Maximizing the performance for microcomb based microwave photonic transversal signal processors

Microwave photonic (MWP) transversal signal processors offer a compelling solution for realizing versatile high-speed information processing by combining the advantages of reconfigurable electrical digital signal processing and high-bandwidth photonic processing. With the capability of generating a number of discrete wavelengths from micro-scale resonators, optical microcombs are powerful multi-wavelength sources for implementing MWP transversal signal processors with significantly reduced size, power consumption, and complexity. By using microcomb-based MWP transversal signal processors, a diverse range of signal processing functions have been demonstrated recently. In this paper, we provide a detailed analysis for the processing inaccuracy that is induced by the imperfect response of experimental components. First, we investigate the errors arising from different sources including imperfections in the microcombs, the chirp of electro-optic modulators, chromatic dispersion of the dispersive module, shaping errors of the optical spectral shapers, and noise of the photodetector. Next, we provide a global picture quantifying the impact of different error sources on the overall system performance. Finally, we introduce feedback control to compensate the errors caused by experimental imperfections and achieve significantly improved accuracy. These results provide a guide for optimizing the accuracy of microcomb-based MWP transversal signal processors.

TradingGPT: Multi-Agent System with Layered Memory and Distinct Characters for Enhanced Financial Trading Performance

Large Language Models (LLMs), prominently highlighted by the recent evolution in the Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPT) series, have displayed significant prowess across various domains, such as aiding in healthcare diagnostics and curating analytical business reports. The efficacy of GPTs lies in their ability to decode human instructions, achieved through comprehensively processing historical inputs as an entirety within their memory system. Yet, the memory processing of GPTs does not precisely emulate the hierarchical nature of human memory. This can result in LLMs struggling to prioritize immediate and critical tasks efficiently. To bridge this gap, we introduce an innovative LLM multi-agent framework endowed with layered memories. We assert that this framework is well-suited for stock and fund trading, where the extraction of highly relevant insights from hierarchical financial data is imperative to inform trading decisions. Within this framework, one agent organizes memory into three distinct layers, each governed by a custom decay mechanism, aligning more closely with human cognitive processes. Agents can also engage in inter-agent debate. In financial trading contexts, LLMs serve as the decision core for trading agents, leveraging their layered memory system to integrate multi-source historical actions and market insights. This equips them to navigate financial changes, formulate strategies, and debate with peer agents about investment decisions. Another standout feature of our approach is to equip agents with individualized trading traits, enhancing memory diversity and decision robustness. These sophisticated designs boost the system's responsiveness to historical trades and real-time market signals, ensuring superior automated trading accuracy.

Towards General and Efficient Online Tuning for Spark

The distributed data analytic system -- Spark is a common choice for processing massive volumes of heterogeneous data, while it is challenging to tune its parameters to achieve high performance. Recent studies try to employ auto-tuning techniques to solve this problem but suffer from three issues: limited functionality, high overhead, and inefficient search. In this paper, we present a general and efficient Spark tuning framework that can deal with the three issues simultaneously. First, we introduce a generalized tuning formulation, which can support multiple tuning goals and constraints conveniently, and a Bayesian optimization (BO) based solution to solve this generalized optimization problem. Second, to avoid high overhead from additional offline evaluations in existing methods, we propose to tune parameters along with the actual periodic executions of each job (i.e., online evaluations). To ensure safety during online job executions, we design a safe configuration acquisition method that models the safe region. Finally, three innovative techniques are leveraged to further accelerate the search process: adaptive sub-space generation, approximate gradient descent, and meta-learning method. We have implemented this framework as an independent cloud service, and applied it to the data platform in Tencent. The empirical results on both public benchmarks and large-scale production tasks demonstrate its superiority in terms of practicality, generality, and efficiency. Notably, this service saves an average of 57.00% memory cost and 34.93% CPU cost on 25K in-production tasks within 20 iterations, respectively.

