CeCNN: Copula-enhanced convolutional neural networks in joint prediction of refraction error and axial length based on ultra-widefield fundus images

The ultra-widefield (UWF) fundus image is an attractive 3D biomarker in AI-aided myopia screening because it provides much richer myopia-related information. Though axial length (AL) has been acknowledged to be highly related to the two key targets of myopia screening, Spherical Equivalence (SE) measurement and high myopia diagnosis, its prediction based on the UWF fundus image is rarely considered. To save the high expense and time costs of measuring SE and AL, we propose the Copula-enhanced Convolutional Neural Network (CeCNN), a one-stop UWF-based ophthalmic AI framework to jointly predict SE, AL, and myopia status. The CeCNN formulates a multiresponse regression that relates multiple dependent discrete-continuous responses and the image covariate, where the nonlinearity of the association is modeled by a backbone CNN. To thoroughly describe the dependence structure among the responses, we model and incorporate the conditional dependence among responses in a CNN through a new copula-likelihood loss. We provide statistical interpretations of the conditional dependence among responses, and reveal that such dependence is beyond the dependence explained by the image covariate. We heuristically justify that the proposed loss can enhance the estimation efficiency of the CNN weights. We apply the CeCNN to the UWF dataset collected by us and demonstrate that the CeCNN sharply enhances the predictive capability of various backbone CNNs. Our study evidences the ophthalmology view that besides SE, AL is also an important measure to myopia.

Coordinated Spectral Efficiency Prediction for Real-World 5G CoMP Systems

Coordinated multipoint (CoMP) systems incur substantial resource consumption due to the management of backhaul links and the coordination among various base stations (BSs). Accurate prediction of coordinated spectral efficiency (CSE) can guide the optimization of network parameters, resulting in enhanced resource utilization efficiency. However, characterizing the CSE is intractable due to the inherent complexity of the CoMP channel model and the diversity of the 5G dynamic network environment, which poses a great challenge for CSE prediction in real-world 5G CoMP systems. To address this challenge, in this letter, we propose a data-driven model-assisted approach. Initially, we leverage domain knowledge to preprocess the collected raw data, thereby creating a well-informed dataset. Within this dataset, we explicitly define the target variable and the input feature space relevant to channel statistics for CSE prediction. Subsequently, a residual-based network model is built to capture the high-dimensional non-linear mapping function from the channel statistics to the CSE. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated by experimental results on real-world data.

UICrit: Enhancing Automated Design Evaluation with a UICritique Dataset

Automated UI evaluation can be beneficial for the design process; for example, to compare different UI designs, or conduct automated heuristic evaluation. LLM-based UI evaluation, in particular, holds the promise of generalizability to a wide variety of UI types and evaluation tasks. However, current LLM-based techniques do not yet match the performance of human evaluators. We hypothesize that automatic evaluation can be improved by collecting a targeted UI feedback dataset and then using this dataset to enhance the performance of general-purpose LLMs. We present a targeted dataset of 3,059 design critiques and quality ratings for 983 mobile UIs, collected from seven experienced designers. We carried out an in-depth analysis to characterize the dataset's features. We then applied this dataset to achieve a 55% performance gain in LLM-generated UI feedback via various few-shot and visual prompting techniques. We also discuss future applications of this dataset, including training a reward model for generative UI techniques, and fine-tuning a tool-agnostic multi-modal LLM that automates UI evaluation.

Neural-network Density Functional Theory Based on Variational Energy Minimization

Deep-learning density functional theory (DFT) shows great promise to significantly accelerate material discovery and potentially revolutionize materials research. However, current research in this field primarily relies on data-driven supervised learning, making the developments of neural networks and DFT isolated from each other. In this work, we present a theoretical framework of neural-network DFT, which unifies the optimization of neural networks with the variational computation of DFT, enabling physics-informed unsupervised learning. Moreover, we develop a differential DFT code incorporated with deep-learning DFT Hamiltonian, and introduce algorithms of automatic differentiation and backpropagation into DFT, demonstrating the capability of neural-network DFT. The physics-informed neural-network architecture not only surpasses conventional approaches in accuracy and efficiency, but also offers a new paradigm for developing deep-learning DFT methods.

