Integrated lithium niobate optical phased array for two-dimensional beam steering

Optical phased arrays (OPAs) with high speed, low power consumption, and low insertion loss are appealing for many applications, such as light detection and ranging, free-space communication, image projection, and imaging. These OPAs can be achieved by fully leveraging the high electro-optic modulation speed, low driving voltage, and low optical loss of integrated lithium niobate (LN) photonics. Here we present an integrated LN OPA operating in the near-infrared regime, demonstrating a 24 * 8° two-dimensional beam steering, a far-field beam spot with full-width at half-maximum of 2 * 0.6°, and a side lobe suppression level of 10 dB. Additionally, our OPA's phase modulator features a half wave voltage of 6 V. Our OPA opens the door of high speed, low power-consumption, and low loss integrated LN OPAs for various applications.

Bridging the short-term and long-term dynamics of economic structural change

Economic transformation -- change in what an economy produces -- is foundational to development and rising standards of living. Our understanding of this process has been propelled recently by two branches of work in the field of economic complexity, one studying how economies diversify, the other how the complexity of an economy is expressed in the makeup of its output. However, the connection between these branches is not well understood, nor how they relate to a classic understanding of structural transformation. Here, we present a simple dynamical modeling framework that unifies these areas of work, based on the widespread observation that economies diversify preferentially into activities that are related to ones they do already. We show how stylized facts of long-run structural change, as well as complexity metrics, can both emerge naturally from this one observation. However, complexity metrics take on new meanings, as descriptions of the long-term changes an economy experiences rather than measures of complexity per se. This suggests relatedness and complexity metrics are connected, in a hitherto overlooked way: Both describe structural change, on different time scales. Whereas relatedness probes transformation on short time scales, complexity metrics capture long-term change.

MSAT: Biologically Inspired Multi-Stage Adaptive Threshold for Conversion of Spiking Neural Networks

Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) can do inference with low power consumption due to their spike sparsity. ANN-SNN conversion is an efficient way to achieve deep SNNs by converting well-trained Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). However, the existing methods commonly use constant threshold for conversion, which prevents neurons from rapidly delivering spikes to deeper layers and causes high time delay. In addition, the same response for different inputs may result in information loss during the information transmission. Inspired by the biological model mechanism, we propose a multi-stage adaptive threshold (MSAT). Specifically, for each neuron, the dynamic threshold varies with firing history and input properties and is positively correlated with the average membrane potential and negatively correlated with the rate of depolarization. The self-adaptation to membrane potential and input allows a timely adjustment of the threshold to fire spike faster and transmit more information. Moreover, we analyze the Spikes of Inactivated Neurons error which is pervasive in early time steps and propose spike confidence accordingly as a measurement of confidence about the neurons that correctly deliver spikes. We use such spike confidence in early time steps to determine whether to elicit spike to alleviate this error. Combined with the proposed method, we examine the performance on non-trivial datasets CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, and ImageNet. We also conduct sentiment classification and speech recognition experiments on the IDBM and Google speech commands datasets respectively. Experiments show near-lossless and lower latency ANN-SNN conversion. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to build a biologically inspired multi-stage adaptive threshold for converted SNN, with comparable performance to state-of-the-art methods while improving energy efficiency.

A reproducible approach to merging behavior analysis based on High Definition Map

Existing research on merging behavior generally prioritize the application of various algorithms, but often overlooks the fine-grained process and analysis of trajectories. This leads to the neglect of surrounding vehicle matching, the opaqueness of indicators definition, and reproducible crisis. To address these gaps, this paper presents a reproducible approach to merging behavior analysis. Specifically, we outline the causes of subjectivity and irreproducibility in existing studies. Thereafter, we employ lanelet2 High Definition (HD) map to construct a reproducible framework, that minimizes subjectivities, defines standardized indicators, identifies alongside vehicles, and divides scenarios. A comparative macroscopic and microscopic analysis is subsequently conducted. More importantly, this paper adheres to the Reproducible Research concept, providing all the source codes and reproduction instructions. Our results demonstrate that although scenarios with alongside vehicles occur in less than 6% of cases, their characteristics are significantly different from others, and these scenarios are often accompanied by high risk. This paper refines the understanding of merging behavior, raises awareness of reproducible studies, and serves as a watershed moment.

