Spatially resolved broad-band synchrotron emission from the non-thermal limbs of SN1006

We present ~400ks NuSTAR observations of the northeast (NE) and southwest (SW) non-thermal limbs of the Galactic SNR SN1006. We discovered three sources with X-ray emission detected at >50keV. Two of them are identified as background AGN. We extract the NuSTAR spectra from a few regions along the non-thermal limbs and jointly analyze them with the XMM-Newton spectra and the radio data. The broad-band radio/X-ray spectra can be well described with a synchrotron emission model from a single population of CR electrons with a power law energy distribution and an exponential cutoff. The power law index of the electron particle distribution function (PDF) is ~1.88-1.95 for both the NE and SW limbs, and we do not find significant evidence for a variation of this index at different energy (curvature). There are significant spatial variations of the synchrotron emission parameters. The highest energy electrons are accelerated in regions with the lowest expansion velocity, which is opposite to what has been found in the Tycho's SNR. In addition to a gradual steepening of synchrotron emission from the center of the non-thermal limbs to larger azimuthal angles, we also find that both the emission spectrum and the PDF are significantly flatter in three regions in the SW limb where the shock encounters higher density ambient medium. The NE limb also shows significantly higher cutoff energy in the PDF than the SW limb. By comparing with the roughly symmetric TeV emission and largely asymmetric GeV emission from the two non-thermal limbs, we conclude that the asymmetry in the ambient medium and magnetic fields may have largely modified the acceleration and emission of CR leptons.

Painlevé III$'$ and the Hankel Determinant Generated by a Singularly Perturbed Gaussian Weight

In this paper, we study the Hankel determinant generated by a singularly perturbed Gaussian weight $$ w(x,t)=\mathrm{e}^{-x^{2}-\frac{t}{x^{2}}},\;\;x\in(-\infty, \infty),\;\;t>0. $$ By using the ladder operator approach associated with the orthogonal polynomials, we show that the logarithmic derivative of the Hankel determinant satisfies both a non-linear second order difference equation and a non-linear second order differential equation. The Hankel determinant also admits an integral representation involving a Painlevé III$'$. Furthermore, we consider the asymptotics of the Hankel determinant under a double scaling, i.e. $n\rightarrow\infty$ and $t\rightarrow 0$ such that $s=(2n+1)t$ is fixed. The asymptotic expansions of the scaled Hankel determinant for large $s$ and small $s$ are established, from which Dyson's constant appears.

The Large-scale ISM of SS433/W50 Revisited

With new high-resolution CO and HI data, we revisited the large-scale interstellar medium (ISM) environment toward the SS 433/W50 system. We find that two interesting molecular cloud (MC) concentrations, G39.315-1.155 and G40.331-4.302, are well aligned along the precession cone of SS 433 within a smaller opening angle of ~7deg. The kinematic features of the two MCs at ~73--84 km/s, as well as those of the corresponding atomic-gas counterparts, are consistent with the kinematic characteristics of SS 433. That is, the receding gas from SS 433 jet is probably responsible for the redshifted feature of G39.315-1.155 near the Galactic plane and the approaching one may power the blueshifted gas of G40.331-4.302 toward the observer. Moreover, the HI emission at VLSR~70--90 km/s displays the morphological resemblance with the radio nebula W50. We suggest that the VLSR=77\pm5 km/s gas is physically associated with SS 433/W50, leading to a near kinematic distance of 4.9\pm0.4 kpc for the system. The observed gas features, which are located outside the current radio boundaries of W50, are probably the fossil record of jet-ISM interactions at ~10^5 years ago. The energetic jets of the unique microquasar have profound effects on its ISM environment, which may facilitate the formation of molecular gas on the timescale of <0.1 Myr for the ram pressure of ~2x10^6 K cm-3.