On the collapsing of Calabi-Yau manifolds and Kähler-Ricci flows

We study the collapsing of Calabi-Yau metrics and of Kahler-Ricci flows on fiber spaces where the base is smooth. We identify the collapsed Gromov-Hausdorff limit of the Kahler-Ricci flow when the divisorial part of the discriminant locus has simple normal crossings. In either setting, we also obtain an explicit bound for the real codimension 2 Hausdorff measure of the Cheeger-Colding singular set, and identify a sufficient condition from birational geometry to understand the metric behavior of the limiting metric on the base.

Exploring Query Understanding for Amazon Product Search

Online shopping platforms, such as Amazon, offer services to billions of people worldwide. Unlike web search or other search engines, product search engines have their unique characteristics, primarily featuring short queries which are mostly a combination of product attributes and structured product search space. The uniqueness of product search underscores the crucial importance of the query understanding component. However, there are limited studies focusing on exploring this impact within real-world product search engines. In this work, we aim to bridge this gap by conducting a comprehensive study and sharing our year-long journey investigating how the query understanding service impacts Amazon Product Search. Firstly, we explore how query understanding-based ranking features influence the ranking process. Next, we delve into how the query understanding system contributes to understanding the performance of a ranking model. Building on the insights gained from our study on the evaluation of the query understanding-based ranking model, we propose a query understanding-based multi-task learning framework for ranking. We present our studies and investigations using the real-world system on Amazon Search.

A Multi-Source Heterogeneous Knowledge Injected Prompt Learning Method for Legal Charge Prediction

Legal charge prediction, an essential task in legal AI, seeks to assign accurate charge labels to case descriptions, attracting significant recent interest. Existing methods primarily employ diverse neural network structures for modeling case descriptions directly, failing to effectively leverage multi-source external knowledge. We propose a prompt learning framework-based method that simultaneously leverages multi-source heterogeneous external knowledge from a legal knowledge base, a conversational LLM, and related legal articles. Specifically, we match knowledge snippets in case descriptions via the legal knowledge base and encapsulate them into the input through a hard prompt template. Additionally, we retrieve legal articles related to a given case description through contrastive learning, and then obtain factual elements within the case description through a conversational LLM. We fuse the embedding vectors of soft prompt tokens with the encoding vector of factual elements to achieve knowledge-enhanced model forward inference. Experimental results show that our method achieved state-of-the-art results on CAIL-2018, the largest legal charge prediction dataset, and our method has lower data dependency. Case studies also demonstrate our method's strong interpretability.

CACE-Net: Co-guidance Attention and Contrastive Enhancement for Effective Audio-Visual Event Localization

The audio-visual event localization task requires identifying concurrent visual and auditory events from unconstrained videos within a network model, locating them, and classifying their category. The efficient extraction and integration of audio and visual modal information have always been challenging in this field. In this paper, we introduce CACE-Net, which differs from most existing methods that solely use audio signals to guide visual information. We propose an audio-visual co-guidance attention mechanism that allows for adaptive bi-directional cross-modal attentional guidance between audio and visual information, thus reducing inconsistencies between modalities. Moreover, we have observed that existing methods have difficulty distinguishing between similar background and event and lack the fine-grained features for event classification. Consequently, we employ background-event contrast enhancement to increase the discrimination of fused feature and fine-tuned pre-trained model to extract more refined and discernible features from complex multimodal inputs. Specifically, we have enhanced the model's ability to discern subtle differences between event and background and improved the accuracy of event classification in our model. Experiments on the AVE dataset demonstrate that CACE-Net sets a new benchmark in the audio-visual event localization task, proving the effectiveness of our proposed methods in handling complex multimodal learning and event localization in unconstrained videos. ChunkAttention: Efficient Self-Attention with Prefix-Aware KV Cache and Two-Phase Partition

Self-attention is an essential component of large language models (LLM) but a significant source of inference latency for long sequences. In multi-tenant LLM serving scenarios, the compute and memory operation cost of self-attention can be optimized by using the probability that multiple LLM requests have shared system prompts in prefixes. In this paper, we introduce ChunkAttention, a prefix-aware self-attention module that can detect matching prompt prefixes across multiple requests and share their key/value tensors in memory at runtime to improve the memory utilization of KV cache. This is achieved by breaking monolithic key/value tensors into smaller chunks and structuring them into the auxiliary prefix tree. Consequently, on top of the prefix-tree based KV cache, we design an efficient self-attention kernel, where a two-phase partition algorithm is implemented to improve the data locality during self-attention computation in the presence of shared system prompts. Experiments show that ChunkAttention can speed up the self-attention kernel by 3.2-4.8$\times$ compared to the state-of-the-art implementation, with the length of the system prompt ranging from 1024 to 4096.

