Fine-Grained Extraction of Road Networks via Joint Learning of Connectivity and Segmentation

Road network extraction from satellite images is widely applicated in intelligent traffic management and autonomous driving fields. The high-resolution remote sensing images contain complex road areas and distracted background, which make it a challenge for road extraction. In this study, we present a stacked multitask network for end-to-end segmenting roads while preserving connectivity correctness. In the network, a global-aware module is introduced to enhance pixel-level road feature representation and eliminate background distraction from overhead images; a road-direction-related connectivity task is added to ensure that the network preserves the graph-level relationships of the road segments. We also develop a stacked multihead structure to jointly learn and effectively utilize the mutual information between connectivity learning and segmentation learning. We evaluate the performance of the proposed network on three public remote sensing datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the network outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of road segmentation accuracy and connectivity maintenance.

Shedding light on charmonium

We investigate E1 radiative transitions within charmonium in a relativistic approach based on light-front QCD. In quantum field theory, two sets of processes are pure E1: $χ_{c0} \to J/ψγ$ ($ψ\to χ_{c0}γ$) and $h_c \to η_cγ$ ($η_c' \to h_cγ$), both involving the $P$-wave charmonia. We compute the E1 radiative decay widths as well as the corresponding transition form factors of various processes including those involving $2P$ states. These observables provide an access to the microscopic structures of the $P$-wave charmonium. We show that our parameter-free predictions are in excellent agreement with the experimental measurements as well as lattice simulations whenever available.

Joint Task Partitioning and Parallel Scheduling in Device-Assisted Mobile Edge Networks

With the development of the Internet of Things (IoT), certain IoT devices have the capability to not only accomplish their own tasks but also simultaneously assist other resource-constrained devices. Therefore, this paper considers a device-assisted mobile edge computing system that leverages auxiliary IoT devices to alleviate the computational burden on the edge computing server and enhance the overall system performance. In this study, computationally intensive tasks are decomposed into multiple partitions, and each task partition can be processed in parallel on an IoT device or the edge server. The objective of this research is to develop an efficient online algorithm that addresses the joint optimization of task partitioning and parallel scheduling under time-varying system states, posing challenges to conventional numerical optimization methods. To address these challenges, a framework called online task partitioning action and parallel scheduling policy generation (OTPPS) is proposed, which is based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Specifically, the framework leverages a deep neural network (DNN) to learn the optimal partitioning action for each task by mapping input states. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the remaining parallel scheduling problem exhibits NP-hard complexity when considering a specific task partitioning action. To address this subproblem, a fair and delay-minimized task scheduling (FDMTS) algorithm is designed. Extensive evaluation results demonstrate that OTPPS achieves near-optimal average delay performance and consistently high fairness levels in various environmental states compared to other baseline schemes.

FinMem: A Performance-Enhanced LLM Trading Agent with Layered Memory and Character Design

Recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) have exhibited notable efficacy in question-answering (QA) tasks across diverse domains. Their prowess in integrating extensive web knowledge has fueled interest in developing LLM-based autonomous agents. While LLMs are efficient in decoding human instructions and deriving solutions by holistically processing historical inputs, transitioning to purpose-driven agents requires a supplementary rational architecture to process multi-source information, establish reasoning chains, and prioritize critical tasks. Addressing this, we introduce \textsc{FinMem}, a novel LLM-based agent framework devised for financial decision-making. It encompasses three core modules: Profiling, to customize the agent's characteristics; Memory, with layered message processing, to aid the agent in assimilating hierarchical financial data; and Decision-making, to convert insights gained from memories into investment decisions. Notably, \textsc{FinMem}'s memory module aligns closely with the cognitive structure of human traders, offering robust interpretability and real-time tuning. Its adjustable cognitive span allows for the retention of critical information beyond human perceptual limits, thereby enhancing trading outcomes. This framework enables the agent to self-evolve its professional knowledge, react agilely to new investment cues, and continuously refine trading decisions in the volatile financial environment. We first compare \textsc{FinMem} with various algorithmic agents on a scalable real-world financial dataset, underscoring its leading trading performance in stocks. We then fine-tuned the agent's perceptual span and character setting to achieve a significantly enhanced trading performance. Collectively, \textsc{FinMem} presents a cutting-edge LLM agent framework for automated trading, boosting cumulative investment returns.

