annotations for novel categories. In this paper, we further transfer mask prior and semantic similarity to bridge the gap between novel categories and base categories. Specifically, the ability of using mask prior to help detect objects is learned from base categories and transferred to novel categories. Moreover, the semantic similarity between objects learned from base categories is transferred to denoise the pseudo full annotations for novel categories. Experimental results on three benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method over existing methods. Codes are available at https://github.com/bcmi/TraMaS-Weak-Shot-Object-Detection.

Characterizing Online Engagement with Disinformation and Conspiracies in the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election

Identifying and characterizing disinformation in political discourse on social media is critical to ensure the integrity of elections and democratic processes around the world. Persistent manipulation of social media has resulted in increased concerns regarding the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election, due to its potential to influence individual opinions and social dynamics. In this work, we focus on the identification of distorted facts, in the form of unreliable and conspiratorial narratives in election-related tweets, to characterize discourse manipulation prior to the election. We apply a detection model to separate factual from unreliable (or conspiratorial) claims analyzing a dataset of 242 million election-related tweets. The identified claims are used to investigate targeted topics of disinformation, and conspiracy groups, most notably the far-right QAnon conspiracy group. Further, we characterize account engagements with unreliable and conspiracy tweets, and with the QAnon conspiracy group, by political leaning and tweet types. Finally, using a regression discontinuity design, we investigate whether Twitter's actions to curb QAnon activity on the platform were effective, and how QAnon accounts adapt to Twitter's restrictions.

AskMe: Joint Individual-level and Community-level Behavior Interaction for Question Recommendation

Questions in Community Question Answering (CQA) sites are recommended to users, mainly based on users' interest extracted from questions that users have answered or have asked. However, there is a general phenomenon that users answer fewer questions while pay more attention to follow questions and vote answers. This can impact the performance when recommending questions to users (for obtaining their answers) by using their historical answering behaviors on existing studies. To address the data sparsity issue, we propose AskMe, which aims to leverage the rich, hybrid behavior interactions in CQA to improve the question recommendation performance. On the one hand, we model the rich correlations between the users' diverse behaviors (e.g., answer, follow, vote) to obtain the individual-level behavior interaction. On the other hand, we model the sophisticated behavioral associations between similar users to obtain the community-level behavior interaction. Finally, we propose the way of element-level fusion to mix these two kinds of interactions together to predict the ranking scores. A dataset collected from Zhihu (1126 users, 219434 questions) is utilized to evaluate the performance of the proposed model, and the experimental results show that our model has gained the best performance compared to baseline methods, especially when the historical answering behaviors data is scarce.

Enhance Long Text Understanding via Distilled Gist Detector from Abstractive Summarization

Long text understanding is important yet challenging in natural language processing. A long article or essay usually contains many redundant words that are not pertinent to its gist and sometimes can be regarded as noise. In this paper, we consider the problem of how to disentangle the gist-relevant and irrelevant information for long text understanding. With distillation mechanism, we transfer the knowledge about how to focus the salient parts from the abstractive summarization model and further integrate the distilled model, named \emph{Gist Detector}, into existing models as a supplementary component to augment the long text understanding. Experiments on document classification, distantly supervised open-domain question answering (DS-QA) and non-parallel text style transfer show that our method can significantly improve the performance of the baseline models, and achieves state-of-the-art overall results for document classification.

The impact of data volume on performance of deep learning based building rooftop extraction using very high spatial resolution aerial images

Building rooftop data are of importance in several urban applications and in natural disaster management. In contrast to traditional surveying and mapping, by using high spatial resolution aerial images, deep learning-based building rooftops extraction methods are efficient and accurate. Although more training data is preferred in deep learning-based tasks, the effect of data volume on building extraction models is underexplored. Therefore, the paper explores the impact of data volume on the performance of building rooftop extraction from very-high-spatial-resolution (VHSR) images using deep learning-based methods. To do so, we manually labelled 0.12m spatial resolution aerial images and perform a comparative analysis of models trained on datasets of different sizes using popular deep learning architectures for segmentation tasks, including Fully Convolutional Networks (FCN)-8s, U-Net and DeepLabv3+. The experiments showed that with more training data, algorithms converged faster and achieved higher accuracy, while better algorithms were able to better mitigate the lack of training data.

Black hole singularities across phase transitions

We study the behavior of black hole singularities across the Hawking-Page phase transitions, uncovering possible connections between the physics inside and outside the horizon. We focus on the case of spacelike singularities in Einstein-scalar theory which are of the Kasner form. We find that the Kasner exponents are continuous and non-differentiable during the second order phase transitions, while discontinuous in the first order phase transitions. We give some arguments on the universality of this behavior. We also discuss possible observables in the dual field theory which encode the Kasner exponents.