Priority and Stackelberg Game-Based Incentive Task Allocation for Device-Assisted MEC Networks

Mobile edge computing (MEC) is a promising computing paradigm that offers users proximity and instant computing services for various applications, and it has become an essential component of the Internet of Things (IoT). However, as compute-intensive services continue to emerge and the number of IoT devices explodes, MEC servers are confronted with resource limitations. In this work, we investigate a task-offloading framework for device-assisted edge computing, which allows MEC servers to assign certain tasks to auxiliary IoT devices (ADs) for processing. To facilitate efficient collaboration among task IoT devices (TDs), the MEC server, and ADs, we propose an incentive-driven pricing and task allocation scheme. Initially, the MEC server employs the Vickrey auction mechanism to recruit ADs. Subsequently, based on the Stackelberg game, we analyze the interactions between TDs and the MEC server. Finally, we establish the optimal service pricing and task allocation strategy, guided by the Stackelberg model and priority settings. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme dramatically improves the utility of the MEC server while safeguarding the interests of TDs and ADs, achieving a triple-win scenario.

FIND: Fine-tuning Initial Noise Distribution with Policy Optimization for Diffusion Models

In recent years, large-scale pre-trained diffusion models have demonstrated their outstanding capabilities in image and video generation tasks. However, existing models tend to produce visual objects commonly found in the training dataset, which diverges from user input prompts. The underlying reason behind the inaccurate generated results lies in the model's difficulty in sampling from specific intervals of the initial noise distribution corresponding to the prompt. Moreover, it is challenging to directly optimize the initial distribution, given that the diffusion process involves multiple denoising steps. In this paper, we introduce a Fine-tuning Initial Noise Distribution (FIND) framework with policy optimization, which unleashes the powerful potential of pre-trained diffusion networks by directly optimizing the initial distribution to align the generated contents with user-input prompts. To this end, we first reformulate the diffusion denoising procedure as a one-step Markov decision process and employ policy optimization to directly optimize the initial distribution. In addition, a dynamic reward calibration module is proposed to ensure training stability during optimization. Furthermore, we introduce a ratio clipping algorithm to utilize historical data for network training and prevent the optimized distribution from deviating too far from the original policy to restrain excessive optimization magnitudes. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in both text-to-image and text-to-video tasks, surpassing SOTA methods in achieving consistency between prompts and the generated content. Our method achieves 10 times faster than the SOTA approach. Our homepage is available at \url{https://github.com/vpx-ecnu/FIND-website}.

Physical Adversarial Attack on Monocular Depth Estimation via Shape-Varying Patches

Adversarial attacks against monocular depth estimation (MDE) systems pose significant challenges, particularly in safety-critical applications such as autonomous driving. Existing patch-based adversarial attacks for MDE are confined to the vicinity of the patch, making it difficult to affect the entire target. To address this limitation, we propose a physics-based adversarial attack on monocular depth estimation, employing a framework called Attack with Shape-Varying Patches (ASP), aiming to optimize patch content, shape, and position to maximize effectiveness. We introduce various mask shapes, including quadrilateral, rectangular, and circular masks, to enhance the flexibility and efficiency of the attack. Furthermore, we propose a new loss function to extend the influence of the patch beyond the overlapping regions. Experimental results demonstrate that our attack method generates an average depth error of 18 meters on the target car with a patch area of 1/9, affecting over 98\% of the target area.

Integrated high-performance error correction for continuous-variable quantum key distribution

An integrated error-correction scheme with high throughput, low frame errors rate (FER) and high reconciliation efficiency under low signal to noise ratio (SNR) is one of the major bottlenecks to realize high-performance and low-cost continuous variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD). To solve this long-standing problem, a novel two-stage error correction method with limited precision that is suitable for integration given limited on-chip hardware resource while maintaining excellent decoding performance is proposed, and experimentally verified on a commercial FPGA. Compared to state-of-art results, the error-correction throughput can be improved more than one order of magnitude given FER<0.1 based on the proposed method, where 544.03 Mbps and 393.33 Mbps real-time error correction is achieved for typical 0.2 and 0.1 code rate, respectively. Besides, compared with traditional decoding method, the secure key rate (SKR) for CV-QKD under composable security framework can be improved by 140.09% and 122.03% by using the proposed two-stage decoding method for codes rate 0.2 and 0.1, which can support 32.70 Mbps and 5.66 Mbps real-time SKR under typical transmission distances of 25 km and 50 km, correspondingly. The record-breaking results paves the way for large-scale deployment of high-rate integrated CV-QKD systems in metropolitan quantum secure network.

