Focussing light in a bi-anisotropic slab with negatively refracting materials

We investigate the electromagnetic response of a pair of complementary bi-anisotropic media, which consist of a medium with positive refractive index ($+\ep$, $+μ$, $+ξ$) and a medium with negative refractive index($-\ep$, $-μ$, $-ξ$). We show that this idealized system has peculiar imaging properties in that it reproduces images of a source, in principle, with unlimited resolution. We then consider an infinite array of line sources regularly spaced in a one-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) consisting of 2n-layers of bi-anisotropic complementary media. Using coordinate transformation, we map this system into 2D corner chiral lenses of 2n heterogeneous anisotropic complementary media sharing a vertex, within which light circles around closed trajectories. Alternatively, one can consider corner lenses with homogeneous isotropic media and map them onto one dimensional PCs with heterogeneous bi-anisotropic layers. Interestingly, such complementary media are described by scalar, or matrix valued, sign-shifting parameters, which satisfy a generalized lens theorem, which can be derived using Fourier series solutions of the Maxwell's equations (in the former case), or from space-time symmetry arguments (in the latter case). Also of interest are 2D periodic checkerboards alternating rectangular cells of complementary media which are such that one point source in one cell gives rise to an infinite set of images with an image in every other cell. Such checkerboards can be mapped into a class of three-dimensional corner lenses of complementary bi-anisotropic media.

Lattice potentials and fermions in holographic non Fermi-liquids: hybridizing local quantum criticality

We study lattice effects in strongly coupled systems of fermions at a finite density described by a holographic dual consisting of fermions in Anti-de-Sitter space in the presence of a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. The lattice effect is encoded by a periodic modulation of the chemical potential with a wavelength of order of the intrinsic length scales of the system. This corresponds with a highly complicated "band structure" problem in AdS, which we only manage to solve in the weak potential limit. The "domain wall" fermions in AdS encoding for the Fermi surfaces in the boundary field theory diffract as usually against the periodic lattice, giving rise to band gaps. However, the deep infrared of the field theory as encoded by the near horizon AdS2 geometry in the bulk reacts in a surprising way to the weak potential. The hybridization of the fermions bulk dualizes into a linear combination of CFT1 "local quantum critical" propagators in the bulk, characterized by momentum dependent exponents displaced by lattice Umklapp vectors. This has the consequence that the metals showing quasi-Fermi surfaces cannot be localized in band insulators. In the AdS2 metal regime, where the conformal dimension of the fermionic operator is large and no Fermi surfaces are present at low T/μ, the lattice gives rise to a characteristic dependence of the energy scaling as a function of momentum. We predict crossovers from a high energy standard momentum AdS2 scaling to a low energy regime where exponents found associated with momenta "backscattered" to a lower Brillioun zone in the extended zone scheme. We comment on how these findings can be used as a unique fingerprint for the detection of AdS2 like "pseudogap metals" in the laboratory.

Phase Diagram and High Temperature Superconductivity at 65 K in Tuning Carrier Concentration of Single-Layer FeSe Films

Superconductivity in the cuprate superconductors and the Fe-based superconductors is realized by doping the parent compound with charge carriers, or by application of high pressure, to suppress the antiferromagnetic state. Such a rich phase diagram is important in understanding superconductivity mechanism and other physics in the Cu- and Fe-based high temperature superconductors. In this paper, we report a phase diagram in the single-layer FeSe films grown on SrTiO3 substrate by an annealing procedure to tune the charge carrier concentration over a wide range. A dramatic change of the band structure and Fermi surface is observed, with two distinct phases identified that are competing during the annealing process. Superconductivity with a record high transition temperature (Tc) at ~65 K is realized by optimizing the annealing process. The wide tunability of the system across different phases, and its high-Tc, make the single-layer FeSe film ideal not only to investigate the superconductivity physics and mechanism, but also to study novel quantum phenomena and for potential applications.

Collaborative Topic Regression with Social Matrix Factorization for Recommendation Systems

Social network websites, such as Facebook, YouTube, Lastfm etc, have become a popular platform for users to connect with each other and share content or opinions. They provide rich information for us to study the influence of user's social circle in their decision process. In this paper, we are interested in examining the effectiveness of social network information to predict the user's ratings of items. We propose a novel hierarchical Bayesian model which jointly incorporates topic modeling and probabilistic matrix factorization of social networks. A major advantage of our model is to automatically infer useful latent topics and social information as well as their importance to collaborative filtering from the training data. Empirical experiments on two large-scale datasets show that our algorithm provides a more effective recommendation system than the state-of-the art approaches. Our results reveal interesting insight that the social circles have more influence on people's decisions about the usefulness of information (e.g., bookmarking preference on Delicious) than personal taste (e.g., music preference on Lastfm). We also examine and discuss solutions on potential information leak in many recommendation systems that utilize social information.