Evolution of Maximum Bending Strain on Poisson's Ratio Distribution

In recent years, new flexible functional materials have attracted increasing interest, but there is a lack of the designing mechanisms of flexibility design with superstructures. In traditional engineering mechanics, the maximum bending strain (MBS) was considered universal for describing the bendable properties of a given material, leading to the universal designing method of lowering the dimension such as thin membranes designed flexible functional materials. In this work, the MBS was found only applicable for materials with uniformly distributed Poisson's ratio, while the MBS increases with the thickness of the given material in case there is a variation Poisson's ratio in different areas. This means the MBS can be enhanced by certain Poisson's ratio design in the future to achieve better flexibility of thick materials. Here, the inorganic freestanding nanofiber membranes, which have a nonconstant Poisson's ratio response on stress/strain for creating nonuniformly distributed Poisson's ratio were proven applicable for designing larger MBS and lower Young's modulus for thicker samples.

InvVis: Large-Scale Data Embedding for Invertible Visualization

We present InvVis, a new approach for invertible visualization, which is reconstructing or further modifying a visualization from an image. InvVis allows the embedding of a significant amount of data, such as chart data, chart information, source code, etc., into visualization images. The encoded image is perceptually indistinguishable from the original one. We propose a new method to efficiently express chart data in the form of images, enabling large-capacity data embedding. We also outline a model based on the invertible neural network to achieve high-quality data concealing and revealing. We explore and implement a variety of application scenarios of InvVis. Additionally, we conduct a series of evaluation experiments to assess our method from multiple perspectives, including data embedding quality, data restoration accuracy, data encoding capacity, etc. The result of our experiments demonstrates the great potential of InvVis in invertible visualization.

Deep Reinforcement Learning-driven Cross-Community Energy Interaction Optimal Scheduling

In order to coordinate energy interactions among various communities and energy conversions among multi-energy subsystems within the multi-community integrated energy system under uncertain conditions, and achieve overall optimization and scheduling of the comprehensive energy system, this paper proposes a comprehensive scheduling model that utilizes a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning algorithm to learn load characteristics of different communities and make decisions based on this knowledge. In this model, the scheduling problem of the integrated energy system is transformed into a Markov decision process and solved using a data-driven deep reinforcement learning algorithm, which avoids the need for modeling complex energy coupling relationships between multi-communities and multi-energy subsystems. The simulation results show that the proposed method effectively captures the load characteristics of different communities and utilizes their complementary features to coordinate reasonable energy interactions among them. This leads to a reduction in wind curtailment rate from 16.3% to 0% and lowers the overall operating cost by 5445.6 Yuan, demonstrating significant economic and environmental benefits.

Apply Non-Hermitian Physics to Realize Ultra-High-Quality Factors of Optically Trapped Particles

Optical trapping and binding systems are non-Hermitian. On one hand, the optical force is non-Hermitian and may pump energy into the trapped particle when the non-Hermiticity is sufficiently large. On the other hand, the ambient damping constitutes a loss to the particle. Here, we show that in a low-friction environment, the interplay between the energy pumped-in by light and the ambient dissipation can give rise to either instability or a periodic vibration characterized by a finite quality factor (Q-factor). Through a comprehensive exploration, we analyze the influence of various parameters on the non-Hermitian force field. Our investigation reveals several strategies for enhancing the non-Hermitian force field, such as augmenting particle radius and refractive index, utilizing triangular lattice optical clusters, and reducing lattice constants.