A Demand-Supply Cooperative Responding Strategy in Power System with High Renewable Energy Penetration

Industrial demand response (IDR) plays an important role in promoting the utilization of renewable energy (RE) in power systems. However, it will lead to power adjustments on the supply side, which is also a non-negligible factor in affecting RE utilization. To comprehensively analyze this impact while enhancing RE utilization, this paper proposes a power demand-supply cooperative response (PDSCR) strategy based on both day-ahead and intraday time scales. The day-ahead PDSCR determines a long-term scheme for responding to the predictable trends in RE supply. However, this long-term scheme may not be suitable when uncertain RE fluctuations occur on an intraday basis. Regarding intraday PDSCR, we formulate a profit-driven cooperation approach to address the issue of RE fluctuations. In this context, unreasonable profit distributions on the demand-supply side would lead to the conflict of interests and diminish the effectiveness of cooperative responses. To mitigate this issue, we derive multi-individual profit distribution marginal solutions (MIPDMSs) based on satisfactory profit distributions, which can also maximize cooperative profits. Case studies are conducted on an modified IEEE 24-bus system and an actual power system in China. The results verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategy for enhancing RE utilization, via optimizing the coordination of IDR flexibility with generation resources.

Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Optimal Energy Management of Multi-energy Microgrids with Uncertainties

Multi-energy microgrid (MEMG) offers an effective approach to deal with energy demand diversification and new energy consumption on the consumer side. In MEMG, it is critical to deploy an energy management system (EMS) for efficient utilization of energy and reliable operation of the system. To help EMS formulate optimal dispatching schemes, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based MEMG energy management scheme with renewable energy source (RES) uncertainty is proposed in this paper. To accurately describe the operating state of the MEMG, the off-design performance model of energy conversion devices is considered in scheduling. The nonlinear optimal dispatching model is expressed as a Markov decision process (MDP) and is then addressed by the twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3) algorithm. In addition, to accurately describe the uncertainty of RES, the conditional-least squares generative adversarial networks (C-LSGANs) method based on RES forecast power is proposed to construct the scenarios set of RES power generation. The generated data of RES is used for scheduling to obtain caps and floors for the purchase of electricity and natural gas. Based on this, the superior energy supply sector can formulate solutions in advance to tackle the uncertainty of RES. Finally, the simulation analysis demonstrates the validity and superiority of the method.

An Ultra-fast Quantum Random Number Generation Scheme Based on Laser Phase Noise

Based on the intrinsic random property of quantum mechanics, quantum random number generators allow for access of truly unpredictable random sequence and are now heading towards high performance and small miniaturization, among which a popular scheme is based on the laser phase noise. However, this scheme is generally limited in speed and implementation complexity, especially for chip integration. In this work, a general physical model based on wiener process for such schemes is introduced, which provides an approach to clearly explain the limitation on the generation rate and comprehensively optimize the system performance. We present an insight to exploit the potential bandwidth of the quantum entropy source that contains plentiful quantum randomness with a simple spectral filtering method and experimentally boost the bandwidth of the corresponding quantum entropy source to 20 GHz, based on which an ultra-fast generation rate of 218 Gbps is demonstrated, setting a new record for laser phase noise based schemes by one order of magnitude. Our proposal significantly enhances the ceiling speed of such schemes without requiring extra complex hardware, thus effectively benefits the corresponding chip integration with high performance and low implementation cost, which paves the way for its large-scale applications.

110-GHz bandwidth integrated lithium niobate modulator without direct lithium niobate etching

Integrated thin film lithium niobate (TFLN) modulators are emerging as an appealing solution to high-speed data processing and transmission due to their high modulation speed and low driving voltage. The key step in fabricating integrated TFLN modulators is the high-quality etching of TFLN, which typically requires long-term optimization of fabrication recipe and specialized equipment. Here we present an integrated TFLN modulator by incorporating low-index rib loaded waveguides onto TFLN without direct etching of TFLN. Based on our systematic investigation into the theory and design methodology of the proposed design, we experimentally demonstrated a TFLN etching-free Mach-Zehnder modulator, featuring a flat electro-optic response up to 110 GHz and a voltage-length product of 2.53 V cm. By significantly simplifying the fabrication process, our design opens up new ways of mass production of high-speed integrated TFLN modulators at low cost.