Simple and Fast Polarization Tracking algorithm for Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution System Using Orthogonal Pilot Tone

To reduce the influence of random channel polarization variation, especially fast polarization perturbation, for continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) systems, a simple and fast polarization tracking algorithm is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The algorithm is implemented by an orthogonal pilot tone scheme, one of the pilot tones is used for estimating the polarization rotation angle, and the other one is used for compensating the polarization perturbation introduced phase noise. Meanwhile, residual effects are compensated precisely with the help of a real-valued FIR filter. In this case, the excess noise introduced by polarization perturbation is effectively suppressed. Experimental results show that the polarization scrambling rate 12.57 krad/s can be tracked by using the proposed algorithm, and a good estimated parameters performance is achieved. Compared to conventional polarization tracking algorithms such as the constant modulus algorithm (CMA), experimental results show that the polarization tracking apability of the proposed algorithm is significantly improved. Furthermore, much faster polarization tracking performance is evaluated by digital simulations, and the simulation results show that about 188.50 Mrad/s can be tracked by the proposed algorithm. Thus, our method provides effective technology for the practical application of fiber-based CV-QKD.

Ensemble Nonlinear Model Predictive Control for Residential Solar-Battery Energy Management

In a dynamic distribution market environment, residential prosumers with solar power generation and battery energy storage devices can flexibly interact with the power grid via power exchange. Providing a schedule of this bidirectional power dispatch can facilitate the operational planning for the grid operator and bring additional benefits to the prosumers with some economic incentives. However, the major obstacle to achieving this win-win situation is the difficulty in 1) predicting the nonlinear behaviors of battery degradation under unknown operating conditions and 2) addressing the highly uncertain generation/load patterns, in a computationally viable way. This paper thus establishes a robust short-term dispatch framework for residential prosumers equipped with rooftop solar photovoltaic panels and household batteries. The objective is to achieve the minimum-cost operation under the dynamic distribution energy market environment with stipulated dispatch rules. A general nonlinear optimization problem is formulated, taking into consideration the operating costs due to electricity trading, battery degradation, and various operating constraints. The optimization problem is solved in real-time using a proposed ensemble nonlinear model predictive control-based economic dispatch strategy, where the uncertainty in the forecast has been addressed adequately albeit with limited local data. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been validated using real-world prosumer datasets.

ProxyBO: Accelerating Neural Architecture Search via Bayesian Optimization with Zero-cost Proxies

Designing neural architectures requires immense manual efforts. This has promoted the development of neural architecture search (NAS) to automate the design. While previous NAS methods achieve promising results but run slowly, zero-cost proxies run extremely fast but are less promising. Therefore, it is of great potential to accelerate NAS via those zero-cost proxies. The existing method has two limitations, which are unforeseeable reliability and one-shot usage. To address the limitations, we present ProxyBO, an efficient Bayesian optimization (BO) framework that utilizes the zero-cost proxies to accelerate neural architecture search. We apply the generalization ability measurement to estimate the fitness of proxies on the task during each iteration and design a novel acquisition function to combine BO with zero-cost proxies based on their dynamic influence. Extensive empirical studies show that ProxyBO consistently outperforms competitive baselines on five tasks from three public benchmarks. Concretely, ProxyBO achieves up to 5.41x and 3.86x speedups over the state-of-the-art approaches REA and BRP-NAS.

Optimizing Utility-Energy Efficiency for the Metaverse over Wireless Networks under Physical Layer Security

The Metaverse, an emerging digital space, is expected to offer various services mirroring the real world. Wireless communications for mobile Metaverse users should be tailored to meet the following user characteristics: 1) emphasizing application-specific perceptual utility instead of simply the transmission rate, 2) concerned with energy efficiency due to the limited device battery and energy intensiveness of some applications, and 3) caring about security as the applications may involve sensitive personal data. To this end, this paper incorporates application-specific utility, energy efficiency, and physical-layer security (PLS) into the studied optimization in a wireless network for the Metaverse. Specifically, after introducing utility-energy efficiency (UEE) to represent each Metaverse user's application-specific objective under PLS, we formulate an optimization to maximize the network's weighted sum-UEE by deciding users' transmission powers and communication bandwidths. The formulated problem belongs to the sum-of-ratios optimization, for which prior studies have demonstrated its difficulty. Nevertheless, our proposed algorithm 1) obtains the global optimum for the weighted sum-UEE optimization, via a transform to parametric convex optimization problems, 2) applies to any utility function which is concave, increasing, and twice differentiable, and 3) achieves a linear time complexity in the number of users (the optimal complexity in the order sense). Simulations confirm the superiority of our algorithm over other approaches. We explain that our technique for solving the sum-of-ratios optimization is applicable to other optimization problems in wireless networks and mobile computing.