Resonant scattering effect on the soft X-ray line emission from the hot interstellar medium: I. galactic bulges

Diffuse soft X-ray line emission is commonly used to trace the thermal and chemical properties of the hot interstellar medium, as well as its content, in nearby galaxies. Although resonant line scattering complicates the interpretation of the emission, it also offers an opportunity to measure the kinematics of the medium. We have implemented a direct Monte Carlo simulation scheme that enables us to account for resonant scattering effect in the medium, in principle, with arbitrary spatial, thermal, chemical, and kinematic distributions. Here we apply this scheme via dimensionless calculation to an isothermal, chemically uniform, and spherically symmetric medium with a radial density distribution characterized by a $β$-model. This application simultaneously account for both optical depth-dependent spatial distortion and intensity change of the resonant line emission due to the scattering, consistent with previous calculations. We further apply the modeling scheme to the OVII and OVIII emission line complex observed in the XMM-Newton RGS spectrum of the M31 bulge. This modeling, though with various limitations due to its simplicity, shows that the resonant scattering could indeed account for much of the spatial distortion of the emission, as well as the relative strengths of the lines, especially the large forbidden to resonant line ratio of the OVII He$α$ triplet. We estimate the isotropic turbulence Mach number of the medium in M31 as $\sim0.17$ for the first time and the line-emitting gas temperature as $\sim2.3\times10^6$ K. We conclude that the resonant scattering may in general play an important role in shaping the soft X-ray spectra of diffuse hot gas in normal galaxies.

Painlevé Transcendents and the Hankel Determinants Generated by a Discontinuous Gaussian Weight

This paper studies the Hankel determinants generated by a discontinuous Gaussian weight with one and two jumps. It is an extension of Chen and Pruessner \cite{Chen2005}, in which they studied the discontinuous Gaussian weight with a single jump. By using the ladder operator approach, we obtain a series of difference and differential equations to describe the Hankel determinant for the single jump case. These equations include the Chazy II equation, continuous and discrete Painlevé IV. In addition, we consider the large $n$ behavior of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials and prove that they satisfy the biconfluent Heun equation. We also consider the jump at the edge under a double scaling, from which a Painlevé XXXIV appeared. Furthermore, we study the Gaussian weight with two jumps, and show that a quantity related to the Hankel determinant satisfies a two variables' generalization of the Jimbo-Miwa-Okamoto $σ$ form of the Painlevé IV.

An Investigation of the Interstellar Environment of Supernova Remnant CTB 87

We present a new millimeter CO-line observation towards supernova remnant (SNR) CTB 87, which was regarded purely as a pulsar wind nebula (PWN), and an optical investigation of a coincident surrounding superbubble. The CO observation shows that the SNR delineated by the radio emission is projectively covered by a molecular cloud (MC) complex at V$_{\rm {LSR}}$ = $-60$ to $-54$ km s$^{-1}$. Both the symmetric axis of the radio emission and the trailing X-ray PWN appear projectively to be along a gap between two molecular gas patches at $-58$ to $-57$ km s$^{-1}$. Asymmetric broad profiles of $^{12}$CO lines peaked at $-58$ km s$^{-1}$ are found at the eastern and southwestern edges of the radio emission. This represents a kinematic signature consistent with an SNR-MC interaction. We also find that a superbubble, $\sim 37'$ in radius, appears to surround the SNR from HI 21cm (V$_{\rm {LSR}} \sim -61$ to $-68$ km s$^{-1}$), WISE mid-IR, and optical extinction data. We build a multi-band photometric stellar sample of stars within the superbubble region and find 82 OB star candidates. The likely peak distance in the stars' distribution seems consistent with the distance previously suggested for CTB 87. We suggest the arc-like radio emission is mainly the relic of the part of blastwave that propagates into the MC complex and is now in a radiative stage while the other part of blastwave has been expanding into the low-density region in the superbubble. This scenario naturally explains the lack of the X-ray emission related to the ejecta and blastwave. The SNR-MC interaction also favours a hadronic contribution to the γ-ray emission from the CTB 87 region.

Souper: A Synthesizing Superoptimizer

If we can automatically derive compiler optimizations, we might be able to sidestep some of the substantial engineering challenges involved in creating and maintaining a high-quality compiler. We developed Souper, a synthesizing superoptimizer, to see how far these ideas might be pushed in the context of LLVM. Along the way, we discovered that Souper's intermediate representation was sufficiently similar to the one in Microsoft Visual C++ that we applied Souper to that compiler as well. Shipping, or about-to-ship, versions of both compilers contain optimizations suggested by Souper but implemented by hand. Alternately, when Souper is used as a fully automated optimization pass it compiles a Clang compiler binary that is about 3 MB (4.4%) smaller than the one compiled by LLVM.