Sparse-GEV: Sparse Latent Space Model for Multivariate Extreme Value Time Serie Modeling

In many applications of time series models, such as climate analysis and social media analysis, we are often interested in extreme events, such as heatwave, wind gust, and burst of topics. These time series data usually exhibit a heavy-tailed distribution rather than a Gaussian distribution. This poses great challenges to existing approaches due to the significantly different assumptions on the data distributions and the lack of sufficient past data on extreme events. In this paper, we propose the Sparse-GEV model, a latent state model based on the theory of extreme value modeling to automatically learn sparse temporal dependence and make predictions. Our model is theoretically significant because it is among the first models to learn sparse temporal dependencies among multivariate extreme value time series. We demonstrate the superior performance of our algorithm to the state-of-art methods, including Granger causality, copula approach, and transfer entropy, on one synthetic dataset, one climate dataset and two Twitter datasets.

Spatially homogeneous Lifshitz black holes in five dimensional higher derivative gravity

We consider spatially homogeneous Lifshitz black hole solutions in five dimensional higher derivative gravity theories, which can be possible near horizon geometries of some systems that are interesting in the framework of gauge/gravity duality. We show the solutions belonging to the nine Bianchi classes in the pure R^2 gravity. We find that these black holes have zero entropy at non-zero temperatures and this property is the same as the case of BTZ black holes in new massive gravity at the critical point. In the most general quadratic curvature gravity theories, we find new solutions in Bianchi Type I and Type IX cases.

Observing the origin of superconductivity in quantum critical metals

Despite intense efforts during the last 25 years, the physics of unconventional superconductors, including the cuprates with a very high transition temperature, is still a controversial subject. It is believed that superconductivity in many of these strongly correlated metallic systems originates in the physics of quantum phase transitions, but quite diverse perspectives have emerged on the fundamentals of the electron-pairing physics, ranging from Hertz style critical spin fluctuation glue to the holographic superconductivity of string theory. Here we demonstrate that the gross energy scaling differences that are behind these various pairing mechanisms are directly encoded in the frequency and temperature dependence of the dynamical pair susceptibility. This quantity can be measured directly via the second order Josephson effect and it should be possible employing modern experimental techniques to build a `pairing telescope' that gives a direct view on the origin of quantum critical superconductivity.

Search for H dibaryon on the lattice

We investigate the H-dibaryon, an $I(J^{P})=0(0^{+})$ with $s=-2$, in the chiral and continuum regimes on anisotropic lattices in quenched QCD. Simulations are performed on very coarse lattices with refined techniques to obtain results with high accuracy over a spatial lattice spacing in the range of $a_{s} \sim 0.19 - 0.41$ fm. We present results for the energy difference between the ground state energy of the hexa-quark stranglet and the free two-baryon state from our ensembles. A negative binding energy observed in the chirally extrapolated results leads to the conclusion that the measured hexa-quark state is bound. This is further confirmed by the attractive interaction in the continuum limit with the observed H-dibaryon bound by $\sim 47$ MeV.

Spectral probes of the holographic Fermi groundstate: dialing between the electron star and AdS Dirac hair

We argue that the electron star and the AdS Dirac hair solution are two limits of the free charged Fermi gas in AdS. Spectral functions of holographic duals to probe fermions in the background of electron stars have a free parameter that quantifies the number of constituent fermions that make up the charge and energy density characterizing the electron star solution. The strict electron star limit takes this number to be infinite. The Dirac hair solution is the limit where this number is unity. This is evident in the behavior of the distribution of holographically dual Fermi surfaces. As we decrease the number of constituents in a fixed electron star background the number of Fermi surfaces also decreases. An improved holographic Fermi groundstate should be a configuration that shares the qualitative properties of both limits.

Growth, Characterization and Fermi Surface of Heavy Fermion CeCoIn5 Superconductor

High quality single crystals of heavy Fermion CeCoIn5 superconductor have been grown by flux method with a typical size of (1~2)mm x (1~2)mm x ~0.1 mm. The single crystals are characterized by structural analysis from X-ray diffraction and Laue diffraction, as well as compositional analysis. Magnetic and electrical measurements on the single crystals show a sharp superconducting transition with a transition temperature at Tc(onset) ~ 2.3 K and a transition width of ~0.15 K. The resistivity of the CeCoIn5 crystal exhibits a hump at ~45 K which is typical of a heavy Fermion system. High resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of CeCoIn5 reveal clear Fermi surface sheets that are consistent with the band structure calculations when assuming itinerant Ce 4f electrons at low temperature. This work provides important information on the electronic structure of heavy Fermion CeCoIn5 superconductor. It also lays a foundation for further studies on the physical properties and superconducting mechanism of the heavy Fermion superconductors.

Holographic Superconductors from Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton Gravity

We construct holographic superconductors from Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity in 3+1 dimensions with two adjustable couplings $α$ and the charge $q$ carried by the scalar field. For the values of $α$ and $q$ we consider, there is always a critical temperature at which a second order phase transition occurs between a hairy black hole and the AdS RN black hole in the canonical ensemble, which can be identified with the superconducting phase transition of the dual field theory. We calculate the electric conductivity of the dual superconductor and find that for the values of $α$ and $q$ where $α/q$ is small the dual superconductor has similar properties to the minimal model, while for the values of $α$ and $q$ where $α/q$ is large enough, the electric conductivity of the dual superconductor exhibits novel properties at low frequencies where it shows a "Drude Peak" in the real part of the conductivity.