Resource Allocation of Federated Learning Assisted Mobile Augmented Reality System in the Metaverse

Metaverse has become a buzzword recently. Mobile augmented reality (MAR) is a promising approach to providing users with an immersive experience in the Metaverse. However, due to limitations of bandwidth, latency and computational resources, MAR cannot be applied on a large scale in the Metaverse yet. Moreover, federated learning, with its privacy-preserving characteristics, has emerged as a prospective distributed learning framework in the future Metaverse world. In this paper, we propose a federated learning assisted MAR system via non-orthogonal multiple access for the Metaverse. Additionally, to optimize a weighted sum of energy, latency and model accuracy, a resource allocation algorithm is devised by setting appropriate transmission power, CPU frequency and video frame resolution for each user. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm achieves an overall good performance compared to a random algorithm and greedy algorithm.

A Unified and Efficient Coordinating Framework for Autonomous DBMS Tuning

Recently using machine learning (ML) based techniques to optimize modern database management systems has attracted intensive interest from both industry and academia. With an objective to tune a specific component of a DBMS (e.g., index selection, knobs tuning), the ML-based tuning agents have shown to be able to find better configurations than experienced database administrators. However, one critical yet challenging question remains unexplored -- how to make those ML-based tuning agents work collaboratively. Existing methods do not consider the dependencies among the multiple agents, and the model used by each agent only studies the effect of changing the configurations in a single component. To tune different components for DBMS, a coordinating mechanism is needed to make the multiple agents cognizant of each other. Also, we need to decide how to allocate the limited tuning budget among the agents to maximize the performance. Such a decision is difficult to make since the distribution of the reward for each agent is unknown and non-stationary. In this paper, we study the above question and present a unified coordinating framework to efficiently utilize existing ML-based agents. First, we propose a message propagation protocol that specifies the collaboration behaviors for agents and encapsulates the global tuning messages in each agent's model. Second, we combine Thompson Sampling, a well-studied reinforcement learning algorithm with a memory buffer so that our framework can allocate budget judiciously in a non-stationary environment. Our framework defines the interfaces adapted to a broad class of ML-based tuning agents, yet simple enough for integration with existing implementations and future extensions. We show that it can effectively utilize different ML-based agents and find better configurations with 1.4~14.1X speedups on the workload execution time compared with baselines.

Moiré Magnetic Exchange Interactions in Twisted Magnets

Besides moiré superlattice, twisting can also generate moiré magnetic exchange interactions (MMEIs) in van der Waals magnets. However, due to the extreme complexity and twist-angle-dependent sensitivity, all existing models fail to capture the MMEIs, preventing the understanding of MMEIs-induced new physics. Here, we develop a microscopic moiré spin Hamiltonian that enables the effective description of MMEIs via a sliding-mapping approach in twisted magnets, as demonstrated in twisted bilayer CrI3. Unexpectedly, we discover that the emergence of MMEIs can create an unprecedented magnetic skyrmion bubble (SkB) with non-conversed helicity, named as moiré-type SkB, representing a unique spin texture solely generated by MMEIs and ready to be detected under the current experimental conditions. Importantly, the size and population of SkBs can be finely controlled by twist angle, a key step for skyrmion-based quantum computing and information storage. Furthermore, we reveal that the MMEIs can be effectively manipulated by the substrate-induced interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, modulating the twist-angle-dependent magnetic phase diagram, which solves the outstanding disagreements between prior theories and experiments and verifies our theory.

Factorized Blank Thresholding for Improved Runtime Efficiency of Neural Transducers

We show how factoring the RNN-T's output distribution can significantly reduce the computation cost and power consumption for on-device ASR inference with no loss in accuracy. With the rise in popularity of neural-transducer type models like the RNN-T for on-device ASR, optimizing RNN-T's runtime efficiency is of great interest. While previous work has primarily focused on the optimization of RNN-T's acoustic encoder and predictor, this paper focuses the attention on the joiner. We show that despite being only a small part of RNN-T, the joiner has a large impact on the overall model's runtime efficiency. We propose to utilize HAT-style joiner factorization for the purpose of skipping the more expensive non-blank computation when the blank probability exceeds a certain threshold. Since the blank probability can be computed very efficiently and the RNN-T output is dominated by blanks, our proposed method leads to a 26-30% decoding speed-up and 43-53% reduction in on-device power consumption, all the while incurring no accuracy degradation and being relatively simple to implement.