Deep learning density functional theory Hamiltonian in real space

Deep learning electronic structures from ab initio calculations holds great potential to revolutionize computational materials studies. While existing methods proved success in deep-learning density functional theory (DFT) Hamiltonian matrices, they are limited to DFT programs using localized atomic-like bases and heavily depend on the form of the bases. Here, we propose the DeepH-r method for deep-learning DFT Hamiltonians in real space, facilitating the prediction of DFT Hamiltonian in a basis-independent manner. An equivariant neural network architecture for modeling the real-space DFT potential is developed, targeting a more fundamental quantity in DFT. The real-space potential exhibits simplified principles of equivariance and enhanced nearsightedness, further boosting the performance of deep learning. When applied to evaluate the Hamiltonian matrix, this method significantly improved in accuracy, as exemplified in multiple case studies. Given the abundance of data in the real-space potential, this work may pave a novel pathway for establishing a ``large materials model" with increased accuracy.

Adaptive Advantage-Guided Policy Regularization for Offline Reinforcement Learning

In offline reinforcement learning, the challenge of out-of-distribution (OOD) is pronounced. To address this, existing methods often constrain the learned policy through policy regularization. However, these methods often suffer from the issue of unnecessary conservativeness, hampering policy improvement. This occurs due to the indiscriminate use of all actions from the behavior policy that generates the offline dataset as constraints. The problem becomes particularly noticeable when the quality of the dataset is suboptimal. Thus, we propose Adaptive Advantage-guided Policy Regularization (A2PR), obtaining high-advantage actions from an augmented behavior policy combined with VAE to guide the learned policy. A2PR can select high-advantage actions that differ from those present in the dataset, while still effectively maintaining conservatism from OOD actions. This is achieved by harnessing the VAE capacity to generate samples matching the distribution of the data points. We theoretically prove that the improvement of the behavior policy is guaranteed. Besides, it effectively mitigates value overestimation with a bounded performance gap. Empirically, we conduct a series of experiments on the D4RL benchmark, where A2PR demonstrates state-of-the-art performance. Furthermore, experimental results on additional suboptimal mixed datasets reveal that A2PR exhibits superior performance. Code is available at https://github.com/ltlhuuu/A2PR.

NeuSDFusion: A Spatial-Aware Generative Model for 3D Shape Completion, Reconstruction, and Generation

3D shape generation aims to produce innovative 3D content adhering to specific conditions and constraints. Existing methods often decompose 3D shapes into a sequence of localized components, treating each element in isolation without considering spatial consistency. As a result, these approaches exhibit limited versatility in 3D data representation and shape generation, hindering their ability to generate highly diverse 3D shapes that comply with the specified constraints. In this paper, we introduce a novel spatial-aware 3D shape generation framework that leverages 2D plane representations for enhanced 3D shape modeling. To ensure spatial coherence and reduce memory usage, we incorporate a hybrid shape representation technique that directly learns a continuous signed distance field representation of the 3D shape using orthogonal 2D planes. Additionally, we meticulously enforce spatial correspondences across distinct planes using a transformer-based autoencoder structure, promoting the preservation of spatial relationships in the generated 3D shapes. This yields an algorithm that consistently outperforms state-of-the-art 3D shape generation methods on various tasks, including unconditional shape generation, multi-modal shape completion, single-view reconstruction, and text-to-shape synthesis. Handling Distance Constraint in Movable Antenna Aided Systems: A General Optimization Framework

The movable antenna (MA) is a promising technology to exploit more spatial degrees of freedom for enhancing wireless system performance. However, the MA-aided system introduces the non-convex antenna distance constraints, which poses challenges in the underlying optimization problems. To fill this gap, this paper proposes a general framework for optimizing the MA-aided system under the antenna distance constraints. Specifically, we separate the non-convex antenna distance constraints from the objective function by introducing auxiliary variables. Then, the resulting problem can be efficiently solved under the alternating optimization framework. For the subproblems with respect to the antenna position variables and auxiliary variables, the proposed algorithms are able to obtain at least stationary points without any approximations. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed optimization framework, we present two case studies: capacity maximization and regularized zero-forcing precoding. Simulation results demonstrate the proposed optimization framework outperforms the existing baseline schemes under both cases.