Graph-based Topology Reasoning for Driving Scenes

Understanding the road genome is essential to realize autonomous driving. This highly intelligent problem contains two aspects - the connection relationship of lanes, and the assignment relationship between lanes and traffic elements, where a comprehensive topology reasoning method is vacant. On one hand, previous map learning techniques struggle in deriving lane connectivity with segmentation or laneline paradigms; or prior lane topology-oriented approaches focus on centerline detection and neglect the interaction modeling. On the other hand, the traffic element to lane assignment problem is limited in the image domain, leaving how to construct the correspondence from two views an unexplored challenge. To address these issues, we present TopoNet, the first end-to-end framework capable of abstracting traffic knowledge beyond conventional perception tasks. To capture the driving scene topology, we introduce three key designs: (1) an embedding module to incorporate semantic knowledge from 2D elements into a unified feature space; (2) a curated scene graph neural network to model relationships and enable feature interaction inside the network; (3) instead of transmitting messages arbitrarily, a scene knowledge graph is devised to differentiate prior knowledge from various types of the road genome. We evaluate TopoNet on the challenging scene understanding benchmark, OpenLane-V2, where our approach outperforms all previous works by a great margin on all perceptual and topological metrics. PMU measurements based short-term voltage stability assessment of power systems via deep transfer learning

Deep learning has emerged as an effective solution for addressing the challenges of short-term voltage stability assessment (STVSA) in power systems. However, existing deep learning-based STVSA approaches face limitations in adapting to topological changes, sample labeling, and handling small datasets. To overcome these challenges, this paper proposes a novel phasor measurement unit (PMU) measurements-based STVSA method by using deep transfer learning. The method leverages the real-time dynamic information captured by PMUs to create an initial dataset. It employs temporal ensembling for sample labeling and utilizes least squares generative adversarial networks (LSGAN) for data augmentation, enabling effective deep learning on small-scale datasets. Additionally, the method enhances adaptability to topological changes by exploring connections between different faults. Experimental results on the IEEE 39-bus test system demonstrate that the proposed method improves model evaluation accuracy by approximately 20% through transfer learning, exhibiting strong adaptability to topological changes. Leveraging the self-attention mechanism of the Transformer model, this approach offers significant advantages over shallow learning methods and other deep learning-based approaches.

The impact of thermally activated electrons on superconductivity within the realm of narrow energy gap semiconductors is investigated, unveiling the potential emergence of room-temperature superconductivity without the necessity for extensive doping. This novel mechanism suggests that thermal excitations can influence carrier concentrations significantly, thus influencing condensation and affecting superconductivity properties. In this paper, we explore how the energy gap width and temperature interact to shape carrier concentrations and subsequently impact the manifestation of superconducting behavior.

Model predictive control strategy in waked wind farms for optimal fatigue loads

With the rapid growth of wind power penetration, wind farms (WFs) are required to implement frequency regulation that active power control to track a given power reference. Due to the wake interaction of the wind turbines (WTs), there is more than one solution to distributing power reference among the operating WTs, which can be exploited as an optimization problem for the second goal, such as fatigue load alleviation. In this paper, a closed-loop model predictive controller is developed that minimizes the wind farm tracking errors, the dynamical fatigue load, and and the load equalization. The controller is evaluated in a mediumfidelity model. A 64 WTs simulation case study is used to demonstrate the control performance for different penalty factor settings. The results indicated the WF can alleviate dynamical fatigue load and have no significant impact on power tracking. However, the uneven load distribution in the wind turbine system poses challenges for maintenance. By adding a trade-off between the load equalization and dynamical fatigue load, the load differences between WTs are significantly reduced, while the dynamical fatigue load slightly increases when selecting a proper penalty factor.

Statistical Material Law Support for Room Temperature Superconductivity in the Lead Apatite System

Quantum mechanics calculations of an electronic orbital coupling distribution of the new possible Room Temperature (RT) system of lead apatite Pb10(PO4)6O system show that the complex orbital coupling characteristics of the new system are similar to those of copper oxide and with multiple orbital interactions. The overall bandwidth is significantly larger than the current largest copper oxide system, which can also be compared to near RT high-pressure hydride systems. By applying a material dependence law relating overall bandwidth to superconducting critical temperature across various typical superconducting systems, we predict that the electronic structure of the new material can support achieving RT superconductivity in the condition of a flatter band.