On properties of a deformed Freud weight

We study the recurrence coefficients of the monic polynomials $P_n(z)$ orthogonal with respect to the deformed (also called semi-classical) Freud weight \begin{equation*} w_α(x;s,N)=|x|^α{\rm e}^{-N\left[x^{2}+s\left(x^{4}-x^{2}\right)\right]}, ~~x\in\mathbb{R}, \end{equation*} with parameters $α>-1,~N>0,~s\in[0,1]$. We show that the recurrence coefficients $β_{n}(s)$ satisfy the first discrete Painlevé equation (denoted by d${\rm P_{I}}$), a differential-difference equation and a second order nolinear ordinary differential equation (ODE) in $s$. Here $n$ is the order of the Hankel matrix generated by $w_α(x;s,N)$. We describe the asymptotic behavior of the recurrence coefficients in three situations, (i) $s\rightarrow0$, $n,N$ finite, (ii) $n\rightarrow\infty$, $N$ finite, (iii) $n, N\rightarrow\infty$, such that the radio $r:=\frac{n}{N}$ is bounded away from $0$ and closed to $1$. We also investigate the existence and uniqueness for the positive solutions of the d${\rm P_{I}}$. Further more, we derive, using the ladder approach, a second order linear ODE satisfied by the polynomials $P_n(z)$. It is found as $n\rightarrow\infty$, the linear ODE turns to be a biconfluent Heun equation. This paper concludes with the study of the Hankel determinant, $D_{n}(s)$, associated with $w_α(x;s,N)$ when $n$ tends to infinity.

The Smallest Eigenvalue of Large Hankel Matrices

We investigate the large $N$ behavior of the smallest eigenvalue, $λ_{N}$, of an $\left(N+1\right)\times \left(N+1\right)$ Hankel (or moments) matrix $\mathcal{H}_{N}$, generated by the weight $w(x)=x^α(1-x)^β,~x\in[0,1],~ α>-1,~β>-1$. By applying the arguments of Szegö, Widom and Wilf, we establish the asymptotic formula for the orthonormal polynomials $P_{n}(z),z\in\mathbb{C}\setminus[0,1]$, associated with $w(x)$, which are required in the determination of $λ_{N}$. Based on this formula, we produce the expressions for $λ_{N}$, for large $N$. Using the parallel algorithm presented by Emmart, Chen and Weems, we show that the theoretical results are in close proximity to the numerical results for sufficiently large $N$.

The Smallest Eigenvalue of Large Hankel Matrices Generated by a Deformed Laguerre Weight

We study the asymptotic behavior of the smallest eigenvalue, $λ_{N}$, of the Hankel (or moments) matrix denoted by $\mathcal{H}_{N}=\left(μ_{m+n}\right)_{0\leq m,n\leq N}$, with respect to the weight $w(x)=x^α{\rm e}^{-x^β},~x\in[0,\infty),~α>-1,~β>\frac{1}{2}$. Based on the research by Szegö, Chen, etc., we obtain an asymptotic expression of the orthonormal polynomials $\mathcal{P}_{N}(z)$ as $N\rightarrow\infty$, associated with $w(x)$. Using this, we obtain the specific asymptotic formulas of $λ_{N}$ in this paper. Applying the parallel algorithm discovered by Emmart, Chen and Weems, we get a variety of numerical results of $λ_{N}$ corresponding to our theoretical calculations.

Gap Probability Distribution of the Jacobi Unitary Ensemble: An Elementary Treatment, from Finite $n$ to Double Scaling

In this paper, we study the gap probability problem of the (symmetric) Jacobi unitary ensemble of Hermitian random matrices, namely the probability that the interval $(-a,a)\:(0<a<1)$ is free of eigenvalues. Using the ladder operator technique for orthogonal polynomials and the associated supplementary conditions, we derive three quantities instrumental in the gap probability, denoted by $H_{n}(a)$, $R_{n}(a)$ and $r_{n}(a)$. We find that each one satisfies a second order differential equation. We show that after a double scaling, the large second order differential equation in the variable $a$ with $n$ as parameter satisfied by $H_{n}(a)$, can be reduced to the Jimbo-Miwa-Okamoto $σ$ form of the Painlevé V equation.