Correlations of Baryon and Charge Stopping in Heavy Ion Collisions

Baryon numbers are carried by valence quarks in the standard QCD picture of the baryon structure, while some theory proposed an alternative baryon number carrier, a non-perturbative Y-shaped configuration of the gluon field, called the baryon junction in the 1970s. However, neither of the theories has been verified experimentally. It was recently suggested to search for the baryon junction by investigating the correlation of net-charge and net-baryon yields at midrapidity in heavy-ion collisions. This paper presents studies of such correlations in collisions of various heavy ions from Oxygen to Uranium with the UrQMD Monte Carlo model. The UrQMD model implements valence quark transport as the primary means of charge and baryon stopping at midrapidity. Detailed study are also carried out for isobaric $_{40}^{96}\mathrm{Zr}$ + $_{40}^{96}\mathrm{Zr}$ and $_{44}^{96}\mathrm{Ru}$ + $_{44}^{96}\mathrm{Ru}$ collisions. We found a universal trend of the charge stopping with respect to the baryon stopping, and that the charge stopping is always more than the baryon stopping. This study provides a model baseline in valence quark transport for what is expected in net-charge and net-baryon yields at midrapidity of relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Improving Zero-shot Visual Question Answering via Large Language Models with Reasoning Question Prompts

Zero-shot Visual Question Answering (VQA) is a prominent vision-language task that examines both the visual and textual understanding capability of systems in the absence of training data. Recently, by converting the images into captions, information across multi-modalities is bridged and Large Language Models (LLMs) can apply their strong zero-shot generalization capability to unseen questions. To design ideal prompts for solving VQA via LLMs, several studies have explored different strategies to select or generate question-answer pairs as the exemplar prompts, which guide LLMs to answer the current questions effectively. However, they totally ignore the role of question prompts. The original questions in VQA tasks usually encounter ellipses and ambiguity which require intermediate reasoning. To this end, we present Reasoning Question Prompts for VQA tasks, which can further activate the potential of LLMs in zero-shot scenarios. Specifically, for each question, we first generate self-contained questions as reasoning question prompts via an unsupervised question edition module considering sentence fluency, semantic integrity and syntactic invariance. Each reasoning question prompt clearly indicates the intent of the original question. This results in a set of candidate answers. Then, the candidate answers associated with their confidence scores acting as answer heuristics are fed into LLMs and produce the final answer. We evaluate reasoning question prompts on three VQA challenges, experimental results demonstrate that they can significantly improve the results of LLMs on zero-shot setting and outperform existing state-of-the-art zero-shot methods on three out of four data sets. Searching High Temperature Superconductors with the assistance of Graph Neural Networks

Predicting high temperature superconductors has long been a great challenge. A major difficulty is how to predict the transition temperature Tc of superconductors. Recently, progress in material informatics has led to a number of machine learning models predicting Tc, which greatly improves the efficiency of prediction. Unfortunately, prevailing models have not shown adequate physical rationality and generalization ability to find new high temperature superconductors, yet. In this work, in order to give a trustable prediction on the unexplored materials, we built a bond-sensitive graph neural network (BSGNN), which is optimized to process the information of chemical bond and electron interaction in the crystal lattice, to predict the Tc maximum of each type of superconducting materials. On the basis of the domain knowledge considered in the data preparation and algorithm design, our model revealed a relevance between the Tc-Tc maximum and chemical bonds. The results indicate that shorter bond length is favored by high Tc, which is in accordance with previous human experience. Moreover, it also shows that some specific chemical elements are favored by high Tc, which is beyond what human experts already knew. It gives a convenient guidance for searching high temperature superconductors in materials database, by ruling out the materials that could never have high Tc.

In-Context Prompt Editing For Conditional Audio Generation

Distributional shift is a central challenge in the deployment of machine learning models as they can be ill-equipped for real-world data. This is particularly evident in text-to-audio generation where the encoded representations are easily undermined by unseen prompts, which leads to the degradation of generated audio -- the limited set of the text-audio pairs remains inadequate for conditional audio generation in the wild as user prompts are under-specified. In particular, we observe a consistent audio quality degradation in generated audio samples with user prompts, as opposed to training set prompts. To this end, we present a retrieval-based in-context prompt editing framework that leverages the training captions as demonstrative exemplars to revisit the user prompts. We show that the framework enhanced the audio quality across the set of collected user prompts, which were edited with reference to the training captions as exemplars.

Symplectic self-orthogonal and LCD codes from the Plotkin sum construction

In this work, we propose two criteria for linear codes obtained from the Plotkin sum construction being symplectic self-orthogonal (SO) and linear complementary dual (LCD). As specific constructions, several classes of symplectic SO codes with good parameters including symplectic maximum distance separable codes are derived via $\ell$-intersection pairs of linear codes and generalized Reed-Muller codes. Also symplectic LCD codes are constructed from general linear codes. Furthermore, we obtain some binary symplectic LCD codes, which are equivalent to quaternary trace Hermitian additive complementary dual codes that outperform best-known quaternary Hermitian LCD codes reported in the literature. In addition, we prove that symplectic SO and LCD codes obtained in these ways are asymptotically good.