JiangJun: Mastering Xiangqi by Tackling Non-Transitivity in Two-Player Zero-Sum Games

This paper presents an empirical exploration of non-transitivity in perfect-information games, specifically focusing on Xiangqi, a traditional Chinese board game comparable in game-tree complexity to chess and shogi. By analyzing over 10,000 records of human Xiangqi play, we highlight the existence of both transitive and non-transitive elements within the game's strategic structure. To address non-transitivity, we introduce the JiangJun algorithm, an innovative combination of Monte-Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) and Policy Space Response Oracles (PSRO) designed to approximate a Nash equilibrium. We evaluate the algorithm empirically using a WeChat mini program and achieve a Master level with a 99.41\% win rate against human players. The algorithm's effectiveness in overcoming non-transitivity is confirmed by a plethora of metrics, such as relative population performance and visualization results. EEG-based Emotion Style Transfer Network for Cross-dataset Emotion Recognition

As the key to realizing aBCIs, EEG emotion recognition has been widely studied by many researchers. Previous methods have performed well for intra-subject EEG emotion recognition. However, the style mismatch between source domain (training data) and target domain (test data) EEG samples caused by huge inter-domain differences is still a critical problem for EEG emotion recognition. To solve the problem of cross-dataset EEG emotion recognition, in this paper, we propose an EEG-based Emotion Style Transfer Network (E2STN) to obtain EEG representations that contain the content information of source domain and the style information of target domain, which is called stylized emotional EEG representations. The representations are helpful for cross-dataset discriminative prediction. Concretely, E2STN consists of three modules, i.e., transfer module, transfer evaluation module, and discriminative prediction module. The transfer module encodes the domain-specific information of source and target domains and then re-constructs the source domain's emotional pattern and the target domain's statistical characteristics into the new stylized EEG representations. In this process, the transfer evaluation module is adopted to constrain the generated representations that can more precisely fuse two kinds of complementary information from source and target domains and avoid distorting. Finally, the generated stylized EEG representations are fed into the discriminative prediction module for final classification. Extensive experiments show that the E2STN can achieve the state-of-the-art performance on cross-dataset EEG emotion recognition tasks.

A large calcium-imaging dataset reveals a systematic V4 organization for natural scenes

The visual system evolved to process natural scenes, yet most of our understanding of the topology and function of visual cortex derives from studies using artificial stimuli. To gain deeper insights into visual processing of natural scenes, we utilized widefield calcium-imaging of primate V4 in response to many natural images, generating a large dataset of columnar-scale responses. We used this dataset to build a digital twin of V4 via deep learning, generating a detailed topographical map of natural image preferences at each cortical position. The map revealed clustered functional domains for specific classes of natural image features. These ranged from surface-related attributes like color and texture to shape-related features such as edges, curvature, and facial features. We validated the model-predicted domains with additional widefield calcium-imaging and single-cell resolution two-photon imaging. Our study illuminates the detailed topological organization and neural codes in V4 that represent natural scenes.

A memristive deep belief neural network based on silicon synapses

Memristor-based neuromorphic computing could overcome the limitations of traditional von Neumann computing architectures -- in which data are shuffled between separate memory and processing units -- and improve the performance of deep neural networks. However, this will require accurate synaptic-like device performance, and memristors typically suffer from poor yield and a limited number of reliable conductance states. Here we report floating gate memristive synaptic devices that are fabricated in a commercial complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process. These silicon synapses offer analogue tunability, high endurance, long retention times, predictable cycling degradation, moderate device-to-device variations, and high yield. They also provide two orders of magnitude higher energy efficiency for multiply-accumulate operations than graphics processing units. We use two 12-by-8 arrays of the memristive devices for in-situ training of a 19-by-8 memristive restricted Boltzmann machine for pattern recognition via a gradient descent algorithm based on contrastive divergence. We then create a memristive deep belief neural network consisting of three memristive restricted Boltzmann machines. We test this on the modified National Institute of Standards and Technology (MNIST) dataset, demonstrating recognition accuracy up to 97.05%.