Generation of multiphoton entangled quantum states with a single silicon nanowire

Multiphoton entanglement plays a critical role in quantum information processing, and greatly improves our fundamental understanding of the quantum world. Despite tremendous efforts in either bulk media or fiber-based devices, nonlinear interactions in integrated circuits show great promise as an excellent platform for photon pair generation with its high brightness, stability and scalability \cite{Caspani2017}. Here, we demonstrate the generation of bi- and multiphoton polarization entangled qubits in a single silicon nanowire waveguide, and these qubits directly compatible with the dense wavelength division multiplexing in telecommunication system. Multiphoton interference and quantum state tomography were used to characterize the quality of the entangled states. Four-photon entanglement states among two frequency channels were ascertained with a fidelity of $0.78\pm0.02$. Our work realizes the integrated multiphoton source in a relatively simple pattern and paves a way for the revolution of multiphoton quantum science.

Center of mass distribution of the Jacobi unitary ensembles: Painleve V, asymptotic expansions

In this paper, we study the probability density function, $\mathbb{P}(c,α,β, n)\,dc$, of the center of mass of the finite $n$ Jacobi unitary ensembles with parameters $α\,>-1$ and $β>-1$; that is the probability that ${\rm tr}M_n\in(c, c+dc),$ where $M_n$ are $n\times n$ matrices drawn from the unitary Jacobi ensembles. We first compute the exponential moment generating function of the linear statistics $\sum_{j=1}^{n}\,f(x_j):=\sum_{j=1}^{n}x_j,$ denoted by $\mathcal{M}_f(λ,α,β,n)$.

Understanding Service Integration of Online Social Networks: A Data-Driven Study

The cross-site linking function is widely adopted by online social networks (OSNs). This function allows a user to link her account on one OSN to her accounts on other OSNs. Thus, users are able to sign in with the linked accounts, share contents among these accounts and import friends from them. It leads to the service integration of different OSNs. This integration not only provides convenience for users to manage accounts of different OSNs, but also introduces usefulness to OSNs that adopt the cross-site linking function. In this paper, we investigate this usefulness based on users' data collected from a popular OSN called Medium. We conduct a thorough analysis on its social graph, and find that the service integration brought by the cross-site linking function is able to change Medium's social graph structure and attract a large number of new users. However, almost none of the new users would become high PageRank users (PageRank is used to measure a user's influence in an OSN). To solve this problem, we build a machine-learning-based model to predict high PageRank users in Medium based on their Twitter data only. This model achieves a high F1-score of 0.942 and a high area under the curve (AUC) of 0.986. Based on it, we design a system to assist new OSNs to identify and attract high PageRank users from other well-established OSNs through the cross-site linking function.

New PARSEC database of alpha-enhanced stellar evolutionary tracks and isochrones I. Calibration with 47 Tuc (NGC104) and the improvement on RGB bump

Precise studies on the Galactic bulge, globular cluster, Galactic halo and Galactic thick disk require stellar models with alpha enhancement and various values of helium content. These models are also important for extra-Galactic population synthesis studies. For this purpose, we complement the existing PARSEC models, which are based on the solar partition of heavy elements, with alpha-enhanced partitions. We collect detailed measurements on the metal mixture and helium abundance for the two populations of 47 Tuc (NGC 104) from the literature, and calculate stellar tracks and isochrones with these alpha-enhanced compositions. By fitting the precise color-magnitude diagram with HST ACS/WFC data, from low main sequence till horizontal branch, we calibrate some free parameters that are important for the evolution of low mass stars like the mixing at the bottom of the convective envelope. This new calibration significantly improves the prediction of the RGB bump brightness. Comparison with the observed RGB and HB luminosity functions also shows that the evolutionary lifetimes are correctly predicted. As a further result of this calibration process, we derive the age, distance modulus, reddening, and the red giant branch mass loss for 47 Tuc. We apply the new calibration and alpha-enhanced mixtures of the two 47 Tuc populations ( [alpha/Fe] ~0.4 and 0.2) to other metallicities. The new models reproduce the RGB bump observations much better than previous models. This new PARSEC database, with the newly updated alpha-enhanced stellar evolutionary tracks and isochrones, will also be part of the new stellar products for Gaia.