Attention-based Graph Convolution Fusing Latent Structures and Multiple Features for Graph Neural Networks

We present an attention-based spatial graph convolution (AGC) for graph neural networks (GNNs). Existing AGCs focus on only using node-wise features and utilizing one type of attention function when calculating attention weights. Instead, we propose two methods to improve the representational power of AGCs by utilizing 1) structural information in a high-dimensional space and 2) multiple attention functions when calculating their weights. The first method computes a local structure representation of a graph in a high-dimensional space. The second method utilizes multiple attention functions simultaneously in one AGC. Both approaches can be combined. We also propose a GNN for the classification of point clouds and that for the prediction of point labels in a point cloud based on the proposed AGC. According to experiments, the proposed GNNs perform better than existing methods. Our codes open at https://github.com/liyang-tuat/SFAGC.

Self-Calibrated Atom-Interferometer Gyroscope by Modulating Atomic Velocities

Atom-interferometer gyroscopes have attracted much attention for their potential superior long-term stability and extremely low drift. For such high precision instrument, a self-calibration to achieve an absolute rotation measurement is highly demanded. Here we propose and demonstrate a self-calibration of the atomic gyroscope. The calibration is realized by using the detuning of laser frequency to control the atomic velocity thus to modulate the scale factor of the gyroscope. The modulation determines the order and the initial phase of the interference stripe, thus eliminates the ambiguity caused by the periodicity of the interferometric signal. The calibration method is verified by measuring the Earth's rotation. Long-term stable and self-calibrated atom-interferometer gyros can find important applications in the fields of fundamental physics and long-time navigation.

Compact multi-channel radio frequency pulse sequence generator with fast switching capability for cold atom interferometers

Cold atom interferometers have matured to a powerful tool in fundamental physics research, and they are currently on their way from realizations in the laboratory to applications in the real world. The radio frequency (RF) generator is an indispensable component to control lasers and then manipulate atoms. We developed a highly compact RF generator for fast switching and sweeping frequencies/amplitudes of atomic interference pulse sequences. Multi-channel RF signals are generated by using a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) to control eight direct digital synthesizers (DDSs). We further proposed and demonstrated a method of preloading the parameters of all RF pulse sequences to the DDS registers before the execution of the pulse sequences, which eliminates the data transfer between the FPGA and DDSs to change RF signals and thus sharply shortens the delay of frequency switching when the pulse sequences are running. The characterized performance shows the generated RF signals achieve 119 ns frequency switching delay, and 40 dB harmonic rejection ratio. The generated RF pulse sequences are applied to a cold atom-interferometer gyroscope, and the contrast of atomic interference fringes reaches 38%. This compact multi-channel generator with the fast frequency/amplitude switching or/and sweeping capability has beneficial applications for the real-world atom interferometers.

Detecting the Most Probable High Dimensional Transition Pathway Based on Optimal Control Theory

Many natural systems exhibit phase transition where external environmental conditions spark a shift to a new and sometimes quite different state. Therefore, detecting the behavior of a stochastic dynamic system such as the most probable transition pathway, has made sense. We consider stochastic dynamic systems driven by Brownian motion. Based on variational principle and Onsager-Machlup action functional theory, the variational problem is transformed into deterministic optimal control problem. Different from traditional variational method, optimal control theory can handle high dimensional problems well. This paper describes the following three systems, double well system driven by additive noise, Maire-Stein system driven by multiplicative noise, and Nutrient-Phytoplankton-Nooplanktonr system. For numerical computation, based on Pontryagin's Maximum Principle, we adopt method of successive approximations to compute the optimal solution pathway, which is the most probable transition pathway in the sense of Onsager - Machlup.

Re-recognition of the ideal gas and real gas

Ideal gas is the most fundamental and simple system in thermodynamics, which has extensive applications in energy research and engineering. By reviewing the physical concept of ideal gas, it is found that the current understanding of ideal gas is still inappropriate and ambiguous, making it challenging to reveal the essential difference between ideal and real gases. Therefore, the macro and microscopic definitions and properties of ideal gas need to be reconceptualized. On the microscopic level, an ideal gas is a hypothetical collection of classical masses in irregular motion, which does not involve quantum mechanics; on the macroscopic level, any real gas cannot strictly obey the equation of state of ideal gas. Moreover, the heat capacity is a constant which should be an endogenous attribute of ideal gas model in order to unify the macroscopic and microscopic definitions of ideal gas. Finally, according to the law of heat capacity, the real gas can be divided into three categories: far-ideal, near-ideal, and quasi-ideal. This makes it easier to perform thermodynamic calculations with the assistance of ideal gas. Among them, the far-ideal gas heat capacity is a function of temperature and pressure, the near-ideal gas heat capacity is a single-valued function of temperature, and the quasi-ideal gas heat capacity is a constant.