Transport Coefficients from Extremal Gauss-Bonnet Black Holes

We calculate the shear viscosity of strongly coupled field theories dual to Gauss-Bonnet gravity at zero temperature with nonzero chemical potential. We find that the ratio of the shear viscosity over the entropy density is $1/4π$, which is in accordance with the zero temperature limit of the ratio at nonzero temperatures. We also calculate the DC conductivity for this system at zero temperature and find that the real part of the DC conductivity vanishes up to a delta function, which is similar to the result in Einstein gravity. We show that at zero temperature, we can still have the conclusion that the shear viscosity is fully determined by the effective coupling of transverse gravitons in a kind of theories that the effective action of transverse gravitons can be written into a form of minimally coupled scalars with a deformed effective coupling.

A Lifshitz Black Hole in Four Dimensional R^2 Gravity

We consider a higher derivative gravity theory in four dimensions with a negative cosmological constant and show that vacuum solutions of both Lifshitz type and Schrödinger type with arbitrary dynamical exponent z exist in this system. Then we find an analytic black hole solution which asymptotes to the vacuum Lifshitz solution with z=3/2 at a specific value of the coupling constant. We analyze the thermodynamic behavior of this black hole and find that the black hole has zero entropy while non-zero temperature, which is very similar to the case of BTZ black holes in new massive gravity at a specific coupling. In addition, we find that the three dimensional Lifshitz black hole recently found by E. Ayon-Beato et al. has a negative entropy and mass when the Newton constant is taken to be positive.

On the z=4 Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

We consider z=4 Horava-Lifshitz gravity in both 3+1 and 4+1 dimensions. We find black hole solutions in the IR region for a kind of z=4 Horava-Lifshitz gravity which is inherited from the new massive gravity in three dimensions and an analog of the new massive gravity in four dimensions through the quantum inheritance principle. We analyze thermodynamic properties for the black hole solutions for z=4 Horava-Lifshitz gravity. We also write out the Friedmann equation in 3+1 dimensions for cosmological solutions.

On the Generalized Massive Gravity in $AdS_3$

In this note we investigate the generalized massive gravity in asymptotically $AdS_3$ spacetime by combining the two mass terms of topological massive gravity and new massive gravity theory. We study the linearized excitations around the $AdS_3$ background and find that at a specific value of a certain combination of the two mass parameters (chiral line), one of the massive graviton solutions becomes the left moving massless mode. It is shown that the theory is chiral at this line under Brown-Henneaux boundary condition. Because of this degeneration of the gravitons the new log solution which has a logarithmic asymptotic behavior is also a solution to this gravity theory at the chiral line. The log boundary condition which was proposed to accommodate this log solution is proved to be consistent at this chiral line. The resulting theory is no longer chiral except at a special point on the chiral line, where another new solution with log-square asymptotic behavior exists. At this special point, we prove that a new kind of boundary condition called log-square boundary condition, which accommodates this new solution, can be consistent.

Consistent Boundary Conditions for New Massive Gravity in $AdS_3$

In this note we study the boundary conditions for the new massive gravity theory in asymptotically $AdS_3$ spacetime. We find that the Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions are consistent with the new massive gravity for all any value of the mass parameter. At the critical point where the central charge vanishes, the conserved charges vanish, too. This provides further evidence that the theory may be trivial at the critical point under Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions. The log boundary conditions are also examined and we find that we can have three kinds of log boundary conditions for this new massive gravity theory, each of which could be consistent at the critical point, while for other value of the mass parameter, the log gravity boundary condition is not consistent.

Note on New Massive Gravity in $AdS_3$

In this note we study the properties of linearized gravitational excitations in the new massive gravity theory in asymptotically $AdS_3$ spacetime and find that there is also a critical point for the mass parameter at which massive gravitons become massless as in topological massive gravity in $AdS_3$. However, at this critical point in the new massive gravity the energy of all branches of highest weight gravitons vanish and the central charges also vanish within the Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions. The new massive gravity in asymptotically $AdS_3$ spacetime seems to be trivial at this critical point under the Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions if the Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions can be consistent with this theory. At this point, the boundary conditions of log gravity may be preferred.

Critical Behavior of Ferromagnetic Ising Model on Triangular Lattice

We apply a new updating algorithm scheme to investigate the critical behavior of the two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice with nearest neighbour interactions. The transition is examined by generating accurate data for large lattices with $L=8,10,12,15,20,25,30,40,50$. The spin updating algorithm we employ has the advantages of both metropolis and single-update methods. Our study indicates that the transition to be continuous at $T_c=3.6403(2)$. A convincing finite-size scaling analysis of the model yield $ν=0.9995(21)$, $β/ν=0.12400(18)$, $γ/ν=1.75223(22)$, $γ'/ν=1.7555(22)$, $α/ν=0.00077(420)$ (scaling) and $α/ν=0.0010(42)$(hyperscaling) respectively. Estimates of present scheme yield accurate estimates for all critical exponents than those obtained with Monte Carlo methods and show an excellent agreement with their well-established predicted values.