OpenLane-V2: A Topology Reasoning Benchmark for Unified 3D HD Mapping

Accurately depicting the complex traffic scene is a vital component for autonomous vehicles to execute correct judgments. However, existing benchmarks tend to oversimplify the scene by solely focusing on lane perception tasks. Observing that human drivers rely on both lanes and traffic signals to operate their vehicles safely, we present OpenLane-V2, the first dataset on topology reasoning for traffic scene structure. The objective of the presented dataset is to advance research in understanding the structure of road scenes by examining the relationship between perceived entities, such as traffic elements and lanes. Leveraging existing datasets, OpenLane-V2 consists of 2,000 annotated road scenes that describe traffic elements and their correlation to the lanes. It comprises three primary sub-tasks, including the 3D lane detection inherited from OpenLane, accompanied by corresponding metrics to evaluate the model's performance. We evaluate various state-of-the-art methods, and present their quantitative and qualitative results on OpenLane-V2 to indicate future avenues for investigating topology reasoning in traffic scenes.

A novel method of restoration path optimization for the AC-DC bulk power grid after a major blackout

The restoration control of the modern alternating current-direct current (AC-DC) hybrid power grid after a major blackout is difficult and complex. Taking into account the interaction between the line-commutated converter high-voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC) and the AC power grid, this paper proposes a novel optimization method of restoration path to reconfigure the skeleton network for the blackout power grid. Based on the system strength, the supporting capability of the AC power grid for the LCC-HVDC is first analysed from the aspects of start-up and operation of LCC-HVDCs. Subsequently, the quantitative relationship between the restoration path and the restoration characteristic of LCC-HVDC is derived in detail based on the system strength indices of the short-circuit capacity and the frequency regulation capability. Then, an optimization model of restoration path considering non-tree paths is formulated and a feasible optimization algorithm is proposed to achieve the optimal path restoration scheme. A modified IEEE 39-bus system and a partial power grid of Southwest China are simulated to show that the proposed method is suitable for the restoration of AC-DC power grids and can improve restoration efficiency. This research can be an important guidance for operators to rapidly restore the AC-DC power grid.

R$^3$ Prompting: Review, Rephrase and Resolve for Chain-of-Thought Reasoning in Large Language Models under Noisy Context

With the help of Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting, Large Language Models (LLMs) have achieved remarkable performance on various reasoning tasks. However, most of them have been evaluated under noise-free context and the dilemma for LLMs to produce inaccurate results under the noisy context has not been fully investigated. Existing studies utilize trigger sentences to encourage LLMs to concentrate on the relevant information but the trigger has limited effect on final answer prediction. Inspired by interactive CoT method, where intermediate reasoning steps are promoted by multiple rounds of interaction between users and LLMs, we propose a novel prompting method, namely R$^3$ prompting, for CoT reasoning under noisy context. Specifically, R$^3$ prompting interacts with LLMs to perform key sentence extraction, variable declaration and answer prediction, which corresponds to a thought process of reviewing, rephrasing and resolving. The responses generated at the last interaction will perform as hints to guide toward the responses of the next interaction. Our experiments show that R$^3$ prompting significantly outperforms existing CoT prompting methods on five reasoning tasks under noisy context. With GPT-3.5-turbo, we observe 3.7% accuracy improvement on average on the reasoning tasks under noisy context compared to the most competitive prompting baseline. More analyses and ablation studies show the robustness and generalization of R$^3$ prompting method in solving reasoning tasks in LLMs under noisy context.

Explainable machine learning-based prediction model for diabetic nephropathy

The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of serum metabolites on diabetic nephropathy (DN) and predict the prevalence of DN through a machine learning approach. The dataset consists of 548 patients from April 2018 to April 2019 in Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University (SAHDMU). We select the optimal 38 features through a Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression model and a 10-fold cross-validation. We compare four machine learning algorithms, including eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), random forest, decision tree and logistic regression, by AUC-ROC curves, decision curves, calibration curves. We quantify feature importance and interaction effects in the optimal predictive model by Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method. The XGB model has the best performance to screen for DN with the highest AUC value of 0.966. The XGB model also gains more clinical net benefits than others and the fitting degree is better. In addition, there are significant interactions between serum metabolites and duration of diabetes. We develop a predictive model by XGB algorithm to screen for DN. C2, C5DC, Tyr, Ser, Met, C24, C4DC, and Cys have great contribution in the model, and can possibly be biomarkers for DN.