Asymptotic Gap Probability Distributions of the Gaussian Unitary Ensembles and Jacobi Unitary Ensembles

In this paper, we address a class of problems in unitary ensembles. Specifically, we study the probability that a gap symmetric about 0, i.e. $(-a,a)$ is found in the Gaussian unitary ensembles (GUE) and the Jacobi unitary ensembles (JUE) (where in the JUE, we take the parameters $α=β$). By exploiting the even parity of the weight, a doubling of the interval to $(a^2,\infty)$ for the GUE, and $(a^2,1)$, for the (symmetric) JUE, shows that the gap probabilities maybe determined as the product of the smallest eigenvalue distributions of the LUE with parameter $α=-1/2,$ and $α=1/2$ and the (shifted) JUE with weights $x^{1/2}(1-x)^β$ and $x^{-1/2}(1-x)^β$ The $σ$ function, namely, the derivative of the log of the smallest eigenvalue distributions of the finite-$n$ LUE or the JUE, satisfies the Jimbo-Miwa-Okamoto $σ$ form of $P_{V}$ and $P_{VI}$, although in the shift Jacobi case, with the weight $x^α(1-x)^β,$ the $β$ parameter does not show up in the equation. We also obtain the asymptotic expansions for the smallest eigenvalue distributions of the Laguerre unitary and Jacobi unitary ensembles after appropriate double scalings, and obtained the constants in the asymptotic expansion of the gap probablities, expressed in term of the Barnes $G-$ function valuated at special point.

Hankel determinants for a perturbed Laguerre weight and Painleve V equation

In this paper, we study Hankel determinants generated from a perturbed Laguerre weight function, Under the double scaling scheme, we give the uniform asymptotic approximations of Hankel determinants in terms of a solution of a third-order nonlinear differential equation, which is equivalent to a particular Painleve V equation. In fact, this Painleve V equation is equivalent to the general Painleve III equation. The asymptotic approximations of the leading coefficients and the recurrence coefficients for the corresponding orthogonal polynomials also involve the painleve V equation. The asymptotic analysis is based on our earlier results by using the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method.

A Study of Fermi-LAT GeV gamma-ray Emission towards the Magnetar-harboring Supernova Remnant Kesteven 73 and Its Molecular Environment

We report our independent GeV gamma-ray study of the young shell-type supernova remnant (SNR) Kes 73 which harbors a central magnetar, and CO-line millimeter observations toward the SNR. Using 7.6 years of Fermi-LAT observation data, we detected an extended gamma-ray source ("source A") with the centroid on the west of the SNR, with a significance of 21.6 sigma in 0.1-300 GeV and an error circle of 5.4 arcminute in angular radius. The gamma-ray spectrum cannot be reproduced by a pure leptonic emission or a pure emission from the magnetar, and thus a hadronic emission component is needed. The CO-line observations reveal a molecular cloud (MC) at V_LSR~90 km/s, which demonstrates morphological correspondence with the western boundary of the SNR brightened in multiwavelength. The 12CO (J=2-1)/12CO (J=1-0) ratio in the left (blue) wing 85-88 km/s is prominently elevated to ~1.1 along the northwestern boundary, providing kinematic evidence of the SNR-MC interaction. This SNR-MC association yields a kinematic distance 9 kpc to Kes 73. The MC is shown to be capable of accounting for the hadronic gamma-ray emission component. The gamma-ray spectrum can be interpreted with a pure hadronic emission or a magnetar+hadronic hybrid emission. In the case of pure hadronic emission, the spectral index of the protons is 2.4, very similar to that of the radio-emitting electrons, essentially consistent with the diffusive shock acceleration theory. In the case of magnetar+hadronic hybrid emission, a magnetic field decay rate >= 10^36 erg/s is needed to power the magnetar's curvature radiation.
